  • In this week's portrait painting video we are going to keep it classical. We will start off with a charcoal drawing directly onto our canvas, go over that with pastel pencil, and then create an underpainting. This is a very relaxing way of working, and it's also an "old master" style approach. Now, I'm not trying to perfectly copy the photograph, nor am I claiming that any old master actually painted like this. This is purely aimed at guiding you through an "old master" inspired painting demonstration.

Thank you for the demonstration. Your videos keep getting better in terms of production. The lighting was good in this one. The source picture was also well lit. Can't wait for part 2!

By the way.....don’t be afraid to make noise with your charcoal. I love that sound. For me, it is the sound of creation. So please go ahead, make noise...

I am not an oil painter or Acrylic but watercolour. Really appreciated your real time tutorial. Loved the way the underpainting came together.

I’m a painter but I’ve had a block for the last few months, haven’t been able to create anything worth while. Saw this vid and it inspired me to go out and buy some new stuff and paint again. Thank you 🙏

I love that you are showing the classical grisaille method. I should think it would be easier to do the grisaille from a black and white photo and the glazing from the color photo.

53:38 looks like faye dunaway lol. Excellent work my friend.
    This was my exact technique.
I use to work this way because I came from a drawing background and learned to apply the paint with a dead color under painting and glaze over it. Then I started to learn other techniques by the old masters . I love painting for that reason , there is so much to learn and try to master , so many approaches and many ways to layer the paint. I only paint in oil for this reason.
Figurative realism is what I love and I see many ways to render light and shadow on the form. Being a draftsman I had to really concentrate on color theory and the way 2 colors side by side make a line , instead of drawing a line with the brush. I have everything I need now in methods and techniques, like how the lit edge of the form is sharp and the shadow side is soft , and how to round the form with just color. And how to paint with pieces of color like a puzzle without blending. This video is nostalgic for me because it's my main technique. Many thx for having a great love for the work and sharing notes. ⚡
And watching this makes me realize that I need new brushes , especially pencil sized ones and 2 medium cat tongues.

Amazing how you flatter the subject . Your stylized reproductions
are brilliant , and it is the signature of great artist. This is important and is the personal interpretation people look for in a portrait artist. I've done photo realistic portraits , but I prefer doing figure compositions. But yeah I see the flattery there because I do it as well , but I like your more. 🙂👍

I still come back to this video. I gotta try that pastel pencil and then start with the underpainting. Usually I pencil then go over my drawing with toned gesso. Then start the underpainting. Thanks man

Hm..I used similar axies/guidelines on the face when I used to draw manga. This video is actually helpful now that I'm into digital art. I think that if I use a similar blocking technique to this, I can make more realistic (less cartoony) human figures.

Wonderful video!! I love your videos !! I have a question. Whenever tried to make simple lines as you did (around) 8min, I always find my lines sit on wrong places. So people in my portraits looks totally different from my reference photo. How did you train your eyes? (I tried to copy some bargue drawing, will it be helpful?)

WOW! What dreadfull taste! This does not look at all like the work of anyone who could reasonably be called an "old master". It looks more like some of the rubbish a painter like Tretchikoff might have churned out.
