Brian, useful info, and great to see an older video of you and family! You're still providing great Diy RV how to going into 2024. A long time subscriber
+2nd Home Tx My generator does not have an oil filter. As for the air filter, I switch it out every other time I change my oil. I just don't use my generator that much so the air filter stays pretty clean.
Awesome thanks for info. I guess mine does not have oil filter either. thanks again for video, my local RV dealership wants $70+ dollars to change my generator oil. I call BS on that!!
Thanks so much, you made the whole process so easy to follow to DIY. Now Motorhome owners like myself will save time and pricey charge some of the RV shops will would charge.
Excellent video overall. I have wondered how those ENCLOSED generators get oil changes, and now I know. One thing to understand however, is that quality oil does not deteriorate by itself in 12-months. If only a few hours of use is put on an engine, it is not necessary to change it every 12-months. That is a direct quote from a long time friend who worked at the MIT Sloan Automotive Laboratory.
I have wondered about this as I put very few hours on my RV propane generator. It seems like such a waste to change the oil every 12 months for a few hours of use. How often should you change the oil when the generator gets little use?
Amsoil is the best Synthetics for the onan We have it in all our cars and trucks since 1970. Runs cooler and no breakdown of multi viscosity improvers good for every Application.
Thanks for this. I did it on my QG 4000 this morning. I think that's the same model as the MicroQuiet. They changed the name. A note for anyone with the QG 4000 is that the drain plug needs a 12 mm socket, not 9/16 in. I guess the newer models are metric. I also did the fuel filter, air filter and spark plug with a maintenance kit I bought on Amazon. The fuel filter needs a 9/16 in long reach socket.
Although SAE-30 is good, 10W-40 or 50 is better for desert areas or hot climates in general. It is not necessary to warm up the generator before you drain the old oil, especially if it hasn't run for a while. Do not hold the stop button down. Simply push it and immediately release or you risk flooding the engine and leaving fuel in the carburetor. The electronic shutoff mechanism is designed to burn off any remaining fuel in order to empty the carburetor. Remember, the stop button is also the primer.

This seems simple enough for this almost 60 year old lady. I’m not sure if this oil is okay for my QG 3600 LP and I can’t find the information in my owners manual. Great video! Thank you!
Thanks very much, Tito. I was trying to find the dipstik not realizing it was built into the oil hole cap. I knew you'd show me. Many thanks for all your great videos! Always informative, helpful and entertaining!
Thank you Tito! Did my first ever oil change on our 3600 Onan all thanks to your helpful video. You're videos are so informative and helpful and very much appreciated! Thanks again.
Tito post's a video on how to change generator oil then shows you how NOT TO CHECK OIL LEVEL. When checking oil level you don't screw dipstick in. Level is checked by inserting dipstick until it touches top of fill tube, then withdraw, check level on stick, TITO!
Most smaller generators do not have oil filters. I think the reason is hours. Small generators that they sell with wheel kits are changed at 20 hours. Larger generators 100 hours. The big generators that power buildings can go weeks but they have filters. In short change your oil when it is time to prevent damage. The other problem is to be sure to turn on lights or whatever you run to make the engine speed up. It's like a car that just sits at idle all day. It needs to run on the highway now and then. The generator is the same it needs to work or you could have problems after time.
Thank you. When I bought my new RV, I didn't get any manuals or books on it. Your video was helpful. I was wondering if there's an oil filter that would need replacing, like on a car engine?
We were gifted a Champion 3500 but they keep fuel in it for 2 years. We haven't tried to start it and we were wondering what you recommend we should do to bring it to proper working order. Drain the fuel? How? Change the fuel filter? Oil Change? Oil Filter? Any & all the tips, instructions & advise would be extremely helpful. Thank You Lou💚
One thing I always do is check the oil BEFORE I drain it. That way if it begins using oil you will know to check it more often, so it doesn't run low and grenade.

Lots of people are claiming that 1.6 qt.s and the full mark on the dipstick is over filling and causes a shut down after 20, 30 or more minutes of running time. I can't explain it, but thats the claim.
@@RVwithTito My manual says this for my Onan QG 4000 EVAP: " In order to get the correct oil level reading, the dipstick must be screwed in completely on all models with a screw-type dipstick, except for the Onan RV QG 2800/2500 model; it sits on top of the fill tube. Anyone notice that the brass drain plug doesn't have a gasket? I've lost some oil in the past, replace with a 1/2" drain plug - with gasket. I was going to get a drain plug gasket kit, but the original brass plug is round and can't fit a gasket, the new plug is fat at the threads end and make a tight seal with the engine.

The drain plug gasket is all you need. For gods sake don't do this. I have seen poorly applied sealant get cooked to a cylinder wall and score the piston and ruin the cylinder.

Not this model. The larger Onan gens do.

"Load on it" means to increase the "electrical load", making the generator produce more amps. You can do so by running your microwave or the AC unit.
