This is very helpful. I'm going to do more landscape work and I bought this lens to work with the Leica SL2. I was about to buy the 150mm front filter kit. The only disadvantage is changing the filters require me to remove the lens from the camera.
It's the a7S2 (made in like 2017) which was TERRIBLE at Auto Focus and it did not have a Flip Screen so I couldn't tell what was going on back then!! lol!!
Thank you for this vid! Appreciated! Wow! All that gear and your cam is hunting focus the whole time! Fussy damn things. Later in the video, it was fixed...how? what did ya do to fix that?
Haha, that was filmed on an old a7S2! Terrible Auto Focus!! I switched to an a7R3 in Dec 2020, then to a Sony FX3 Feb 2021. I still have all 3 cameras but only use a7S2 for overhead MANUAL focus shots now.
I've used the GM a bunch. And yes, in many ways it is better. Like the Filter threads for One! Although, It cost double the price when I got the 14-24mm, but Sony should be making smaller, faster, Mark 2 of the 16-35mm very soon (seems how they just updated the 24-70 and 70-200mm)
I enjoy your video it’s my first time catching you good job. I am trying to justify buy this sigma 14-24 sense I all ready have 3 primes to cover this range but I think I would enjoy all in one lens and lose a little F stock
I still carry and use this lens on a weekly basis, but keep in mind, the rear ND's are fragile and take a moment to swap out, so they aren't ideal for running and gunning and lots of changing lighting conditions (like a variable ND)... but if you have the time, and a safe spot to swap rear filters out without getting dust on your sensor, then these are great!!!
I don't think that lens has a built in Filter Holder in the back of it. Only this Sigma 14-24mm and the Sony 12-24mm has the Holder. But the Sony is a different shape filter
No, as far as I've seen, only the Sony 14mm, and 12-24mm have a similar Rear ND filter system like this. Different shaped filters though with a little tray.
As a wedding filmmaker, I wonder if it would be better to get a lense that can use nd filters. What are yoyr thoughts as a fellow videographer? I would really love the unusually wide perspective shots you can get but not sure if the front element is a dealbreakrr
Hi Shane. I shoot Disney Fairy Tale Weddings all the time, and I usually have the Sigma 24-70mm on my FX3. I use this 14-24mm whenever I'm close to Cinderella's castle and need to see the whole thing (even while literally standing 15 feet away from the entrance). And I like it for Interior shots to make the venue space look bigger. Or Receptions while everyone is dancing. Sometimes on the Exit shot at the end of the wedding too. I wish it had the ability to use VND, but I've become a Pro at switching the Rear ND Filters in seconds. You get used to it. I just bought the Tilta Mirage VND Matte Box and I'm trying to find a good way to mount that on the 14-24mm I'll post a video when I get it figured out.
Thank you! Yes, that was shot on the a7S2, which has notoriously bad Contrast Based auto focus (recently sold that camera). This year I picked up an a7R3 and FX3 which are worlds apart, but they cover everything I need for Photo and Video now.
@@WaltervanDusen by the way, I made a full video on my channel, shot on the 14-24mm and FX3 if you want to see the Eye Auto Focus and everythingcalled something like "FX3 for Vlogging"
@@RayValencia Yeah, that’s what I figured. But I had hopes some clamp might’ve existed to mount it to the front by friction. I’m really gonna miss using my circular Mist filters when I don’t wanna go through all the trouble of mounting rails and a matte box, but I decided to order the lens anyways. Your video was very helpful, thank you!
@@bradleykussy Basically, I don’t. I found the hassle of using this lens with stuff like mist filters to not really be worth it. I mainly use it as a photo lens, and when I do use it for video, I just use it as-is with the rear ND filters.
The lens is great. It's not the lens focusing issues, that's the A7SII contrast-based auto focus. I could review the 14-24mm with the a7R3 if anyone is interested?
@@RayValencia yea I would love, however I shoot with a7iii. I love the lightness of tamron and I also have 28-75mm tamron which I love. Also between these lenses who has got closer focus? I like the wide range of Sigma though.
Great review. It's really annoying that they didn't include an ND32, as so perfectly demonstrated in your video. So often in typical "bright day" conditions the ND16 isn't enough and the ND64 is way too much if you want maximum bokeh. Why they don't include a ND32 but do include a ND1000 is completely beyond me. I've never had to use one of those. Is there a big demographic of people making videos on the surface of the sun or what?!? Also, that autofocus in the A7sii was an absolute shocker! I'm glad you got rid of that camera, it would have driven me crazy!
Haha, I agree. You're right! Probably had Photo in mind. Personally, I've never used the ND1000 on a video shoot; only for an occasional long exposure photo. Yes, the a7SII was on the old rusty contrast-based AF. The FX3 has me super spoiled, with Eye AF for video. The 14-24mm has amazing AF responsiveness on this camera.
That clip has a LUT on it, but I don't remember it having that yellowish-orange tint on my monitor or in Premiere. Either my monitor needs to be calibrated, or my colors changed on export/upload. Thanks for finding that.
Aha, I figured out what I did there. I accidentally dragged the LUT across that standard clip because my A-Cam had the Picture Profile OFF, but my B-Camera was shooting in S-LOG2 PP7. It's over-saturated.
lol, you saw what camera I was using 2+ years ago when I made this? a7S2 awful autofocus. You should see how this lens performs on my FX6 and FX3. AMAZING
I don't need to see the video but I comment in this video to tell you that I really really appreciate your works and never stop creating videos. ❤️
Thanks Adnan! I really appreciate you taking the time to write me.
Thank you for this review! I'm about to take my set out to test and review today so this was super helpful!
Do they make CP filters for it?
I just got mine and look forward to trying them out, thanks.
Enjoy! I've been having fun with the ND3.0, 10 stop filter doing Long Exposure shots. So cool what you can do, especially with water.

Great video. I just got my rear nd filters in today same setup
cool are they glass? or resin
I use these regularly as I mainly do long exposure, clear and no color cast worth it
Hey Sean. Thanks. I know this video is 3+ years old, but I am STILL using these filters in 2023, just like you. They work great.
Is there one for the sigma 18 - 35
Hi!! No, this was lens design was created after that lens, and this one is full frame, not APSC. More room for filters
Hey i realize the lens is hunting alot? Is it the sigma lens or… just wide angle issues?

Do you think and cost aside the Sony 16-35 gm would be better in some ways over this 14-24 ?

Does it work for the Sigma 20mm 1.4?

Unfortunately impossible to take the time screws out of the lens to add the adapter.
There's no adapter or screws required. This Sigma DG DN Art lens comes with the filter holder built in.

no, there is no rear holder. But the front is an 82mm
So how would one mount a mattebox to this thing without using rails?
When going that route, I use rails and a Tilta Mirage Matte box for this lens. No other way, with there being no filter threads on this lens.

Usually, you'd have to rotate a CPL filter to get polarization. I'm not sure if that's possible for this lens setup.
