  • I remember the day when the Angel came
    In late September light
And he spoke to a man by the name of Stan
On the edge of a nuclear night
He told him not to do just what
    The programme said to do
As klaxons roared on the big war board
    And generals shouted too
But the Angel calm took him by the arm
    And whispered soft and clear
Don’t act in haste for what you face
    Is not how it appears
He told him not to do just what
    The programme said to do
As klaxons roared on the big war board
    And generals shouted too
And with voices raised and eyes ablaze
    The atmosphere was thick
And every man came to pressing on Stan
    To push that button quick
But the angel said no don’t be led
There’s things that they can’t see
That soon will show the facts and so
    A hero you will be
Well the minutes passed and sweat ran fast
But one thing is crystal clear
That the truth came through and Stan did too
Cos we are all still here
And of that race through time and space
    To save humanity
You can check how the peace was kept
    In Nineteen Eighty Three
And remember the day when the Angel came
    In late September light
When he spoke to a man who's name was Stan
On the edge of a nuclear night

Stan - in real life Stanislav Petrov - was Duty Officer at the early-warning command centre in Russia which persistently reported multiple U.S. missiles launches, 26 September 1983. Petrov judged it to be a false alarm, and his decision to disobey orders was against military protocol but prevented retaliation (later found to be satellite warning system malfunction).
