Shou Zama is my favorite Isekai protagonist, the shit this guy has to deal with to grow from selfishly just wanting to get his motorcycles and go home to being one of the most genuinely heroic dudes in anime is insane! His final words are forever etched into my soul "I don't have to kill the man, just the malice!" A true paladin in the end

At least our protagonist was isekaied for a purpose by magic, not by a random bus.

Funnily enough, his final attacks aboard the Billbine and Bellvine are essentially isekai-ing his target.
And since reincarnation is a thing in Dunbine, he might have reincarnated as a truck driver and killed a bunch of protagonists to get them isekai-ed.

@dygardkuroyuri2624 considering the sequel OVA, I don't think there are truck drivers in Byston Well, unless there's a truck equivalent in there somewhere.

Dunbine is awesome, strange and beautiful. The odd mix of insectoid mecha with medieval aesthetics is what makes it stand out in a wonderfully strange way. I just wish there were more adventures in Byston Well besides Garzey's Wing and Wings of Rean

There's the sequel OVA. It's okay, but the presence of Shot Weapon elevates a tiny bit. Personally, I think Dunbine is fine as is. If you want more, just watch other Tomino anime.

Honestly it’s kinda funny that Dunbine did poorly when it aired BECAUSE people didn’t like the whole ‘teleported to a fantasy world’ concept. Oh how the turns table

It's so funny a fourty year old anime pioneered the idea of Isekai, yet is so innovative it introduced the concept of warring states in an isekai world and how technology "corrputed" the isekai fairy world (with stuff like teaching people in the isekai world how to build fucking *microelectronics* and firearms), as well as multiple different people being isekai-ed all holding more or less the same power
It's fucking 40 years ago yet it's more innovative and creative than the escapism isekai anime nowadays

IM LOSING MY MIND. i've talked to multiple people who have watched this after i watched it, and not a SINGLE person has brought up the fact that it turns into a full scale nuclear war??? its not even a throw away sideplot. it becomes one of the main aspects of the show. the entire last third of this series is humanity throwing tactical and strategic nuclear weapons at fantasy robots on modern day earth. we have ICBMs, f-14s with genie nuclear missiles strapped to their wings suicide bombing fantasy battleships, the soviet union using the invasion of fantasy forces as an excuse to expand their boarders into china. the united states gets nuked into submission and capitulates to a dictator.......
did everyone just stop watching this show at the half way point??????? WHY DOES NOBODY TALK ABOTU THIS

It really dose say how much Tomino just loved to make up his own ideas then anything, even though he just would BS to appease sponsors at the time. He pretty much came up with Real robots, cosmic horror robots, and isekai at the same time cause he die what he wanted to do.

@@theburningcoder5859 It doesn't matter, at the end of the day Dunbine is still an isekai (and it's the first of it's kind). What really bothers me is that current isekai fans aren't giving old-school isekai anime/manga work that pre-dated Sword Art Online the same love that they're giving to current isekai these days.
Were you aware there are SAO fans calling .Hack a SAO rip-offs even though the .Hack franchise pre-dated SAO? Yeah, we're getting at a point where SAO fans are calling .Hack a rip-off despite .Hack came out first way before SAO.
It's not only that, it seem like isekai fans aren't giving Fushigi Yugi, Magic Knight Reyearth, and other pre-SAO old-school isekai the love it should deserve by current isekai fans. If I was a SAO fan or any fan of isekai, I would be watching Aura Battler Dunbine, and any other old-school pre-SAO Isekai anime because those are important.

@@mdo7 right but what people looking for in a modern day isekai is not what they are going to get in Dunbine. Even if Dunbine is an isekai by technicality, it doesn’t have the aspects of modern day isekai that people who like the genre are looking for. In fact I hesitate to call Dunbine an isekai because that word has so much more connotations than just “sent to another world”. Can you even look at shows like SAO, Rezero and the countless shit coming out each season and say it shares a similar essence to Dunbine.
I think we should be careful calling Dunbine the first isekai because it might cause isekai fans to go in expecting mushoku tensei with mechs and when they find out it’s something completely different from what they are used to, they will judge the show for being something it’s not.

Yeah, and you know what really pisses me off as a retro anime fan? Given that Sword Art Online has popularized and the trendsetter for Isekai anime, you would think Isekai anime fan(s) would give other Isekai before SAO the same love they give SAO and other recent Isekai titles, but nope. I didn't see the same SAO fans giving .Hack the same love (reminder: .Hack was responsible for most of the tropes minus the harem thing found in Sword Art Online. You can say .Hack was the original Sword Art Online before SAO existed). I didn't see SAO fans and Isekai fanbase asking all viewers of that genre to please give Escaflowne, Fushigi Yugi, Magic Knight Rayearth, and other pre-SAO Isekai anime titles the same love and viewership it deserve and that pisses me off!!! How can one be a Isekai fan and not learn to appreciate the classics before SAO!!!
What really ticks me off about Isekai fanbase is that they're not helping giving Aura Battler Dunbine the love it deserve today. I mean if I was an Isekai fan and I found out the first Isekai came out in 1983, and that's Aura Battler Dunbine. I would be prioritizing watching that anime over the recent one coming out these days. I would also prioritized the pre-SAO classics I just mentioned above. Despite Aura Battler Dunbine's setting up the foundation of Isekai genre, it's dangeriously being ignored by Isekai fanbase (a CBR article has also raised an alarm about Isekai fans not ignoring Aura Battler Dunbine).
Again, how the hell can a person be a Isekai fan and not prioritize Aura Battler Dunbine, the founder of all Isekai anime???

I agree that this series is a Mecha above all else, but I wouldn't say it's an Isekai at a surface level only (or code of paint). Mainly because the series constantly mentions how "unnatural" and "destructive" the Mecha are, not only physically but also from a spiritual level, destroying and affecting the fairy tale esque creatures (I forgot what they're called). So yea, I'd only say it's an Isekai aesthetically only if the series forgets that

I do not appreciate people belittling Escaflowne. It's a great series, very simple story, but it handles that simplicity very well, the romance is good, and the soundtrack and animation just elevate it. I don’t know if I would call it the best isekai mecha hybrid (Dunbine is the one with revolvers and guns, even if the series underuses small arms, especially in the last half), but I'd still rate it well. I did not watch Rayearth.
The movie is okay besides the godly animation and some cool ideas.
