Thank you for the spreadsheet idea. I am curious how you do the washer and dryer automation now that you are on Home Assistant. Smartthings Multi sensor works, but not the vibration detection you showed on the previous video. Did I miss a newer video that showed a different washer dryer setup?
Reed, any chance we can get a native Excel version of your spreadsheet to download instead of html. Tried opening in Excel but all the formatting and tabs are lost.
Love the video. I did a very similar automation with the Roomba but hooked it up to go 10 minutes after the Ring alarm was set to Away. Had to tweak the sensitivity of the motion sensors to avoid it triggering the alarm. Neighbours weren't impressed 😂
I just started my smart home journey and Reid, you are a life saver! your videos and helpful tips are detailed and informative. so a big thank you and keep up the good work
@@SmartHomeSolver I just showed her how to do that last night 😂 the echos don't have the audio quality a real stereo would provide but... When we're walking around the house doing stuff I'm not really concerned about that lol
I liked the surprise ending. When you mentioned no alerts of the door is open, my mind jumped to my kids or someone just leaving the door open. It's so hard to think of all the possibilities when coming up with helpful automations.
3:20 - I have exactly the same to disable the notification when I'm exiting. I tied it also into an input boolean, timer and contact sensor so that if mail was in the box (separate automation) and I opened the mailbox (based on my opening the front door first), then it would turn off the input boolean that there was mail in the box. You've given me some great ideas for a number of other bits. Thanks, Reed.
You should definitely look into Adaptive Lighting Integration. It's fantastic alongside setting default levels for morning/evening circadian coloring and fading of lights. Sounds like you have nearly replicated it, but it does it almost magically behind the scenes. You can also take local control of course and then set up an automation to reset it OR if you turn off then back on it starts controlling it again.
Hey, I don't usually post comments...but I'm. Huge smart home fan...and your Chanel has given me a lotta ideas and it's just really enjoyable content..I love your style and overall this is just an appreciation comment..☺️
Great tip on the doorbell notification Reed ! .. did it at home to customize Alexa greeting people coming in and saying goodbye when leaving ! Btw, I also flowed your tips on smart blinds with a little bit of tweak.. I customized my motorized blinds using aquara which has ambient light sensor.. pretty useful if you want to control the blinds based on the amount of light coming in the window ! Hi Buddy! You can add a silence button on the doorbell automation to disable notifications for a set amount of time. If you look for actionable notifications in home assistant that should cover it :)

Awesome video mate, your house is looking amazing, funny when my ring doorbell goes, I've got 2 ring chimes that sound, 4 amazon echos announce there's someone at the door and I get a notification on phone and my watch 😁

For my lights automations, I made like a in home room location, so instead of relaying on just motion where you need to be in constant movement to keep the lights off, or if you turned them off and want to keep them off, with that is possible. I see you are using the Home Assistants inbuild automations functionality, have you tried Node-Red? I find it useful as it helps me to visualise the process, but I do wonder if the internal automations have any benefits I am missing?

Hey Jasper you are right I need some bias lighting in there! It definitely helps take a lot of the strain away. Yeah a wyze light bulb works great and there are so many good options out there. I need to figure out which one I want.
"This way all my lights work exactly as I want them to, and I don't even have to think about it" Sounds to me like you're thinking about it quite a lot, though 😂 But for real, congrats on wrapping up moving and for setting up all these cool automations!
Hey Reed, Is it possible to cycle through Home Kit scenes with a single Home Kit compatible button (Hue Button)? I want to avoid having 4 individual buttons if I have 4 Home Kit scenes available...
Hey Smart Home Solver - Good content! Very useful. Do you happy to have any tips or videos you know of for using the Ikea switch with home assistant. I was having some success with home assistant until the wife wanted buttons again 🤦. I know there are so many options but Ikea ones are so cheap! I can get them in Homeassistant but could old track battery level and not a switch. Thanks you any guidance
Is there a way to build image recognition into automation so that things trigger based on whether there's a person in the frame or maybe a little person in the frame?
Thanks for the tip with the IKEA switch to trigger babysitter or guest. I definitely need to put a manual switch at the front door to turn on and off the auto-lock on my smart lock. Sometimes I go out in the garden without my phone and get locked out of the house. Luckily it hasn't happed when I'm home alone.... yet. Maybe I should put a keypad on the outside as well.
Great video! This is super helpful in getting my smart home setup going!! I've got the G4 doorbell and set up the automation for motion, but there is almost a 20 sec delay between the "live" feed that pops up on the home assistant live view notification on my iPhone 11pro and the actual feed from the protect web interface. Anyone else seeing the same issue? Is this an issue with the RTSP feed?
Thanks for the vid. Two questions, what couch is that in the living room, and what's the video background wall where you had your headphones (and other things) clipped?
Reed, Thanks for the spreadsheet, much appreciated! Do you have any updates on the spreadsheet you use to keep track of automations? I was curious as to how that's worked for you since last year or if you have gone a different way to track all of them.
@smarthomesolver have you thought of setting a voice command to disable or make an exception to the lights at night for when you have people over? For example, you have friends over for the evening and everyone is up talking till midnight, in order to stop the lights dimming or turning off, add a voice command of "we have guests/friends" and it will leave lights on.
Another good video (made even more fun by the sense of humor you inject into these videos)! 👍 Looks like you might be really getting advanced with Home Assistant! Have you played with integrating NodeRed for some of your automation ideas - NodeRed was quite indispensable for the smart platform I developed for our medical research lab ( especially since our studies would be running in multiple remote locations sending data to data lakes in the cloud). Needless to say, I have since integrated it into my home automation as well. In short, might be worth considering if you haven't already? BTW, which UST projector did you end up going with (got a glimpse towards the end of this video). And did you add any insulation (e.g. fiberglass or mineral wool) to the interior walls / ceiling to prevent / minimize sound traveling to other / adjacent rooms from the media / theater room? Edit: Nevermind - just saw your new home tour video which has a slightly better look at the UST and looks like it might be the Optoma. Nice! Keep up the great work.
Thanks for all the great videos. I’m moving into a new home and already planning my automations. I was wondering what brand of motions lights did you utilize?
Every time I see your electronics rack with the headphones on it I keep thinking it is a gun rack from a movie. Lol. Wanted to give you a little insight on your washer dryer setup. I know you have the exhaust fan in the laundry room which is a good idea. When the washer is on by itself have that fan on to pull out excess humidity. When the the Dryer is running it is already pulling air from the room to exhaust outside. If you have the dryer and the exhaust fan on at the same time then you are creating a strong negative pressure which needs make up air from somewhere and it also wastes energy. You may be able to leave the exhaust fan off when the dryer is running as the dryer itself will act like an exhaust fan pulling humidity and heat out of the room while it is operating. Just my two cents. Keep up then great work. I learned a lot about automation from your videos. I even copied your setup where I get messages on my phone when the washer and dryer is done. I do get false alerts once and a while because I am using a standard setup on smart things. I decided to not play with webcore yet as it’s fate is questionable.
Great video, thanks for sharing your successes and frustrations with us. I'm still looking for that Bat signal you have in your office in your Amazon lists...
You caught my attention at automations for UniFi G4 doorbell 😁. I use many Protect cameras and UniFi network, currently with a Google/Nest Doorbell. Can you send notification automations like video feeds from G4 Doorbell to Google/Nest displays/mini's yet?
Hi mr Smart home solver boss man! Love your vids! Quick question, what PIR sensors are compatible with the smart life app? I have a few smart bulbs and sockets and want to be able to automate them by motion. Many thanks
Reed-I learn a ton from you. Thanks for the inspiration. I think the buttons are a huge benefit when voice or scrolling through an app are too slow or impractical. IKEA with Smartthings was working great but now die in a day or two with latest device handler. I’ve been all over the forums where others have the same problem, but thought I’d see if you’ve run into the same problem (since mid-May or so) since this video was made. Some say it could be defective switches or batteries, which may be true on new ones but also affected older working ones. I also noticed that the device handlers changed and the hubs got that upgrade to support local. Do you still recommend them?
Automation vs human intuition, i struggle with this myself and i live on my own! The smart home needs to work together our intuition and that is the challenge. For example, my car has automatic headlights and wipers, but it does not stop me from wanting to control them myself! As such, i find some automations more annoying than they are useful.
Here is the link amzn.to/3tPGRDL I saw them at Home Depot so I bought one. It worked perfectly so I bought more. It doesn't need a neutral wire and my family loves them so far.
Hi from Italy Reed!!! You are really great... such a smart guy!!! Can you tell me the name of the corner light you use while working out please!!! Such a great idea... but I have no idea where to look for such a light! Thanks and keep this channel going it is fantastic!!!
I feel like you would like using Node-RED in Home Assistant. I don't have a single native HA Automation set up, they're all in Node-RED. It adds a lot of powerful capabilities. Like that "limiting how often an automation can trigger" thing is a single rate-limit node. Super simple.
I agree I need to give Node-RED another shot. I tried it a few times but didn't give it enough time to fully learn everything so I have been using the native automations. I also prefer code over drag and drop coming from a programming background.
@@SmartHomeSolver I'm a software developer by trade, but I don't much care for dealing with Yaml. I don't mind the drag-and-drop nodes since they still match the logical flow that code has, but it also simplifies parallel execution of tasks. The only thing that took me a little bit to understand was the concept of messages, but that's not too big of a hurdle and can be mostly ignored, but is very useful when you need it.
What motion sensors do you recommend since samsung stopped selling the smart things ones I really need some but can't pin down which ones worth it? (I use a smart things hub with mostly hue lights and kasa smart plugs)
I'm suprised you don't use a lux sensor. I bought the xiaomi mijia. It's super useful for setting different lighting levels if it's dark and cloudy or super sunny.
Those IKEA blinds use a rechargeable battery which is great so you don't have to deal with wires. I can't remember how long the battery is supposed to last but I think it's around 6 months. There are others like Lutron where you have the option to choose battery or wired. I'll be doing a video on automated blinds soon!
With your office lights changing brightness depending on time of day. Is there a reason for using the Choose Action rather than just using something like this "{% if now().hour > 22 %}1{% elif now().hour < 7 %}1{% else %}100{% endif %}" for the brightness percentage value?
After the data leak and over all bad decisions Ubiquiti has been making I’m surprised you went with them. Personally for security cameras I’m more of a Hikvision fan. And for our video doorbell we use the doorbird intercom.

Can you do a video on smart watches integration with home assistant
Which Hub did you use to disable motion alerts when you open front door - Home Assistant, Alexa or Smart things ?
How did you create your own custom dashboard for multiple and different platform products under one thing??
I'm suprised you don't use a lux sensor. I bought the xiaomi mijia. It's super useful for setting different lighting levels if it's dark and cloudy or super sunny.
Thanks for the great video again! BTW nice watch, I couldn't find it in the stores. Is it a special Nike version?
Does the Unifi doorbell work with your Brilliant through HA?
Hey Reed, how do you get current to your blinds? Do you have lines in the wall?
Those IKEA blinds use a rechargeable battery which is great so you don't have to deal with wires. I can't remember how long the battery is supposed to last but I think it's around 6 months. There are others like Lutron where you have the option to choose battery or wired. I'll be doing a video on automated blinds soon!
Is there any advantage to trigger your roborock using Alexa vs using the Xiaomi Mi home integration in Home Assistant?
With your office lights changing brightness depending on time of day. Is there a reason for using the Choose Action rather than just using something like this "{% if now().hour > 22 %}1{% elif now().hour < 7 %}1{% else %}100{% endif %}" for the brightness percentage value?
After the data leak and over all bad decisions Ubiquiti has been making I’m surprised you went with them.
Personally for security cameras I’m more of a Hikvision fan. And for our video doorbell we use the doorbird intercom.
