Oh I love a good beer bread! I’ve been making this stuff for at least 20 years! I love it with sharp cheddar and diced pickles jalapeños. It’s so flavorful!
I feel that what commercial SR flour has that the home made one does not is baking soda that is why the store bought flour rose more than home made. I would add between 1/4 and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to the 3 cups of AP flour along with the 4 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder and salt. Let me know if anyone tries this 😊
Interesting!! I don’t have or use self rising flour and my recipe uses honey. I am interested in the comparison. I am almost positive that mine uses 1 cup of bread flour. I love the crispy outside from the butter.
True story::: I had never made beer bread until 3 years ago. I watched you wayyyy back in the day and you made a loaf in a video I went right home that night and made it! It was awesome!
Great comparison study. And yes, butter makes it better! I am betting that the difference between the all purpose flour and the self rising flour, other than the salt, is the type of wheat used. Around here, Indiana and Kentucky, self rising flour is made with a soft wheat which has a lower protein content. All purpose flour is usually a hard wheat with a higher protein content. Bread flour has an even higher protein content!
I have a question. the one with self raising had time to raise when you were making the one from scratch didn't have any time to rise like the other two did. just a thought. Good comparison. second question how would it test and bake with the butter mixed in?? I understand how you child was thinking.. walking past, oh so good smells and dang that loaf jumped right out and hit me and I saved it from falling and a little bit fell off and I saved it. yes do
Totally going to try this-looks great! Also, you may already do this, but I made homemade pizza dough with self-rising flour and plain Greek yogurt tonight. Super quick and delicious!
I love your videos, Mindy, and thanks for showing all these different ways to make this bread. I bet I would have to figure out each of these different ways at different times since I rarely have self-rising flour or butter. I'll have to try this out with the way you recommend, though, as it looks delish. Thanks for doing all of the experimentings for us!
Hi Mindy, thanks for another great video! I am planning on making a loaf tomorrow with some slow cooker beef stew. I did not hear you say what temperature you set your oven to, only that you baked the bread for 50 minutes. Thanks!
Hi Mindy. I would definitely be interested in if you could use honey or maple syrup instead of sugar with this recipe. Or olive oil instead of butter. Or any other variations you would be willing to try out.
Would also be something fun to do seasonal variations - perhaps a seasonal summer beer, hard cider, or even Guinness for the winter - that could be fun to add into the meal mix
I would suggest to try to substitute part or all the butter with olive oil.. i think it will give a lovely flavour too. Thabks a mill for the lovely video!
Wow, interesting to see all these versions, esp the homemade self-rising flour vs. store-bought! I've never made beer bread but def gonna give it a try soon, thanks!
Oh my I could just rip off a chunk if it was in front of me -i have self rising flour waiting for me to use -beer is going on the grocery list once this ice storm over -Mindy you rock these videos
Love your videos-just watched Emergency Budget Meals, but PLEASE PLEASE STOP USING THE TERM ‘food insecurity’ !! It’s so insulting to people who are just plain HUNGRY and embarrassed. Now you are making it sound like we should’ve ‘insecure’ about it as well. PLEASE spread the word to STOP using this term. It’s very degrading and unhelpful. I’m begging you to help stop this term. Thank You For All You do.
Linda, food insecurity doesn't describe the person or the way they should feel, it describes a very serious situation in which access to appropriate nutrition is compromised for one reason or another, often at no fault of the person or family. It is the term used in professional circles including philanthropies that address the issue. "Food Insecurity" actually lends more seriousness to the problem than the term "needy", which was commonplace even just a decade or two ago (and much more condescending and unfeeling in my opinion).
@@SeeMindyMom I am one of those out of work due to covid and need to be very frugal. and I’m telling you so you can tell others that make up these terms. It makes people like me feel even more ashamed, not to criticize you. You are fantastic and I love your videos!

I thought about subbing honey for sugar. I think that would work well especially with some of the sweeter wheat bears like blue moon.
Can I add things like nuts to this bread?
I don't think that would work well in this bread, Barbara.
Will you guys please pray for frugal mommy she had second-degree burns. She caught herself on fire by the fireplace thank you so much ❤️💗

haha! I did not know that! So funny!
I used to make a sweet version using a beer bread mix and a can of Mt. Dew. Delicious!
Definitely add the butter!!
I have never heard of that!! Going to look it up now. I just made a Mountain Dew pound cake that was amazing.

Oh that's so interesting, Kym! That could be the reason, for sure! Bread is such a simple and yet such a complicated thing!
Bahaha i love that your daughter snagged a bite of the winner...kids know, man 🤣
Now I need to make this when I get home! BTW we have tons of snow here in WV as well.
Stay safe! Still lots of snow here, but temps rising the next few days. Hallelujah!
I always cut my beer bread upside down. The table help hold the crunch top from falling off.
Thanks Mindy…this is the first time my beer bread has turned out well (self rise w/butter)….Merry Christmas

You are way too knowledgeable about beer for a mom! But this is the best beer bread video ever.
With the Butter Loaf, pour the melted Butter into the pan then put the dough into it...😊
Thanks👍 great information...now to clean the kitchen 😨
Love the video and yes make a video using different sweeteners please
Headshake...Beer from a Can! 😲🤦
Thank you for this video, I am going to make this today!
I hope it turns out delicious for you, Gayla!

I used to make beer bread all the time ans I totally forgot about it. Its so good!
I go through phases with it, too. Sometimes I’ll make it all the time and then go several months until I make it again. 🤷♀️
Awesome video seemindymom
I'll have 2 Slices of the bread with the butter on top, please! Love how you made it differently & each loaf looks delicious 😋!
Thanks, Glenda!

You're welcome
Super helpful, thank you!
Wow so good bread 🍞🍞🍞🍞
My family all fight over the crispy edge pieces with the butter flavor. Butter makes it better 😋
It's a must have with potato soup in our house.
Does it go great driving after eating 😁?
They all looked good to me!😋😋😋
Everything’s better with butter! Nice experiment
So true!

Is beer bread freezable? I wasnt sure if it would hold up.
I have a loaf in the freezer now, so I hope so!
can we substitute the beer for anything?
I'm not sure, I have never tried that. The chemical makeup of the beer is what helps the bread rise and bake properly, I think. The alcohol cooks out.
Never made beer bread, or any homemade bread whatsoever lol.. I’ll have to give it a try! 😬
This is a pretty easy one to start with. No proofing or kneading.

agreed!
I wonder if non-alc beer would work? 🤔🍻
I have no idea. 🤷♀️
We dip beer bread in dill dip yummy.
Sounds great!
Your clever kid had it clear from the beginning just by looking at them 😋
Did you ever try to make it with oil instead of butter?
This was a fun one! I have never made beer bread from scratch. Only a mix. Can’t wait to make some! 😄
I made this tonight and it was a huge hit! My husband loved it:) thank you for the yummy recipe idea!
I like beer bread for sure didn't realize how eaSy as I have always had a mix . Our snow came and went wish it could have stayed a bit longer

Yum!! Gotta add this to my March meal plan! 💗💗💗
That was very interesting thank you good job
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Sound delicious, going to try this one out 💛
I really appreciate all the comparison shots!
Oh snap!!! I can’t wait to make this.
Thanks for sharing that!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am making this tomorrow with what I call Mindy Mom soup. It's your version of pasta fagoli. 😄
Hope you enjoy!
What a fun video! My vote is for the bread with butter. It was more appealing looking.
Agreed!
New here. Awesome how you show us comparisons. Nice to hear you cut & see texture inside. Great video! TFS🤗
Funny you say that, because I also left the clips of me slicing the bread because you can hear the crunch of the crust.
The butter loaf looks the best. Thanks for the experiment. I would have probably tried to cut corners but this just shows why not to.
I’m with you, Amy, I was the same way, always leaving the butter out. It really turns out best with it.
Wow, interesting to see all these versions, esp the homemade self-rising flour vs. store-bought! I've never made beer bread but def gonna give it a try soon, thanks!

Waaaw really looks delicious 😋
Thank you Mindy I love this. I’ve been wanting to try bread making. I just need a pan now 😊.
Hope you like it!
That looks amazing ! Nothing better than homemade bread ! Great experiment !
Thanks, Lisa!

That’s exactly what my daughter did! Lol! Hope you like it!
I was inspired to make beer bread at the weekend and it was great! Thank you for the tips Mindy!
So glad!
They all looked delicious but the one with butter has my mouth watering 🤤
Mine too!
Excellent video! I'm going to make this. Pretty sure my hubby will approve as it includes beer haha!
Hope you enjoy

Lesson learned. Never omit the butter 😉
Truth!
Great video Mindy! Very informative!
Thanks so much!
It’s frozen here in Texas too. As soon as I can get to the grocery store, looks like I’m investing in some self rising flour 😂
Stay safe! We have friends and family in TX, and it's such a crazy situation right now!
@@SeeMindyMom just made the recipe with the butter... oh my goodness!!!! Why is it so easy and so good. I’m supposed to be dieting lol 😂
Recipes for all please ?
Thanks so very much!
Michelle, I gave the recipes in the video. They are only 3-4 ingredients depending on if you add butter.
