Thanks for sharing your Jeep. Everything on a TJ is very easy to work on. The rear oil seal is an easy fix and you can replace the oil pump at the same time. Timing chain is a breeze the parts are cheap. Don't waste your time or money on a rear Dana 44. A TeraFlex TJ Rear CRD60 Axle W/Pro LCG Truss is the only way to go, NO WEAK TRACK BAR. Plenty of power in my 2003 khaki Rubicon 1st owner. I run 5.13 on Q78- 15LT Interco's with TeraFlex PRO LCG 5" lift 1" body lift and a TeraFlex high lift steer. Run the stock rear sway bar only, very soft ride. Been a daily driver for 12 years now. I am installing an Atlas 2 transfer case with 5 to 1 low. It just arrived took 3 months well wort the wait. Next I will replace the stock dana 44 rubicon front axle with a tera flex dana 60 . Bead lockers are for competition save your money for bigger axles the will add value to your Jeep and security on the trail. I also have a stock silver 2004 rubicon with soft top and full doors. 43k California miles no rust. Only negative is I'm the 6th owner. Install lockers with your dana 60 axles.
I just bought a 2003 with only 40k miles. However every one of those miles was at Johnson Valley. More Jeep than I even know. Shes rough but runs perfect. Ford 9" currie housing 488 gears and 37" tires.
The Dana 35 is OK if you beef it up and truss it. I have a Rubicon, but my buddy has the Sport TJ with a truss, chromoly axle shafts, and 4.88's, air lockers, and he hasn't broken anything yet...
My 21 year-old 03 model year Jeep TJ Rubicon I ordered in 02 is flawless!! It has 49,000 miles with 35-inch Nitto Trail Grapplers just like yours. No leaks, no issues and I am currently building her from rock crawler to Overlander. Your Jeep is awesome and I appreciate your video and advice. I am always looking for opinons on improving Jeeps.
I have a 2004 TJ RME, running 35”, ARB air lockers front and back , d44 rear and a 35 front , chrome moly axles , slip yoke slim, 5” lift , double cardon drive shafts front and rear , and pretty much anything else suspension wise for a lifted TJ , sad thing is I live in Saskatchewan Canada and it’s prairie flat lol , no kewl trails ,rock climbs , mud bogs …… just flat flat land lol
My 2002 TJ is running a 4" lift and 35's. I have owned it since 2005. I have a pair of new G2 D44 axle assemblies waiting to be swapped in. 30 spline chromoly axles, 4.88's, and detroit truetracs front and rear. Mine is more of a general explorer than a rockhound. Good video and good advice!
@@_everydayoffroad_ I have had them in my garage for around 7 years. Bought them new from the factory but never got around to installing them. This is the year I finish the build! lol
If you’re wanting to go to a long arm and 37s you should probably think about doing a rear stretch as well. Rock Krawler has a belly pan style long arm setup with 5” stretch. Outboard your rear shocks and motobilt stretch gas tank.
I learned along time ago you either buy cars parts or you pay a car payment. My tj I have to work on and buy parts my tow rig I pay a payment and not parts

Thank you i really need it to ear that just purchase a 2004 tj and it has been at the shop for almost two weeks but i do like to drive it hopefully will be out from the shop this weekend
another good video, im running 4.56's with a 5 speed too, does pretty good on the rocks, I will say installing a hand throttle helped me out a ton on crawling up rocks.
Nice setup. Im running an 06 Rubi with stock 4:10 gears. Only way thats tolerable is the 6 speed gives a pretty low 1st gear and the Rubi t/case. Plus, only running 35s. I do like the road manners, tho, that those gears give.
Great video, and content. I just did a TJ for my Dad on my channel (jeepNdirt) for those who DON'T intend on wheeling hard. It's titled "everyday TJ" avoiding high cost of JL upgrades. Agree with the info you provide here. I too suggest to folks, find the best bang for your buck but also know that a jeep will still require dollars to get it where you want it. The question is, how much is too much for what you intend to do but having said that for me a jeep is a long term expense so I don't nickle and dime too much given that I'll spend what I need to spend knowing that it will help me in the long run. My YJ of over 21 years is still my baby and my new (to me) very built JLUR (as seen on my channel) will be with me for the next 20 plus years which is why it's built to run 38's. Great stuff brother. I'm subscribed for sure now. Lol.
Dang 37s I have an 04 TJ and I run a short arm on a dana 35(with chrome moly shafts) it does fine on 33s and a 3.5" lift I just now need 16" wheels so i can beef up the tie rod and drag link and would maybe consider 35s I'd like to gear at 4.56 and put a locker in the front Haven't done much crazy rock crawling, but a lot of trials. Very nice jeep!
Atlas 4 speed is very heavy. I have one. Works great. Allows multiple ratios for different trail conditions. Bad things about it, can't flat tow. Other thing about it, you'll need to win the lottery, but who cares. JEEP does stand for "Just Empty Every Pocket!"
YJ guy here, I have an ‘87 wrangler with 35” tires, I bought it that way and ended up breaking the spider gears on the stock 3.07 gears so I had 4.56 gears put in. It’s a 4.2l with a MC 2150 carb minimal vacuum lines, an ax15 transmission and np231 transfer case… I cannot get this thing to go over 60mph or above 2000rpms in 5th gear here in flatistan Florida… I’d at least like to be able to keep up at highway speeds… starting to regret not going with 4.10 gears
Have been checking out your content. Nice Jeep and channel. I purchased an 04 Rubicon new and ran it on 33's and short arms for 10 or 11 years. For some reason I talked myself into selling it, life happens. Just purchased another 04 Rubicon with long arms and 35's, regeared to 4.88's and did a Centerforce clutch, love it! Pretty confident you will be impressed after you regear to 4.88's.
One of my biggest regrets in my LJ is buying shittybilt rear bumper and tire carrier. I had their front bumper which was fine but their tire carrier rattled so much and eventually broke off the bumper on the trail. Eventually switched the bumpers to Motobilt which are 1000x better
I might have said this comment in one of your other vids not sure but I have an 04 Columbia edition I got it with 32k org miles I was super picky 2 I looked for almost 2 years I am finally putting a lift on it gonna go with 4" headed to the jeep shop 2moro 1st thing in am and decide what brand to go with I've been leaning towards the rough country x series $1700 comes with pretty much everything I can't wait it's gonna be a huge transformation gonna go with 33's hopefully then I don't have 2 make any changes and lose to much power between the lift and labor and rims and tires this is gonna hurt..hopefully get mine looking like yours someday soon. Def will rock ur windshield logo lemme no how to do the shipping
The gearing being too high is probably why you haven’t broke an axle. Larger tires apply more leverage to the outside of the axle and lower gear ratios apply more leverage to the inside of the axle. Skinny axles can’t handle all that leverage.
I took my '06 Rubicon out 1day with doors off and wowza, what a haz/pain without side mirrors. lol, little did I know then that it was illegal ta boot. ~ I couldn't find decent hard half doors as your TJ, so I got (forgetting what brand) a pair of those half door looking fabbed with pipe, with mirrors. I liked them, but... When I put the regular full doors back on my interior light kept popping on. Slam slam slam..many times kept coming back on after a bump. :-l ~~ It turns out that them pipe doors are off spec on the tab that pushes the button in when closing, and squished the buttons too far in. Luckily I was able to take the buttons out, push back to where supposed to be and are still fine. Waaa, meantime there them pipe doors are hanging in the garage mocking me. ~ Bit of fear to try and bend them thick/welded tabs. ~ How to measure is tripping me up as well.
The throwout bearing went out on my '89 YJ at around 25k miles. 57k on my '06 Rubi' and the clutch needs to go in to be attended to. Sometimes I get odd sounds that sound clutch related.
My biggest regret is replacing my drums. Ever since there’s a squeak every now and then that annoys the crap out of me and the guy who did it said there’s nothing he can do.
Take the license plate mount off and get just your plate itself. Wrap it around a spray paint can or something similar to get the radius to match the tub corner radius. Re-attach it to the tub by drilling small holes and using self tappers.
Hey man loving your vids, bought my sport with a D35 because it had disk brake so I also bought a D44 then did some revolution gears and axles, then added a ARB air locker. I did go with 4:88s Im currently saving for a longarm kit and some raceline beadlocks
Dana 35's in TJ's are very good axle for running stock. People always point to the axles for upgrading to 35" or bigger tires, but that isn't even half the story. If you want to go up to 35's or bigger you need a 4" lift with a 1" body lift. You need new control arms. You need a SYE. You need new steering. You need new/bigger front disk brakes. You need higher gearing to keep your RPMs in the correct range. I'm sure I am forgetting some stuff too. It is a lot more than just the Dana 35 keeping people from the big tire upgrade and it is VERY expensive. 33's can save you a lot of money, but still require a lot of the things listed to drive well and use lockers.
put a gear reduction kit in your transfer case and stay with the 4.56. The 488 pinion is not as strong. One less tooth with is a lot on that small gear. You will hate the needed regular maintenance on the beadlocks. Trust me. Really Beadlocks weigh a TON so you will need disc brakes on the rear with a hydroboost system or just go bigger on your brekes which increases the weight even more. More regrets. And now ofcourse your dana 30 is no longer enough. Lotto?
Any regrets or problems with the Hyline rear bumper tire carrier? I like the simplicity of it and the ability to open the tailgate without having to unlock and swing out some big ol tire carrier. Anyhow just wanting to know your honest feedback.
I think you will be disappointed with 4.88’s and 37’s for the type of wheeling you do. That’s how mine was set up when I bought it. Nowhere near enough gear. I ended up putting in a Rubicon 241J transfer case. It works great now.
digging the TJ content. I just got a 3 inch lift and its driving great. Created some humming at 50+ but that is a problem for another time. I got the X as well, how much do you reckon swapping the dana 35 out for 44 will run total?
Depends on what you want it set up for. Hardcore wheeling with lockers, beefy shafts, etc. even buying a used 44 out of a TJ and building it you’ll be looking around $3k minimum. $1000-$1500 for the axle, $1000 for the locker, $500 or so for shafts, etc.
I bought a 98 TJ jeep that was setup correctly to run 35 inch tires. The tires and rims need to be replaced at the moment i dont do much trail riding it just gets me back and forth to work. I would love to run 37 on it and i would like to go beadlocks i was told that the 105 methods would not fit because of the bolt pattern. I have 4.56gears at the momen. I have buy tires now because of the shape they are in. Would you go 37s and regear later and is the 98 TJ is the bolt pattern not 5x5? thanks for your time and your videos they are great.
Total off question but, what is the color code on your jeep. Mine seems to be the (01tj) I have no tags/badges that give me the code. Got some half doors I want to print to match my body color
4.56 is not really near where factory power would be for the 5 speed on 35s. You'd go with that ratio if you had the 3 speed auto, but not the ax15. I got 5.13 in mine with the ax15 and 35s, which is approx factory rpms, 2750 rpm at 70 mph. Especially if you plan to go to 37s, and stretch eventually, you'd be able to get by on 5.13s with 37s, with very little performance loss, thus saving you from yet another regear.
Great video but will disagree with the long arm vs short arm. Been wheeling for 10 yrs and I’ve been every where my friends went with a short arm. Long arm flexes more but you lose the ground clearance. I’ll always be a short arm guy.
@@TJrubicon I disagree I was running a Rubicon Express short arm setup for 17 yrs. It did good. Just went to a Rough Country long arm with the Metalcloak Lock and Load control arm and 4.5" Rock Krawler triple rate coil springs. My articulation is out of this world. Ride quality on road is 100 % better. Rock crawling is alot less bumpy. I have better approach angles with the long arm and it has less strain on obstacles that I hit head on.(less effort to crawl over larger obstacles) And I live in Southwest Texas with alot of Rock crawling. Haven't hung up the long arm once. Running Yukon 488 gears and locker front and rear. Best thing I ever did was the long arm upgrade. From someone that has wheeled my 2000 TJ Sahara for over 20 years with short and long arm suspension.
Long arms are highly overrated. Every 4x4 shop will tell you that you need them, because it’s big money for them. 4” and under suspension lift do not get any real advantage from long arms. They however do get a disadvantage and that’s hanging up on rocks. Once you go bigger then consider a Mid arm lift, but that’s as far as I would ever go. I had long arms and went back to short arms with 4” suspension lift and 35s and my Jeep actually performed and rode better.
I guess the reason he asked noticed that there was a little rubbing on your control arm. I had the same issue. I went with the Pro Comp 252 D series 15x10 rims, these have a -44 offset. That really pushed the tire away from the control arms.
wife and I found a 2000 wrangler 4.0 and it was mint. because two gay guys in a mansion on big island. you can find mint. ha. great video. im picking up another 2003 tomorrow 90K for 8K. great video thx
I'm running a 4.5 lift and my pinon angel is within 1 degree. I'm not running an SYE. I've had my TJ for about 20 years do quite alot of Rock crawling and haven't had any problems. Don't know what to make of it.
I own a '99 jeep tj with the 4.0 straight six and manual, a Dana 44 rear axle, and 36" Super Swampers. The reason yours is struggling to climb over obstacles isnt because of your axle gearing, its because of your transfer case. I had a 4:1 low kit installed on mine and just on idle I can crawl straight up a cliff. Its your transfer case gearing that needs to be changed. 4.88 gears with 35s would cause your engine to rev to high at freeway speeds.
hey bro! I am new to the world of off roading, a month ago I bought a 2005 TJ, Rocky Mountain edition, which soft top do you recommend I put on it since the one you have is in poor condition? I would appreciate your help and sorry for the stupid question
Can’t go wrong with any of the Bestop products and I would recommend them first. Bestop Supertop, Trektop, etc. If you’re on more of a budget, Smittybilt makes a great top and surprisingly I’ve heard good things about the quadratec brand top too. Did you mean yours is in poor condition? I have the Bestop trektop and it’s in great shape.

Dana 💩35
So what year Jeeps would you recommend I look for to start a strictly off road build?
put a gear reduction kit in your transfer case and stay with the 4.56. Lotto?
Hey, can't you just buy the rings for the beadlocks as an upgrade from the wheel manufacturer?
No, unfortunately it doesn’t work that way for most wheels.
Any regrets or problems with the Hyline rear bumper tire carrier? I like the simplicity of it and the ability to open the tailgate without having to unlock and swing out some big ol tire carrier. Anyhow just wanting to know your honest feedback.
Would you buy highline fenders the next time around? With 35s or 37s?
I've got a 2003 Rubicon and have put over $10k into upgrades. Plan on it....
Chrysler PJC.
sweet ride man
Thanks!
great video. who makes that bar thats over your head ? i cant see the name on it and would love to get one for my Rubicon....
Hi,
What kind of finder flyer do you have on your jeep I really like them.
This was helpful.
Love to have a sticker
Have you done a video on that internal roll bar? I’m interested in that.
I’d love to get a decal on my YJ!!!
What belly pan set up do you have? It's up tight for having that lift.
You may have that in another video. Idk, just found your site.
Thanks
dana 35 is fine with a super 35 kit, costs way less than an entire 44 rear axle and has been shown to perform better
Clean Lookin Jeep u have there! Nice job...
Thanks!
My biggest regret is not buying a TJ sooner 😢 😂 👍
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great video but will disagree with the long arm vs short arm. Been wheeling for 10 yrs and I’ve been every where my friends went with a short arm. Long arm flexes more but you lose the ground clearance. I’ll always be a short arm guy.
I agree on clearance. But for the wheeling we do long arms would provide a much smoother approach/departure over large rock obstacles and ledges.
Long arms get hung up on rocks. Get a good shock and spring set up and short arms will work better then anything on stock wheelbase TJ
mid arm = the best of both worlds
@@TJrubicon I disagree I was running a Rubicon Express short arm setup for 17 yrs. It did good. Just went to a Rough Country long arm with the Metalcloak Lock and Load control arm and 4.5" Rock Krawler triple rate coil springs. My articulation is out of this world. Ride quality on road is 100 % better. Rock crawling is alot less bumpy. I have better approach angles with the long arm and it has less strain on obstacles that I hit head on.(less effort to crawl over larger obstacles)
And I live in Southwest Texas with alot of Rock crawling.
It's awesome 😊🙏
Thanks!
Hey man question can you bolt up long arms on your current set up
no he can''t
What wheels are those? Size / offset?
Method 305’s. 17x8.5 0 offset (-4.75 backspace).
I guess the reason he asked noticed that there was a little rubbing on your control arm. I had the same issue. I went with the Pro Comp 252 D series 15x10 rims, these have a -44 offset. That really pushed the tire away from the control arms.
Is that a custom cage or did you build that?
It’s just the smittybilt bolt in cage. I moved some pieces around to where it works with my frameless soft top.
What front bumper are you running
Motobilt stubby
im thinking of buying one anyone got on idea on price for a first time
Depends. To get the 4.0L on a no rust Jeep with decently low miles, you’re probably looking 10-11k at a minimum.
wife and I found a 2000 wrangler 4.0 and it was mint. because two gay guys in a mansion on big island. you can find mint. ha. great video. im picking up another 2003 tomorrow 90K for 8K. great video thx
Are you running an SYE?
Yes
@@_everydayoffroad_ Thank you for your quick response, I follow you on Instagram and your Jeep is very nice, I will take it as an example to adapt equipment to mine
Thanks for watching!
If your hardware is still good the Bestop Replace-a-top is a great option.
@@gorillahd9247 The version of my TJ 2005 is rocky mountain. Will that version be considered as an unlimited version or is it a normal version? I ask because the bestop ask me to choose, does that have any relevance?
It leaks 😅
might want to wear a size or two smaller polo dawg lol, them sleeves shouldnt be at ur elbows.
Bother you much? I’ll get a size larger
@@_everydayoffroad_ it does, but if you get progressively large shirts per video i'd commend the dedication to the bit
Buy once, cry once. Get the sh#t you want from the start.
When your jeep is mediocre at best but you still need to make a RUclips video about it.😅
Thanks!
That's a beautiful jeep brother, I have a 2023 Gladiator Rubicon and yours way more capable than mine, Bang for buck your Jeep is awesome! I want to get my hands on one! Also it looks like you have done a great job protecting the under body from rust, what do you use?
@@_everydayoffroad_ thank you for acknowldeging that my comment is nothing but facts.
If your not putting 1 tons in it dont bother
You have no idea what you’re talking about
