I'm a "Limey" that moved to Alaska many years ago. I am lucky enough to own a Plaid. It was an impulse buy, I originally ordered one, but the build time was 6 months. I happened to be on a Business trip in Spokane, Washington. As I had never physically even seen a Tesla, I dropped by a Tesla delivery centre and spoke to the manager and enquired if they had a Plaid I could look at. That very morning a car precisely the same as my order had been delivered to them, and the purchaser was unable to proceed with the pick-up. Stupidly or not, without even a "Test Drive", I handed over the money, and instead of catching my flight to Seatle to connect with my flight back to Anchorage, I got in the car and drove it 300 miles (one fast charge on the way) put it on a ship to Alaska. I see controversy about the Yoke continuously, people who cannot find the horn, cant locate or use the turn signals easily etc. etc. People talk about muscle memory. I can't quite get this one; every action you take whilst driving a car should be considered and controlled by your brain and not your muscles. After 1500 miles, I love it. Truth being said loved it immediately, sure it will take different people different times to attune but persevere, and you will get there. "Not having to move hands off the wheel for turn signals, cruise adjusts, wiper function, autopilot engagement etc., is a dream." None of that requires half of the steering wheel to be cut off though. You can't convince that the Yoke isn't entirely for looks/cool factor. @@MadDaCube, I accept and can fully understand the aspects of your comments. Living in Alaska, I can offer some experience of the Yoke, where the roads are icy and snowy. In the normal course of driving, the"smart" drivers exercise a lot more caution due to the Moose, Caribou, and many other four-legged creatures that have no idea of road etiquette and hitting a 1500lb Moose does more than cause an inconvenient dent and sadly more often than one could wish for will actually result in your death (Airbag or not). For those that are adamant they don't like or want a Yoke, it would seem an easy fix to add the change to a "round option" in the Tesla Configurator. (my opinions, however, might be biased as I have experience with large jets that have yokes Boeings, Airbus use Sidesticks) think one day that might be a choice on the configurator.
I have checked with the proper government branch here in Norway regarding the yoke in a 3 or a Y. And here you will get some problems if anything happens or you are stoped in a control because the car isn’t approved with this steering wheel from Tesla. And then you can loose on your insurance and you can get a big fine from police or the national traffic branch if they have some technical control and you are stoped there. We can only change parts on the car that are tüv approved. Then you show up at the national traffic center (Biltilsynet) and they will then review the install and put this in in the car registration card as a legal change. I did this when I put kw v3 damper’s on my car. It’s basically the same thing , but the main difference is that there is no yoke steering wheel for the model 3/Y that got an tüv approval. This regards Norway.
Good to hear your thoughts! You really are a voice of reason that many people will listen to. I have heard a lot of hate about the yoke on the Plaid and people are allowed to voice opinions or concerns, but it’s nice to have your counter, RATIONAL point of view.
These did worry me but having seen you actually drive it I appreciate that it prevents sloppy steering wheel use. The only concern I have left is how much control you have over it in an emergency... For example I'd like to see you try it on a skid pan, do you have access to such a thing? Be great to see you deal with a full lock sudden skid, can't decide if it would be better or worse... if it flies out of your grip will it be easier or harder to grab it? Interesting, looks cool though, just have those niggling concerns... 🤔
@@espencapable wow, really?! All worries allayed then... but I feel very old not even realising the electronics would prevent a skid! Although that's all wonderful I do feel a slight sadness at the loss of the skills and thrills of driving.... but, yes, safety first and all that.. 😏
I could be wrong but isn't the standard airbag designed with the assumption that the top of the wheel will be there to brace the back of it and conform to it's shape? Is this yoke supplied with a new airbag design or has it been tested to not be an issue?
@@kaplanjtyma Has the old airbag been tested with the yoke to ensure that there is no loss of effectiveness due to the 'missing' part of the wheel when it deploys?
Deviating a bit here...That's a Hansshow 9" display in there right? I ordered one a couple of weeks ago after a few beers and some RUclips browsing on a Saturday night - Regretted the rash purchase Sunday morning of course. But...it arrived on Thursday, much to my surprise and I fitted it this morning in my M3 LR - with the help of my wife (my sausage fingers couldn't get to the CPU for the cable swap). It took an hour to fit but well worth the effort and now I have Apple CarPlay, Waze, and other frilly bits & pieces. Relatively cheap (£250'ish with a purchase discount code) and a really good worthwhile addition to the overall driving experience. It has Android compatibility too apparently, although I don't have an Android phone to test this. @Richard - Will you be reviewing this display in the future?
Interesting. I'd certainly like to try it. Concern would be on medium turns, you are heavily crossing your arms so have run out of ability to tighten the turn further should the need arise. That doesn't happen when you can progressively feed the wheel if it's circular. As you say insurance and potential liability in an accident would be an issue. It is no doubt a modification that the insurance company should be informed of.

The biggest problem is if you suddenly have to do an unexpected manoeuvre at a higher speed. Something like counteract an over out understeer... That's the reason why I think it's not such a great ideia if you're not able to avoid a crash because of it...
But if that's the case and you're using a conventional wheel with one hand at the top, it's the same problem. You wouldn't be moving the wheel more than 90° at high speed anyway. If you are, you're either driving too fast, or already out of control.
@@rogerstarkey5390 I drive with hands 9-3 always. I have a model 3P and it happened to me, for example, in a curve the road was dirty with some oils from a before accident, and I started losing the back and had to turn the wheel as fast as possible all the way until the end to avoid crashing. I want to see people doing 2+ turns as fast as possible to avoid crashing / loosing the back without the top part of the wheel... Don't get me wrong. I love the design and I'm sure it's amazing to drive without the top of the wheel but between that and safety, I will always choose safety...
@@vascosol7541if we prioritize safety, we will keep a distance of 2 seconds or more, we are not involved in accidents caused by high speed. btw the vehicle always crashes due to extreme turning of the steering wheel when panicking. the vehicle can overturn or the tires will slide like a drift.
The smaller yoke in the 3 looks nice, my biggest concern is finding the haptic buttons (Model S & X yoke) for blinking or honking quickly if you need them in for example the middle of a roundabout while turning the wheel more then say 90 degrees! Not blinking out when exiting a roundabout is illegal in Sweden and I imagine it is in most of, if not all of Europe... Richards test cars still have the stalks negating the potential problem. Excellent video anyways!
For me it is a no as it does not offer me anything, sure it still steers but my girlfriend still drives the way she was thought while learning. I tried to get her to slip the wheel and she either can’t or won’t. This will mean she won’t be driving for any reason, not even in an emergency. I know you said this is the way you should hold the wheel, but it isn’t. Reversing whilst looking back only may not be so easy.
Why re-invent the wheel? ... I really don't see the point of the yolk other than it is a partial step towards no wheel (which I don't like either) hopefully you will be offering the service of replacing the yolk with a wheel when the model X comes to the UK.
I'm more fascinated and impressed with the instrument cluster 😅😅 honestly, would it have been so hard for Tesla to just do that in the 3 and Y? Looks amazing and can't wait for the video on that!!!
@barebare interesting. How though? One can argue that the drivers display in both X and S is far more complex to install, vs the modification that we see in this video. I'd find it hard to believe that an addition such as this, which arguably could increase the vehicles appeal for those who wish to have it, would massively affect the company margin or increase production time. Even if it was an additional option to add to the specs, Tesla could make money from it.
Great video but the yoke you are using seems BETTER than that Tesla yoke. Besides the ergonomics some of the biggest complaints I have seen is the lack of directional stick, lack of a normal car horn (at least initially) and the other buttons that were moved to the yoke rather than what was conventionally in other locations.

Given the choice especially if there was not an additional charge, the yoke every time. I wonder if Tesla will go to the next level and provide steer by wire feedback to the yoke so that the car turns as long as the input left or right is made and centralising the yoke stops the turn. After all, this is how aircraft turn, so why not? That way, the yoke only ever would move a max of 90 degrees left and right. No need to cross hands and all buttons on yoke always touchable.
I would have to try one first before making the decision to change mine on my model 3. I like the idea of of a more open view but I would have concerns if I was trying to control a sudden skid. Not a fan of the ‘2 hand boogy’ when it comes to 3 point turns. I’m a creature of habit and have always stuck to the push and pull method on the wheel.

Is anyone else screaming at the state of the bonnet on that car right at the start?! It's actually hurting my eyes looking at it. It's half in and half out 😂
Not being a member of the Cool Brigade, I wouldn't have a yoke fitted to a car just for its looks. But it would certainly be interesting to do a test drive with one to gauge any advantages/disadvantages for myself (assuming they're road-legal in the UK). My current car's central display has spoiled me for ever wanting to go back to peering through a steering wheel to see the instruments, so a yoke would remove that problem. However, it's academic now that I've ordered a Y. 😋
Glad you like it. I do very much like it on my Plaid. There are a number of easy approaches to rotate it, it is not at all right to discard it basing it on the traditional round wheel motions.
I would like this kind is steering wheel if it makes you focused by not letting you hold the it the lazy way, which I always do as a bad habit. I wonder how this would change the cars price on a market. A Tesla Model S with a modified steering wheel is an advantage or a disadvantage?
Great video Richard as ever. For me the yoke looks fine, it’s the lack of stalks on the Model S Plaid that I’d struggle with. Using buttons for indicators and horn and the screen for gear changing is a step too far for me.

It’s really intuitive, the worst part is the horn, which I rarely use so it feels great. Also the buttons aren’t easy to hit accidentally, you physically have to apply a force, and depending on how hard you press it, it’ll do 3 blinks, or keep the turn signal on. It’s really incredible, I love it.
Not an issue on that one, as it has stalks. My concern however, is tight roundabouts with the indicators as buttons on the yoke. I have a model s on order, still not sure whether to cancel or not.
Yoke steering wheels work when lock to lock is at its least, meaning 2 turns or less. When you start pushing it beyond this and closer to 2.5 and beyond I think it wouldn’t work as easily. Personally I don’t see what’s that wrong with the traditional wheel.
@@harsimranbansal5355 don’t think you’ll convince me and why I say that… well when for whatever reason the tail steps out and you need to apply a lot more lock that bit you grab in a traditional wheel will be sorely missed.
"It actually makes you drive correctly" yeah using the wax on wax off Mr Miyagi method of steering and crossing your arms over whilst turning are how you get taught how to steer if your driving instructor is a 20 year old boy racer in a Focus ST.
I’d like to see another video going back to the standard steering wheel and then seeing which was preferred. I like the look on the S Plaid but don’t see the benefit on a 3, except maybe making it feel slightly more open.

interesting, i thought the Y had same wheel as 3 , my Y has a round wheel but the one you were driving had straight sides ? as for insurance companies -from experience i find they are as slippy as a eel , they will try and wriggle out of claims even if the shape of wheel has nothing to do with the claim, but would love to drive one to see what its like ( using someone else's insurance of course ) 🙂

For me it needs a far more responsive action from input at all speeds and road wheel angles .... just like F1 and rally cars ... variable response to variable situations, not having to faff with the settings too.
Thats big question, completely new part without certifiyng were definitely illegal, but this is modified Original Tesla part, with original Tesla airbag. The form of yoke Is not illegal.
Well, I asked Tesla UK, as I thought it be illegal due to the lack of control in turning! and our road laws. Yes they confirmed the Yoke is illegal in the UK because of the road law on fully controlling the steering. They said it will not be allowed here. only for Canada or USA use. Thank heck.
Great video as always. A definite YES for me on the next Model S. Not sure if I would do the retrofit to current S unless it was a direct copy of the Tesla yoke as I think the raised portions at the top are important and the genuine one looks better. If someone like Sandy Monroe (Monroe Live), with all his auto experience, loves it, then it's got to be the way to go, especially for safety. Monroe explains the issue if you hold the top of a wheel during impact, where the air bags will break you elbows or wrists. Other manufacturers will follow. Classic case of never ask the consumer what they want.👍
The yoke steering wheel looks otherwordly COOL! It reminds me of a F1 steering wheel. And, the other interior modifications in the M3 you're driving looks spectacular, too. Can't wait for the videos.

I'm not sure I'd want a yoke in the 3/Y due to it still having stalks, it looks really awkward to hit the indicator. Having it right beside your thumb when it's on the wheel like in the new S/X seems like a smarter decision, but it'd certainly break from muscle memory!
The stalks are still in the same position you are used to. It's still better IMHO that having capacitive touch "buttons". It becomes a debatable subjective decision, when the buttons are real ones that give positive feedback (the clicks).
When you drive with a Yoke and want to corner, you should put one of your hands at the bottem of the Yoke and push up. With most round wheels you are able to push down and keep hand on the wheel while cornering. Yoke driving is just An other driving style, but I can see it work. For example at 12:27 your right hand should be/move at the bottem left corner of the Yoke, to avoid a X with your hands (what isn't safe in a crash).

I’d worry about changing to a yoke on an existing car, your insurance company may be okay with it, but you’d have to declare if you changed to another company and they might not be
I love my Model 3, mainly for the fact that it is different compared to a traditional auto. Just about everything is different, to one degree or another. Some differences are subtle, others are right there in your face. But… virtually all of those differences are not different just for the sake of difference (though some are…the fart sounds, for example). This yoke seems kind of gimmicky. Nothing wrong with that - everyone should do what makes them happy, as long as they’re not putting others at risk. So, yoke away! But for me, I don’t know… just kind of an unnecessary change, I think. And I already drive with my hands properly positioned - it’s not that hard to do on a round wheel. I appreciate your video, and I do value your opinion. I’ll have to think on it more.

It may force your hands to be in the correct place in a straight line but its forcing you to exhibit even worse habits when turning. Will you be able to pass the UK driving test with all the crossing of arms? You are doing a lot of hand manoeuvres that look suspect from a driving test point of view especially using the palm for turning because you aren't feeding the wheel though your hands. Emergency turning for avoiding action might be interesting to see.
Yeah no not at all especially when most of the models don't come with dash gauges. That's zero benefit when there's nothing on the dash to look at. The wheel is far superior especially in a panic situation being able to grab it anywhere. I hope this never catches on there's a reason for a wheel. I could steer a car with a pair of vice grips clamped on to the spline and get used to it but it doesn't mean it's good.
Model S if you're looking for supercars. Model 3 is the right competitor to the i4. Also i heard the m50 is not worth it. Maybe better than the model3, if you like oldschool interiors. Bmw do that very well.
Richard. Seems like on a medium/ tight turn, you would start with the "opposite" hand on the lower corner (turning left, right hand low, turning right, left hand low) then "lift" that corner. Or, hook a thumb into the top corner and take that from 2-7 or 10-5 "o'clock"? Would seem quite intuitive to me. It stops the driver releasing the wheel as some suggest here, they say they let the wheel slide through their hands.... Well, that's an unsafe technique. I think you were spot on with your comments.
Hated it the first 5m you drove and it’s definitely not a normal wheel cut down..it’s way flatter on the bottom. Ridiculous idea in my opinion 😜👍 Also if you got in a skid on ice I would imagine trying to control a skid would be much easier with a proper tried and tested steering wheel 🙄
"skid on ice" Watch the recent Bjørn Nyland tyre test from Finland. Expert driver on I e, driving fast. I don't think he ever moved the wheel more than 15° either way.
Well, The yoke steering wheel is illegal under UK road highway code law! I checked with Tesla UK and they confirmed that the yoke will not be in the UK at all. as I thought it be illegal. The reason it will be illegal here is, Because under the highway code rules you have to maintain full control of the car when in a turning action. Thus the UK law states you must feed the steering wheel through your closed hands to maintain full control of the car to make sure you don't lose the control of the car and hit something? So no as Tesla UK said when I said the rule to them, they confirmed it be illegal under UK road law and that will not change even for Elon. I hate the ideal of a half square steering wheel anyway what a totally unsafe stupid thing to do totally opposite to logic. Plus the reason we have the rule about feeding the wheel through your closed hands is to stop you crossing over your forearms which is also illegal as you cross them it stops you controlling the turning as your forearms will be getting tangled up which would cause you for a seconds to panic and crash before you try to think to un-lock your forearms.. as we know people panic. And all this oh we often just turn with the palm on one part of the wheel or a thumb etc. that is totally illegal too, both closed hands on the wheel feeding it around even in parking or your breaking the law. Just because Elon likes it don't mean it is good. I never use one that's for sure. if they force the change to our road law and those yoke steering wheels come here, I buy a round one and have it changed. and as a another point the model 3 and Y should be banned in the UK as they don't have the driver speed binnacle display in front of their front road field of view as stated in the rules on placement of the displays all cars had to be under in history for safe driving! Rules are there to save your life and others, Those who break UK road rules to do with driving should be banned for good before they kill someone. sadly lots do die because of these bad drivers.
This information is incorrect. It is legal. Check the British mot laws. It already mentions 'yoke' steering as a possibility. Fair enough of you don't like it. But don't give inaccurate info.

The shape of the wheel never concerned me, the moving important controls did. Take a contrived but very possible situation. You are halfway through a turn and someone walks in front of the car. Where is your horn to alert them?
@@raybishop1130 Should we put the horn on the touch screen then, no point in cluttering the steering wheel if you don't need it in an emergency. --- My point was sometimes you need those controls in a hurry and until everyone only drives with that controls layout it won't be intuitive for 99.99...% of people. Conventions don't have to be changed just because they *can* be. Sure for part time use when **Full** self driving is ready they would be no problem but when the squishy meat sacks are still doing most of the work, it's best make it easy.
@@Firecul I guess I've seen too many RUclips clips in which a driver would rather sound the horn than take action to avoid the collision. IMHO, the horn button is the least important control in any vehicle.
@@raybishop1130 I suppose it's a different way of thinking. I came from motorbikes, having a way to bring attention to something going wrong is a much bigger deal. When your life could hang on a split second decision *by someone else* letting them know you disagree before it's too late cannot be over stated. One situation I've had, I was driving along when someone started to pull out of a joining road. I started braking as hard as possible while blowing the horn. She heard the horn and stopped. I came to a halt ≈30cm away from her driver's door. If she had continued she would have turned towards me and took away my extra braking distance. She was absolutely terrified when she saw a bike nearly standing on it's nose just outside her door when she turned around. She hadn't seen me at all, even when I had very bright headlights.

Sorry to demur Richard, but your point about having stability and control when driving along a straight road is hardly relevant. It’s control when turning corners is what matters and it was very clear from your video that you are not properly in control when turning the wheel. At least you’ve got stalks. But it seems a really bad idea, and how it feels when on a straight road is, I’m afraid, entirely meaningless. Of course I understand that for you this is a business proposition, so I understand your wanting to push it.
This was my thought. I know they use the original airbag for these retrofits and I'd be concerned that the airbag was designed for the specific shape the wheel originally had.

This is modified Original Tesla steering wheel, you need also to use the airbag from your old steering wheel, there is no new airbag comming with it.

Insurance should be informed of any modification.

I drive with hands 9-3 always.
As a rule, if it turns more than about 110 degrees either side of centre, use a wheel.
Great video. Really love your enthusiasm when driving. You really seem to love it and that comes across genuine 😊
Why re-invent the wheel? ... I really don't see the point of the yolk other than it is a partial step towards no wheel (which I don't like either) hopefully you will be offering the service of replacing the yolk with a wheel when the model X comes to the UK.
The bumper on the Model 3 😂
Not sure if it's just me, but the stock bumper looks MUCH cleaner and nicer. 😅
It's certainly an acquired taste!
And the panel gap where it meets the bonnet 🤮

Hideous
Is it a Teslarossa ?😂
I'm more fascinated and impressed with the instrument cluster 😅😅 honestly, would it have been so hard for Tesla to just do that in the 3 and Y? Looks amazing and can't wait for the video on that!!!
Production cost, complexity and margins:)
Excellent to the point post, love your content. I had the yolk installed onto my Tesla P100D its fab
What's the screen behind on the 3 and does it fit the y?
Thank you for the video. It's really got me thinking now.......Thanks again.
I think I'd need to try it first. I do like the way it provides better visibility, a cleaner look.

Kool - u can pretend to be The Hoff in Knight Rider - get those red LEDs on the front👌😊
My question is can we take the 2024 model 3 steering wheel and have those parts converted to a yoke

Im eager to know this too. Also the legality of it.
Is anyone else screaming at the state of the bonnet on that car right at the start?! It's actually hurting my eyes looking at it. It's half in and half out 😂
Cool 😎 thanks for another great update
My concerns exactly.

Your videos are so entraining and informative.
I love the yoke steering wheel and that's no eggsageration!

Not an issue on that one, as it has stalks. My concern however, is tight roundabouts with the indicators as buttons on the yoke.
I have a model s on order, still not sure whether to cancel or not.
On a more practical note: how well can you steer it with your knees, while eating a Big Mac from the drive-thru?
I like it. Does it have the heater?
I couldn't stop thinking of Knight Rider and K.I.T.T.!
Yoke steering wheels work when lock to lock is at its least, meaning 2 turns or less. When you start pushing it beyond this and closer to 2.5 and beyond I think it wouldn’t work as easily. Personally I don’t see what’s that wrong with the traditional wheel.
You should try it out, the new model S yoke is something else. I was sceptical but after using it I wouldn’t want a normal wheel, yoke is superior.
@@harsimranbansal5355 don’t think you’ll convince me and why I say that… well when for whatever reason the tail steps out and you need to apply a lot more lock that bit you grab in a traditional wheel will be sorely missed.
It's a reason why yokes in planes are restricted to 90 degrees each way....
My question would be in a crash … does it affect the ability of the airbag to operate as designed ?
No. It's a standard Tesla wheel that has been modified in shape. You can see plenty of installation videos where they explain this.

Is this something you currently offer to supply/fit?
i LOVE the yoke..

I wish I could put a yoke in all my cars..

"It actually makes you drive correctly" yeah using the wax on wax off Mr Miyagi method of steering and crossing your arms over whilst turning are how you get taught how to steer if your driving instructor is a 20 year old boy racer in a Focus ST.
Apart from you can't shuffle the wheel through your hand. You have to cross you hand which is a big no on a driving test.

With you being in the uk, how is it that you have left hand drive ones? I thought all cars there had to be right hand drive there. Did that change?
These cars were from Germany hence LHD but all our uk cars are indeed RHD

Random question, is it legal in the UK?
Thats big question, completely new part without certifiyng were definitely illegal, but this is modified Original Tesla part, with original Tesla airbag. The form of yoke Is not illegal.
Well, I asked Tesla UK, as I thought it be illegal due to the lack of control in turning! and our road laws.
Yes they confirmed the Yoke is illegal in the UK because of the road law on fully controlling the steering.
They said it will not be allowed here. only for Canada or USA use.
Thank heck.
@@colincampbell3679 You mean only not allowed in the UK. It's coming to the rest of Europe in June this year.

It doesn’t look cool lol….
Why a yoke stealing wheel steering wheel a wheel is round
When you drive with a Yoke and want to corner, you should put one of your hands at the bottem of the Yoke and push up. With most round wheels you are able to push down and keep hand on the wheel while cornering. Yoke driving is just An other driving style, but I can see it work. For example at 12:27 your right hand should be/move at the bottem left corner of the Yoke, to avoid a X with your hands (what isn't safe in a crash).

Do you see any benefits to switch to the wheel?

Does the it come with a heater as the normal steering wheel dos and do the command control wheels, eliminate at night ?
Yoke for me! Cruising will be really nice and tight turns should get used to those quickly!
YOKE YEH!
Looks impressive and can see the cool factor, but not practical for me.
I do not like the yoke. Mostly I cannot get used to the signals.
You changed my mind about the yoke, I was really skeptical about it :)
Is a better electric car Tesla model S or BMW i4 M50? I know they are not direct competitors.
Model S if you're looking for supercars. Model 3 is the right competitor to the i4. Also i heard the m50 is not worth it. Maybe better than the model3, if you like oldschool interiors. Bmw do that very well.
It forces you to cross your arms which is an absolute no-no. Literally reinventing the wheel is unnecessary in this instance
Dont you need to get it approved and written in your papers?
Does the model 3 modified steering wheel still heat up?

Actually really like it.
I prefer the wheel
Hated it the first 5m you drove and it’s definitely not a normal wheel cut down..it’s way flatter on the bottom.

And all this oh we often just turn with the palm on one part of the wheel or a thumb etc. that is totally illegal too,
both closed hands on the wheel feeding it around even in parking or your breaking the law.
Just because Elon likes it don't mean it is good.
I never use one that's for sure. if they force the change to our road law and those yoke steering wheels come here,
I buy a round one and have it changed. and as a another point the model 3 and Y should be banned in the UK as they don't have the driver speed binnacle display in front
of their front road field of view as stated in the rules on placement of the displays all cars had to be under in history for safe driving!
Rules are there to save your life and others, Those who break UK road rules to do with driving should be banned for good before they kill someone. sadly lots do die because of these bad drivers.
So don't buy a Tesla. Problem solved. Sounds like UK is going backward into the stone ages.

4:52 Yeah, an airbag deployment might break your arm in that position.
The shape of the wheel never concerned me, the moving important controls did.
Take a contrived but very possible situation. You are halfway through a turn and someone walks in front of the car. Where is your horn to alert them?
I think braking and / or steering around them is the main thing, rather than alerting them to the fact that you're about to run them over.
@@raybishop1130 Should we put the horn on the touch screen then, no point in cluttering the steering wheel if you don't need it in an emergency.

My point was sometimes you need those controls in a hurry and until everyone only drives with that controls layout it won't be intuitive for 99.99...% of people.
Conventions don't have to be changed just because they *can* be.

Probably depends if the accident rate goes up or not.
Problematic for airbag deployment. Model S has special airbag design.
This was my thought. I know they use the original airbag for these retrofits and I'd be concerned that the airbag was designed for the specific shape the wheel originally had.
