I just started fly fishing two weeks ago and am loving it. I was hearing the term mend a lot and you explained it perfectly. Thank you for doing this video, it really helped!
Thanks for all the great videos. I fish the central plateau in New Zealand for steelhead this time of year and I always ponder whether a dead drift is ever achievable because the surface always flows faster than on the riverbed?
It's tough--try using a longer leader--that will help. But that is why many people use the Reach Cast instead because it puts a mend in your line before the fly hits the water.
The word mend is misleading. to fix something that is broken? nah, should be called the move. Like "hey dude move your line upstream" but I guess we all learned what mend meant so will the new guys =) anyway....anyone wanna come fish the provo with me tomorrow morning? I've figured out how to catch fish every time I go. Big ones, Quick...to me though 16 inches is a big fish =D

Thank you for this. As a new fly fisherman, this question was just recently on my mind.

Great tips!
My only question about mending right now is how do I mend without PULLING my fly towards me?

Does someone want to tell Tom that new sling pack is designed to be worn on your left shoulder??
Yeah, he's not too bright and never follows instructions.
