CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett) has undergone the physical and psychological transformation into the Virgin Queen.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This British-made historical drama depicts the rise of young Elizabeth Tudor to Queen of England, a reign of intrigue and betrayals. In 1554, Queen Mary I (Kathy Burke) tries to restore Catholicism as England's single faith. With no heir to the crown, she maneuvers to keep her Protestant half-sister Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett) from succeeding her, but her efforts fail. With Mary dead, Elizabeth is proclaimed Queen of England in November 1558. Elizabeth relishes the return from exile of her childhood sweetheart, Lord Robert Dudley (Joseph Fiennes). Chief adviser Sir William Cecil (Richard Attenborough) urges the young Queen to forget personal matters and instead address the country's pressing problems. England is bankrupt, has no army, and is under serious threat from abroad. Elizabeth even has enemies within her own court, the most dangerous being the Duke of Norfolk (Christopher Eccleston). Hoping for an heir, Cecil suggests marriage candidates -- King Philip II of Spain or the French Duc d'Anjou (Vincent Cassel) -- to secure the realm. Elizabeth agrees to meet their ambassadors, but her true feelings are revealed when she meets Dudley for a secret tryst. French "warrior queen" Mary of Guise (Fanny Ardent) amasses troops at the Scottish border. Elizabeth bows to the pro-War lobby led by Norfolk, despite protests from her Master of Spies, the enigmatic Sir Francis Walsingham (Geoffrey Rush), but the decision to fight leads to a humiliating defeat. As dark clouds of court conspiracies gather, and the possibility of assassination looms, Elizabeth strikes out at her enemies and puts her trust in Walsingham. Shown at 1998 film fests (Venice, Toronto), this is the first English-language film of Indian director Shekhar Kapur, who shot on locations at Northumberland, Derbyshire, North Yorkshire, and at Shepperton Studios.

I am married... To England.
That little pause there must've given everyone a panic attack if that's what she actually said
+sailormoonserenity99 - or even worse, as says: I am married, to a Muslim !....[off with her head]
This is Hollywood dramatizing this, she wore the white makeup and red wigs because she had suffered a smallpox illness early in her reign which caused her face to scar from the pox and she lost some of her hair. She did say on many occasions she was married to England but she never intended to marry or have kids because of what she had witnessed with her father when she was growing up. The transformation to "The Virgin Queen" really happened over the course of 10-15 years after she had pretty much refused every marriage proposal, she got close a couple of times but ultimately decided to never marry.
+VC YT racists every where
She always said: I am married to England. That's what the books say.

Its Ironic the lengths the Henry went to procure a male heir and yet after he had tore the country apart and firmly destroyed his reputation as anything other than a tyrant in his desperate pursuance of this that his daughter, and most unlikely heir would eventually succeed to his throne and go down in history as one of the most powerful and iconic monarchs ever to rule over England.
Who the had no heir. Male or female. Talk about an exercise in futility!
Futility? England's still around as a monarch. Where's France?
Thats what we call "Destiny"
@Caster Gil Elizabeth II monarchy is a constitutional monarchy, just like Victoria. Elizabeth I was Queen of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death on 24 March 1603. Constitutional monarchy came about in 1688. She was Queen simply put. Not a figurehead. She ruled. I don't doubt that Elizabeth II is badass. But she doesn't even come close to wielding the power that Elizabeth I did.
It's not just ironic but just.
"Observe Lord Burley I am married... to England" Wow God Save the Queen.
Powerful words!
SILVERCLOUD141 Periodt
This certainly must have made Lord Burleigh's stock go up. The only one that Gloriana addressed by name.

She "married" England to have several lovers, it must be something from the religion she invented, God judge the queen, in hell. Haha ha.

Cate Blanchett what you achieved in this scene is just indescribable. You should have got the Oscar only for this. The voice tone, the pause, the look, the sense of Divine 'here on Earth', the regality....all STUNNING.

Yuri Zivago RIGHT! ;) :)
yury zivago. .La penso come te...divina
Yuri Zivago omg this is so perfectly accurate
As much as I loved Blanchett's acting and wished for her Oscar, that scene's acting demanded less as a stoic facade when compared to her other scenes. This scene was stellar in memory due to the director's careful construction more than the actor's acting.
I love how this scene establishes the transition from girl to queen in such a stark manner. The sheer authority in her voice and her godly appearance as she ascends to her throne is a perfect way to end this masterpiece.
J suis D'accord
Never realised how pretentious I used to sound back in the day 🤣
@@beggo321 💀💀💀 hindsight is 20/20 as they say
Godly??? She died like everyone else in human history. Her reign ended like everyone else's will. No matter how long or how powerful.
@@beggo321 Your comment isn’t pretentious and you correctly noted that her appearance is god-like. The real Elizabeth I sought to project a divine image to her subjects which was calculated and brilliant.
EPIC ending, even after all these years that single line/quote still remains etched in my memory "Observe Lord Burghley, I'm married...to England"....they just don't make movies like this anymore!
Massimo Alegría I know, its sad :c

Still can't believe she didn't get the oscar for this role... instead the academy gave it to paltrow!
It was a Best Actress race that year I think between Titanic (Kate), Shakespeare in Love (Gwenyth), and Elizabeth. Cate should have won, but I'm glad the Academy got it right afterwards when she won Best Supporting and Best Actress. Her character in Blue Jasmine is so fucked up.
Harvey Weinstein... That's why
Alessandro Spiridigliozzi Harvey weinstein..
Mario Escalante Kate Winslet was nominated the year before. Cate Blanchett was definitely robbed of her Oscar in 1999 for Elizabeth but her blue jasmine Oscar was EXTREMELY well deserved.
Let's be real... The oscars have become a huge joke now
Thus began England's Golden Age...
It didn't really. England remained king of an irrelevant and poor country for another century and a half even outmatched by the Netherlands. It was from the late 18th century and the decline of Spain that England would begin to kick off.
It didn't really. England remained king of an irrelevant and poor country for another century and a half even outmatched by the Netherlands. It was from the late 18th century and the decline of Spain that England would begin to kick off.
@@doneuplikeakipper6512 so after the 7 years war, after that war no one stood in england's way.
@@gandalfthegrey2592 Not really. A bit later after the 7 years war, England suffered his most humilliating defeat in history. One that even the King forbade to speak or write about in england, one they dont teach english at school. It was against Spain, in the attempted english invation of Cartagena de Indias, trying to size control of south america from Spain.
@@doneuplikeakipper6512 Cartagena happened in the War of Jenkins Ear/Austrian Succession, 15 years *before* the start of the Seven Years War.
In this scene Elizabeth I is wearing the pearls that were given to her by Robert Dudley.
Elizabeth wears them in the famous Amarda portrait after the defeat of Spain. Elizabeth wears the pearls and the Colour black beacuse Dudley had just died a little time after the Amarda got defeated.
''Armada''
Cool info!
Did Dudley have children with Jane? I wonder if Elizabeth did get pregnant by him so he had to marry Jane and adopt her child. They did that sort of thing a lot back then. Brothers would adopt sister's illegitimate children to make them legitimate.
@@LisaMaryification it would have been impossible for Elizabeth to have had a child without anyone noticing. A monarch in those days was surrounded by people all day, every day. Personal attendants, ministers and advisers, courtiers and petitioners. In addition the court was a hotbed of gossip and such a scandal would have been impossible to conceal.
“I am married…. To England” that gave me chills. Cate should’ve at least been given an Oscar for that line alone
I'd give it to "I can command the winds too, sir!"
KNEEL TO HELA
And England blushed...
I honestly wonder how Henry VIII, his six wives (especially Anne), Edward, and Mary would have reacted if they had watched this particular scene from the afterlife. That reddish-gold wig, all those pearls, that stiff ruff, all that silver and white, and of course that invincible aura of confidence and assurance...really gives the impression that Elizabeth had well and truly ascended from mortality into divinity, like a Goddess of Winter with the very sunset as her halo-like hair. Yes, she was making a literal statement that she was not, and would never be, "any Man's Elizabeth". Mmmm...what would Mary have to say that?
I think anne would have been extremely proud.
Henry would have said: hmm now that it’s over wanna bang in the other room. Anne: yes Henry
This is a magnificent scene . She finally stood up for herself and realized the only one who she could please was herself her God and the love she had for her people .She was ridiculed tormented , harassed and she still held her head up high She was also the one who brought the golden age and ruled for 44 years . She was an awesome leader yes there were some pitfalls but she held strong and that is a true hero . She even brought back the penniless treasury to a stable treasury . This lady is awesome and a true hero !!!! The transformation of her finally believing in herself is so beautiful !!!! Good for her !!!!!!!! I love the crowds faces lol lol lol

Yes but Victoria was already powerful and when she was crowned England was a empire and Elizabeth had to work hard to England from a poor country to a super power
Elizabeth was ruling monarch while Victoria was just reigning monarch.
In every sense elizabeth was greater monarch than Victoria
@@krishnavyas313 Can u explain the difference please? I feel like I know what your saying but I'd prefer if you explained. Please and thx 😊
@@niamhisullivan8617 elizabeth had full control and power over her country she was ruling monarch while Victoria had very less power and control because she was rening monarch. parliament had real power during her reign.
Elizabeth had more power to take decision and control over what was happening in her country than Victoria.
That's why we can give Elizabeth full credit for England's success during her 40+ years rule but we can't give Victoria full credit for uk's success during her reign because parliament had real power.
@@krishnavyas313 What you're trying to describe is the difference between an absolute monarch like Elizabeth and a constitutional monarch like Victoria or Queen Elizabeth II. They all reigned, but Elizabeth I ruled her kingdom. She was the head of government and of state, while the post Civil War monarchs gradually became ceremonial Heads of State. They were not without power and influence, but neither matched the power of an absolute monarch.
The best way to stick a finger is to arrive beyond divine and unbothered. Love this scene so damn much.
1:24 I really like that part when the woman kissed her cape. Queen Elizabeth was worshiped like a God.
Yes she was
استغفرالله
People were made to believe that monarchs were chosen and appointed by God, hence the respect, honor, and worship.
If you paid attention to an earlier dialogue between Elisabeth and Mary it becomes clear that she emulates the virgin Mary so that she embodies what the protestant belief - according to Mary - would take away from the people. But then, there might be little difference between the adulation of the virgin Mary and worshipping the divine. Not in the mind of the worshipper anyway.
@@sleepawaysounds8205 All monarch were not worshiped like Elizabeth i.for example Her contemporaries like Mary I of England and Mary,Queen of scots.
After this moment elizebeth ruled another 40 years.... On her death bed she had a servant whisper her lovers name into her ear
Anne Bolyen was innocent. Maybe that's karma. Like you said, what are the chances that the offspring cast off became greater than the King.
ssj god All of his wives were innocent 🤷🏾♀️
She wasn’t completely innocent - she was awful to Henry’s daughter Mary.

Moment when Elizabeth sacrefice her desire for destiny. Queen of England was born in majestry.
She became England holds all her people. Show him proudness of unite and identify upper difference.
She became Mother Land.
Shelter from inner war.
Virgin Mary for religious people.
Motherhood.
Mozart was a time traveller and this scene proves it.
😂😂 Yeah, I know. Mozart had almost another couple of centuries before he showed up. But given the themes behind the scene, the "Requiem" is a good if anachronistic choice.
I feel like at this point, she solidifies her Divine-like status
I think it was a greet touch to see Wolsingham teary eyed. The magnificence of the monarch one has worked so hard to achieve their divine birthright.
Yes, the best part of the scene.
This part is ICONIC....she completely embodies the queen 👑
She is my favorite monarch of all time. I named my daughter after her.
This scene made me shudder... it's so powerful.
The actress who portrayed her is so talented! Especially with those lines spoken in such an amazing voice
Yes, Cate Blanchett nailed that role
Its interesting that out of the 3 highest regarded Queen's of England that 2 were named Elizabeth.
Cate Blanchett is the best actor to portray Elizabeth you can't change my mind
She should have won an oscar and an academy for this
A truly iconic and powerful scene
The look was on point
She was definitely Elizabeth
The Oscar and the Academy Award are the same 😅
Academy Award Winner Cate Blanchett🏆
i love this scene its absolutely stunning from the tone in her voice to the music in the background to the pause ..... ohhh that pause...... divine
Its crazy how mush Cate looks like Elizabeth, its like she brought her back from the dead, or as if her ghost enters her body whenever she plays her roll.
If you are American, Australian, Canadian, or even Indian, because of this woman you speak English.
Well that’s not a huge favor considering how that happened lol
Um, not really. England didn't have a presence in all of those countries at the time. They had holdings in Europe and Ireland, and later in what became Virginia. You're a couple of centuries off.
never get tired of watching movies about Elizabeth 1 or Versailles
Such a powerful scene. Perfection in every way. The costume, makeup, staging, cinematography, expressions, wardrobes, lighting, music…and of course the ever divine Cate Blanchett. I’m calling it already. This is my mood for 2018!
I'm an American girl and I truly say that she's one of the most powerful heroines that I admire and love along with Princess Diana and the goddess Lilith. Elizabeth I had married England, so as an American I think I should marry America too. On September 7th, happy birthday to the greatest woman that ever lived. ✨👑✨🍷
She is presented here, as no mere Prince Temporal, but of a monarch truly ordained by the most high, transcendent of the petty concerns of men, and imbued with the full weight of divinity.
That's the real "slay queen"
Really , this was one of the best scene in the film
I love how everyone bows down to Elizabeth, looking at the ground, but we get that shot of Robert Dudley looking up at her. If anyone else had broken royal etiquette like that she would've made an example of them, but as it's Dudley she lets him have that private glance; showing that she still has some feeling for him, but wants to show her predominance over him as well.
My favorite part. Requiem in D Minor, K. 626: Introit: Requiem aeternam (Chorus), music fit for a queen.
1 of the best final scenes of all time
And opening scenes/credits too! Both opening and closing send shivers down me.
So powerful. I love Cate Blanchett. She's such a hauntingly stunning actor.

LIKE A BOSS!
When she walks out of the light and into the court, you know she has become what she promised she would become and all those who doubted her have no choice but to accept it. She's not the fair maid of a queen whom they thought needed a man or some kind of power to control her under the name of protection: she IS the queen and they SHOULD fear and respect her because she has no loyalty to them. Only to the country whom she knows deserves someone who would put it first above all else, even them.
She is not one of them, she's above them and it's time they accepted it and have no more talk of marriage or manipulation. She's done with it. She's not human anymore, but an icon. A mortal one to be sure, but an icon nonetheless.
