Smart 12-year-old pitcher picks off runner at 3rd base

  • Picking runners off at 3rd isn't very common for pitchers in baseball, but there are situations where a runner on 3rd base is susceptible to getting picked off. One of those times is when a sacrifice bunt or safety squeeze is attempted by the offense.
    If the defense thinks there might be a bunt play on, one way to find out is to pick over to a base and see if the batter shows bunt. If it's a safety squeeze then the runner at 3rd will be trying to get a quicker jump. That's when a pitcher should pick over. The pitcher has two beneficial outcomes.
    Runners ought to be aware of this tactic by the defense and be expecting a possible pick.

    When I played in college, my favorite pick off move for third was to go from the windup and step off with the opposite foot when I knew the runner was taking a secondary lead on first movement. Worked every time.

    Another good move by the catcher was after the rundown started. After the catcher takes the throw from the 3rd baseman, he leaves the play and goes behind third base
    to back up a possible bad throw which is actually what the left fielder should have been doing. The first baseman then moves down to make the putout at home should it
    come to that. Very good coaching.

  • @chadmccoy8032

    I’m new to coaching at 10u little league and fed up with the walk/steal/score/run-rule we’ve been having. I’ve seen different versions of this move. It looks close to a balk? I thought would need to take right foot off rubber, keep left foot planted and throw. There are so many ways to balk.

  • @handasakravit12

    Isn't this a balk since the third baseman isn't holding the runner?

    • @FamilyDevotional
      @FamilyDevotional 5 лет назад +7

      I think this would never be called a balk in youth baseball for two reasons. 1) the ball is thrown directly toward 3rd. It's not like the 3rd baseman is far back and off the base. 2) the third baseman can do this intentionally to lure the runner off. The rule says it's OBVIOUS that the 3rd baseman isn't trying to make a play. If that were the case, this runner wouldn't have been caught. It's not obvious and as a judgement play, no umpire would call it a balk if they are any good.

    • @daveh1758
      @daveh1758 5 лет назад +1

      Umpires are generally only sticklers on that point at first base. At the other bases, since they're not literally stationed at the base to begin with, being in the neighborhood is good enough.

    • @MJHBaseball
      @MJHBaseball  5 лет назад +9

      Good question. A balk type that many youth coaches are unaware of. Had the 3rd baseman been off the bag in his normal fielding position (where he is when no runner is on) and the ball is thrown to him at that spot, then definitely a balk. In this video, the fielder is in a direct line between the base and the pitcher. He is not nearly far enough out of position to make a reasonable play on the runner. Now, a balk call is a judgement call so while one can't say NO umpire would make this call, it's reasonable enough to conclude that no reasonable umpire would. But baseball people always like to show that they know more than anyone else, so these type of videos always get filled with "That;s a balk" comments.

    I like the video but this is technically a balk and an illegal pickoff play and is not allowed under the rules. The pitcher picksoff and throws directly to the 3rd baseman who is not on or near 3rd base, the 3rd baseman is playing his fielding position hes not holding the runner and hes not in the vicinity of 3rd, technically this throw was not made to a base but made to a fielder away from the base. All the 3rd baseman would have to do to make this play a legal pickoff play is turn and take one step toward 3rd as the ball is in the air and then it becomes legal. When the 3rd baseman doesn't have to move a step or two towards the bag if hes not already standing there then this becomes like an unfair shortcut for the defense. Again this is the rule when you pick off without stepping off the back of the rubber. If you step off you can throw the ball wherever you want, and certainly right where he threw it in this play if he steps off the back of the rubber first.

ElieHedgehog Fish apparently believes the pitcher had been in the windup position, but then switched to the set position without first disengaging his pivot foot. I am not sure that the pitcher had been in the windup. His hands are at his sides, his free foot is behind the pivot foot, and he had not taken any sign. He very clearly comes to the set position, and follows all the rules from there. I don't see any attempt to deceive a runner or batter, so, at this level, I would not call a balk. I might talk to the coach about having his pitcher more obviously straddle or stay away from the rubber while waiting.
