Hey thanks for the video. You can use an artboard as long as you select only the item you want to export. Just make sure when you choosing the file type to drop down the menu and choose "export selection only" I'm so use to working with 10 or 20 artboards at once that not using one drives me nuts lol. Keep up the great work! Jason
@@w90449 What rainbow? Are you saying you create an SVG rainbow that is opening up very small in Design Space? This might help: Set your dpi to 144, that is what DS uses and usually helps keep file size consistent between what you create and what you see in DS.
@@LoriOster Can you explain what you mean by expand your strokes? Also, In the video you have many designs off to the "side" of your working canvas, when I move a design off the canvas it disappears. Is this a setting that I'm missing?
@@Arperr12 Hi, Amber! Of course. The stroke is the line on the outside of any object. When you expand a stroke (select object > layer > expand stroke) it changes the outline from a line to a fully enclosed shape. Try it out, and then select the node tool to see how expanding a stroke changes the nodes. Your 2nd question: I like to work using artboards, which is what you're seeing here. When you create an artboard you can see items that are on your canvas, and off of it. The artboard tool is the one just beneath your move tool--you can create an artboard in any existing doc. You can also select "create artboard" when you create a new document. Hope this helps!
I love you lol it took me abit but figured it out with your help and CTRL Z buttons lol I have a beautiful rainbow lol thanks so much. I know graphics but never really got into svg's. Hope you have more videos
I was happy to see that you were able to create a very complex design for Cricut DS. I'm having an awful time with one that is much simpler. I have the newest version of Affinity Designer 2, so a few things have changed. No matter what I've tried, when I exported my design as an SVG file, it opens in Cricut with most of my pieces scattered. So, I went back to square one. I started with my heart shape (I wanted to make that a pen line in Design Space), and then I started just adding little objects from the shapes tool: another heart, some circles, a cloud, star. I used the Export Persona, and it worked great (I didn't convert anything into curves). Then I started working on creating some things to flowers and leaves, and that's when I ended up again with things being scattered. I watched your video twice, and it looks so easy! I'm a bit rusty on Affinity, but it's mostly just finding where everything is. I'm very new to Cricut, but I'm getting the basics. I just want to design my own stuff!
@@LoriOster I finally got it to work!!! It's incredibly easy now that I know what happened. I kept going back to simple by creating one large shape to use for my pen outline, and then adding smaller shapes for cutting. I realized that it was every time I created curves that I had a problem. You didn't show that in your video, although I kept going back to your list. I watched you create your rainbow, and finally figured out you were just using shapes so you didn't need to combine. Everyone keeps using text to show how they are turned into curves, and then combined. I didn't realize the same thing had to be done with objects created with curves. Maybe, if you felt like it you could do a video to demonstrate that part? You are really good, and I love how detailed you are. I haven't seen anyone do nearly as good a job of demonstrating how to use Affinity Designer for Cricut! Also, I watched your video on creating silhouettes. Fantastic job! It's the details that make all the difference. Thank you!!!
@@annewatman677 I'm so glad you worked it out! Do you mean it worked better for you if you didn't convert to curves? I always convert everything to curves, but maybe that's not the best approach?
@@LoriOster I’m going to! I’m pretty good with the pen tool, and I love detail! I subscribed, and I need to see what else you have. I also like the “overlapped” rings. You do some very fun, practical demos here. Thank you.
Hi, Vicki! I actually don't have any experience with sublimation printing, so I'm not sure about that. The advantage to an SVG is that it keeps the different design's layers intact, but that's not something you need with a sublimation printer. My best guess is that you CAN use SVGs for sublimation, but other file types such as PNG, JPG, etc probably work, too!
When you were copy & pasting the rectangle from each bow, is there no way of slicing the whole of the rainbow in one action? I was able to do this in Adobe Illustrator and frustrated attempting this with Affinity. The Geometry buttons I have found are a little buggy. I have had freezes and software quit trying to use them. It was my most used tool in AI so it is a regular frustration I face. I have contacted Affinity to see if they can rectify. Don't you think its frustrating that you cant cut the top shape from layers of shapes underneath in 1 action?
Hi! You would first convert to curve if it isn't a curve already. But if the curve has a stroke applied, you then want to expand it so the proportions don't distort if your end user resizes the image.

Aaah! Of course! This makes so much sense. Thank you! Yes, I much prefer using artboards, too!

Great video, thanks! It's exactly was I was looking for because I'm a newbie newbie in both Affinity and Cricut. beautiful Mother's Day design.
Hi, Lesley! I'm so glad it's helpful!
Finally, someone told me to expand my strokes. Fixed my problems!!!

Are SVG vulnerable to CSV files? Just outta curiosity? Nice tutorial btw straight 2 business🤛👍

What are the settings you use when setting up a new document to start an affinity project? Thanka
Hi! It depends entirely on what the final project will be. For SVGs I create a new SVG and size it at least 15 inches.
thanks for sharing. please make more content of affinity. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! Any special requests for an AD tutorial?
