it’s super interesting for me as someone who read it and completely dismissed the idea of the witch being real during chapter one, since joe is convinced that witches do play a part since he knows beatrice shows up in some shape or form because of the Steam page. super curious as to how he’ll approach trying to figure things out when he’s already solved a lot of other contrived mysteries in other games

nah there definitely moments that indicate he will HATE this novel... especially the natsuhi and eva receipt scene. either that or umineko needs to change the entire way he views fiction
What's so bad about episode 2 ? I've read the VN forever ago so it's all blurry to me but that's when Beatrice / Battler battle of wits really get going, it also introduce the logic battle which the best part of the story (and something I think would appeal to Joe's taste). I remember the VN having some of the worst pacing I've ever seen tho, so I'm surprised how solid episode 1 is after the boat ride. Maybe episode 2 is when the useless scene really start to become a problem ? I remember episode 2 focus on Maria and that there's goat people and magic swords but those thing aren't terrible.
Honestly I tried watching him read Umineko but after an hour I keep falling asleep. I kept trying to watch the first stream but I could not go past the first hour, it's just so boring, I went in and tried to watch a random part of this video hoping something interesting happens but just so bored, I would rather he plays Apollo Ace Attorney or continue with Persona 3 so at least I won't fall asleep while I have his stream in the background while working.
We probably got two more streams for Episode 1. This Friday and Saturday will truly be exceptional and I hope y'all tune in for the ending. I remember when my friends were reading through it on-call and guessing at who would be the victim, just like Joseph, they didn't even consider six would die. Cutting off 1/3 of your total characters in one shot is insane and yet Ryukishi made it work perfectly. Also love how his own brain was gaslighting him into appreciating the long start at the beginning for character reasons. It's something that tends to grow on you for some weird reason. Also major props to Joseph for being a Natsuhi fan. Peak recognizes peak
Natsuhi is definitely propped up to be the "best girl" from chapter 1. She was my favorite character as well after the first chapter and i imagine it was the same for many others
Ryukishi is unironically a master craftsman. You don't make 2 absurdly long VNs that take actual days to read, both rated as one of their favorites by nearly everyone who reads them, without having some serious writing and story-telling chops. Not to mention all the music fucking bangs.
I wish I enjoyed Umineko more than I do. I see all the pieces for it to be someone else's favorite piece of fiction, but for me not a lot of it lands unfortunately. I do quite like Natsuhi though.
Holy shit. This might be the most unsettling thing I've ever seen joe stream, but the part I'm most surprised at is how even HE sounds disturbed. Ok, I'm fully invested now.
If you think Umineko is unsettling, Ryukishi's previous story, Higurashi, will make you shit bricks at points. He's incredibly good at writing that horror atmosphere, like you're being surrounded on all sides!

Like with that super close-up art of Maria's face, and the bloodied faces of the sacrificed characters in the menu. But yeah, if Umineko continues keeping up this momentum, I'd love to check out more after these streams are done.

I still stand by the opinion that Higurashi's first chapter is one of the scariest things I've ever read, and it seemlessly transitions into one of the most emotionally charged stories ever, just like Umineko I would absolutely reccomand you read it as well (maybe even before Umineko, to understand all the callbacks and thematic parallels)!

Chatters seem extremely positive about this, and there's pretty good reason as the stream was peak and joe was very clearly enjoying the story. However, there was wrinkle at one point that I think could spell disaster for Umi bros. [Spoilers] When he was saying that he'll be pretty angry if Natsuhi's and Kinzo's Study scene turns out to be fake. Now, this by itself is not that important, but Umineko is ALL about not knowing whether what you see is real or not, and if joe will stick to his "If you're showing me this, it MUST be real" as he tends to do in other pieces of media, then he'll very quickly devolve to hating the story...
True. Like, one of the biggest roadblocks to solving Rokkenjima is knowledge about who to trust. Without it, it's literally impossible. And game (sorry, it's not a game)gives this you this knowledge only much, much later, and you have almost no way to find out it by yourself. Someone might say it's against rules of a good detective, and they will be not wrong.
I had this exact thought too. Plus the comment about how the back and forth about the witch's existence getting old is probably gonna spell disaster later on. Umibros aren't prepared.
Maybe it’s just hindsight talking from my perspective but it literally tells you in episode 3 to question the validity of the scenes you’re seeing. You can apply that to episodes 1 & 2 and I think Joe is being through enough so far to do that.
(Spoilers) I don't think that will be an issue. The reason why "it just didn't happen" unreliable narrators are bad is because it can mean that you were just lied to for no reason or your time was wasted on a scene that doesn't matter. However, all of Umineko's unreliable narrator scenes have massive amounts of meaning and reveals so much about the story, characters, and mystery. I'm sure, at least by EP3, he'll turn "If you're showing me this, it MUST be real" to "If you're showing me this, it MUST have meaning".
He's already questioned the validity of scenes. I think the problem he might have with it being fake is whether it has meaning or not for Natsuhi's and Kinzo's characters, which luckily, Episode 5 helps. I think as long as the game is able to convince him that these scenes have meaning, he'll accept it

FYI, Danganronpa took a lot of inspiration from Umineko. It's why it had the "16th person hiding somewhere" plot point towards the end of Danganronpa 1. It even has a lot of Umineko references scattered about.

Hearing Joe managing to predict three (or more? i haven't watched all of it yet) story points in the Storehouse scene alone is impressive. Makes me even more excited for the playthrough.
Episode 3 and 4 have the actual filters in my opinion. Episode 2 has the best mystery in my opinion, so I doubt anything in that would make him drop it.

A friend and I were debating something a while ago, but he did make a good point so I said "that's true, but I'm going to need three more reasons..." and halfway through I realised he would have no idea what the fuck I'm referencing, and he just stared at me like "huh?". And that's when I realised I have been rotted by the streams.

I'm seeing people say episode 2 might filter him, but I'm getting the feeling it's not for the same reason I thought of, which is that episode 2 also has a "slow" start. I don't think THAT scene would filter him considering he's already expecting magic to be real in some form. In general I don't expect any of the crazy shit to filter him.
idk i feel like it's the lack of questioning from meta battler about "purgatorio" and the game even if justified, that might filter him (coupled with the neck breaking pace going from end of ep1 to ep2).
I'm dreading the end of episode 1 and start of episode 2. Will he like it? He likes it so far, but... Well... Episode 1 story is waaaaay different from every other episodes. Will he like all the... Stuff? Or will he hate it and think that it was more interesting without it?
Personally I loved episode 1 but didn't like the rest and didn't continue after the 3rd episode. But I was looking for more of that higurashi feel and vibe, so I hope he likes it
@@yahyatavakoli1481 interesting. Why didn't you liked everything after? Just because it wasn't more "classic" mystery? That's what I fear will turn Joe off. Personally I loved it all the way to the end, and on the second reading, several years after the first one, when I engaged with story on deeper level, trying to understand it's meaning rather than just enjoying the show, I appreciated themes of it much, much more. It was somewhat life-changing experience, I've found a new way to look at people and life itself. Many people (me included) love to jokingly mention famous "without love it cannot be seen" line, but when you understand true meaning of it... It just hits different.
(Umineko EP 2 spoilers) I think him enjoying the game this early on might actually save it, because then at least he knows the writer CAN write well so there is probably some reason all this stupid stuff with the goats and the laser swords is happening, but there really is no way to know until we get there. I definitely feel like he's gonna be on the "Battler is stupid for not believing in Beatrice, look she's clearly there" side during the Tea Party and most of EP 2, but that's fine since the game is kinda built around some people thinking like that anyways, as long as he figures it out by EP 3 it's cool.
I felt that the story became too fantastical as I was also expecting a higurashi approach. I liked the beatrice debates and thought it was a metaphoric presentation of the mysteries, but when they started adding demon characters I was like “...what are we doing here”. Since Joe already knows the witch exists with cackl e, he might be more open to it getting more fantastical, but he could also be expecting a conventional mystery like I was. I feel like he would hate how long it takes for them to be solved as the story seemingly goes on tangents within tangents, and at some point it becomes more of a shounen-esque story than a mystery. I stuck through the end and it’s nice to experience the story again with that knowledge, but episode 1 really misled me about what kind of story this would be and my expectations were thrown all kinda wack.
I hopped onto the stream at around 12:30 AM my time, thinking, "ah yes this will be a nice stream to fall asleep to." Then the murders happened WITH THAT ABSOLUTE BOP OF A SONG (someone in chat said the music gets better too) im completely swamped w/other things but if i wasn't, i would start reading it myself immediately. vods & occasional livestream for now
Also I don't know if you've been doing this on other vods but since I only watch the umineko vods, I really appreciate the addition of the pinned comments/bits messages so we can see what was said even if Joe doesn't get to it
unless its the other way where stiens gate can be crammed into 24 epsidoes and still be somewhat good compared to how long its vn is. but most vns need the 100s of lines of random shit to explain everything

Battler acts like they forced him to listen to their preaching), and when they do answer Battler gets mad that they're "trying to force their beliefs on him"? My brother in Beatrice YOU ASKED THEM WHAT THEY THOUGHT Imagine walking into a church, refusing to leave when asked, and demanding that they answer your questions about God and religion, before telling them about how you won't believe in that stuff 😭 Battler my dear, my friend, my reluctant brother in Christ, you're the one who intruded in the first place. They were minding their own business
To be fair to Battler, 6 people just died. It'd be more like if there was a huge murder incident and the prime suspects went to church and said "So God did this..."
@@shcksheep I really don't think Battler was mad because he treated the servants as the prime suspects in that scene, he was just being dismissive because he didn't believe in it (to a somewhat petty extent, I mean telling the kid you lost her dumb Walmart trinket because you wanted to win the argument bro...) and naturally his family's death added to his anger. Which is natural, but it was silly to frame this scene as some sort of evangelism from the servants when they were literally just telling battler what he asked about

Im really interested to see where the biblical paralells lead. Joe is even contradicring himself, here. He keeps saying "if God exists, He would show himself" But he also believes Beatrice exists, because other people told him she exists. Feels like the author is playing a similar card to the 'you believe in the wind, even though you can only see its effects' argument.
Those two aren't contradictory, this story is finite and therefore it's easier to believe something when proof is definitively coming or not within the confines of the story. There is no end to the story of life, as life continues without us.

I remove pin messages after 2 minutes cause mods don't unpin them, a pinned message can stay indefinitely and they spam it a lot so the chat would be all pin messages by the time the stream ends lmao.

5 hours stream felt like a 30 minutes. Well may it be because i've decided to rewatch the anime and had found out that first and second streams together fit in 1 and a half anime episode. George gave the ring to Shannon right at the half point of the 2nd episode. That change of pacing does feel really fresh after the VN. And you can see characters in different outfits! I saw Natsuhi wearing pajamas! also her hair up close and from behind. Anyway what's "JADS"?

I wish I enjoyed Umineko more than I do. I see all the pieces for it to be someone else's favorite piece of fiction, but for me not a lot of it lands unfortunately. I do quite like Natsuhi though.

Holy shit. This might be the most unsettling thing I've ever seen joe stream, but the part I'm most surprised at is how even HE sounds disturbed. Ok, I'm fully invested now.
If you think Umineko is unsettling, Ryukishi's previous story, Higurashi, will make you shit bricks at points. He's incredibly good at writing that horror atmosphere, like you're being surrounded on all sides!

Like with that super close-up art of Maria's face, and the bloodied faces of the sacrificed characters in the menu. But yeah, if Umineko continues keeping up this momentum, I'd love to check out more after these streams are done.
@ Yeah, Ryukishi is just that good! I still stand by the opinion that Higurashi's first chapter is one of the scariest things I've ever read, and it seemlessly transitions into one of the most emotionally charged stories ever, just like Umineko

This has to be the scariest stream joes ever done.
Chatters seem extremely positive about this, and there's pretty good reason as the stream was peak and joe was very clearly enjoying the story. However, there was wrinkle at one point that I think could spell disaster for Umi bros.

When he was saying that he'll be pretty angry if Natsuhi's and Kinzo's Study scene turns out to be fake. Now, this by itself is not that important, but Umineko is ALL about not knowing whether what you see is real or not, and if joe will stick to his "If you're showing me this, it MUST be real" as he tends to do in other pieces of media, then he'll very quickly devolve to hating the story...
True. Like, one of the biggest roadblocks to solving Rokkenjima is knowledge about who to trust. Without it, it's literally impossible. And game (sorry, it's not a game)gives this you this knowledge only much, much later, and you have almost no way to find out it by yourself. Someone might say it's against rules of a good detective, and they will be not wrong.
I had this exact thought too. Plus the comment about how the back and forth about the witch's existence getting old is probably gonna spell disaster later on. Umibros aren't prepared.
Maybe it’s just hindsight talking from my perspective but it literally tells you in episode 3 to question the validity of the scenes you’re seeing. You can apply that to episodes 1 & 2 and I think Joe is being through enough so far to do that.

I don't think that will be an issue. The reason why "it just didn't happen" unreliable narrators are bad is because it can mean that you were just lied to for no reason or your time was wasted on a scene that doesn't matter. However, all of Umineko's unreliable narrator scenes have massive amounts of meaning and reveals so much about the story, characters, and mystery.
I'm sure, at least by EP3, he'll turn "If you're showing me this, it MUST be real" to "If you're showing me this, it MUST have meaning".
He's already questioned the validity of scenes. I think the problem he might have with it being fake is whether it has meaning or not for Natsuhi's and Kinzo's characters, which luckily, Episode 5 helps.
I think as long as the game is able to convince him that these scenes have meaning, he'll accept it

FYI, Danganronpa took a lot of inspiration from Umineko. It's why it had the "16th person hiding somewhere" plot point towards the end of Danganronpa 1. It even has a lot of Umineko references scattered about.

Personally I loved it all the way to the end, and on the second reading, several years after the first one, when I engaged with story on deeper level, trying to understand it's meaning rather than just enjoying the show, I appreciated themes of it much, much more. It was somewhat life-changing experience, I've found a new way to look at people and life itself. Many people (me included) love to jokingly mention famous "without love it cannot be seen" line, but when you understand true meaning of it... It just hits different.

I think him enjoying the game this early on might actually save it, because then at least he knows the writer CAN write well so there is probably some reason all this stupid stuff with the goats and the laser swords is happening, but there really is no way to know until we get there. I definitely feel like he's gonna be on the "Battler is stupid for not believing in Beatrice, look she's clearly there" side during the Tea Party and most of EP 2, but that's fine since the game is kinda built around some people thinking like that anyways, as long as he figures it out by EP 3 it's cool.
I felt that the story became too fantastical as I was also expecting a higurashi approach. I liked the beatrice debates and thought it was a metaphoric presentation of the mysteries, but when they started adding demon characters I was like “...what are we doing here”. Since Joe already knows the witch exists with cackl e, he might be more open to it getting more fantastical, but he could also be expecting a conventional mystery like I was. I feel like he would hate how long it takes for them to be solved as the story seemingly goes on tangents within tangents, and at some point it becomes more of a shounen-esque story than a mystery. I stuck through the end and it’s nice to experience the story again with that knowledge, but episode 1 really misled me about what kind of story this would be and my expectations were thrown all kinda wack.
I think the transition between ep 1 to ep 2 is the hardest one to get through, but I'm confident curiosity is going to be enough for him to continue?

Those two aren't contradictory, this story is finite and therefore it's easier to believe something when proof is definitively coming or not within the confines of the story. There is no end to the story of life, as life continues without us.

whenever i pin a message, i set the timer to 1 or 2 minutes manually every single time, rarely ever longer than that. i also change the timer on other people's pins sometimes when they don't do that, or unpin them myself.
i have seen reports that it doesn't always work for people on mobile though... very odd behavior.

5 hours stream felt like a 30 minutes. Well may it be because i've decided to rewatch the anime and had found out that first and second streams together fit in 1 and a half anime episode. George gave the ring to Shannon right at the half point of the 2nd episode. That change of pacing does feel really fresh after the VN. And you can see characters in different outfits! I saw Natsuhi wearing pajamas! also her hair up close and from behind.
