There hasn’t been a more beautiful and ethereal moment in video game history than entering the city of tears and sitting on that bench with quirrel watching the rain pour as the most beautiful song plays. I don’t expect there to be another city of tears in silksong, but if there is, you best believe I’m going to sit and watch and Listen.
The last half of sealed vessel literally made me tear up the first time I listened. It's one of the most beautiful pieces in modern cinematic history. I can't get enough of it
I love hollow knight because it gave me a safe space to explore my deep, sad emotions, as I was going through hell at the time. The somber world gave me a place where I could feel safely, quietly. It gave me a beautiful and enthralling world, curious and entertaining characters, and an emotional story for me to explore my emotions on my own, through the lens of a fictional world.
@@ChargedBonsai98 Things have improved a lot! Life still has its ups and downs, and the past cannot be undone, and should not be forgotten, but nonetheless I have improved very much. My fascination with the melancholic and the dreary in fiction remains strong as ever, though, as I find it to be a fantastic way, even now, to explore tough emotions. Thank you for the kind words, stranger on the internet! I hope your life as well is going well, and has improved from times past, even if the past wasn't so rocky for you.
I can't even begin to describe my reaction when I first entered the City of Tears and heard its music. Its a moment that sticks with me to this day and its my favorite song from the entire game aside from Reflection, as well as one of my favorite songs from any game ever. It's so beautiful and I genuinely love it so much.
The motif in soul sanctum is not the main motif, but the city of tears’ and continues in the resting grounds. What you described as the hopeful melody at the end of sealed vessel is in fact the motif of the king, which you can hear heavily in the white palace and it’s even buried in hornet (a subtle hint that she is a princess). The hopeful part at the end of the sealed vessel is the king’s motif played in unison with the hollow’s motif, (as heard in hollow knight, sealed vessel, and broken vessel) because it symbolizes the triumph accomplished by the combined effort of the knight (you) and hornet. The hollow motif melody never resolves in ANY of its iterations except for at the very end of the sealed vessel track - that’s the cathartic feeling! Also the only real instruments in the whole album are the piano, viola, and vocals. So the main theme, as well as the most badass parts of hornet, for example, are real There is one track on the dlc album which is entirely real instruments, and it’s the only one that doesn’t appear in the game. The sequel has two phenomenal tracks already released, which also use only real instruments.
God, Broken Vessel and Mantis Lords are so damn good. My two favorite fights in the game with my two favorite songs. I especially love how the Mantis Lords don’t ambush you, like most bosses, but rather wait for you to challenge them. Also, if you missed it or forgot about it, the Broken Vessel, the Hollow Knight (Sealed Vessel), and the Knight (player character) are all siblings. This is why there are motifs shared between the songs that focus on them. Well, on the former two, since the Knight doesn’t really have its own song(s).
I don’t think I’ve ever felt so invested and immersed in a game as I did with hollow knight, especially in terms of the music. Every time I listen to the music I can’t help but remember the memories of the specific areas or bosses fondly
That was really nice! I'll definitely check out Hollow Knight's DLC Soundtrack, too! You already listened to one of it's track in the Halloween livestream, iirc.
I love the City of tears track, the vocals being tied with Lady Marrissa who sings the same when you sit and listen to her. The silence when you Dreamnail her is very somber as well
So whenever I think of a good video game OST I like, I always search up your videos on that OST because you give such an amazing analysis and it just makes me feel relatable. I have been looking for a Hollow Knight OST reaction for a while now and since its finally here im really rejoicing lmao. Anyways, great stream, keep up the good work.
1:39:00 "Climbing all the way up" ?? How did you know? There is no way you haven't watch the boss fight.😮 Jokes aside, it's amaze me that you can deduce the whole boss run JUST from hearing the soundtrack. I genuinely didn't think it's possible. Mad respect @@MarcoMeatball
Ah! I wondered when you'd get around to Hollow Knight. Absolutely AMAZING ost. Both games. I STILL get chills and swells of emotion when I listen to it. It has so much association with the sadness and hope that the game portrays. There is almost no other game that delivers this much emotion.
The "percussion" in Nosk theme is definitely strings instruments being played col legno, not any kind of percussion instrument. I love how all of the vessel related themes, including Hornet, feature strings so heavily--even the vessel mimic does.
I love Hollow Knight for several reasons. It was how I discovered my love for exploration games, because there was always something to do that intrigued me. If I was stuck, I could just go somewhere else to continue. It also was the first 'difficult' game I completed, because everything, the soundtrack, the lore, the charming character designs and the fun boss fights, motivated me to keep going even if I was struggling with a hard boss. I adore the atmosphere and the calming vibes of many of the areas, their interconnectedness and so much more about the world. The thought that Hallownest is such a tiny world that seems insignificant for a human, but everything going on there is so important on a much smaller scale than we can imagine. Ugh... I just love everything about it and I can't wait for Silksong to come out, because I need a new game that can suck me into it's world like that. I haven't been able to experience that in a game for a long time now.
I absolutely love when you come in and sing with your wonderful deep voice with the melody. It makes me smile everytime and I start doing it with you 😄
Really fun video and interesting commentary about a game I cherish! ❤ If you do end up replaying the game (on stream or not), I would highly suggest looking into a brand new mod released that adds voiced lines for almost every character interaction. It adds so much to the game and was a huge collaboration from people who care greatly about the game. It's called: hallownest vocalized.
What makes me sad is that the White Lady theme in the official soundtrack isn't even the full theme, it's like only half of it. If you listen to it in game, you realize that there's a lot more to it, and it's GORGEOUS.
The effect Dirtmouth has seems like an audio equivalent to the usually-visual technique of implied narrative - the idea that an image isn't just the single narrow slice a viewer can actually see, but can imply events or locations outside of what is actually shown, such as a character looking out of the frame at something not actually drawn. It's a very small, quiet piece with few instruments, and it only *literally* depicts the small, quiet town of Dirtmouth, but the sense of loss it brings with that depiction *implies* the existence of the entire fallen kingdom, of which Dirtmouth is the last sad, tiny surviving remnant.
What a coincidence I've started playing Hollow Knight recently and was surprised by the game and ost And when I came to RUclips to see if there any of your videos about it... BOOM this stream, City of tears and smt... Vessel reaction Cool Thank you)
Soul sanctum is so cool! The way it ends up sounding super heavy with out any crazy guitars or anything like that is so cool! I don’t know why exactly but I always thought it would sound really cool if someone did a black metal cover of it.
I think two fun slightly more osts you could look at are OneShot and Phoenotopia: Awakening, those are two of my favorite games and their more somber tracks really elevate the experience for me
