    Remember that one time you said "this is a 19mm bolt"? That was awesome. Thanks a million.

  • @justinwilliams7148
    @justinwilliams7148 2 года назад +4

    Thank you for this video. Another video recommended a tool to fit on the tensioner bolt itself. I would have been wrenching on the tensioner wheel's special bolt instead of that 19mm bolt. This helps a lot.

  • @leomannpictures
    @leomannpictures 6 лет назад +15

    FWIW. My preferred method is to fit the belt to the alternator last. It's the closest (and smallest) pulley, so I can work the tensioner wrench with one hand while the other hand is free to slip the belt on and off. That's what works for me best.

      leomannpictures I was coming down to the comments to say just this , it took me alone 5 mins to install the belt by fitting everything but the alternator

      Rod Salka you have to push it so it’s not at full tension but because of it’s location it’s easiest to do last for me but maybe that wasn’t for you , I hope you were able to get the belt on though

    just another thankyou for this simple, easy to follow guide.
    Fixed my broken belt in less than 2 hours, including going to the shop to fetch the new belt.
    And agree I pushed the belt over the water pump pully last, whilst tensioning it myself, and it went on pretty easily.

    You didn't show yourself actually putting the belt onto the tensioner pulley. It's not easy. These belts are tighter than they should be IMO.

    A+ Video Gil. Showed all the steps. I am not a mechanic, but a big fan of DIY. While I was doing this job, my second pair of hands went AWOL at the critical moment when I needed to loosen the tensioner to get the new belt on. Forced to get creative with my 15 inch swivel breaker bar, I was able to release the tension, then wedged the bar under what I think is called the "radiator core support". It took a little finesse to get the belt on over the crankshaft pulley, but it was manageable. There may be other improvisational methods to complete the job solo. I just wanted to add that it is possible, though not fun. Thanks again. Your video is great :)

    Great video man! Very informative and appreciate that very much.
    My mother has a 2004 Rav4 and complains now that it is squeaking. I need to inspect the belt and potentially replace. As always I like to do a little research to see if I have any hiccups because every vehicle has its quirks.
    I don't think I'll jack the whole frontend up and just do the front right. May not even need to jack up but of course it makes for easier work taking that wheel and side skirt off.
    In any case the Rav4 is a great car! I do NOT like the new look Rav4 look. Just looks so ugly to me am I alone in this?

    This Video saved me a lot of aggravation since the 2004 rav4 tensioner has the 19 mm nut to relieve the tension on it , unlike the newer ones .
    Side note : At 10:23 that squeal sounds like your Alternator bearing is going out ?
    But maybe its just the new belt squeaking a little ..
    Anyway , Thanks again for this helpfull video .

    • @techguy1678
      @techguy1678 5 лет назад +3

      Update: We're good. I used the tensioner tool which was longer and gave me better leverage. When working with a hydraulic tensioner, you have to pull slowly vs a spring based tensioner. Another trick is, to get the belt on all the pulleys and leave the waterpump pulley for the end. That's rounded off and when the tensioner is compressed, you easily slip the belt over it.

    Thanks for sharing.. One tip! before you replace the belt soak it in protectant lubricant...(spf40 or better) you can even use leather protector, do a search on the best kinds to use. some say
    303 aerospace protectant is really good. it can make your belt last 10x longer than normal.. literally people can get hundreds of thousands of miles from a belt if you just protect it first before you install it.. cheers

    Great video! I plan on using this when it's time to change the belt on my 03 Rav. There's a lower pitched rubbing noise coming from the belt area when started in colder weather. Goes away when warmed up Not sure if the belt is a little off tension, old or what? I bought a stick from this generation Rav a couple of years ago, as I read over and over there's a faulty ECM on the automatics. Any major problems with you Rav? Mine has 169,000 miles. Not overly powerful off the line by any means, but it's a fun little SUV.

    Thanks still helped me in 2024, with regards a two man job, managed to do it myself by locking my ratchet in place on the tensioner by popping a screwdriver though the hole in the handle (Inoco ratchet) and then pushing up with a small pribar the belt over the tensioner. Mind you you should of taken the time to either clean or sorted the leak out on your sump plug and sprayed brake clean around the tank to make it shiny again.
