Interestingly, I've learnt since making this video that Spyker were interested in getting Jos Verstappen (who hadn't raced in F1 since 2003) in the car for the Belgian Grand Prix, or at least for Friday practice there.
Imagine if Markus Winkelhock won the race we will hear the German and Dutch national anthem on the podium what an interesting combination would that be
It's moments like this that make sport great for me, the "every dog has his day" moment, the plucky underdog defying the odds with a piece of quick thinking. It's the F1 equivalent of Roy Essandoh, the lower league journeyman who joined Wycombe Wanderers when they were desperate for a striker and he scored one goal for them but that goal was the winner against Leicester City in the FA Cup and wrote him into football legend. There will be footballers and racing drivers who have much stronger careers than Winklehock and Essandoh but will be easily forgotten but these glorious five minutes of fame will give these guys cult hero status forever :)
Absolutely. I think it was in my Frentzen video when I mentioned those little moments like those you said above - they can be few and far between in sports typically dominated by the same faces over and over again. But when you do get a Winkelhock or someone do something like this, that makes you appreciate it all the more.
It surprised me how often Alexandre Prémat showed up in this. There's the Formula 3 Euro series, test driver role for Midland and the Tom Kristensen crash in Hockenheim. One note on the DTM cars though: Those were touring cars in name only, the silhouette cars used at that time being basically prototypes disguised as an Audi A4/Mercedes C-Class respectively (Edit: obviously still significantly different to an F1 car, but also significantly different to what people commonly expect a touring car to be)
I remember I was quite surprised he wasn't given more of a shot in F1 - 4th and 3rd in his two GP2 seasons, plus an A1GP champion! Good point on the DTM front. The only reason I dropped them into the 'touring car' category was that I do try and make this so that it's accessible for everyone; from racing novices to seasoned veterans like you and me!
@@TheMobileChicane very good point about keeping the videos accessible. To bad the dtm was and recently was so severely mismanaged since it’s a great series with some awesome tracks. I was too young and didn’t have access to European racing when dtm was at its craziest through the late 90’s and early to mid 2000’s. But I always removed driving some of those cars in grand turismo 3 and marveling at all the aero and their speed
I was sad at the time he didn't drive again for the rest of the season but I agree with you that him leading the race at Nurbergring wouldn't be so fondly remembered as what it is still to this day. When I do get to talk to pals this race always comes up for two reasons, one it's a fantastic race & two Markus Winklehock
If you're an American seeing inklehock sponsored by something called "superfund" is pretty funny. The US federal government runs something called that for the purposes of environmental remediation. Thus "superfund" here is associated with disastrous pollution. Glad to have you back. You're seriously the one of the best F1 RUclipsrs and people *will* find you. I started watching F1 in 2013 so I appreciate you covering the less well known but still fascinating aspects of the sport's past.W
It takes something special to hold onto a lead that comes at you out of absolutely nowhere. Think of Ocon last year. Sure, his gaining the lead had very little to do with his own performance, other than being good at dodging the debris. But the fact he held it together for the rest of the race and didn't crack under the pressure meant he absolutely deserved it when he came home to win. And obviously, props to the lord of the eyebrows for being a bro and holding up Hamilton.
And it was some almighty pressure at that! Sure, Sebastian Vettel a year away from retirement in an Aston Martin isn't the same as a peak Vettel in a Red Bull - but that was still heaps of experience and talent hounding Esteban throughout the race. And like you say, Esteban didn't crack!
I love this video. What a remarkable story (and quite the display of wet-weather driving skill). The moment when Markus looked up at the replay of the Kimi pass got me where I live, and his smile when he got out of the car will stay in my memory for a long time. There's something beautiful about the stories of drivers like Manfred Winkelhock. They may not ever stand on a podium, but their fans love them and cheer them on as though they're fighting for wins. I wonder how many of Manfred's fans had tears in their eyes watching Markus that day.
Back to the Winkelhock family history, while they hadn't made the biggest impact on the F1 stat sheet, that family has bred some of the greatest touring/sports car racers ever. A lot of fans only judge a driver off of their F1 stats; I'm not one of these people, because even though F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, it's not the "be all, end all" of motorsport. So, when I look at the Winkelhock family, I see "oh; brilliant touring car racing drivers," not "oh; random F1 drivers."
I genuinely wonder how his career might've turned out, had he made his racing debut a decade or so earlier He clearly must've had some great potential, to fight the likes Kubica and Rosberg despite having about 10 years worth of disadvantage in terms of when he's made his debut In my opinion, he could've developed into a very solid driver, comparable with his fellow countryman, Nick Heidfeld
I'd be inclined to agree, I think that's a fair analysis. Anyone who can take it to two F1 talents like that, with a significant disadvantage in development, has got something special about them.
I think a cool video idea would be Kevin Magnussen’s journey in F1. In podcasts and in his book he’s mentioned lots of things, his links to Force India for his first years in F1, his stint at Renault, his links to Toro Rosso and his link to Williams in 2021. Think most people don’t know about that
Great video as always, one of the few f1 stories that end on a high note. You could take a look at Scott speed there was defenetly no high notes in that ending
Thank you! I've considered Scott Speed for a video in the past as there's some interesting notes to his tale. A product of the Red Bull Driver Search to find and promote some American talent into F1, and then had to pause his career after suffering ulcerative colitis. And of course his time in F1 was pretty full on - scoring his first point in Australia, and then losing it afterwards as well as being fined for swearing at David Coulthard in the stewards room. Then the next year, an alleged altercation with Franz Tost post this race. There's some juicy gossip in that tale for sure!
I feel it was a pity that the race was able to get underway again after the red flag, because then Markus Winkelhock would have become the only F1 championship race winner to have the record of 100% wins to races competed in. The starting from the back of the grid with the worst car would have just added icing to the cake.
Ah but then, you could argue that surely Markus would've held onto the seat for a few more races after that. Regardless of money, if a guy wins your first race out of nowhere, you'd be mad to drop him!
This is a story that I did have good knowledge about before since I did get to watch some highlights of this race before but it was nice to also learn the extra details about Winkelhock himself since he did have a great career in motorsport especially after his F1 outing considering his success in endurance racing. His performance that day was down to a very good call on the tyres but it was great to see him use the knowledge of the track to make that inspired call as well as keeping the car on the track considering he never drove a F1 car in the wet before. I do wonder where he could have ended up if the race wasn't red flagged and his hydraulics didn't fail. I find Sakon Yamamoto more interesting after his racing career since he became a politician and one that shows the benefits of motorsport which was nice. Anyways, the F1 season is over and as it turns out, Max was very dominate this year considering his record number of wins but this new era of car did lead too much closer racing which did make the fights in the midfield very interesting. The end of the season did prove quite epic like Magnussen's pole, Russell's first win and Vettel going out with a bang and I am going to miss him a lot. Next season could prove interesting due to how close the top three teams ended up performance wise at the end of the season. Since this video was about a rookie, here is hoping that Sargeant will have a good rookie season with Williams as well as Williams climbing up the pecking order too. My channel has grown quite a bit too since I can also make community posts too which has allowed me interact with my friends in more ways which is really nice.
Yes, I only learned recently that Yamamoto was a politician now! As you might expect, I'm also hoping for a good 2023 for Williams and Sargeant - with Albon leading the way I'm hopeful for a climb into the midfield and more regular, and bigger, points finishes. Congratulation on the channel growth!
@@TheMobileChicane It was pretty cool to learn about too. I hope for the same since I do wonder what Albon can do with a better car since he did quite amazing last season despite having the slowest car on the grid. Latifi not so much unless we are talking Japan. Thank you.
