- China’s Communist Party Congress wrapped up on the weekend, but questions are still swirling about an incident involving former president Hu Jintao. He was escorted out of the main auditorium in the Great Hall of the People on Oct 23, just as the Congress was officially closing. It is unclear what really happened. But an exclusive video by CNA gives some clues. Dr Lim Tai Wei, Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore, shared his thoughts on Mr Hu's unexpected exit from the Congress.

Former president Hu Jintao was responsible for the economic growth of China and friendly relations with other countries. He practised collective leadership and concensus-based rule. Hu Jintao was known for technocratic competence rather than persona. Unlike Xi Jinping, he voluntarily retired from all his positions after his second term and earned praises for it. The two are worlds apart.

If Mr. Hu had been unwell and was guided outside to recover or for medical treatment, then the other party members had greeted him, looked at him and wished him well. This is how you would treat a former president and friend.
Mr. Xi did not look at him even when Mr. Hu directly spoke to him.

The same video can have many interpretations depending on each media's predetermined narrative about Xi and China. However it is interpreted, the fact is Xi in 10 years' time will be Hu's current age.
But Xi won't be in power by then. He is collapsing the Chinese economy with his unscientific Covid lock-down of the country which includes the shut-down of business and travel bans along with his destruction of corporations by too quickly shutting down the credit markets. People need to eat. They went through a period of prosperity where their lives improved and they won't forget it. People are already getting restive and Xi will not survive their response to his ancient style of rule.
Maybe we're overreacting. I believe Hu was confused and tried to open the red folder pre-maturely. The current president Xi, must initiate opening the red folder, then everybody else follows suit. By attempting to open the folder first, Hu was either confused, due to his illness, or was challenging Xi's authority. When the other guy saw Hu reach for the folder, he stopped him to prevent Xi from being offended, and realized Hu was not in the right state of mind due to his illness.
This is just my opinion.

From what i've been seeing in the comments. This was no Bernie sanders from the 2016 Democratic primary elections. Where he was reluctant to concede. Later returned to the stage with bruises on his face and in tears from his eyes, reluctantly, conceding before the primary was finalized.
Is it possible for lip-readers to make out what Li Zhanshu said to Hu at the beginning of the released footage? The man Xi summoned to escort Hu out of the hall appeared to be the same guy who escorted Hu in at the opening ceremony a few days ago.

Disappointed with CNA, there were earlier footage showing clearly Mr Hu was not behaving normally. He seems lost and Mr Xi has spoken to some aids to resolve the matter. It seems all the media were western driven to the extent of omitting the earlier footage. I used to believe SG main stream media, now I am not sure anymore.

It's' quite normal for elderly person to feel unwell (at any moment) .... initially, it seemed like he's hesitant to leave (perhaps he felt confused or that it's impolite to do so) ... but after some sympathetic advice and persuasion, he finally agreed to leave (most likely for medical attention) ... and it seemed like he's apolgising or conveying his best regards to 习主席 & 李克强 .... and,
for the others, who are the national & military leaders and the people's representatives, they must have the presence of mind and discipline to remain calm and dignified .... to ensure the session could proceed as scheduled without any unnecessary interruption.

It seems to me that Hu was denied the documents because he didn't satisfy with the seven members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee printed on the documents (七個中共中央政治局常委名單). Then he was persuaded to leave the hall by the assistant.

Yes, it’s absolutely important to know the context in which the incident happened, but unfortunately we don’t hear to much about that from commentators.
I think Hu was exhausted after days of meeting. His brain was in a state of confusion. I worked in nursing homes for many years. I understand how old people behave when their mind got confused. They would refuse any help from the nurse and put up resistant. Hu appeared to struggling but he was actually resisting any help in a confused mind. But soon his mind was back to normal and he tap Xi and Li and was escorted out by his aid for a rest. You can ask any nurse, this kind of scenario happened in nursing home very often.

I have taken care of old folks before and this is how they behave when they are not feeling well. The video is incomplete. There is another video that feature the beginning of the session where the members were moving into their seats, there we can clearly see that Mr Hu is already being help to get to his seat and already looking muddled.

Whereas originally I thought Hu's exit was planned in advance, this new footage makes it look like Xi intervened only after the scuffle between Hu and Li couldn't be contained decorously.
So does all this matter us? Don't meddle with other's politics with assumptions and speculations, or you will end up as a tool by the hostile parties. Results matter and we will see the next five years performance.
