    I come from a computing background and have come to R after using programs like tableau. R is such a powerful tool from a programming perspective people need to know to use it from the start and NOT get dragged into expensive click n drag tools. The ability to use the same tool to create your reports as the one you used to get the findings is one of the strong points. The name R should be seen as meaning Reproducible so everyone can reproduce what you do so they can check your findings! (I am starting to teach it alongside Python next year at a UK uni).

    To be clear, one great thing about SPSS is that you can write code, which captures all of the benefits of sharing and reproducibility you expressed, but you also have the option of a graphic user interface. If you use the latter, what you do gets written as code by the software, so you can still share and reproduce it. All of that said, I'm learning R, because it's open-source and in high-demand among potential employers. From all of the great things I've heard, I expect to be a true convert soon.

    I came from a edX MOOC by Harvard X about R. I literally got bored watching the professor reading lines from his book by reading from a TelePrompter. It is not engaging at all. I said to myself that i might come to RUclips and see what other non-professor labeled people are teaching about r. The first video i watched was yours. Omg. You made me want to learn r passionately. You are not reading but telling with passion. You demonstrate directly from the workplace with ide and coding lines. You start with very easy examples so that learners can focus on the skill rather than understanding the task. Brilliant. And i should not forget the informal language that you use, which is much more engaging and easy to understand. And your humor, of course. Just love it.

    I wish I had this when I was taking econometrics in the 1990's. R kicks so much ass. The data wrangling you can do with dplyr (and tidyverse in general) is mind blowing.

    • @faustin289
      @faustin289 3 года назад

      To be fair, I really don't see much added value of dplyr over SQL. Given that I pull my data from a DBMS, I prefer doing much of the wrangling using SQL before importing into R

    • @wbdill
      @wbdill 3 года назад

      @@faustin289 I find dplyer to be much more versatile for data wrangling than SQL - and I've been using SQL since version 6.5.

    Attending a seminar tomorrow on R coming from an SPSS background in medical research. I'm definitely scared of the programming aspect of it. Some of the analyses we're running are quite complex and the point and click system really do serve its purpose, especially in the older generation of scientists.
    Boiling down to it, R vs SPSS seems to be an upcoming UI battle such as the OS one with Windows vs Linux. One being more user friendly, and the other open source and more versatile

    • @factChecker01
      @factChecker01 Год назад

      The more complex the analysis is, the more benefit you get from a program. It records and documents exactly what was done and makes the more complex and treacherous processes more reliable. Furthermore, suppose you spot a mistake in one step of a very long process. You can correct that mistake and rerun the entire program. If you try that with a point and click approach with very many steps, there is a great likelihood that one of your "click-steps" will be wrong. We are only human, but a computer running a program is not human.
      PS. I would be very surprised if there were no programming options for SPSS, SAS, etc. They all started as programmable languages on mainframe IBM computers before the introduction of PCs.

    Where R wins is the graphics options and the availability of cutting edge methods that are usually developed for R as it is free.

    R has proved to be quite scary for me. I started a program with a top 40 university here in the states, and there is absolutely no support. I need help. I am spending 30 - 40 hours a week looking for answers in stack overflow, and I'm lost, like a child wandering alone in a mall. I need so much help-- these are the best videos I've found.

    As a researcher in the public health field I usually use Excel and also SPSS to perform my data analysis. But some years ago my friend introduced me to R functionalities an I loved. R is amazing. I consider myself an R beginner and I found yours videos fantastisc. Thanks for share.
