I think Chris Walla from Death Cab for Cutie played one of these when I saw them at Radio City , I’m that was a while ago and he’s since kind of retired from the band.
I'm not sure when I first feasted my eyes on the Fender Starcaster. What I do think occurred to me was that Fender was trying to compete with a specific Gibson model, the Trini Lopez 335. Anybody else catch that?
I went into this video clearing my mind of the original biases I had against the Starcaster & the Wide Range humbuckers that were being sold in the 1970s when I first started playing guitar. Everything that Michael says is 'cool' about this guitar was what made it unpopular in 1970s. I think they were also the most pricey model in Fender's range when they hit the catalog. Having viewed the video, I am hearing a dull sounding almost 'dead' sound. Now that's only going to appeal to those who came later with the grunge and indie music. It certainly wasn't a sound that was desired in 1970s and through most of the 1980s. I note Michael is playing to that sound. It seems hard to get a jangle out of it. Considering the age, I'd say the pickups are also on the quiet side. Not enough Presence? In short, Michael has just reinforced my preconception from my experience playing these guitars when they were new in the 1970s. Also is this the guitar being advertised on Reverb as ex Michael Lemmo on Norman's shop page? If so, you really should declare that.
This was fenders answer to the Gibson es 335. It has a thicker tone than the typical fenders but yet plays like a fender with easy to play low action and the fender neck feel. One other player that Michael did not mention is Leo nocentelli of the meters who used a starcaster on so many tunes
I always have thought the lowest ebb of Fender or Gibson is when Gibson tries to design a Fender, or vice versa, as in this case. It doesn't mean the guitars don't sound good or play well, but there is something pathetic in copying your competitor.
Wow you finally found something "rare" (not the everyday redoes), so then you could have told the history about it and so on, how its built with specs and stuff.... but no!!!
They used to ask you to play quietly when they were recording. Most of us would just stop altogether. The few that continued playing would get looks of disapproval from everyone else and eventually get the hint.
Given a choice between a Strat and this guitar or pretty much any other Fender, I'd take the other one. This is from the worst era of Fender's manufacturing.
Dream guitar tbh. Dark and big sound. Starcaster should be waaay more popular.
Here for "So Real" 🙏
Loving the Jeff master track 'So Real' Grace is the album of thee' album of the 90's possibly of all time... bless Mr Buckley R.I.P 🏴
Michael looks like he won The Masters. Awesome.
Mid ‘70’s CBS Fender funkiness. A companion w/ the Tele Deluxe.
“Hey, we should make a headstock that looks like a duck’s bill” - some guy at Fender around 1976
I can’t unsee it 😂
The he waddled away, waddle waddle.😂
“And make the body that looks like an ES335 ripoff” - some other guy at Fender around 1976
@@kedilervekuslar8791 but, ya know... offset so it can't fit in any other case.
So true fender duck 🦆😅😅😅😅
That guitar sounds great! I want it !!!
Nice chord playing
Let’s Go! Awesome video! Thanks Lemmo, thanks Jen!

Jen is PUMPED😂
That loop song at the end was dope
I'm so annoyed, I've heard it but cannot think of the name/artist
I want to say it's the theme song from Silent Hill 2, "Theme of Laura", but it's not
@@petevadelnieks Welp if you suddenly remember leave a comment!
It’s “Sugar For The Pill” by Slowdive
Thank you so much@@timvanboening9432 I listened to that song so much when it came out
5:42 gotta love some Slowdive!
I’d love to have one of these.
Isn't this the same one currently listed on Reverb as having be "previously owned by Michael Lemmo?"
Love when Lemmo does Buckley.
Very Well Done.
😎♥ and still sounds Fender!!
Just remember: Everyday is STRATurday!
Dream guitar of mine. Hopefully one day !
Didn't you feature this exact guitar a few months ago?
What's the name of the tune Michael plays at 3:20?
Also want to know that :)
⚓️ Thanks Jen 🎉 Mike 🌈
3:20 - what's the name of this tune ?
i have a photo of eddie van halen in his 5150 studio with a starcaster sitting next to frankenstein that's pretty cool.
Great sounding
Anyone trying to figure out the riff at 3:20 here's a hint, it's I drop D
What song is it?

It was definitely Fender's answer to Gibson semi-hollows.
And not their first, @@Tim85-y2q. I'm convinced this model post dates the thinline Tele models that they came out with in 1969 and 1972.
Hey Mike, where's the golf game with that jacket?
Does anybody know what the first track he plays is?
Jeff Buckley
Is Lemmo slowly turning into the Joker (of guitars) lol A lot of green !!!
Day number “I can’t remember” of wanting y’all to have mark on as a guest

What's the first chord progression he plays? Sounds like it could be Radiohead.
Kingfish Ingram is holding one on his debut album cover. I assume he played it on the album.
the jeff beck cover is awesome
Which song of Jeff Becks is it?
Is that the second one?
Licks w/ Lemmo
👍✌❤😎
Fender should reissue the Starcaster and the Coronado.
Great, as always!
Randy Bachman palyed one often...

Anyone seen Michael Lemmo and Bailey Zimmerman in the same room #doppelganger
Lemmo! Buy it man!😊
Strats are so boring this is the real deal

I was curious about the extra knob.
Annoying playing by someone in the background! All silent for GOTD. Respect

What is with this silly green jacket? No matter how you dress you're still a dude from the Philly PA area
Iggles Midnight Green. I thought we had established that?
@@roberthoffecker7223 who or what is iggles?
@@roberthoffecker7223 iggles? Oh you mean Eagles right? It was never established that's what it was. It still looks yuppy and stupid.
