My daughter used to love him... However, the way we see him changed dramatically. We were at the first National Science Festival in Washington DC 2010, we were waiting an hour early for his presentation to get a good seat and my daughter spot him. As no one was around she went to get an autograph and have a picture. This guy totally ignored her and turned around and gave his back. Other kids did the same after her and a many walked away crying. He was very nasty with the sound staff too. My daughter was 8 at that time and she told me Mom, he is not a cool guy I no longer want to see him, we can skip his show. She is 18 and she always remember this experience.
I love space too. I grew up in the 80's when the shuttle program was at it's peak and like all kids at the time my dream was space camp. However space is FAR from the most pressing issue we face as a species. Going to Mars would undoubtedly be epic or even back to the moon for another landing but how about before we piss away a ton of money doing that we fully explore the planet we currently inhabit. Enter the ocean. This planet is 80% water and we know jack shit about what's down there. Knowing that sea levels rose hundreds of meters at the end of the last ice age wouldn't it be great to know what's on the ocean floor off the current coast lines? I think it is more likely that our species will be extinct from our own doing through climate change before we could ever colonize Mars or even the moon. Enjoyed this episode though, thanks Jordan.
This young girl has a plan to where she is at her peak at age 32 as an astronaut. All those certifications and training are all things that drive her towards her goal probably giving her great motivation. Having a passion or goal that you can feel you work towards is very important that a lot of young people are missing or avoiding due to anxiety. But i will say for instance my passion for plants and gardening led me to want to do it for a career. Everything I read and work on in the yard or parents yard feels like its helping me move forward with my passion and career path. This constant stream of serotonin from getting rewarded for working on my goals a most day in and day out is amazingly positive to where I was just 6 months ago. I couldn't put the video games away, I have faced challenges with drug addiction for the last ten years, that had me constantly moving one step forward two steps back. Sounds so simple but it's a challenge to implement these techniques, let alone finding out what you want to be and work towards.
Glad to see al this great content from you. I hoped you would have your own show from the moment i laughed my ass off from you doing the election stuff in 2016

Anyone know who came up with the stapler? when? Question is obviously inspired by "operation paperclip"... Germans developed so many things, with one exception being a sense of humor...
Going to Mars now would be a fast payoff event created by politics. Plenty of time for Mars after we develop the systems that make life in space possible. On the moon. Sending more robots to Mars to deepen our knowledge before sending people so far sounds good to me.
@@agilemind6241 regardless to have someone on the show that is an Activist and not an expert to explain something that is complex and nuanced is irresponsible. As expensive as it was to get to the moon just imagine how much its gonna cost to get to Mars can you wrap your ahead around that many Zeros the number is quite literally Astronomical.Thats just getting there then the cost and logistical nightmare of putting boots on the ground for an extended period of time with protections in place to protect people from the extreme weather and any unexpected events or consequences of prolonged space travel or prolonged exposure to living on the planet. So yea when it comes to going to Mars i want an expert probably many experts not a enthusiast/"Space Activist" I mean why wouldnt you get Neil Degrasse Tyson.
Lmao the shirt piece. Sadder note, the wealthy are trying to build all these special things, when it used to be the government. So the wealthy will be able to live a great life, but the rest of us will die. Edit: bill nye was pretty interesting. Weird to see him be so political, but it is a type of science. Love to see him support those going to college and be against cutting pell grants. Have more respect for him
You do realize that the government pretty much never built anything, the defense department contractors built everything. Nasa just stuck the different stages together and launched them. Nasa's main role aside from the actual launch was to train the astronauts and develop procedures for just about every possible contingency imaginable. So nothing has really changed, the contractors build the equipment and Nasa still runs the show. The only thing that's changed is that we've shifted the majority of the cost of R&D to the contractors.
@@marcmcfarland3642 NASA builds/designs lots of the custom one-off stuff, like rover parts, then those things that because used routinely get taken over by the private sector and NASA just buys them. Even those in primary resource production buy all their equipment from other companies to do it, that's just how a modern integrated economy works.
I feel like the connection they missed here is that Wernher Von Braun, a full blown Nazi got us to the moon in the first place. It wouldn't be that weird if Trump got us to Mars by comparison
Elon and Trump aren't all that different, sure politically they are almost polar opposites but they are both wealthy vanity-obsessed charismatic salesmen who believe crazy things. Elon at least has some other skills in business and engineering in addition to his marketing genius, whereas Trump is good at nothing but self-promotion.
I fk'n love that Bill Nye seems like a regular on the podcast.
The level of Alyssa's conviction and her commitment to becoming an astronaut is inspiring. Do what you love and keep pushing the limits!
This is some quality content. I’ve loved watching you since you were on Trevor Noah back in election 2016. Keep it up, @Klepper!
