Technically he has done movie reviews in the past, when his thatistheplan channel was still up, he talked about the Straight Outta Compton movie and Star Wars The Force Awakens.
The 3rd act “play” sequence was, I think, the most important part of the film. It provides the closest approximation of how Beau actually thinks without the anxiety and the trauma of his conscious mind we see in the rest of the film. It’s essentially a dream within one 3 hour nightmare. And without it, as Melon said, the movie would be SO dark and traumatic and extreme that it would not be tolerable. It’s a brief moment of beauty in what is otherwise a hell scape.
I thought it was decent (it had the funniest line of the movie, in my opinion), but the part that confused me was the character that interrupts/disrupts it, I thought, was done for the rest of the movie, based on what I saw. I don’t know if that’s a plot hole, or I missed something, but that was my main gripe with it.
SPOILER (for anyone who hasn’t seen it) - OK, maybe “disrupt” was the better word here, but doesn’t Jeeves come in and shoot up the traveling theater, only to fall on his gun and get shot multiple times? So how did he show back up at the end in the attic with the “you-know-what?” Again, maybe I remembered it incorrectly, but if not that was the part I was talking about.
The play sequence is my favorite bit of the film for this reason, as it also shows us the person Beau could’ve been and the things that he wanted out of life. Figuring out that he did want a normal life and a family is a very upsetting revelation as we know he is far past his prime to get those things, but still watching him get wrapped up in this fantasy just to lose it all is just another hardship Beau must face in a life with profound lows
I kept going "oh now this is going to happen" and always something completely, absolutely unpredictable happened, it's a long movie, but it didn't feel that long, at any point.
It wasn't super surprising to me that some people would really dislike this movie, but it was really surprising that there aren't more people with this take about what is so good about it. I loved it and the anxiety fever dream aesthetic was refreshingly raw and authentic.
I really liked it a lot, but I would’ve liked it more if it were shorter honestly. It’s been annoying to already deal with most films becoming 2 hours on average these days. 3 hours with a lot of the film being kind of abstract and heavily open to interpretation more so than his previous works is a hard sell for film nerds too, im sure. Still saw it in theaters and liked it though
I get that length can be a problem for some, but once it hits streaming that won’t really be an issue. I loved it, the 3 hours flew by, if a movie is good and engaging I don’t care how long it is.
Yeah that’s cool for like maybe an hour or two but a bitch was tired as FUCK. If you’re praying for a movie to be over imo that makes it a bad movie. The themes aren’t strong enough to sustain it’s insane runtime
YESSSSS omg i loved it and had a ride of a lifetime watching. so many people asked me if i recommend it and I'm like...........? maybe.......? that’s a loaded question lmfao

This is an incredible achievement melon. Watching a movie is a hard thing to do but there's no surprise that you were capable of achieving such a feat.

There is something really fascinating about the theatre troupe thing to me, I feel like it functions as a key to understanding the movie. Aster has described the movie as a "Picaresque" and has said that he was inspired by early literature that follows on that structure. The wandering theatre troupe isn't a common movie trope, but it is a common literature trope. Usually the main character wanders into the theatre troupe and the theatre troupe acts a s a sort of catalyst for emotional development for the main character, specifically opening the character up emotionally. I don't fully know what it means, but the fact that it's used all the time in a particular type of literary genre means that we are supposed to at least use that context somehow.
Big fan of Aster's work so I went to see this the week it came out, I was the only person in the whole theater and it was one of the craziest film experiences I've ever had. All alone in the dark with all that crazy shit happening on screen was simultaneously insanely fun and also horrifying, especially with how close to home a lot of it hit.
I’m so glad you saw this movie and decided to share what you think! I absolutely adored Beau Is Afraid and found it to be such a captivatingly overwhelming experience! It’s honestly my favorite film from Ari Aster so far. Everything from the themes, to the imagery, the performances, and the mind-bending, absurd, and super layered screenplay was just so engaging that I was genuinely never bothered by the 3 hour runtime
Thank you for this!! Beau Is Afraid is one of the most profound experiences I’ve had with art in a long time, easily the best movie I’ve seen this decade so far.
I'm so glad you spoke about this film. I found this to be a masterpiece on the corruption narcissism can have on a person's life, as well as a non flinching display of a life that has been waisted. I found it to be so god damn sad by the end, even though the final scene is so absolutely over the top and out there - I still couldn't help but feel such an immense pain for this character. I've seen people become entangled by the narcissism of others, and the end plays this out in full swing... tragic. I also love the third sequence, the blending of film, theater, music, and poetry. It's an absolutely beautiful piece of art in its own right and acts as the perfect 'eye of the duck' scene for the film. Truly fantastic stuff.
I agree so much with everything you said. Even though is a lengthy and often times exhausting film i wouldn't take away any part of it because i think every part plays a role in putting the viewer inside the anxiety-ridden mind of Beau and also it's all such a mind-bending, hilarious, colorful, sinister and terrifying experience that it wouldn't be complete without all the batshit crazy insane detours and twists of the narrative. Truly a one of a kind movie going experience and a film that i'm glad exists even if it wasn't a box office success at all. Also, Fantano letterboxd when??
Been trying for a month to see this film, but it was pulled from theaters here after only a few days because it was such a box office bomb. So it’s almost impossible to see right now. I love Ari so I’m chomping at the bit. I hope it hits streamers soon.
I drove an hour to find a theater playing it, it was worth it. Can’t wait to show it to my friends, they’ll probably hate it and that’ll make me love it even more
I got super lucky and was able to see it on a Monday that worked out for my schedule. There wasn’t a lot of people in the theater, and my good buddy (who likes Aster’s films) didn’t even know it was out. I think they kinda flopped with the marketing on this one because, outside of RUclips ads, I don’t think people saw trailers for this movie.
thanks for recing this anthony, as someone who has had severe anxiety, ocd, and depression for over a decade, i am extremely intrigued by this and will get my family to watch it with me.
Spoilers below: The ending of this film is such a fuck you to the audience. Beau screams out to a crowd for help in a colosseum-like center, but when you realize it, the final shot of the film shows the opposite side of the colosseum, which when you think about it, wraps around and makes us the other side of the colosseum. We watch this man suffer for our entertainment and then fail to answer his call for help and just get up and leave as we also see on screen as the credits roll.
I assume that whenever a movie starts playing in the theater, Anthony screams a little at the realization that he is about to experience an audiovisual medium.
I patiently waited for this since it was announced as his next film and even read the original script and still wasn’t prepared for what I saw. Whether it’s your cup of tea or you hated it, this is what cinema is about. I’ve rewatched it 3 times since it was released on demand and still have so much digesting to do. Very rarely do we get something like this nowadays with many movies feeling like redundant cash grabs that aim to appeal to the masses. It was recently announced that Ari’s next film will probably be a western noir dark comedy, I’m beyond thankful there’s people like him bringing originality back to world of cinema.
God I loved this movie, I saw it twice in the theater and both times I was one of only 2 people there. The first time I saw it I was just speechless and thought about it all the way home
A24 knew this wouldn't perform commercially but that tradeoff to keep Aster in house and making more commercially viable stuff is better for them in the long run.
I agree with you 100-100-100 percent! I’m really glad you see the beauty of this film. I think it deserve a lot of praise for what it’s able to achieve and honestly I think it’s my favorite film he’s ever made
I loved it! It was extremely uncomfortable, it made me laugh, and it made me cry. Few movies are able to take you to such extremes of emotions and I think it’s achieved something new and refreshing in the risks it took. Whenever the play scene happened I could not believe it was really happening, especially for as long as it did
This is easily the best movie of the year so far, I'm glad that even if Fantano doesn't watch many he at least has some good taste when he does watch one
i disagree. there's been pretty good bangers hidden lately. you got beef (pretty popular), are you there god? it's me, margaret, dogleg, past lives. beau's quality is far from ari's best for me. even if it was rated as the best movie so far, it wouldn't last long. zone of interest, killers of the flower moon, oppenheimer are coming. they're pretty set to take over 2023
Seeing a fantano full movie review (albeit spoiler-free) was definitely unexpected. And while we're here i would have never guessed you would be a fan of this film. This is awesome
just watched the movie yesterday loved every minute of its 2:59 run time one of my biggest regrets of 2023 is allowing myself to be talked out of seeing it in the theater would have loved to have EXPERIENCED it in a theater with the visuals audio and other people in the darkl
did he literally just make up that he was in a long a** movie just to act like he was not listening to the new taylor swift midnights til dawn edition for 3 hours straight?
I like how melon have a purple light thing going on, if you take a look into his channel, I think he deliberately "make scenes", like when he reiviews album he always sits next to the shelf, on fantano channel he stand in the room, he is essentially creating iconic scenes, which is pretty much his "branding", which I believe is crucial to his success
Well this review is unexpected. The dark comedy of the first 30 minutes works really well IMO but it went downhill as soon as Beau went into the forest.
@@dewot1256 I know, I was just referring to how much I loved the first 30 minutes. I thought the section with Nathan Lane afterwards was just decent. The forest scene was overly long and felt completely self indulgent
This movie feels like those creepy dreams/nightmares that you wake up from and cant remember all the details and it doesnt really make sense. It was like that, but NONSTOP
Love this film. Like beau says during the stage play scene "this is my story!". Notice the water theme throughout the movie, Beau needs water with his meds or could die, his mom's name is Wasserman and lives in Wasserton (wasser is German for water).
Im about an hour into the movie and I am exhausted. I checked to see how much longer the movie is and it literally caused me anxiety to know there was still 2 hours of this madness. This truly is one of the most self endulging movies I have ever seen.
interesting point abt beau is that his mom's monologue about him not being able to decide for himself is a nod to the viewers themselves. beau is our perspective throughout the film and i can't help but feel like the mom's monologue is ari aster telling us to decide for ourselves what the film means to us instead of relying on an objective interpretation that relies on the opinions of others. if this is intentional ari aster is a genius.
I can't believe I am saying this but this is probably my favorite Ari Aster film so far, Hereditary was great, Midsommar was pretty good but Beau is Afraid is on whole another level. What a film, this is cinema.

i disagree. there's been pretty good bangers hidden lately. you got beef (pretty popular), are you there god? it's me, margaret, dogleg, past lives. beau's quality is far from ari's best for me. even if it was rated as the best movie so far, it wouldn't last long. zone of interest, killers of the flower moon, oppenheimer are coming. they're pretty set to take over 2023
@sav ive seen all of those, none get close to beau for me, but to each their own. Wouldnt be surprised if killers of the flower moon beats it tho
Seeing a fantano full movie review (albeit spoiler-free) was definitely unexpected. And while we're here i would have never guessed you would be a fan of this film. This is awesome
I’m proud of you, Anthony.
now i want melon to watch more movies.
nice taste.
The fans did not deserve this... but this is what we all truly needed
just watched the movie yesterday
loved every minute of its 2:59 run time
one of my biggest regrets of 2023 is allowing myself to be talked out of seeing it in the theater
would have loved to have EXPERIENCED it in a theater with the visuals audio and other people in the darkl
So... what I'm hearing is that this movie is an NPC filter. Got it. Will watch
This movie made me feel clinically insane and for some reason I saw it twice
The dream sequence makes 100% sense if you have ADHD lol this was my personal favorite film of Ari’s, hope it gains more appreciation with time.
When i went the whole theater was dead silent until they all laughed at the attic scene towards the end
My wife screamed so I divorced her
he’s evolving
Charmelion
did he literally just make up that he was in a long a** movie just to act like he was not listening to the new taylor swift midnights til dawn edition for 3 hours straight?
I honestly think this might be this generations "Freddy Got Fingered", and I mean that as a huge compliment. Much respect for Ari.
This and Malignant 😂
Melon was a coward for not bringing up The Strange Thing About the Johnsons. Ari Aster’s magnum opus.
Fantano needs a letterboxd account
I like how melon have a purple light thing going on, if you take a look into his channel, I think he deliberately "make scenes", like when he reiviews album he always sits next to the shelf, on fantano channel he stand in the room, he is essentially creating iconic scenes, which is pretty much his "branding", which I believe is crucial to his success
Well this review is unexpected. The dark comedy of the first 30 minutes works really well IMO but it went downhill as soon as Beau went into the forest.
Beau goes into the forest at like 100 minutes.
Also the forest scene is the whole point of the film.
@@dewot1256 I know, I was just referring to how much I loved the first 30 minutes. I thought the section with Nathan Lane afterwards was just decent. The forest scene was overly long and felt completely self indulgent
of course Beau is Afraid's gonna be the one to compel him to make a movie review
The PTSD version of Barbenheimer: Beau is afraid and the house that Jack built
This movie feels like those creepy dreams/nightmares that you wake up from and cant remember all the details and it doesnt really make sense. It was like that, but NONSTOP
Unironically loved that you did this. Would love to see more
Love this film. Like beau says during the stage play scene "this is my story!". Notice the water theme throughout the movie, Beau needs water with his meds or could die, his mom's name is Wasserman and lives in Wasserton (wasser is German for water).
I have no idea how I knew this would be a Beau Is Afraid review before clicking the video, I haven’t even watched it yet.
Not the first bald movie critic on RUclips but definitely the better one
1:00 just makes me think of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover.
Anthony Fantanbeau
Need a melon film reviews channel rn
Im about an hour into the movie and I am exhausted. I checked to see how much longer the movie is and it literally caused me anxiety to know there was still 2 hours of this madness. This truly is one of the most self endulging movies I have ever seen.
Enjoyed it. It was definitely original. Reminded me of three movies: Being John Malkovich, The Wall, and Defending Your Life.
A Serious Man?
hereditary was like… really buns to me. I feel like I’m on an island here.
This is one of the better breakdowns of Beau that I have seen. Two of the scenes in house had some of the biggest wtf moments I’ve ever seen in film
Yeah, I don’t think I’m gonna be able to listen to Mariah Carey in the same way ever again!
The "monster" in the attic is one of the cutest thing in cinema since baby groot
FlyLo vibes for sure. This movie was bonkers
makes me happy as hell hearing melon talk about movies. also i love the lighting in this video
interesting point abt beau is that his mom's monologue about him not being able to decide for himself is a nod to the viewers themselves. beau is our perspective throughout the film and i can't help but feel like the mom's monologue is ari aster telling us to decide for ourselves what the film means to us instead of relying on an objective interpretation that relies on the opinions of others. if this is intentional ari aster is a genius.
I can't believe I am saying this but this is probably my favorite Ari Aster film so far, Hereditary was great, Midsommar was pretty good but Beau is Afraid is on whole another level. What a film, this is cinema.
I've been telling people Beau is Afraid is a lighthearted romp which will play You are my Sunshine on the strings of your heart
