I would like to give an addendum. If a real person crossdresses with the intended purpose of tricking an audience (not accidently as a byproduct result of crossdressing), then it is perfectly reasonable and acceptable for such a person to self-identify and be labeled as a trap. Outside of that context, no one in real life should be called a trap.

This video cannot compare to contra points video tbh, although, it does give another angle and misses some points she did, I liked it

Contrapoints' video is more about the feminine real life aesthetics. She did say that she knew nothing about anime. A comparison would be Pedantic's videos, which I address nearly every point in this video. Also, the understanding of 'traps are gay' means nothing outside of a fictional context, which renders most the starting position in her video to be moot.

@@The.RUclipsr.with.no.Name. I don't hear people saying "futas are gay" as much as traps

    • @The.Youtuber.with.no.Name.
      @The.Youtuber.with.no.Name.  5 лет назад +138

Traps are gay means nothing as I directly address it in the video. Better than contrapoint in that respect in my opinion since she acts coy by saying that people shouldn't care about sexual attraction and just accept trans-people and mindlessly have sex. I hold that a person is attracted to the objective feminine aesthetic and that it doesn't make a person gay. Generally, the term is undefined and misapplied which confuses everyone. Trap is *only* offensive is used to describe a trans-person. If you're using it to describe a crossdresser that is acting in such a way that seeks to trick people. Dimitri Monroe, for example, self-identifies as a trap because they crossdress with the intended purpose of tricking people by 'passing' as one gender and then revealing that they are of the opposite sex. That trickery and intent is makes it proper to refer and label Monroe as a trap. But trans-people do not seek to trick people, so it is improper and offensive to describe these people as such. The term has to be seen with its proper context and understanding where it is applicable and where it is not is better than making sweeping generalization such as 'trap is a slur' as though answer was that easy.
*I don't hear people saying "futas are gay" as much as traps*
That's generally because you see the dick. And Futas are generally monsters with their 20 foot long dicks. As said in the video, the phrase 'are trap gays' is a rhetorical question as to whether a person is gay. With trap characters, they look objectively female which makes your brain conflicted. And people interpret that as a conflict of sexuality and preferences. With trap characters, you do not see any male characteristics (partially due to Japan censorship laws where you cannot show genitals). With Futas, their genitalia are front and center and tend to be exaggerated. There is no rhetorical 'are Futas gay' because there is no unquestioned contradiction.

@@The.RUclipsr.with.no.Name. "people shouldn't care about sexual attraction and just accept trans-people and mindlessly have sex" Yea, who cares what people do? Are you some control freak who needs everyone to follow your views on morality and life? Do you wish the government to impose your views onto others?
"If you're using it to describe a crossdresser that is acting in such a way that seeks to trick people. Dimitri Monroe, for example, self-identifies as a trap because they crossdress with the intended purpose of tricking people by 'passing' as one gender and then revealing that they are of the opposite sex" Quick questions, I think I know the answer but w/e, have you ever read hamlet? Heres a small summary, the book is about hamlet and his fathers murder, in order to get closer to his stepfather hamlet "IRONICALLY" pretends to be mentally ill and crazy. The irony here which the read will see is that hamlet "PRETENDING" to be crazy is just his way of coping with him actually being crazy.
My point? These people who "IRONICALLY" crossdress and "PRETEND" to be the other gender, do it so because it helps them cope with the fact that they actually enjoy it, thought im sure there are many people who don't and actually do it just because, the common story with most people is that before they came out as gay or trans, they pretended to be gay or crossdressed before in their lives as a joke.
"With trap characters, they look objectively female which makes your brain conflicted. And people interpret that as a conflict of sexuality and preferences. With trap characters, you do not see any male characteristics" Hold up... you say theres nothing wrong with liking traps, then give reasons why traps are meant to sexually confuse you therefore not gay? Which is it then, you cant hold both views.
" With Futas, their genitalia are front and center and tend to be exaggerated. There is no rhetorical 'are Futas gay' because there is no unquestioned contradiction." There is no "futas are gay" because futas still have a pussy, which is hypocritical because being a futa in itself comes from the whole idea that some people like a little bit of a and a little bit of b, difference between the two, the aesthetics of a trap is just that, while futas are actually female(and male)
I want to retract my "i liked it statement" because clearly you have a very childish interpretation of this, look, I have no problem if you want to jack it off to traps or even use the meme "traps are gay" you do you, but when you start saying "people are politicizing traps" because you cannot comprehend why the adults are talking about traps and their role in society, their social antithetical prescience and their philosophical purpose, I have a problem with it.

@@The.RUclipsr.with.no.Name. ִ did you write a master thesis about this? Didn't know that the term "trap" was confusing for many. I always defined it in the context of the typical romantic engagement dynamic where as the male (hetero) is the initiator, establishing the contact to the female(hetero). The male believing of course the counterpart to be female judging by appearance and behavior. After the realization that the counterpart is indeed not a female, the word 'trap' fits naturally. As the "female" exhibited appearance and behavior contrary to the biological reality. Thus you can say that the male was lured in only to have his expectations destroyed or be tricked into an interaction he would normally not engage in.

One time i was just walking to a convenience store and then 2 kids riding bikes pointed to me and said is that a trap which hurts when you put on these clothes and makeup to feel good about yourself and then you get pointed at and called a trap for it. it makes you never want to be your real self that makes you feel good instead returning to a miserable inauthentic self. I love the much needed balance in this videos perspective you are not calling for the outright inhalation of the word and your not a asshole who is specifically targeting trans people with the word. Excellent video as always, it's amazing how even as someone like me who gives a shit the anime and trans lexicon, he could learn a lot from this video. Especially my favorite part was when you speak about the language and its application, in the Hispanic community I have seen this stinking argument about the use of words where critics will invent terms that already exist with other names and when they are corrected they hide with "it is only semantic , the idea is understood "and I think you have given me an eloquent way of combating that thought.
Now on the other hand if there is 1 thing that I dislike about the video, and I feel that you give too much credit to the concerns of people with inferiority complex. "Trap" is neither the first nor the last adjective that is used as an insult. At this point all races, genres and even hobbies have been used as insults or demerit adjectives by all kinds of people and the fact that there is such a phenomenon is not justification to prohibit or change the language. The message should not be just to educate people not to use "Trap" outside the context of anime, but also to emphasize that people who are attacked by words that do not understand at all must stop, breathe and let it go or better yet, Now with the full context of the meaning of the word, laugh at the ignorant who tried to use it to offend.

Thank you for creating yet another great video. I used to think that calling crossdressers traps is fine, but your definition makes way more sense. If I may point out one criticism, it would be Felix being trans. Felix explicitly states in the WN that he is "a man's soul in a man's body", the reason he acts feminine is because of a promise he made with another character when they were young, it basically boils down to her being too masculine, so he acts more feminine in her place. Overall, the video is amazing and definitely the best one on this topic, I've seen you working hard on your streams for a really long time, but the result is definitely worth it.

This is good. Sad I can't show it to my friends without outing myself as an at-home-crossdresser. Multiple times they have innocently/ignorantly threw around "traps are gay" etc and heavily implied that crossdressing men are traps. Obviously even if they "know" about me I am not comfortable going through with telling my male friends my private things.
One of my friends, the more conservative marine veteran, is actually transphobic to me and has told me to "kill myself" recently. He also commented things like, when I said I had something to tell him, he said "what, that you're a woman?" He is under the impression that I am trans, and that I am one of those cliche "special snowflakes from twitter". Saying things like "all you do is blame others..." and such.
I don't want to hate him because his phobic remarks are out of ignorance and fear, and more makes me feel bad for my once smart and best friends to think I am a trans person, when I am simply a male who crossdresses. His transphobic remarks are up there with homophobic remarks from people who think "oh you act that way so you must be gay." No... I'm straight, I like women, I am just not masculine from a combination of childhood trauma and also me being me.
So even though I can't share your video with the people who are ignorant and "memeing it up" in my life, I want to say this video goes out to them in spirit. And thank you for making it.

For the case of Grell, it's more complicated than that. He can be named both, the guy literally switch everytime he wants, and he is not acting offended when someone use male pronouns to call him. He litterally disguised as a butler for Madame Red when he could have also been a maid. He is more eccentrically offended when people stop him from flirting with Sebastian or when he act like a drama queen. More, so he looks more like Drag queen.
Also, Grell always refer to himself as a lady, not as a woman. It's important note that, because it's in teh victorian era, a lady and a simple woman don't have the same amount of level. And more so, lady is a title.
Also, Yana toboso said it herself that she was inspired by Okama, and okama in Japan it's pretty much similar to drag queen, but with less exaggerated makeup. Also Yana never said anywhere (I have bought a lot of derivated product from the manga and anime, and it's nowhere to be seen that Grell is transgender). The only thing written about him in the character guide is (in the pages where there is sketch about him) "homosexual character / effeminated / crossdresser" . How could the author call him homosexual if he is trans?

Lily Hoshikawa only revealed to have a throwaway name when you translate the Japanese dialogue into English. "捨てた名前 suteta namae" is what she said.
    "But look at the colors."
Saying that implies that Sakura is a boy because the character wore the said color pants when talking to Lily. Lily could have had hirsutism, which is a condition where females would grow a beard. Saki never said "junk" since "付い tsui" itself is "attach", which can also be based on how zombies can have body parts stitched to them.

I could have used a more neutral language to suggest that they could be interpreted as being trans. I thought 'indicated' was enough to convey that without outright saying that the show confirmed that they're trans. I don't think it matters since the show overall is meh and only people who care about trans-people/arguing against trans-people care about the character.

What matters more is how anime aesthetics uses the eyes to express gender if you interpret the character as trans.

@@The.RUclipsr.with.no.Name. Others would bring up how Lily was scared about going to the onsen with the idols. We do know that kids do get scared of going naked, even with people of the same sex or their parents.
The eyes are iconic in Japanese art since they are used to help show emotion. They say the eyes are windows to the soul. The rest of the body is what helps show a character's sex when they grow. Only rarely have I seen anime kids that look blind.

There was a video on traps and everyone thought that we hated the characters and had fragile sexuality. Even though one moment in the community you can see we love these characters and we are taking the piss out of ourselves.

Contrapoints misunderstands the term and works off a meme understanding. Her general source of knowledge comes from Pedantic which I heavily criticize as idiocy.

I like the way you broke this down and even found a character who could be considered all three categories with or without all of the information about the character. Thanks for making this

good video but I feel like you repeated yourself too much. You could've easily conveyed all that information in at least 2/3 of the final duration.
