@@edrsa - I recently change it back to the OEM one 🙂. Not because of an issue or something tho. Now the stock feels great. I might go back to the yoke after a year who knows 😄
Very brave move to remove the wheel and install the yoke. I think this video convinced me that the yoke is the way to go. Trevor makes a well balanced argument.
I am old enough to remember when shifting went from the floor to the steering wheel. I also remember when shifting to drive Park reverse went to buttons on the dashboard or in the middle of the wheel. I remember how many people thought they were both stupid ideas along with the idea of moving your headlight dimmer from the floor to the column. We have all adjusted to it. I think there is a yoke because it will be easier to slide or pack away once we have full self driving in every car. What do you think?
Most of the time if I use the top of the wheel, it’s done without conscious thought. If the top isn’t available you typically adjust somewhat passively without much thought.
You are gusty. I would not have attempted to do it myself, but I love the fact that we now have a video as to how it could be done. I don't mind you going out on that limb. LOL. Always interesting!
I ordered the traditional steering wheel. But Hanshaw sent me the Yoke instead. After watching your video, I think I will keep the yoke for my model Y. It also has the white trim that will match my inside white cabin and it has the gloss carbon fiber on the wheel. I think it looks "cool" for a 81 year old!!
I went from a Raven S to a Plaid S just over a year ago (rather abruptly when someone driving the wrong way on a freeway hit me head on, but that is another story); I found the transition from wheel to yoke surprisingly easy. I got used to it within the first ten minutes of driving, having figured a technique for sharp turns by placing my hand under the yoke on the side rotating upwards and rotating the yoke as a lever, while temporarily releasing the hand on the other side and holding it ready beside the yoke, to grab hold again when I turn it back to its center position. I was not that worried about the yoke form factor; I was more concerned about getting used to buttons in place of stalks, but that, too, was not that difficult a transition, and no worse than all of the other brain-recalibrations I've had to do over the last decade in going from gas cars to Teslas and other EVs already. The signal-in-mid-turn does not really seem to come up that often; I've signaled a turn with a partially tilted yoke a few times, but not right in the middle of a sharp wheel turn. Though the S is now offered with an optional traditional wheel (though still without stalks), I would recommend the yoke unless one is overly intimidated by the shape, as the overall interior layout and dash was designed with a yoke in mind. Seeing and driving the S answered a lot of questions I had about how the Cybertruck will work, especially now that a photo of a later prototype showed it now sporting the same yoke as the S and even a similar-looking dashboard display in addition to the main screen.
From your very good account of how it feels to actually use it, I think that for me the one advantage that I would appreciate was the new feeling of much greater openness you get when the top of the steering wheel has been “chopped off”. That for me is one of the biggest selling points. When Red Dragon comes out of the repair shop after its’ deer encounter, I may be tempted. Thanks Trev - nice review!
Reserved judgement on the yoke until I had a good look at my car. All the advantages you state can be achieved by lowering the steering wheel. The stock wheel does not come over the dash and I can easily rest both arms on the door and center rest. If looks is all people want and you don't have a heated wheel, remove the wheel, peel back the "leather" above the "T", cut the top off, round metal and restitch the leather. Just a thought. I have not seen or heard of this being done. Much cheaper than what the after market retailers want.
I appreciate the 'don't use your phone while driving' comment! Too often I see people doing reviews and playing with their phones while driving and it always frustrates me. Thank you!
I think the bigger deal is the removal of stalks and the lack of physical buttons. Those soft slide buttons on the Plaid are apparently way too easy to unintentionally turn on the blinkers or such.
One large consideration is that the Yoke on the Model S they did some redesign to ensure the airbag deploys correctly. So you may be sacrificing safety with this aftermarket Yolk that hasn't had the correct testing. The upper portion of the steering wheel is part of the support for how the airbag deploys on the normal steering wheel.

Enjoyed your frank, honest reviews from two drivers. Next month, my ms should arrive and I’ll be stuck with a yoke, whether I like it or not. While it does look futuristic and different, it doesn’t solve any problem, especially in model 3 & Y. You could claim in the S, it’s binnacle display is more visible. But, we’ve had round steering wheels for over 100 years and no one complained about impaired visibility. I think your car would look better with a white yoke matching interior.
@@marvin-rollinusa7962 I love my yoke and it's a real attention getter. After using it for a week, it's not very difficult. But, what strongly dislike is the tiny horn button. They need to recall these to add a big horn button in the middle over air bag. NHTSA should demand a recall for the fix. I heard Tesla is working on it.

Just the rim rotates and the center is fixed. That was amazing to use and drive. (you can search on youtube to find it working)

I had ordered it as it looks fantastic but ended up canceling the order as I found out that in Australia after market steering wheels require Australian Design Rule (ADR) compliance to be legal on our roads. Also fitting a non OEM steering wheels is likely to invalidate my insurance. I wish Tesla officially released a version for the Model 3/Y as I really like it.

Bro, thank you for your video, your video is very interesting, it helped me a lot, I also decided to buy Aroham yoke, great experience, thanks for sharing!
Older video but I rented a Model X Plaid for several days and the very first thing I would do is swap to a real wheel. Hated the yoke...I drive 9 and 3, 10 and 2 is old and incorrect. But that aside, from a performance perspective the yoke is a joke. There is nowhere for your thumbs to really grab onto during high performance driving. It has nubs on the top but it's so easy for your hands to slip past those. Hence the regular wheel installed on the Unplugged Performance Pikes Peak Model S Plaid. I enjoyed the video though so thank you! Like you said not for everyone....the open feeling though I admit is really nice!
I love this review as it was truly looking to see how someone who wasn't looking to be controversial or noticed actually feels about it. Having your friend with no expectations try it was great. Like Apple, people will scream and yell, then fall in love and thing it's the greatest thing ever, like the huge screen everyone copies today on the S and the 3 and Y.
Had a Plymouth Fury in the 60s that had a rectangular shaped steering "wheel" and push button shifting on the dash 🤯🤯My Tesla will have a yoke as soon as possible after delivery
Not a 10-2 driver… def buying it! Great review, thanks for posting… was looking for ways to make my model 3 more futuristic and different from all the ones out there
Great video (as always). Love the intro. Gasped at the battery scrape. I’m still not sold because of my driving style, but no doubt it looks better. I bet the airflow from the A/C is better too!
I love the looks of them, but not enough to ditch my stock steering wheel, and here's why. Formula racers with yokes are basically able to go lock to lock without having to flip the yoke over entirely. That's the part that really bugs me. I don't know if the Plaid has different steering calibration that prevents yoke flip in tight turning positions, but this is the one thing that is holding me back from wanting to order and install one.
What you're talking about is called progressive steering. Something that Tesla could implement very easily through a software update for cars equipped with an OEM yoke like the S&X. I've never found it to be a problem in day to day use. Not recommended on the track but who does that regularly?
Looks nice. I do like the extra bottom space that I would use for hand placement. I have my wheel with a white wrap and so glad that can get switched over with buttons. I drive 9 and 3 a lot, rare I have my hand on the top. A lot I also one hand at 9 with my thumb or a couple fingers in the top crease so the nub would still feel ok. I don't often do the full one hand turn but that's ok. I used to drive with right hand at the bottom of my older car, now it's my left at the 7-8 position for AP not to nag with the wheel higher. I had some issues with my posture that when getting the 3 would cause me upper back pain. So even if this is weird I'll get used to it. I don't really care for buying things from Aliexpress and I'd have to consider if I really want to break loose the wheel and torque it back down for a yoke.
I put on a yoke it was hella easy except now my scroll wheels dont work and I get an error code. I love the way it drives and all that. I wish I knew how to turn off the error code and make my scroll wheels work again.
I must say, it doesn't look bad. might be a preference if you like to put your arm up by the window. but the issue will only occur when turning. just cruising, no difference. the plus is an unobstructed view. having the sticks fixed is a plus from the model s yoke. I'm leaning towards liking it. it's looked factory made.
True test would be to take the yoke for a spin on a snowy parking lot and do some drifting. But yoke or no yoke, if you can drive I think you can drive as well with it.
I want it now! I feel like we think the same when analyzing these things. I felt dubious on other reviews. Now to convince my wife. The price is right compared to what I’ve seen previously.
Tesla review guy doesn't have FSD? Great video; I get tired of hearing videos from Millenial kids. Advice from a kid that can't drive a stick shift or owns a home always kills me. I enjoy hard-working Americans wrenching on their muscle cars; that's what we have here. I would love to see a poll on how much more often a guy over 50yrs old initiates drag races on the street with kids in loud cars over kids with noisy cars that think they're fast. It's not bragging if you can back it up. Just yesterday, on my way to the office, I crushed an M BMW that clearly had no idea what the P in Tesla is. I remember when I thought my vette was fast. But that was last year. I would retire if I didn't enjoy my hour commute every day in this new car.
looks nice. I don't think it's so nice for tight parking and a lot of maneuvers though. For me would be a no because of that, but when there's not too much big maneuvers seems to be good.
Maybe things have changed but I was told years ago that airbags are powered by large capacitors which can hold a charge for hours or days unless you discharge them; therefore, disconnecting the battery does nothing unless you make sure the capacitors are discharged... it’s very dangerous. Maybe Tesla vehicles are different.
GREAT REVIEW! One question, I bought a yoke at the Hansshow site. What was really nice about this was how you used the core triangle harness of all the attached components from the original Tesla steering wheel, WITHOUT HAVING TO REMOVE THEM AND RECONNECT THEM. What is somewhat scary is using the ones that were not made or OEM by Tesla. What is your position about not being able to use the core harness and detaching everything???
I’m seriously considering one to go with my Hansshow steering wheel centred screen which is awaiting fitting. Hansshow do another yoke steering wheel but it is way more expensive with all the fittings so you dont have to transfer them. You made it look easy enough to move the stuff over so one from Aroham would be fine for me. My son is not keen and he borrows the car a lot. I may have to just take a gamble like you did.
Thank you very much for showing me that I could eventually change from a Yoke to a normal steering wheel. I would hate the yoke. Split second decisions you grab into thin air, can't hit the horn and indicator as they are on the wrong side while you are turning this y(j)oke. There was a reason when the wheel was invented. No need to re-invent it again. But as I said: Thank you. I know that that I could go back. :)
Nice Trevor! Congrats and I too have been thinking of the for some time. I just drove a brand new Model S LT with the Yoke Wheel and I had the same thoughts as you did. I am a 10 &2 for 50% and a one-hand on the wheel relaxed for the other 50%. However, it really did not take me long to get used to it...a minute or two really! The turn signal buttons do take some getting used to, especially when doing a roundabout as I usually signal into one and out of one. But it does work. I may to take the plunge and get one of these as what sells it for me , is the additional visibility you get by removing the upper half of the wheel! And I know for my wife, she looked at it and that was the first thing she commented was wow, I would be able to see over the front a lot better!
I guess I'm in the camp that wouldn't mind, provided the stalks are there. I would like a yoke with a slightly narrower bottom. I do feel sorry for people who have the bad habit of grabbing the top of the rim, palm up, inside the wheel... they are probably mentally incapable of switching. Also a big "NO!" to capacitive buttons, like on the Plaid. Nnnnno, no! NooooOOO!
A Tesla employee mentioned on Reddit that the OEM airbag is designed for a normal wheel. Meaning the top of the wheel supports the airbag on deployment. Makes me wonder if an airbag is actually made specifically for yoke on the model s. I wish Tesla would make a yoke for model 3. Would you have any insight into this? I would love to get one they look amazing.
I actually just installed my yoke steering wheel on my model 3 and I love it. I love it more in the sense that its aesthetically looks way more pleasing. Its actually not hard at all to get used to or hard to drive.
Crazy we live in a world we pay more for less. Perfect Jeans we pay $50. Holes in the jeans we pay $500. I’ll keep my fully rounded steering wheel unless Yolk is cheaper then my current steering wheel
An upside down wheel won't be that difficult to operate. I have no trouble now adjusting media volume when maneuvering and the wheel is upside down. As a 10 and 2 guy there be a harder adjustment for me to the yolk, so I'm in no hurry. The huge advantage of the yolk is for short people. No need to sit on a cushion to see over the steering wheel, or have the seat up as high as it can go or both. With the combination of a yolk and the low dash it makes the car accessible to almost everybody without accommodations.
I honestly don't care what steering wheel is there. I can see pros and cons for both a circle and the yoke. Whatever gets put in the CT, I'll drive it all the same :P
Steering wheel or steering yoke? Well any driver will get used to it but the question is which one is better in terms handling, control and convenience?
Thanks for the video ! It definitely looks cooler and something that I've been wanting to do. At the same time I cannot justify doing something like this just because "it looks cool". Did you feel like it improved the visibility or any offered you any other advantage ?
I think the comparison to an airplane yoke is always wrong. When a plane is on the ground, the yoke is not used to steer it. The foot pedals are. And when in flight, an airplane does not make 3 point turns or parking lot maneuvers. Ask yourself this question, when the yoke is put into all the new Model X do you think your wife will enjoy driving the vehicle with a yoke as she shuttles around a bunch of kids to hockey and soccer practices??? I think hockey/soccer moms and dads are going to find this irritating under normal everyday conditions. There will be fender benders and parking lot mishaps with curbs, etc. Your little experiment is completely biased as your testing is fraught with preconceived control and expectation. But you did not have the further complexity of the no stalks - which Trevor mentioned. I think this is meant to cause people to dislike driving themselves and everything becomes FSD. I for one like to drive and do not use nor want FSD. Why is it such an issue for Tesla to have people choose their wheel - yoke or traditional full circumference. I mean you get to choose between colours.
I want a yoke for my model 3, but only the way the plaid does it, with the capacitive touch buttons. IE stalk delete. I also wish for a way to retrofit heated grips.
Great video. I was searching and curious about the switching of the cores and you answered that. I have a 2021 and not sure if the aftermarket buttons went back to rubber. Good to know I can use my own stuff on these.
Thanks Trevor. Was considering the Hanshow version but more expensive. Ordered the same one for my M3 SR+. How long did it take to arrive? Shows one month.. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Hey! you know if there is any safety risks with the airbag by installing a yoke on the model 3? Franz said in a recent interview that the most challenging thing about the yoke of the Plaid was to redesign the airbag since the yoke doesn't have the top part of the steering wheel. please let us know your thoughts. thanks so much!
I clicked on the link to the website to order but still confused on which one you actually have. Do you mind providing the actual letter/number. Thank you.
Why hasn’t anyone manufactured the inverse of this idea?!? Instead of making Useless yolks for the 3, they should be making useful steering wheels for the S…
Is there any insurance liability in changing over to the yoke? i.e. if you were in an accident could you be sued or deemed responsible for having a non-factory steering wheel?
Who did this first? You or Raj? My opinion is that people will get used to this very quickly and nobody will be talking about it next year. I’m waiting for the joystick in the center that controls turns and speed at the same time. I can imagine buttons and triggers on that to control other car functions. The only question is - will this come to be before FSD eliminates the wheel completely…
I've been training myself to only use the bottom of my wheel in anticipation of getting a yoke for my m3LR. What is the quality like on this one? Does it feel as good as the factory wheel? Does the heating work the same?
I have a Model S Plaid. It was delivered on 28 June and I am accustomed to the yoke. It feels good and I have no problem driving with it.
does it come with stock/sicks turn signals also?
Great review. I think I’m sold. I love how open it is without the binnacle and this yoke.
Amazing intro, great video all the way around.
About stalks vs. buttons: knowing Tesla, in software they could easily flip the L/R button functions as you turn the wheel

"Traffic circles" You Americans are funny :). Much love from an Aussie!
Trevor is Canadian
I finally added a yoke today. Now im super cool.
I love your positive attitude. I'm considering one for my (about to arrive) Model Y Performance, just trying to find whether it will void warranty?
I wanna save up for a Model 3 and do this sooooo bad, it looks incredible tbh man and so futuristic, the one thing I really wanted a Model S for 😄
looks nice. I don't think it's so nice for tight parking and a lot of maneuvers though. For me would be a no because of that, but when there's not too much big maneuvers seems to be good.
Remember, the tesla will park itself in tight parking in a lot of cases
Maybe things have changed but I was told years ago that airbags are powered by large capacitors which can hold a charge for hours or days unless you discharge them; therefore, disconnecting the battery does nothing unless you make sure the capacitors are discharged... it’s very dangerous. Maybe Tesla vehicles are different.
It's cool, I like it, I think this is better than the all digital Model S Yoke
GREAT REVIEW! One question, I bought a yoke at the Hansshow site. What was really nice about this was how you used the core triangle harness of all the attached components from the original Tesla steering wheel, WITHOUT HAVING TO REMOVE THEM AND RECONNECT THEM. What is somewhat scary is using the ones that were not made or OEM by Tesla. What is your position about not being able to use the core harness and detaching everything???
Great video all round! New wheel looks fantastic btw. 10/10
Great vid, I laughed so hard at the beginning. I’ve been thinking about doing this mod, thanks Trev.
You mean like a yoke shaped air bag?
I appreciate your honesty
I actually just installed my yoke steering wheel on my model 3 and I love it. I love it more in the sense that its aesthetically looks way more pleasing. Its actually not hard at all to get used to or hard to drive.
Does it void the warranty if you swap it?
They have them for model S / X also. Don't add it to the cart. Don't add it to the cart...
I think yoke looks better when there are no stalks. I would like Tesla to bring the yoke to the 3/Y!
it makes more sense in Plaid because it has a screen upfront.
This isn’t a traditional yoke. It’s simply a yoke shaped steering wheel. If you can turn it past 90 degrees, it’s a wheel, not a yoke.
I have used Yokes on airplanes, they are great. So one on my model Y will be great also.
Great video. Why were the guts of the yoke replaced by the guts of the original steering wheel?
Might be time for me to look into a Model S retrofit yoke for my P85
I want a yoke for my model 3, but only the way the plaid does it, with the capacitive touch buttons. IE stalk delete.
I also wish for a way to retrofit heated grips.
Love the intro, excellent video!
If you do a yoke lock to lock should be 180 degrees left and right. So you never need to take your hands off the yoke.
Great video. I was searching and curious about the switching of the cores and you answered that. I have a 2021 and not sure if the aftermarket buttons went back to rubber. Good to know I can use my own stuff on these.
Too bad the heated steering wheel does not work with it. Otherwise it looks awesome!
Great vid! When/if I get a 3 or Y I think I'll do this. Seems right.
It's funny how he skipped MKBHDs quotes where he said he likes it.
One year later what do you think?
Thanks for this video, very useful
Think here in the Uk it would be worth a chat with your Insurance company ---NOT SURE WHAT THEY WOULD SAY.
the funny thing, the yoke on the model 3 is less unwieldy than on the model s
Great for movies but not great when some fanboy loses control of the car and hasn’t informed their insurer that they adapted the car.
When you got your new yoke, did it also have the 2 holes to release the airbag, just in case you ever want to change it back at a later date?
That was the coolest thing I ever seen big Knight Rider vibes coming please someone tell me they know what that show is from 1986
Would installing an aftermarket yoke void insurance and/or warranty? This is the only thing it's holding me back atm!
Great review 👌. Does this void the warranty if you change the steering wheel ?
Good question. Anyone get an answer
Do you still have the yoke installed? Most videos of the yoke seem to have removed it and put regular steering wheel back on shortly thereafter.
