- This is a story I felt i had to share...it goes back to 1955 and the austin jubilee, junior grand prix of j40 pedal cars, but not only that, it takes a twist and a turn..... I only met Ted quite recently at his back street machine shop where he sorted my king pin bushes...Two of my friends independently told me the storey about Ted ...so I asked Ted if he would share it, and I believe he does so wonderfully ....enjoy ( sorry for poor lighting )
The video of the 1955 junior grand prix .... • Junior Grand Prix (1955)
Please send our thanks to Ted, what a lovely man and a brilliant storyteller, I watched that pedal car race at the Revival this year but never realised the history behind it.
Thanks for arranging this episode Brian.
thanks Paul it was all a bit last minute but Ted performed delightfully....he might have another up his sleeve actually !!
This is such a charming tale and brilliantly told by the man himself. Great that its now recorded and no longer just oral history, but a "primary source document" for the future. My wife watched it and her eyes filled with tears about 2 minutes in!
its a lovely storey isnt it? and Ted tells its so well bless him....me and sas were both balling hahahah. that is exactly how I saw this, it needed to be documented ...cheers Steve
Could sit all night with old boys like Ted. What a great story, thanks to him and yourself for sharing it with us.
same as that mate....our pleasure
Fantastic and heart warming story. Ted is just one of those guys you could sit and listen to all his stories all day.
my thoughts exactly
Thanks for sharing. We’re lucky enough to call Ted a friend and he has many interesting stories. Plus he is such a skilled engineer and can make anything.

Great story and a what a wonderful chap Ted is! Well done for getting Ted to share his amazing memories! Thank-you! 👍😎

Good work Bryan! Ted's tale of the Austin pedal car, Juan Manuel Fangio, two Jaguar Mk VII's , and the magic helmet - very hair raising! Glad the family survived. Looking forward to more tales from Ted . . .

What a great story! It’s always good to hear these stories from back in the day! The difficult bit is getting the old guys to tell them in front of a camera. Good work to you and Ted! More please?
thanks Pete ...maybe more from Ted but im keeping an eye out for others..i think its important mate the passing of oral stories ... otherwise when when all this digital shit is fried there will be nothing !!!

Thank you so much 😀
My Uncle Ted , a Great tour Guide at Revival, the things he knows about old cars is Amazing.
lovely fella too!
Thanks for bringing Ted into our lives, what a great story! A sweet gentleman and a talented machinist. I'm so glad he was wearing that lucky helmet and lived to tell the tale.
Excuse me while I climb up on my soapbox for a moment. Helmets are so incredibly important. Just yesterday my thirteen year old daughter brought home her first skateboard, I told her to pick out the most awesome, coolest helmet she could find and I'd pay any price without hesitation. I'm a bit proud to say she asked for and accepted some advice from me! I've wrecked a motorcycle helmet and two bicycle helmets(defying death or destruction in every case),and would never ride without the best one I can afford. Please for everyone you love, and your own sake as well, always wear a smile and a good quality helmet.
thanks mate...wise words..👌
@@oakswamp You have the best comment community on RUclips. I've never seen an unkind post, and I read most of them. I've said it before, what you are doing is totally unique. That doesn't just mean local rock-a-billy and hotrods with clever editing. You have a lovely family and a huge circle of friends that make Oak Swamp a special place. I just want to be a part of it all in some small way. If I wasn't on the other side of the world I would see you at the car shows or stop in for tea. You would probably get sick of my stories!
@@jfu5222 thank you mate ....you are part of it , right here right now...without you and the others there would be no community....when I started this I didnt expect anyone to be so active so often, and it really makes the difference to me to know I have you guys behind me....its a great community I feel privileged to have you ...hang loose brother
@@oakswampI think I know how you feel, when I stop to think how fortunate my life has been I can get pretty choked up. No, that's not dust in my eyes!
By the way, my name's Jim, it's good to make friends across the globe, the best thing about computers really!
damn straight ! thanks Jim
Fantastic story, so glad you were able to persuade Ted to recall the memories, wish him all the best for 2023 and the same for you and your family. Paul
cheers dude...indeed i will and all the best to yourselves
Best thing I've seen all week! (and I didn't cry... I had something in my eye) Cheers from the Shed

wonderfull story, thanks for sharing with Ted. I love pedalcars, I've 18 of them, most around the '30 in rusty condition as I like it. Cheers from France both!
cheers.....no way , if i came to france?😉
@@oakswamp you're welcome, I'm living between Béziers and Saint Chinian. So you can take the 1930 radiator back again and I also have a hood with sidepanels from between 1925/30😎
the best part of france....? that would be awesome...I think Sas needs a holiday🤣
@@oakswamp no problem, just say it some days before, to be sure I'm not on holyday😁

Well what a lovely little film about Ted. It nearly made me cry too. I'm glad they all survived the crash. He still has the J40 which is great, but I wonder what happened to the Helmet. I hope he still has it. Anyway that's brightened up my morning. Thanks 👍❤️

Thank you for sharing, what a lovely story! We were fortunate enough to get a place in the settrington cup j40 race at Goodwood where my 8 yr old son raced his j40 with no.47 on it.
my pleasure , what year was that in?
@@oakswamp September just gone, 2022. It was great fun to be part of the race, he didnt win and there was no J40 as a prize but he thoroughly enjoyed himself!
@@garrickroyle5675 ahhh ... brilliant, I think its a great concept...
I never expected that kraken story, a.k.a. the ferret
hahahah
Nice one Ted 👍
Thanks 👍
Mate that was wonderful, and yes I had a moment 😢😁👍🏻
hahaha thanks mate ...me and Sas watched it back and both sat there sobbing ..he told it well..
brilliant. Thanks guys.
Great video, I used to have a pedal car back in the early fifties, it was one Dad had picked up, there was no front grille on it, so Dad cut out a piece of plywood and fitted in the aperture, with the help of some 'poverty chrome', i.e. aluminium paint and a Riley badge Dad had obtained from somewhere it was a 'Riley' The J40s were always a bit 'upmarket, check out the history, very interesting. One kid did have a MK1 Zephyr by 'Mobo' I think it was. Happy New Year from wet and windy N.E. Somerset.
thanks Jonathan...happy new year bro
Brilliant!
thanks Phil
Wonderfully
👍
What a story 😭😭😭😭😭. So good of you to take time out to let Ted tell the story
I did actually cry at him telling this...
@@oakswamp Me too
That's fantastic!
thanks dude
Superb!
thanks
How cool is that and what a great story I enjoyed watching it great video as always Brian and Ted.
thanks mate
What an interesting guy Ted is. I hope this is the first of many.
There's a Mini Cooper at his place, I suspect there is a story to go with that.
there another one in him im sure mate
That's awesome!! 16mph average in a pedal car is pretty damn quick if you ask me!! BTW you can block those windows that go over the main video at the end if you want to see the whole thing uninterrupted.
thanks Dr...flying id say, ah ill check that out !
Nice one Ted!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks swamp. I needed that.
my pleasure....👌
@@oakswamp tell ted...kick some ass.. we all need it.......
great story Ted..a bit of racing history..even with the FANG in it..HAPPY NEW YEAR BRYAN, SASH AND FAMILY..AND TED....
Cheers Rob...all the very best to you guys too mate👊
Amazing story. Juan Manuel Fangio let up at last.
isnt it....
My grandfather bought me a red Austin j.40 for Christmas 1952 when I was only two.he got it then as he only had a short time to live and sadly I have no memory of him.l do however have memories of trying to play in the pedal car when I was a little older absolutely no chance as soon as dad put it outside, every kid in the vicinity would descend on it and I could never enjoy it in peace!!!😠
another awesome story in that right there jim...😁
Great story. Sadly it's much harder for "normal" kids today to get such an amazing opportunity. Well done Ted. 👏👏👏
so true....even then, thanks
@@oakswamp in the early seventies when I started in the garage trade (following Dad and Grandad) near StAlbans, I had the pleasure of living a few doors from a real proper old school "motor engineer" called Sid Pettit. He had so many stories to tell, you could listen 24/7 for a month and only hear a few. He started aged 9 with the proper "Bentley Boys" at Brooklands tied to the inner wing of blower Bentleys listening for abnormal bearing noises etc. At speeds in excess of 100mph. 🤣 such an interesting life. He knew so many of the early racers and engineers, rubbing shoulders with the world's best. Sadly long gone now, but just another "proper old school bloke" like Ted. Keep things going buddy, I wouldn't miss a minute. 👍👏👏❤️
@@The1958Rocker cheers buddy...would of loved to have met him...its such a shame when cool stories are lost.... lso happy Ted shared this with us...and he told it so well
@@The1958RockerWhen I was younger I was always chasing after excitement and going out of my way to experience as much of life as I could stuff in. I didn't see myself getting old and probably took too much risk. I have made it past 56 years and I'm still kind of an idiot. I do have alot of stories, and the good ones have me cheating death or destruction! Until recently I never thought I might be one of those old guys telling tales to the younger generation, but I kinda hope I can get an audience like that someday. Thanks for sharing, I'd love to meet that old timer. I bet the 1958 Rocker has a spellbinding yarn or two of his own!
