Since you can't easily make more generators, the other solution is to have as many batteries as possible. Lots of energy = Easy wins, as you can shoot long bursts and blow up an enemy before your batts deplete.

I think you should take a look at the heat profile since that random damage spike might be something overheating and exploding, since i haven't yet played the game, thats a guess.

The heat takes down component efficiency so it is a very important factor I do not handle too well for a few episodes. However I do not think it is the reason I took that huge damage spike I believe the shot landed directly on my ship core that was not protected yet.
