Mr. Money Mustache on The Shockingly Simple Secret to Happiness | MHFI 143 | Mile High FI Podcast

- Doug and Carl interview friend, fellow Longmonster, and FIRE legend Mr. Money Mustache (aka Pete Adeney).
When Tim Ferriss interviewed Pete, they ended by talking about Pete’s desire to own a local community gathering space. This is the jumping off point for the Mile High FI conversation.
But, they go a lot deeper too. No talk about index funds or the 4% Rule. That stuff has been covered. Instead, this conversation is about happiness, journeys, and meaning.

This must be refreshing for Pete.
Carl loved your intro story on finding MMM. Personal narratives are powerful and helpful. MMM's comment about knowing what to do and yet not being able to do it is pretty much the human experience summed up. We're emotional animals that act rationally, not the other way around.
Thanks so much. I'm so happy I did.
And if only we all acted rationally...
Happy to be the first one that likes this video 🎉. Was looking a few days ago for a fresh MMM interview
Thanks! Doug and I really like this one. It was good to talk about what happen after you figure out money.
Great interview. I got goosebumps.
Thanks Rakesh!

Hello from the Midwest....I like hearing Pete's thoughts on life and happiness.
Hello from a previous Midwesterner!

Your econome speech was awesome.
Thanks so much! That was one of the highlights of my life. I'm so thankful Diania believed in me enough to have me speak at there.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who wears one gray puma sock and one black puma sock.
Haha! I usually get more than 20,000 steps per day, so my socks have short, hard lives.
A little known fact is that just like beavers, socks mate for life. With me though, it's not uncommon for one of them to prematurely lose its mate (holes due to wear). When this happens, the sock has to hook up with another sock. That's what happened here. :)
Your channel and this podcast popped up on my Facebook. So glad it did (would have probably seen it from your Twitter anyways lol). Such an excellent interview. My wife and I started purposefully focusing more on FI/RE lifestyle just late November of last year, and you OGs keep us motivated haha!
Thanks so much! And, is there any thing we can help with? We often answer reader questions on the podcast. In any case, Happy New Year!
Hey! Glad you found the channel and podcast! Let us know if you have any topic or question ideas. -Doug
@@1500Days You guys may already have an episode on it, but is there a "best way" to do health insurance for the early retiree (around 40 years old)? Since I know little about the subject, I am sure it is too broad of question, but that is something that stresses us out. My wife is an elementary school teacher, and we use her insurance for now. Thank you!
1:04:10 had to open up the video to see how bad was it. Great conversation though, very wholesome.
Lol. Dating in the usa
Good luck mmm. You've taught me a lot
Great interview guys! Those were some really thoughtful questions, really enjoyed it. You've had on some really great guests and I agree with your list of favorites other than.....how do you NOT INCLUDE J$$MONEY?! 😁 I thought that was a great one as well... keep up the good work 🤙
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, you're right, J$ was awesome
Great episode! What was the reference that Pete gave for testing your portfolio allocation?
Great discussion fellas - good to know I’m not the only person on earth that views the stairs option as an opportunity!
Also… is that Pete grasping a piece of celery in the thumbnail?
Yep, celery FTW!
I love stairs too. Escalators and elevators are for the weak!
I used to work in a 15 story office building. For a workout, I'd walk up the stairs and take the elevator back down. My record was 25 times (375 floors) which took me a couple of hours. This was followed by me throwing up (the only time I've done this after a workout).
All while still wearing your work clothes and carrying a briefcase, right? haha still though… 375 floors… what a legend !
Pay to remove the negative … I really want to apply a lot of these concepts!
I’m just beginning my FIRE journey as a social worker. How do I get involved in the movement? How do I connect with people to be interviewed and get interviews as well?
About walking in cold being good for you, what about walking in heat, ie. 90F and up - always seem to wait for less hot parts of the day, but is there any benefit to getting super hot, (rather than cold)?
I'm not sure about that other than sweating and getting your heart rate up. I know saunas are great, but I'm not sure it's hot enough to get the sauna like benefits. (Not a doctor, not medical advice) :) But stay hydrated in any case!
Great interview!
Thanky you!

Hey Carl hey Doug hey Pete. Perhaps you guys are interested in staying with me over the summer in Cleveland to help on my home project and on the in-law Airbnb suite. Carl has seen some of the photos but could definitely use your carpentry skills. Cleveland in the summer is great. We have the National Park the islands on lake Erie and cedar point if you like roller coasters.
Bobby, it's nice to here from you over here on RUclips! Are you going to EconoMe this year?
See you Econome
Thank you for the ideas. I wish y’all would not cuss.
Thanks, Carol! Sorry about that. I know we get that feedback sometimes and we understand. Thanks for watching
Those aren’t cuss words it was French words , You were listening in english😂
