Expected a simple observation and breakdown of traps, which would have been entertaining but not deeply interesting. Instead I got a thorough and philosophically pleasing account of the nature of traps, and I am beyond pleased. You mixed my favourite entertainment medium with philosophical critical analysis, simultaneously evoking two sides of me I didn't expect to combine. As far as the content, I think this definition and analysis, as well as the argument behind keeping the term in use, but carefully specifying its context, is generally well constructed and elaborated. Kudos to you. Any counter arguments or comments I have are ultimately minor and not worth pursuing here. Regardless, well made and educational video, I am joyed to have found it and hope more see this.
You're a voice of reason. I hate how both transphobic people as well as their enemies have shifted the meaning of a useful word to a point where people are getting chastized even for it's proper use. The first time I thought it went too far was when at a certain con a guy has been witch hunted and thrown out just for asking "are traps gay?" which I firmly believe referred only to anime characters. Great video, as always.
@@SnarkyLesbian Actually orientation is primarily dependent on "genital construction" as you put it, because primary sex characteristics are the predominant way one chooses one's sexual partners. To state differently is to be ignorant of the definitions of sexual orientation and sex, as well as human nature. But yes it is unfortunate that "gay" is often used with negative connotations, especially given it's positive origin, however being overly sensitive to it's use does no one any good, as it gives one's detractors a sore point with which to attack you, the same goes for "trap" or even "nigger", which I am certain you are aware has managed to become a term of endearment despite it's sordid history. In short, don't hate the word, hate the user, then make it your own. All it costs is a little bravery in the short run.
The Snarky Lesbian, it's a fucking internet joke about fictional cute boys, and whether it's gay for an otherwise straight man to be attracted to a dude that looks like a chick.Trans has nothing to do with it, and it isn't making any judgements about whether it's wrong to be gay. That's an assumption on your part. Get off your high horse and try browsing the internet outside of your bubble, as the average internet user doesn't give a shit about your petty issues. T Biscuit fucked up by kicking someone out over a non-issue, for a fairly common joke that wasn't intended to be offensive. Unfortunately, people like you take pleasure in taking offense where none was intended or logical.
The cuteness, flatness, and guy part of a trap (especially Astolfo) are all so perfect to me. It's a shame I'm probably never going to see any real form of that perfection within my lifetime.

I really like how respectful you are in this video. as someone who is trans myself i have had the word used against me. One time i was just walking to a convenience store and then 2 kids riding bikes pointed to me and said is that a trap which hurts when you put on these clothes and makeup to feel good about yourself and then you get pointed at and called a trap for it. it makes you never want to be your real self that makes you feel good instead returning to a miserable inauthentic self. I love the much needed balance in this videos perspective you are not calling for the outright inhalation of the word and your not a asshole who is specifically targeting trans people with the word. This balance is so rare and very refreshing
Literally the only criticism I have is your pronunciation of the japanese words e.g: "josou" which you make sound almost like it was Joshua, but other than that, mad props. You have solid arguments and reasoning.
ye, it's quite the cringe In Japanese, -おう (ou) is used as an elongated お unlike other japanese vowels (あ,い,う, & え [a,i,u, & e]) where they can be used twice to be elongated. Think double. Bonus Fun Fact: The only instance where お can be used twice is if you initiate the word with it, otherwise, -おう applies
@@lucian5389 it's cringeworthy to mispronounce japanese words as a weeb who watches anime all the damn time and through that should have a general understanding of it. I mean if you are making a vid on traps and mention the "josou-seme" archetype and then pronounce it as basically 'joshua' without the -seme which is a part of it, then yea, it's embarassing.
We watch anime, because we love/like it. This whole trap thing is just a small joke people started to make after the first few androgenous anime characters.(and probably also influenced by general akbar) People just copy/paste trends and then wrongly explain it to people after they use it.
Have many people told you you make excellent videos? Because you do. It is both tragic and meaningful that we don't have any other way to see you. There's no Twitter posts or twitch streams, no community posts or patreon links. There is not even a name. It really brings that old feeling of meritocracy from back then. It is your content, and solely your content, that we have to judge. I adore that. It is kind of a throwback to bygone times, when this was the norm. Though I will surely miss not being able to know the man behind the Rukka profile picture, I will moreso enjoy the time I have with you now.
It's also interesting that he doesn't have a channel name (well, its a dot). People call him Rikka, Rikka-Kun, Kreia Video Guy, and some others. Names are important. By not having a name, he forces us to refer to him in the way we think of him. Some use the RUclips avatar, some refer to him by his work. It's genius.
Excellent video as always, it's amazing how even as someone like me who gives a shit the anime and trans lexicon, he could learn a lot from this video. Especially my favorite part was when you speak about the language and its application, in the Hispanic community I have seen this stinking argument about the use of words where critics will invent terms that already exist with other names and when they are corrected they hide with "it is only semantic , the idea is understood "and I think you have given me an eloquent way of combating that thought. Now on the other hand if there is 1 thing that I dislike about the video, and I feel that you give too much credit to the concerns of people with inferiority complex. "Trap" is neither the first nor the last adjective that is used as an insult. At this point all races, genres and even hobbies have been used as insults or demerit adjectives by all kinds of people and the fact that there is such a phenomenon is not justification to prohibit or change the language. The message should not be just to educate people not to use "Trap" outside the context of anime, but also to emphasize that people who are attacked by words that do not understand at all must stop, breathe and let it go or better yet, Now with the full context of the meaning of the word, laugh at the ignorant who tried to use it to offend.
Thank you for creating yet another great video. I used to think that calling crossdressers traps is fine, but your definition makes way more sense. If I may point out one criticism, it would be Felix being trans. Felix explicitly states in the WN that he is "a man's soul in a man's body", the reason he acts feminine is because of a promise he made with another character when they were young, it basically boils down to her being too masculine, so he acts more feminine in her place. Overall, the video is amazing and definitely the best one on this topic, I've seen you working hard on your streams for a really long time, but the result is definitely worth it.
Goddamit I missed the premiere, oh well...anyways. Amazing video as always and of course it was a pleasure watching the streams. I'm really looking forward to the next video.

A truly amazing video essay. I say this video is now the Rosetta Stone of the topic of traps in anime and it's misuse in the real world. There has been multiple videos discussing the topic including that from trans perspectives, but none clarify the complexity and misconception of the term on both sides of the debate as clearly as this one. Very well done, I hope this will be spread further into the general discourse to hopefully at least create a clearer debate on it's uses.
Honestly this clarifies the "crossdressing" concept that was in my head each time I saw a trap, or a short scene when some character cross dress... As expected, the full video was watched with pleasure
I find myself coming back to this video for relief a lot as more and more people have tried to claim it is purely and has always been a slur, now I'm seeing it for femboy. Funny how these people never have a problem with drag queen or try to cancel roux paul's drag race. RUclips keeps deleting the full comment, unfortunately. My tldr: I wish people would stop trying to claim this word is a slur when its not
I was honestly reluctant to watch this because of how crappy the discourse surrounding the term had become. I'm really glad I didn't pass on it though, you seem to have great sense of nuance which is something that a lot of the anime community (and nerd subcultures in general) tend to lack. Great video.
Apathy is death. A bold video to combat the growing misuse and mischaracterization of a word with many connotations where context is not only important, but necessary. Although I believe that you approached this video from a slightly biased standpoint, you got the point across competently and the lesson you tried to convey was crafted nicely. Bravo, always glad to watch your videos. I hope you delve into more topics like this, perhaps it may rattle the chains of some of your subscribers, I for one enjoyed it.
This is good. Sad I can't show it to my friends without outing myself as an at-home-crossdresser. Multiple times they have innocently/ignorantly threw around "traps are gay" etc and heavily implied that crossdressing men are traps. Obviously even if they "know" about me I am not comfortable going through with telling my male friends my private things. One of my friends, the more conservative marine veteran, is actually transphobic to me and has told me to "kill myself" recently. He also commented things like, when I said I had something to tell him, he said "what, that you're a woman?" He is under the impression that I am trans, and that I am one of those cliche "special snowflakes from twitter". Saying things like "all you do is blame others..." and such. I don't want to hate him because his phobic remarks are out of ignorance and fear, and more makes me feel bad for my once smart and best friends to think I am a trans person, when I am simply a male who crossdresses. His transphobic remarks are up there with homophobic remarks from people who think "oh you act that way so you must be gay." No... I'm straight, I like women, I am just not masculine from a combination of childhood trauma and also me being me. So even though I can't share your video with the people who are ignorant and "memeing it up" in my life, I want to say this video goes out to them in spirit. And thank you for making it.
I'm so sorry they've been like that to you. If they were your real friends, they would be happy to accept you how however you want to be and would want to know these things about you. I hope you find people that treat you with more respect! You deserve it.

For the case of Grell, it's more complicated than that. He can be named both, the guy literally switch everytime he wants, and he is not acting offended when someone use male pronouns to call him. He litterally disguised as a butler for Madame Red when he could have also been a maid. He is more eccentrically offended when people stop him from flirting with Sebastian or when he act like a drama queen. More, so he looks more like Drag queen. Also, Grell always refer to himself as a lady, not as a woman. It's important note that, because it's in teh victorian era, a lady and a simple woman don't have the same amount of level. And more so, lady is a title. Also, Yana toboso said it herself that she was inspired by Okama, and okama in Japan it's pretty much similar to drag queen, but with less exaggerated makeup. Also Yana never said anywhere (I have bought a lot of derivated product from the manga and anime, and it's nowhere to be seen that Grell is transgender). The only thing written about him in the character guide is (in the pages where there is sketch about him) "homosexual character / effeminated / crossdresser" . How could the author call him homosexual if he is trans? (Sorry for my english)
isn't felix acting and dressing the way he is because of Crusch being so wrapped up in her business that she can't act/be feminine, so he embodies that for her?
You are correct. Felix acts feminine because Crusch doesn't have the luxury, being the heir to her family. The lines where he says "I am a pretty girl" is from the side story prequel volumes where he pretends to be a literal girl in order to prevent an arranged marriage.
This was an amazing video. Also its me fumagawa on twitter. I'm mostly in the japanese community on twitter even tho I'm from america. Lol I'm going to show some of the japanese fanbase on twitter so they can understand. Your japanese pronunciation is top tier. I'm glad i was here.

Subaru being the exception cause Subaru is fun to tease. I kinda told Rika during a livestream that that part of his video was wrong, bur he was already pretty much done with the audio and editing, so it was kinda too late.

Lily Hoshikawa only revealed to have a throwaway name when you translate the Japanese dialogue into English. "捨てた名前 suteta namae" is what she said. "But look at the colors." Saying that implies that Sakura is a boy because the character wore the said color pants when talking to Lily. Lily could have had hirsutism, which is a condition where females would grow a beard. Saki never said "junk" since "付い tsui" itself is "attach", which can also be based on how zombies can have body parts stitched to them.
I could have used a more neutral language to suggest that they could be interpreted as being trans. I thought 'indicated' was enough to convey that without outright saying that the show confirmed that they're trans. I don't think it matters since the show overall is meh and only people who care about trans-people/arguing against trans-people care about the character.
@@The.RUclipsr.with.no.Name. Others would bring up how Lily was scared about going to the onsen with the idols. We do know that kids do get scared of going naked, even with people of the same sex or their parents. The eyes are iconic in Japanese art since they are used to help show emotion. They say the eyes are windows to the soul. The rest of the body is what helps show a character's sex when they grow. Only rarely have I seen anime kids that look blind.

You mixed my favourite entertainment medium with philosophical critical analysis, simultaneously evoking two sides of me I didn't expect to combine.

Great video, as always.
gender and sex are not useful words anymore because its based off of muh feelingz
In Japanese, -おう (ou) is used as an elongated お unlike other japanese vowels (あ,い,う, & え [a,i,u, & e]) where they can be used twice to be elongated. Think double.

The only instance where お can be used twice is if you initiate the word with it, otherwise, -おう applies

A masterfully worded comment to go with this masterpiece of a video.

Dude really made a 35 minutes essay on traps
Thank you for creating yet another great video. I used to think that calling crossdressers traps is fine, but your definition makes way more sense. If I may point out one criticism, it would be Felix being trans. Felix explicitly states in the WN that he is "a man's soul in a man's body", the reason he acts feminine is because of a promise he made with another character when they were young, it basically boils down to her being too masculine, so he acts more feminine in her place. Overall, the video is amazing and definitely the best one on this topic, I've seen you working hard on your streams for a really long time, but the result is definitely worth it.

RUclips keeps deleting the full comment, unfortunately. My tldr: I wish people would stop trying to claim this word is a slur when its not
Great video. Especially like the part on language.
Half an hour meta analysis about traps... I tip my fedora for you sir

How could the author call him homosexual if he is trans?

isn't felix acting and dressing the way he is because of Crusch being so wrapped up in her business that she can't act/be feminine, so he embodies that for her?
yeah pretty much. I swear most people who make the argument felix is trans have no idea why he acts the way he does.
@@Ellcoupit same shit happens with naoto from p4
You are correct. Felix acts feminine because Crusch doesn't have the luxury, being the heir to her family. The lines where he says "I am a pretty girl" is from the side story prequel volumes where he pretends to be a literal girl in order to prevent an arranged marriage.

Lily Hoshikawa only revealed to have a throwaway name when you translate the Japanese dialogue into English. "捨てた名前 suteta namae" is what she said.
"But look at the colors."
Saying that implies that Sakura is a boy because the character wore the said color pants when talking to Lily.
What matters more is how anime aesthetics uses the eyes to express gender if you interpret the character as trans.
