    I have seen this musical all over the world. I can't wait to get to London in July to see it. May go a few times if I can score more tickets. But I am very very sad that they have replaced ''Now that I've seen her"' - most moving part of the show imo

      I dunno, man. It could be a colossal fuckup like Les Miserable was. The only musical that made a decent transition to film was Lloyd Webber's "Phantom". That's just my opinion...

    I like Ellen....I don't see her as a villain that needed to be hated or get rid off. The irony of her character is that even though she's far detached from the war, one that happened half across the world that later on she'll realize that she not that far from it at all...instead she became entangled by the consequence of its destruction. I wonder if MAYBE wil be sung during the scene where Chris went out to search for Kim. I hope they don't replace "Now that I've met her"/ "Her or Me" with that song, because these songs are really emotional & powerful expressions of Ellen's desperation & fear of possibly losing Chris to Kim.

    Who's the actor playing Chris at 0:09?

  • @musicaltheatergeek79
    @musicaltheatergeek79 8 лет назад +2

    They screw up this show when they cast 30+ actors (or even late 20s). Kim is only supposed be 17 at the start, and Chris not much older than 20, and they only age 3 years in the interim. It's stated that Chris is a driver for the U.S. embassy, and during the last days of Saigon, the drivers were barely 18. In fact, much has been written about the extreme youth of the remaining troops in Vietnam, after the Paris Peace Accord of 1973 (which essentially ended US military combat), and how they preferred the bars and whores. Saigon was like one big frat party! The opening number "The Heat Is On in Saigon" captures that atmosphere very well.
    Anyway, a lot is lost when they cast over-the-hill actors, because instead of looking at Kim and Chris as tragic victims of circumstance, they come off as whiny, annoying adults who made poor decisions -- especially that Ellen, who is supposed to be the same age as Chris, but in almost every production she's portrayed as a thirtysomething harpy. If they ever make a movie, I hope they cast age-appropriate actors. It would be even more noticeable on film, if they cast older.

    • @Ebathora
      @Ebathora 8 лет назад +3

      The Kim they cast was only 17 when she was cast as well. Chris is slightly older, but definitely one of the most boyish looking Chris' I've seen cast. IDK about Ellen. I agree about the importance of how the actors' portray the characters, but I think this revival tried to do their best to honor the original cast.

    • @everettjacobs4927
      @everettjacobs4927 8 лет назад +3

      You have to keep in mind that the role of Chris is extremely high and difficult to perform. Most male voices don't fully mature until the early to mid 30s, and so to find someone in their early twenties who can sing the role well enough and healthily enough for 8 performances a week, is a VERY difficult feat.

    • @H1delta
      @H1delta 8 лет назад

      Can I assume you're not going to see the revival when it opens on Broadway in 2017?

    • @musicaltheatergeek79
      @musicaltheatergeek79 8 лет назад +2

      Probably not. I don't care for the new orchestrations and lyrics, nor the replacement of "Please" with "Too Much For One Heart" (but at least they share the same melody) and especially "Now That I've Seen Her" with the mediocre "Maybe." They're always revising this show, but seem to make it worse. IMO, the original Broadway production was the best. In London, they were still ironing out the kinks, but by the time it arrived in NYC two years later, it was perfection.

    They could have added a duet where Chris & Ellen first meet and how they fell in love. Some of the characters in the show is so under written. I find the Engineer to be over written.

    • @JAKE216
      @JAKE216 11 лет назад +6

      Yes, I don't think adding another number for Ellen will suddenly win people over to the character and I feel "Now That I've Seen Her" already delivers pretty much the same message as I hear "Maybe" is intended to. Personally, I would have preferred a solo for Thuy. He has the potential to be so much more than just the "villain" and, as a previous poster mentions, he is sadly under written. Likewise with the Les Mis movie, "Suddenly" was a number that achieved little when, if a new song had to be written, it could have fleshed out another under written character, Enjolras.
