Fun fact: This was originally meant to be the series finale of Spongebob following season 3, but Nickelodeon renewed it for more, resulting in Stephen Hillenberg leaving the show until the second movie.
I’m pretty sure Stephen even said this movie was the canonical finale to Spongebob too, and that everything that came after this movie took place before it

I hope I'm not the only one who realized the Captain at the beginning of the movie is supposed to be the same pirate from the painting in the intro of the show. He has the same hat, beard and parrot on his shoulder. But this is ACTUALLY him as an actual person. And it makes sense as they sing the intro in a sea shanty like style.
Also omg! My middle sister who is 20 years old today, was a huge spongebob fan when she was little! She was so obsessed with it that she always loved to rewatch the vhs tapes that our mom used to record a lot of eps for her. And then when she saw the movie when she was 5, i noticed that she was crying so much when spongebob and patrick were dying and i was like "awh what's wrong?" And she was like "they are dying... 🥺" like she knew that they weren't gonna make it and right when spongebob and patrick were completely dried and dead, she just cried a lot more that me and my mom had to comfort her, like dude, even i got teary eyed while seeing her so sad during that scene. Then after spongebob and patrick got revived, she was suddenly crying tears of joy 😄
