Martika showed incredible maturity and awareness in creating this song, it was a different subject matter for her and she was only just 18-19 when she wrote it. Just amazing.

Remember hearing to this song in early 90's. I was 2-3 years old at most, at least I was still taking naps throughout the day like every little child does. My mother had been putting me in a baby carriage in the kitchen then, where a radio was always playing silently. Martika was still very popular back then and they played her songs very often, especially Toy Soldiers. Today I heard it on the radio after all these years, and believe me or not all that memories came back, and I litterally wanted to cry. I recall those early years of my life as the best, when everything had it's happy place. After that everything started to slowly fall apart into pieces.

I am in recovery from alcoholism, and this song just hit me in a way that it hadn't before. I have known this song since it came out in 1989 (I was 18) and it never really affected me the way it is now, having gone through the things I have in my adult life. I seriously haven't heard this song in a good 15 years...and in those 15 years, I have lived a lifetime, it seems. I nearly lost everything I hold dear...and going cold turkey and kicking the habit was the best thing I could have ever done. I still struggle at times, but I am glad to say I am now a non-drinker. :) I have nearly 10 months sober. My quit date was 9/11/16. To those still struggling: hold strong, and you will get through it. You just have to WANT to...that was a big part of it for me. I finally WANTED to get sober after relapsing so many times I have lost count.
Be strong my fellow alcoholics (and those struggling with drugs)....you got this.

I know it's about drug addiction, but to me the song and especially the chorus describes the life itself. Toy soldiers - those are us all, constantly fighting for education, jobs, money, goods. Each of us think he or she is the only one, but in reality we are just little gears in the huge machinery of the world. Life tears us apart bit by bit throughout the years, and though we keep on fighting we can never finally win, because everyone has to fall down (die) at some point, despite our best efforts. And the battle has to keep on going, cause it's how this world is made, and we are to small and weak to do anything about it. The song seems to have a happy mood to it, but deeply it's sad as hell. However it describes the life without unnecessary pathos, by just telling us "that's how it is and how it has to be here, the same for everyone, you can't do much about it so just keep on going with your life, whatever it is".

Don’t you give up on them, I think you might find a place in helping others that are going thru the same thing as you have. I try to do that with my experience with the 12 step programs. I think Justine Bieber does the same thing with God because of the experience he went thru in regards to the music industry, I wish I could put my arms around him also and tell him I am so sorry for how he suffered also and that I wasn’t there to help him also , just as you, but I did try, now I’m counting on you to put up the good fight for others AND for yourself. I will always watch how you are doing, your quite talented and you have a big heart although you have learned to hide it from the people you have been exposed to in that line of work. For some reason, people constantly call this song and Eminem's Like Toy Soldiers different versions of the same song, or at least implying it. They're not. And Eminem doesn't "ruin" this song for me for sampling it. I like both for different reasons.
Toy Soldiers is a song about battling cocaine addiction. The fact that Martika sings the same disturbing poem as the Kids Incorporated team really drives the message home, without explaining the real meaning. You're supposed to think about it. Think about what she's trying to make you understand. It's, dare I say, deep. But she can still save herself from the war.
Like Toy Soldiers is a song about failure to stop something when you, yourself are to blame, much like the person this song is about. One interesting thing of note is that the second part of the poem: (Bit by bit, torn apart) is sung by children, whereas only Martika sings that in the original. It's already too late to stop the casualties.
Martika uses techniques of powerful anthems and it feels like Martika is reaching to you, as she did her friend, to try and get you to understand. You can't fight mind altering drugs and you can't fight the truth. You'll use drugs and be used in a never ending cycle that can only be prevented from hurting you by not even participating.
Eminem isn't trying to help. Eminem is sitting in a chair and talking to you about how he fucked up and it's too late to stop it from doing permanent damage to those he loves. He understands he's done wrong and he's trying to escape the endless war before it takes more of his division. This song isn't tragic, it's picking the pieces up after a meltdown, constantly reminded of your foolishness in hindsight. Rappers who go too far, who can't take a blow, who have to have the last laugh are the leaders and role models of a gangsta rap culture and the leaders in an endless war as ignorant as a plastic toy soldier. If anyone should be trying to teach kids not to respond to threats with punches, and punches with guns, it's Em, but someone dissed Hailey and he lost control, with terrible effects. If someone attacks the ones you care about, can you practice what you preach?
In conclusion, the two songs are about totally different metaphors with toy soldiers, but both are sad songs trying to teach a different lesson to the viewer about a real problem that can't be fixed or fought, only prevented by just not giving into it or letting it affect you. You need to be strong. Strong of mind, strong of body, and stronger than cheap chinese toys.

Lots of people saying "Eminems version was better" it wasn't a version, it was a sample and obviously this use is better, or Eminem wouldn't have used it would he.
But what Eminem did with this sample was amazing and a credit to the original, both showing that in life we are all toy soldiers to higher powers, with avoidance being the only solution.

Eminem was a great song, but he sampled it, he has to ask her, or she can sue. obviously she let him use it. he was obviously inspired by this song.

I found this song randomly, and I listened this with my girlfriend 2 years ago, when we were 15...Then she left me for another one.. I told to my self that I would never listened to this song again... But tonight randomly, I found this song again, and now that I am 17, I'm listening to this crying and thinking about my new girlfriend.... and I promise to my self that I will listen to this song forever❤️❤️

Theres a very darkness to this song. Think about it a year before this song came out, we had The Lost Boys and Cry Little Sister. Than a year later we had this song. I remeber first hearing this song in the 1988 and just listening to it as a very dark song, which was cool for a woman that was singing for my age at the time girls. And really this song wasnt even going in that direction. Its a good song but also a dark one for its time. Its a very underrated song that in my mind should be re reviewed and put on a pedestal and just be looked at. I dont know about hall of fame but a song that should be looked at. Plus i give credit to Martika in her later days looked at by Minneapolis born Prince Rogers Nelson. Way to go Martika.

I HAVE NEVER HEARD THIS BEFORE. THIS WAS AWESOME. UNLIKE ARTISTS TODAY, HE ASKED MARTIKA FOR PERMISSION TO SAMPLE HER SONG. HIS LYRICS MADE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU WERE THERE.
I NOW UNDERSTAND WHY HE STEPPED AWAY FOR A WHILE. HAILEY IS OFF TO COLLEGE NOW AND HE'S STRONGER THAN EVER. ONE OF THE ILLE AND REAL MC'S IN THE GAME. SAY WHAT YOU WILL ABOUT HIM, BUT YOU CAN'T DENY HIS TALENT.
