Kann mich noch gut an die Formel 1 Übertragungen erinnern als Manfred noch fuhr. Standig gab es Probleme mit dem unzuverlässigen Material. Dank des BMW Motors ging der ATS nicht schlecht. In Zolder oder Zandvoort fuhr man sogar ganz vorne mit im Feld - bis der Wagen wieder ausfiel. "Winkelhock" ausgefallen hieß es dann immer bei den Übertragungen. Trotz dem schlechten Material hat sich Winkelhock mehr als achtbar geschlagen. 1985 brachte mit dem RAM March auch keine Wende. Der Wagen war zwar relativ zuverlässig, aber um Welten langsamer wieder der ATS. Leider kam es dann zum Unfall. Ewig Schade um den begabten Rennfahrer.

Ho avuto la fortuna di vederlo correre nel gp di germania nel 1982 e nel 1983 e a monza nel 1984 ero proprio sopra il suo box . Per me Manfred era il migliore della formula 1 . The Gustav Brunner designed ATS-BMW was a masterpiece. Manfred Winkelhock drove it the best way possible considering the team's limited resources. I always was his fan. A good man.
He did wonders with that ATS... In 1984 he drove I think a half dozen GPs WITH THE SAME CHASSIS, and still qualified for every race. Never bent it in either testing, practice, qualy, or race, because Gunther Schmidt couldn't afford to build new cars. He died the weekend I started racing.
It should never have taken so many senseless fatalities for ALL forms of motorsport to replace these idiotic concrete "safety" barriers with what we have today. This man never should have died. He should have walked away.
