Can’t believe this just worked!! Found a wine fridge brand new, with the plastic still inside, on the side of the road and this quick fix has it running!! The quarter turn did the trick, but I decided to order the new part on Amazon for $8 anyways. So excited! thank you for this video!
Thanks for this. Cleaning the ceramic disc worked but only for a few hours. Replacing the part completely solved the problem. Saved me £200 on buying a replacement and only took a couple of minutes!
Thanks! This video saved me probably hundreds. I am not handy at all, but just watching this video and following it very easily step by step fixed my fridge. My wife now thinks I'm amazing, and bragged to her friends about my accomplishment. Not only did you fix our fridge....you fixed our marriage.
Thanks, your video saved me $300, avoiding a replacement. The start resistor replacement cost me $7 at Amazon. Resistive element on my failed unit was cracked into 4 parts, so needed replacement. It is video, like yours, is a big benefit to the communities. Keep up the good work. I am now a subscriber.
Just found a wine chiller on the side of the road in my neighborhood. Plugged it in to see if I could troubleshoot it. Ran across your video. And now I have a working wine chiller! Perfect timing, my coils keep freezing up in my fridge due to faulty defrost components. So, the fridge is not functioning, but now I've got this wine chiller to hold me over until I can fix the main fridge!! I just turned the ceramic disc. If it gives out, now I know what to do! Thanks!!
This was exactly what was wrong with my Haier wine cooler. I cleaned the disk and it started working great. This video is better than your previous one on wine coolers because it gives more detail on how to take the relay apart. Thanks for the info.
I tried your repair, pulled out the ceramic disc and noticed that the flip side had the same ceramic face so I just flipped it and got the same results! Thanks much
You're my hero of the month! Thank you!!! My disk was completely worn out, no wonder it didn't work anymore... However I did try the quarter turn, put it back in place and plugged my wine cooler back on... I immediately heard the compressor engine starting (instead of the clicks I used to hear) and a few minutes later, temperature began to decrease! I order a replacement part from eBay but in the meantime it'll do. Again: thumbs up and a big thank you!!
So I took mine apart and it did not look worn out or oxidized, however, I turned the disk a quarter turn and I cleaned the one copper connection below the part number with a small file (mine was kinda black like carbon), and reassembled and reconnected and BINGO... it worked like new!! And to think I was just going to go out and spend at least $200 dollars on a replacement wine refrigerator. A big THANK YOU!
Thanks for this video! I have a mini-fridge that I was about to toss out because I thought it was beyond repair or too expensive to fix. Now it's running again and working pretty good!!
Thank you for posting this video. As you demonstrated, this was an easy fix and the new part was only about $12. I had originally intended to rotate the little disk, but I dropped it about 18" and it broke...My wife can drop a cell phone off a 50' rock and it still works; I drop my phone on a couch cushion and the screen cracks (true story). So it's not surprising to me that this little disk broke when I dropped it. Anyway, the part was available on Amazon and it solved the problem. Thank you!
Hey big papa, thank you for saving me hundreds of bucks trying to repair what I thought was a broken compressor!! This was an amazingly easy fix! I have a Frigidaire FWD425GS0 wine cooler, with only slightly different configuration but the relay had the same disk. I pulled it out, rotated the ceramic thingy and boom! (good boom, ha-ha!) Working!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!
Excellent video. Exactly what was wrong with mine. Saved me throwing out a perfectly good wine chiller. I added some dielectric grease to the old one until i received my new on from Amazon. Works great.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Swapping out a 20$ relay fixed my wine fridge - aka my homebrew fermenting chamber. I am NOT handy and was ready to kick the fridge to the curb until I found your video. Again -THANK YOU!
Worked for me; VinoTemp Brand Wine Cooler. Motor was clicking before, but wouldn't cut on. Openened up the part in the video, and my disk was corroded the same way. Cleaned it with alcohol and a q-tip, and rotated the disk and put it back. Reassembled, cooler clicked and motor cut right on. Motor is now running fine, MANY THANKS!
Awesome video! I got my Magic Chef mini-fridge working again without spending a penny. I went from considering to buy a new fridge, to looking at having to wait a week for the part to arrive, to the fridge is working as I type this. Thanks!
Thanks man! I just tried it on my wine fridge that belonged to my father, and I gave to my fiance. I think it's working. I will know for sure in about 20 minutes! Thank you so much!
This is a great video and he explains each step very well. I would add this point though. The ceramic disk maybe fragile so be careful when you try to clean it. I broke mine in half but have ordered the replacement part as the video author advised.
So ... a bit of a quirk. After watching another person's video about the defective relay, I ordered a new one. Arrived, I placed it in, fridge started working. It was a wine cooler haier. I unplugged it and after moving it back into place, it wouldnt kick on. Just clicks. I went through about 15 videos until I found yours. I retested everything .. all seems working. So, upon your explanation, I took apart the relay, placed the new resistor and disk into the old, worn out, worse than the one you pictured, and ... now it turns on. Praying it was some kind of fluke with the housing of the replacement. Thank you for a thorough investigation!!! Helped explain specifically the problem and allowed me to play to fix without wasting time!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great how to video!! Just took my relay apart (Whirlpool wine cooler)....the disk was actually partially broken. So I carefully rotated it until the contacts were all making good contact and did a quick check..it works!! The disk will have to be replaced at some point obviously, but for now it is doing what it is supposed to do.. Thanks!!
Dude!! Do you know how much you saved me?? You are gonna put Sears right out of business!! You Rock!! You can get a twin pak of this part off of Amazon for less than $7.00. Thanks Man!
This resolved my EdgeStar kegerator issue that I was having. Their Tech Support told me that the compressor was shot and that I needed to order a new from them.
I need some advice on getting to the area to remove the disk. Does it just pop out when I pull on the little box? Or do I use a tool? Obviously, doing this is new to me but I am willing to try it versus trashing my wine/water refrigerator. Thank you.
On mine it slides off the 2 metal prongs that were on the compressor, be careful and slide upward .....if not sure it is always good to get a second set of eyes to look at it with you.....get a friend over there who is handy! Good Luck and thats for watching and trying to save something from going to the landfill!
I think it's technically an overload protect. there are two dissimilar metals that when heated they open the circuit - this protects against having too much load from the compressor in a "stuck compressor" situation. great video - if cleaning or "adjusting" this solves the problem you may want to replace with a new one to ensure that it won't cause a blown breaker...
Thanks for posting! I just saved $700, as the wine chiller quit. I made the mistake of cleaning the ceramic disk with sandpaper. DO NOT DO THIS as it removes the coating, so I had to buy a whole new relay. As an aside, the new disks are 0.09 from China, minimum order = 5,000.
Taken a plunge and decided to replace as the housing of my relay was falling apart (your fix worked though). A relay is somewhat generic: from 1/10 to 1/2 HP. The overload is HP specific. So basically, once you know the HP of your wine chiller it is easy to find cheap OEM parts! I got a standard relay and a 1/8 HP overload for 5 bucks in total.
Thanks you very very much for your video my cooler wine Magic chef suddenly stop not cold at all follow your instruction plug the cooler back it work . Order new relay at Amazon now but my wine cooler working again . 👍
My win fridge will not cool. My compressor runs but is very hot to the touch on the outside. The pipes coming off of it, one is very cold to touch, and the other is hot. Will doing this / changing the relay stand a chance of fixing the problem, or is this really if your compressor is not running? My guess is I have a refrigerant leak... All of the fans run.
I am sorry I dont know the answer to this specific circumstance....I would Google those general description of your issue and you are likely to get some good ideas as to the cause ...good luck
Hi! I cant find a replay for my relay. I chance upon your video. Guess what: chiller is fixed for free! A quarter turn clockwise of the disc did the trick. Thanks a bunch!
The ceramic disk in your video has the circular washer like unit around it....what does that do - my unit doesn't have that washer.... is it for contact or an insulator...? Thanks
Hi this is very interesting and I'm trying to do this repair on my Silhouette 12" wine cooler. The problem is the cover for the ceramic disk has a metal band around it. Any suggestions how to remove? Thank you!
So I followed the directions in your video on my Danby wine fridge. As soon as I plugged in the unit, I heard the compressor turn on but it will only stay on for one second before shutting back down. It keeps trying to turn on, then it shuts down again. I cleaned the disk but haven't replaced the relay. Recommendations?
Found like new cond magic chef mini fridge .2.7cunft....compressor wouldnt power on..just clck....i took ptc apart and flipped disc and now it works....
Our office took a Magic Chef wine cooler out of the trash dump and we found this to be one of the problems (along with a burnt solder joint on the control board). The ceramic disk was so badly oxidized that it crumbled to pieces upon touching.
So I took the eroded part out and I didn't have a circular resister. it was a half circle and it basically fell apart. and when I took the ceramic piece off the two metal contacts it was also chipping off. where do I buy a replacement for that? and basically what do I do?
+catherine cleary Catherine if I were in your situation I would just order the part since it is around 15 bucks, just make sure to match the part number to the one on yours....good luck and thanks for commenting and viewing!
3 years later and my mini fridge was not cooling. I could hear the click when the compressor was trying to get power. I took the relay out and lo and behold, there was a dirty carbonized disk. Cleaned it up, spun it a half turn, reinstalled and my beer is cold again. Thanks a second time.
Wine cooler went again, 3.5 years later. I tried the same repair but the disk was too bare. It would click on but only for a few seconds. I ordered the part on Amazon - P6R8MC. $9.59
I am trying to repair my Primo water cooler not cooling. The compressor turns on for 30 sec then turns off. I put a new relay in but same problem. Any ideas.
I've replaced the relay with brand new one. Wine cooler came on then shut right back off .. groan. Do you have advice past replacing relay? Wine cooler not chilling. Thank you for any help u can provide ..
Amazon they are around 10 bucks I used to have the parts number on the screen in a thought bubble but RUclips removed that overlay so all the pointers tips and things like part number went away sorry.
Nevermind... Here is a post addressing this idea firsthand: Handyman Services4 weeks agoThanks for posting! I just saved $700, as the wine chiller quit. Could this still be the problem if it is clear that my compressor is getting power? The compressor is vibrating and getting hot, but the fridge remains at room temperature.
What's the part number for that disc part? You mentioned it's cheap on amazon but the annotation popped up and disappeared too fast to see on my screen and I can't get it to show again… Please put that in the description next time to help people that don't see the annotation popup. :)
5 year old video saves the day! I rotated the ceramic disc and it started right up. Thanks!

Just a thanks..you saved me $500 and you saved a landfill another appliance! You're a savior!

+Jack Martin I just updated the other video so that there is a link and reference to this one! Good call and you a definitely right!
Good call on the reference link in previous video. Made a world of difference being able to see the steps.
3 years later and the wine cooler is still going great.

Awesome!! My 12 yr old cooler stopped chilling and this did the trick. I spun the disc and it cools faster and doesn't have to run as often now.
This was not exactly like my refrigerator but the video was still very helpful. The disk on my unit was broken and had to be replaced.
Worked like a charm my friend! I cleaned the contacts and rotated the disk. The cooler is running like new again.

Is the coating necessary to the resistance or conduction?
Thanks, the "disc" in my wine cooler's starter relay was disintegrated. I'll be ordering a new relay part. Appreciate this knowledge!
You rock - fired right up - like the video, direct and to the point, easy fix. Thank you.

Worked! Thanks man!
This worked for me! Thank you
Thank you this was very helpful and now up and running.
this video saved me!! thank you!!!
Works great again. Thanks big papa
my magic chef wine cooler is cooling but not much; so this would not be my problem, right?

Hi I think I have the stainless steel strap you are describing. Can you give more detail on how you removed it? Am afraid I'll break it. Thanks
Worked perfectly - thanks!!
What do u clean it with?
very nice beats putting on a 3 n 1 hard start hope this method work's thank you for sharing partner!!!!

NBA fan thermostat
In the thumbnail, who else see's the face of Thomas from Thomas & Friends on the ceramic piece lmao
Any idea if/where these disks could be purchased ?
Amazon they are around 10 bucks I used to have the parts number on the screen in a thought bubble but RUclips removed that overlay so all the pointers tips and things like part number went away sorry.
Wouldn't fine grit sand paper work to resurface the oxidized ceramic disk?
