I have my grandfather's Scheer box from his work at Bell Labs. It is full of his tools similar to what you show here. I am excited to have found your video because my son and I plan to restore the box.
Check out the other video I just posted recently featuring the restoration of my grandfathers tool box. Good luck on your project. Its great building those memories.
Nice work! I have a nearly identical box but I didn't want to risk removing the rivets so I worked around them. I'm pleased with the result. Kudos for keeping Mr. Johnson's work and memory alive.
I can understand your hesitation because removing the rivets can cause damage. This box was so far gone that there was no reason to avoid it. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Looks great!!! My dad thought they were so cool. He had 3 and I kept the best one when he passed away. I want to try to restore it, but a little nervous to mess it up. I plan to use it as a jewelry box.
Very nice and informative video…I’m about to begin a restoration on a Craftsman oak machinist box (Union B20) and I picked up some valuable tips from you! Thankfully, no major repairs are needed, but just a complete strip, refinish, refelt, etc. I’m going to attempt to buff out the drawer pulls without removing them as that looks like a major pain to custom make all those tiny rivets! Thanks for posting!
Awesome. I just took possession of this exact model my grandfather bought around 1945. I've been researching how to repair and replace what's needed. This will help a great deal. Thanks.
Terry, that's a very beautiful job on that Union Machinists toolbox. Mr. Johnson would be very happy and proud of you and your exceptional craftsman skills!!!!
Lane Tech was great at that time with shop classes front and center. Unfortunately it is not that way any more and its best days are behind it. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Beautiful workmanship! The respect and homage paid to Mr Johnson is fantastic!! I just found your channel yesterday and I'm really enjoying the videos and the wealth of knowledge! Thank you for sharing! - Brian
Terry- That came out fantastic! A lasting tribute to another fine craftsman... That C Clamp he made was amazing. I am now officially caught up! I have seen everyone of your videos! I am almost ready to tackle the Century!
Nice find and great work. I think the judicious work of a heat gun or hair dryer would have loosened the hide glue on the felt just fine. I like to use small suction cups to push glue into cracks. That works well.
@@BencoVintageMachineWorks Well oddly enough, I'm now restoring that exact model of Union box. Half the drawers have fallen apart but the box is complete. I'm rewatching to get some more ideas.
@luthiermatt Good luck with your project. Hopefully yours wont have as many extra nails and carpenters glue repairs as this one did. Took awhile getting it apart without damaging everything further.
Very good job, Sir. I´m looking for such a tool-chest since many, many years here in Germany, but its impossible to find one. I personally would have used a darker stain for it, but your choice is ok too. Regards.
The stain is somewhat darker in person than appears on the video due to bright sunlight while filming the last part. I used Golden Oak stain which is the same as the original color. Thank you for watching and I am glad you enjoyed the video.
Where did you get the split rivets for the drawer handles? Having a hard time finding the right length thickness and head size. I am thinking of doing nails or screws instead.
You do very nice work! Very skilled. I have the same chest but as you mentioned mine is the Craftsman Logo from my father. Very much a piece of history. Thanks for sharing!
@@BencoVintageMachineWorks I've been trundling around Antique stores for my entire life, and I've never even seen one of those, never mind loaded with tools for that price....AMAZING CATCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very nice work! I just restored one but luckily I didn't have to completely break it down like you did but I did have to strip three layers of paint that was painted over the oak.

Hopefully yours is in a little better condition to start with. Less is more when restoring these old chests as you don't want to remove the history.

Great video, great restoration ! I expect nothing less from a Lane man.

Mr Johnson would be proud of that.
I hope so. Use the box all the time...
Great job!
Thank you. Those old wooden chests are worth preserving.
Yes they are!

YOU DID AN EXCELLENT JOB ...VERY PROFESSIONAL ...
Thank you for that. Glad you enjoyed the video.

where did you source your split rivets? having a tough time finding (except for Gerstner who want $2 each)
@luthiermatt Its right there in the video. I made them out of solid rivets.
Excellent!! What a treasure!!
Glad you enjoyed it.
What a nice find! Really enjoyed the video, great restoration. Look forward to the next one!
Thank you for watching
Just fantastic!
Glad that you enjoyed it.

Just heard from ScoutCrafter....Im in the Kissimmee area....we got whacked but not as whacked as the coast. I'm sorry you're going through this.
Thank you very much. As a Floridian, you have first hand experience. I really appreciate the message.
@@BencoVintageMachineWorks Good Luck, moving forward! This was a tough one!
Where did you get the split rivets for the drawer handles? Having a hard time finding the right length thickness and head size. I am thinking of doing nails or screws instead.
As clearly shown in the video, I used solid rivets and modified them. Rivets are available from Mcmaster-Carr.
Thank you for the video. Where did you get the new top leather handle?
I ordered one from Gerstner. It is pretty much an exact replacement for the Union chest handle.
@@BencoVintageMachineWorks Thank you!
Im restoring a very similar box having a hard time replacing the top leather handle
You can buy it from Gerstner. That's where this one came from.

These old wooden machinists chests are sure nice to have. Thanks for the compliment and for watching the video.
Gotta know what the "Lowball offer" was!?
It was around 40 dollars or so...

Yes it was a great deal. The tag actually read "Best Offer" and, due to the condition, I think they just wanted to move it....
Nice job! I am in the process of restoring an old Union Tool Chest that I purchased from an antique store as well. Yours looks fantastic.
I watched your videos and I am looking forward to seeing it finished.
@@BencoVintageMachineWorks Thanks, I hope to finish it soon.

As always, beautiful job Terry!
Thanks Brian, it was a fun project
Great work! Those tools that came with it, what a dream!
Thank you. I tried to preserve the legacy of the previous owner as much as possible.
