    You know they are more than capable when the wheel not on rollers spins on dry asphalt.

    • @Jehco14
      @Jehco14 3 года назад +1

      Yeah and that would be better to put all wheels on roller but to lock those who should provide grip. The problem is that it just leaves marginal load on the wheel touching the ground, preventing it from moving the car alone. With all wheels on rollers, at least the wheel loads are the same and you really see if one wheel alone can move the car forward.

      @@4x4.tests.on.rollers So for a 40 N/mm (front wheel rate for the focus), assuming the car would be fully horizontal at the roller level (which it isn't obviously), that's about 1400 N load deficit on the tyre, which is a significant part of the corner load. I think with the normal wheel load when the car is on a flat ground, any wheel should be able to drive the car forward (assuming the differential is sending sufficient torque).

    • @4x4.tests.on.rollers

      @@Jehco14 I'm not familiar with these numbers but the problem that we see in this video (unloaded wheels slipping) is rather rare in these tests. It usually concerns sport cars with stiff chasis/suspension or cars with bald tyres. All in all - any wheel should be able to drive the car forward, assuming the differential is sending sufficient torque - and that is the point, not every diff/awd system does that.

    Good clip as always ! The 4WD on the Ford worked as expected. When I bought my RS for XMAS in 2017 and I went up a road covered in ice and snow, I saw what the car was capable of. I had people spin out in front of me while the RS was planted and worked overtime.

    You can try applying the brake and throttle together when you were stucked on the roller, like the GR Yaris in the video. Because that would give the LSD a "preload" force to enable it to send more torque to the better gripped tyre. But this trick is only useful on mechanically torque-sensitive differential, like Torsen or Clutch-based LSD. For cars with open differential that may not work.

    • @4x4.tests.on.rollers
      @4x4.tests.on.rollers  3 года назад +5

      That's not the point of the test, we are checking if system is able to do that by itself. We tried the trick a few times, including the car with torsen differential, it didn't help.

    I've been wondering this since the last video with the focus, is this focus RS stock? The rake is far higher than stock, seems to me that the front end sits way lower than stock, or the back end sits higher, which may explain why the rear wheel was getting almost no grip when the other side is raised.
    The wheels and tires are also a big part and those are definitely not stock, seems to be winter tires, in winter as you can see from the snow piles in the background. The yaris was tested in either spring or summer as you can tell from the plants in the background, with most likely summer tires.
    I'd be curious to see how a stock focus would perform, since this one was struggling with grip issues and that doesn't mean it's unable to send enough power to that rear wheel to break itself free.

      Torseny działają tu dokładnie tak, jak powinny. Dwa bez elektroniki dają radę tylko dlatego, że rolki dają jakiś minimalny opór. Gdyby dwa koła były całkiem w powietrzu, Yaris by nie ruszył bez lekkiej ingerencji ESP. Do jazdy wyczynowej, gdzie całkowity brak trakcji dwóch kół raczej nie występuje, to rozwiązanie super się sprawdza, wyciskając cenne sekundy na krętym torze. Dodatkowo, przy otwartych dyfrach, hamulce muszą dość mocno dohamowywać koła, zaś przy torsenie wystarczy lżejsza ingerencja.

    • @4x4.tests.on.rollers
      @4x4.tests.on.rollers  3 года назад

      Torsen ain't a locker. When three wheels are on rollers - one torsen is not enough to send enough torque to the wheel with grip. Here's simple explanation how torsen works: ruclips.net/video/UlnGG4frZ68/видео.html

    • @zachbrandt1236
      @zachbrandt1236 3 года назад +1

      @@4x4.tests.on.rollers Word, best way for people to think about it is that torsens are street diffs. If one wheel looses grip it won't spin the other, like if a tire is in the air or on a patch of ice, (or on rollers) which doesn't happen often on pavement. If a 4x4 or off road vehicle has an LSD it will be either a clutch/plate diff or manually lockable diff because those diffs do lock together. When driving off road you'll be in many situations where one tire might be off the ground, or stuck spinning in sand or mud, there you really need something that locks.
      BTW, love what you do here on this channel. It would be cool to see you do a torsen vs plate diff test, might be hard to find two cars to compare though.

    • @4x4.tests.on.rollers

      @@zachbrandt1236 Thanks. I will think about some compilation showing torsen vs plate diff, maybe some Audi vs Subaru. The problem will be TC/EDL which usually cannot be totally disengaged. And when it comes to torsen - two torsen diffs (TBR 2.3:1) in GR Yaris are able to move the car forward in side and diagonal tests.

    • @zachbrandt1236
      @zachbrandt1236 3 года назад

      @@4x4.tests.on.rollers Yes, it's a very tough test to find the optimal conditions for. You would almost need to find someone with a 2WD that was replacing their torsen for a plate diff. It's only when esc is in expert mode or fully off that the reactive torsen lsd's activate, and when they do, you can hear an initial wheelslip first, likely due to their 2,3:1 tbr.
