The great thing about instrumental music, is that when it is as good as it is here, you don't need lyrics to portray a message or story. These fine musicians give you the opportunity to create your own scenarios, draw your own understandings and relate the music to any situation you please. Doesn't get much better than that.
While we're on the subject of music and intelligence, there was a recent study done that was the subject of a Ted Talks. It was discovered that while listening to music "lit up" several areas of the brain at once (many more areas than most other activities, including other arts) it was actually the playing of musical instruments that threw the brain into complete overdrive. Furthermore the effects of prolonged, systematic practice directly enhanced the musicians ability to perform multiple everyday tasks. Memory, logic, hand-eye coordination, creativity (you get the point) were all significantly (and positively) affected by playing music! So while we could sit here all day and argue about which genre attracts/creates the most intelligent listeners, I would argue that you should shut the fuck up, get on your instrument, and make some fucking music! By the way this song is awesome.
@SASPython I really understand what you are saying. It happens alot that when I listen to music, some songs reminds me of a part of my life or even make me think about a scene of a movie. Sometimes it's just my own imagination. Music is awesome.
In my original comment, I was giving examples. Metal is generally fast-paced and complex. Rap is generally simple beats and simple lyrics. I know there's super-simple metal and stuff like Tech9 and other speed rappers who make rap complex. But the general stereotype is that metal is more complex.
The display of creativity is definitely more apparent in the genres you mention. On a surface level, artists in these genres are far more creative judging from the diversity between bands. But as we can only judge what we perceive we cannot fully know which genre's played by the most creative people: a lot of hidden talent & creativity may not be displayed within i.e. the death metal scene as it wouldn't fit in, but it doesn't mean they're less creative.
I would like to thing they play some progressions in the golden ration. they must be interesting in sacred geometry which is the building blocks for all thing in this universe.
@DoubleEdgedSword12 It's been a while since I went to a metal concert, so I got home with a signed LP from Obscura, 4 CDs from the bands and a Cynic t-shirt! :)
It's just that generally, there are more creative people in the prog\avant-garde metal department. It's not the amount of creativity in the genre, it's the amount of creative people in the genre.
@AmIEvile Y'know it's actually been tested that when you listen to metal and other fast paced music like this, it gives your brain a workout. So usually the people who like metal are the smarter ones and the people who like, for example, rap are less intelligent.
actually they are, since that is my field. That's why NOW they must include an interpretation, observation and conclusion that outlines their weaknesses. Peer reviewed journals must also disclose methodology and weaknesses. Few, ever claim any strengths...Most studies are funded by private sector aka big corporations that undermine studies ;-) that would be apparent to people who read more than the abstract. cheers.
@Iliketacos091 just so you know, there is plenty of rap/hip hop out there that is quite intelligent and sophisticated in its lyrics. Just gotta look for it. Now as far as the "hip hop" that the radio plays, I agree with your statement 100% lol
Music that excites you it's shown to give a cognitive processing boost for 15 minuets or so. Banging your fist on the table, if that's what excites you, will do the same thing.
@kmoj12345 just to let you know Gallows is one of my least favorite tracks from the album, i would check out Whales, The Levitated + Secret Earth, Alpenglow, Drifting Figures, Balkan, this isn't their best album but like somebody said earlier it's different but still a great album
well they say that learning to play music makes parts of your brain work more efficiently. so it seems possible that if you're truly dedicating you're attention to the music then maybe that would help you in the same way. although i guess thats not relevant to that argument anyway. just my 2 cents
Yeah ofcourse you're right, but I still don't the musical preference is going to make a whole lot of difference compared to going to school :D But yeah, make your kids listen to metal, make them play lot's of awesome video games(this should really make their IQ's go through the roof) and keep them motivated!
I can look it up, if ou REALLY need me to. Christianisaperson said that he saw something similar. The basic concept makes logical sense though. Metal is fast and complex and your brain has a hard time keeping up with it, so if you listen to it enough, you brain becomes more and more active in order to keep up. Genres like rap have in general have easily predictable drum patterns, basslines, etc so your brain doesn't have to work as hard to understand it.
@danevati My bad, I was asking if they only had one Guitar player, but they don't, lol. You said 4 people so I thought they only had one Guitar player.
@Iliketacos091 Also when it's off beat and syncopated songs like this that require technically challenging instrumentals in which the listener must appreciate the skill required to play them, your brain gets a workout from trying to understand the beat and shit like that
Also, they may also display their creativity/intellect in other fields besides music. It's easy to anticipate an intellectual standpoint from ie. prog rockers because of how they perform & write their songs. Other musicians may not be seen as equal in creativity (I'm especially thinking about death metal, since they're so different in appearance) because their music appears raw & brutal, their lyrics are simple, etc. Still, that's just their image so they can be real smart behind the scene.
@rage1331 I was just sharing a fact that I found interesting: metal can make you smarter because it takes more brainpower to catch all the fast rhythms and notes. I know plenty of smart people who listen to both metal and rap. I don't usually like rap, but there is some that I enjoy.
I think that if you take the amount of creative people in a genre and divide it by the amount of the people who play that genre, prog\experimental will have the highest rate. You gotta take into consideration that prog\avant-garde, in their base definition, are all about being unconventional (whether it's by the sounds you make or the structures you craft for your songs) thus -> more creativity.
I would appreciate it if you did. I have heard of studies being done where the IQ of people who regularly listen to Jazz and Classical music were higher than those who listened to Pop and Rap, but again, that could be heresy for all I know. I just like seeing the sources myself before I start believing, you know?
I do know that. I actually listen to and enjoy some rap groups. Hacktivist, Death Grips, Hopsin is decent. Those are the only ones off the top of my head, but I'm sure if I really looked I could find tons of good rap.
I actually know plenty of smart people who like simple music. Most of them don't have an aversion to complex music like metal, however it is not their first choice. I think it is possible to become more intelligent in later years of your life, I just think it is much harder than if you went to a good school and worked hard in grade school. I know my kids will be listening to metal though. Just in case lol :P So to answer your question, I have no idea which it is.
I see your point in the sense that progressive genres open up to more freedom of expression. In other genres, it seems to be a common belief that one must stick to certain types of riffs & themes,etc in order to stick to the genre. Thus some genres don't develop much & the artists appear as less creative. They may have lots of creative ideas, but find those ideas not suitable for their genre. I'm not sure I really disagree with you, I just don't feel 100% convinced that prog = more creative ppl.
Completely agree with you, and I'm not really into rap music... I just listen to some stuff like Blakalicious... but people who comment here seem to lack emotional intelligence... sorry for my english...
@Iliketacos091 how do you even go about testing that theory? im open ears to every genre of music, ranging from this, to techno, to folk, to rap. i dont like one more than any other, but rap can be pretty fast and very intelligent depending on if you listen to the main stream bullshit or some quality underground shit. its also pretty hard to keep a flow to the beat and not mess up
@AmIEvile Like, I just dont see a point in putting a dislike button on a Scale The Summit video, how do you dislike this, I can see it not being someones cup of tea, but voicing your distaste of it is just weird to me.
Well, as for me, I don't find it boring at all. Yeah, it might be a little different from the previous releases. But, as for a musician, BORING is to stick to just one sound. It would be like eating licorice for a year, and licorice was your favorite last year.
If you're saying 99% of scientific studies are nonsense, then no, you're obviously way off... Either way, it's not really very related to this video! :)
@grahamcrackerlvr4578 I make my breakfast listening to them, I make love listening to them, I make turds listening to them, I make Z's listening to them. Sometimes I listen to Scale the Summit, too.
You've missed the point entirely. It's less about genre and more about complexity. I was generalizing, because the metal that I listen to (mainly progressive) is very technical, whereas most mainstream rap is very basic. There are exceptions, of course.
@nakedmongoose123 I have no idea how they tested it. Maybe surveys? and yeah some rap is alright. but most of the "mainstream" stuff is absolute shit. i do realize it would be hard to keep a good flow, but that isn't related to intelligence, just musical/rhythmic talent. in short, i agree with you. my first comment was just an interesting fact i read somewhere.
The great thing about instrumental music, is that when it is as good as it is here, you don't need lyrics to portray a message or story. Preach it brother! \m/
Seeing them Tuesday in Chico with Protest the Hero. Mind will be blown.
These Guys are truely great!!!!

this song is called "The Gallows", the album's name is "The Collective"
thank you for uploading it though!
@SASPython I really understand what you are saying. It happens alot that when I listen to music, some songs reminds me of a part of my life or even make me think about a scene of a movie. Sometimes it's just my own imagination. Music is awesome.
Animals as Leaders and Scale the Summit need to tour together
@Dishstony I'm gonna be seein em wednesday too, should be a good show.
My favorite one.
Hopefully, I'll see them tonite with Cynic and Obscura! Just heard them for the first time... I like!
@ddustbuster agree I NEED TO SEE THEM B4 I GET OLD!
Rap is very fast paced and a very intelligent music. Don't judge by genres, judge by music
this band is playing at my band's practice space on november 21....my band is called brutal acclivty......god im fuckn stoked
In my original comment, I was giving examples. Metal is generally fast-paced and complex. Rap is generally simple beats and simple lyrics. I know there's super-simple metal and stuff like Tech9 and other speed rappers who make rap complex. But the general stereotype is that metal is more complex.

Damn right!

Well, what can I say.. this is good.
I would like to thing they play some progressions in the golden ration. they must be interesting in sacred geometry which is the building blocks for all thing in this universe.
@IcarusCinematics fuck yeah man i know what you mean man, ive been listening to both of those albums non stop, soul crushing shit.
@DoubleEdgedSword12 It's been a while since I went to a metal concert, so I got home with a signed LP from Obscura, 4 CDs from the bands and a Cynic t-shirt! :)
@SASPython It's like comics vs. novels. Finally, some people get that vocals aren't needed.
It's just that generally, there are more creative people in the prog\avant-garde metal department. It's not the amount of creativity in the genre, it's the amount of creative people in the genre.

saw them play this song live..... i don't understand how they can play this with only 4 people?!
actually they are, since that is my field. That's why NOW they must include an interpretation, observation and conclusion that outlines their weaknesses. Peer reviewed journals must also disclose methodology and weaknesses. @IcarusCinematics got any favourites off weightless?
When are they going to come out with a CD?
@tdoro89 but then the bad ass ants with wings killing it to death in mid air?
Indeed, in APA format please.
Immortal Technique.

masterpiece

@ibtrey13 WHY...THEY BOTH ROCK
@Iliketacos091
there is a lot of thought process and lyrical genius behind rap as well.
Tyler the Creator --- Goblin album.
I can look it up, if ou REALLY need me to. Christianisaperson said that he saw something similar. The basic concept makes logical sense though. @Iliketacos091 - you have a link to this study?
@nateboutcher I wouldn't call Tyler a lyrical genius, but I agree with your overall point.
@rage1331 I was just sharing a fact that I found interesting: metal can make you smarter because it takes more brainpower to catch all the fast rhythms and notes. I know plenty of smart people who listen to both metal and rap. I don't usually like rap, but there is some that I enjoy.
@Iliketacos091 But what about Cynic's new EP?
I think that if you take the amount of creative people in a genre and divide it by the amount of the people who play that genre, prog\experimental will have the highest rate. God, I can't decide if I want to buy this album or wait for AAL's Weightless to come out and get that instead. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
@ChapelofSuicide
watch?v=HG5raDMRZa4
All their stuff is on their fb page too.
Haha I like that, "I'm a fan of complex music, I'm not a fan of BS though."
I would appreciate it if you did. I have heard of studies being done where the IQ of people who regularly listen to Jazz and Classical music were higher than those who listened to Pop and Rap, but again, that could be heresy for all I know. it's actually the other way around. You are switching up cause and effect
This. I am very skeptical about these "tests" that @Iliketacos091 claims have been done lol.
@Lewislpalm If you mean Math Rock/Mathcore, then no, this is prog. What your thinking of is more like The Dillenger Escape plan.
Just in case lol :P

@danevati Only one Guitar player?
Completely agree with you, and I'm not really into rap music... I just listen to some stuff like Blakalicious... but people who comment here seem to lack emotional intelligence... sorry for my english...
Bands/songs like this make me wonder why vocals are even necessary.
@Coexistentialism Seeing them Wednesday with PTH. See you on the other side! (implying that both of our minds will be sufficiently blown)
*instant replay*
@Iliketacos091 how do you even go about testing that theory?
im open ears to every genre of music, ranging from this, to techno, to folk, to rap.
i dont like one more than any other, but rap can be pretty fast and very intelligent depending on if you listen to the main stream bullshit or some quality underground shit. its also pretty hard to keep a flow to the beat and not mess up
@NipplesMagee Haha well how could it sound this good with only ONE guitar player? :P
Rap can be amazing lyrically speaking, it's ùma
Why 6 dislikes? this is good music.
lol at people actually equating good taste with intelligence
so since i listen to splittercore i should be up there with einstein
@VelaToNorma7 What amazing? Yes I agree.
@AmIEvile Like, I just dont see a point in putting a dislike button on a Scale The Summit video, how do you dislike this, I can see it not being someones cup of tea, but voicing your distaste of it is just weird to me.
@FLDisaster nope. i read it a while ago, forgot where.
AAL ftw
Well, as for me, I don't find it boring at all. Yeah, it might be a little different from the previous releases. But, as for a musician, BORING is to stick to just one sound. It would be like eating licorice for a year, and licorice was your favorite last year.
As soon as a that caption at the bottom came up, I immediately tried to close it... :P
@Dualhammers go on google and find the article yourself
@AmIEvile The other two missed the like button.
hell fuckin yes!
If you're saying 99% of scientific studies are nonsense, then no, you're obviously way off... Either way, it's not really very related to this video! :)
@rjgrand666 IT WAS ABSOFKINMAZING
@grahamcrackerlvr4578 I make my breakfast listening to them, I make love listening to them, I make turds listening to them, I make Z's listening to them. Sometimes I listen to Scale the Summit, too.
Good for you. Would you like a cookie?
Seven strings power
what is good taste though?
You've missed the point entirely. It's less about genre and more about complexity. I was generalizing, because the metal that I listen to (mainly progressive) is very technical, whereas most mainstream rap is very basic. There are exceptions, of course.
swear this is/was called gallows?
@Iliketacos091 Citation needed
Check out this band CHON. It's instrumental prog metal. Crazy shit.
@Iliketacos091 it all depends on the artist and song, listen to some tech nine.

@TheZohaun exactly.
@S1ghtl3ssK1ll yesssssssssssssssssssssss!!
@im7onthe7th more like "no description possible"
@SASPython so true
@Iliketacos091 Maybe if you break the music down in your mind
