    Welcome to another amazing video from Paddy's DIY
    In this video I'm going to show you how to remove a broken window handle spindle that has detached and is stuck inside the window
    This is really simple and straight forward tip. All you'll need is a magnet. I use the magnetic tip of the driver bit on my drill. Also i have a fairly cheap screwdriver that has a magnetic tip. Both work perfectly and don't need to terribly strong for this to work.
    Thanks for watching

    Hi again Paddy...so I was the 1% that this trick didn't work for. But you know what did work...blue tac! I rolled a ball of it up, stuck it into meet the spindle and pulled it back slowly and voila....spindle was out. I feel the need to celebrate 😄😄

    Hi Paddy! Not sure if you can help... The handle on my uPVC window is completely stuck, cannot go up or down. With great difficulty I managed to remove the rusty screws but the handle is still stuck to the window. If wobbles a bit but something is stuck. The spindle I guess. What can I do? I tried to pull hard but scared to damage window or myself. Any tip?

      @@PaddysDiy turns out it wasn't rusted, that would have been the good ending.
      the spindle had been cut short to 8mm as the entire locking mechanism is on the interior facing part of the frame. someone went economy on the window installation or more likely it's just a really old and poorly weather protected metal plate AND they went cheap. The screws were "fine" given the surface corrosion it's the 6-7m plate they have everything locked into that's the issue, one side has destroyed threads the others half gone.
      I'm not in the mood to buy thread-tapping tools and re-do the entire mechanism so it's the landlords issue now.

    • @PaddysDiy

      As long as it's not stuck in the window mechanism it doesn't matter. The issue the video is dealing with is the old detached spindle blocking the mechanism. All you need to do if fit a new handle.

    Hahahaha 🤣 Dynamo magician... I've bought a spindle 40mm and the existing is 35mm !! neither 30 or 40 so have to cut down...(saw your video!!) Isn't there a way of taking out spindle in the new and inserting the old one ? As I don't do hack sawing.....🤪. Great clever video!!

      You will find that the spindle has to be really tight in the handle.If you can remove spindle from handle easily it will just continually walk out of handle as there is nothing on other side to stop it unless the spindle is exceptionally long.I discovered this when my handle was just spinning and doing nothing.The spindle must be kind of squeezed into place when manufactured.If your spindle is slack in handle probably better to buy new handle.Or else fill the handle with really strong superglue and tap spindle in as tight as you can.

      It's a nightmare job when that happens. All that can be done is to grind out the centre section of the window lock with a die grinder until the lock comes out. Then replace the lock and handle. It's not a job for the diyer

    Hi Patrick! Two of your videos made me able to open one of my stuck windows, and also figure out what was wrong with another. Faboulous! I took the handle off, and the spindle was still in the handle. But the little metal piece t\in the window, that the spindle goes into is broken. So the spindle can not turn anything anymore. Two questions if you have the time, I would be most grateful: Do you know if it is at all possible to DIY this problem? And do you know what the name for that little metal piece is, the one that connects with the Spindle?

    • @PaddysDiy
      @PaddysDiy  3 года назад +1

      Depends on the type of window you have and the type of lock thats in it. The most common type of window lock is a espag lock. The gearbox that the handle connects into is made in one piece with the lock. This is my video on how to measure the lock to buy the correct replacement. ruclips.net/video/5HkPks3wlfY/видео.html

    Hi Paddy. Thanks for the video but can you advise how to stop the spindle slipping out of the handle in the first place? I have this problem in one of my handles and I have to remove the handle to push it back into the handle every ten days or so. Is the spindle too short, or could there be a clip missing that would prevent it slipping out of the handle? Cheers mate.

    • @PaddysDiy
      @PaddysDiy  3 года назад

      Hi doug, the spindle shouldn't detach from it. The handle lever is crimped onto the spindle when it's being made. Easiest and cheapest thing to do is replace the handle. A new type of handle available now is a multi spindle handle. The spindle are interchangeable and are held in place with a magnet at the base of the lever. They're about 2 or 3 times the price of a standard handle though.

      Hi Paddy. Great video, really helpful. I have a similar issue. When I was trying to get the detached spindle out, I accidentally knocked it into the frame of the window, I heard it drop into the frame. Is this likely to cause a problem in the long term? Mechanism seems to be moving fine at the moment but hope it stays that way. Also, how do you stop the spindle detaching in the first place? I’m now on my second handle where this has happened. Thanks.

    • @PaddysDiy

      Try spraying wd40 on and around the lock gearbox and leaving it over night. Then try wriggling the spindle in every direction and in and out also. If that doesn't work you'll have to drill it into bits and get it and the lock out on bit at a time. Not a nice job when they won't come out
