  • (9 Jul 2014) The Russian government's chief of staff met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Wednesday.
Sergei Ivanov was there enroute to Guiyang, in southern China, where he is expected to join leaders from Ethiopia, Malta and Switzerland, among others, for an environmental forum organised by China.
Xi's meeting with Ivanov underscores the momentum of the relations between Beijing and Moscow, at a time when Russian President Vladimir Putin is facing isolation from the West for his country's role in Crimea and Ukraine.
Xi told Ivanov that he is looking forward to meeting Putin again during the upcoming BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit in Brazil, in mid-July.
They are also expected to hold bilateral talks in the sidelines of APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation), SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) and G20 summits before the end of the year.
