  • Nobody who loves retro gaming wants to see anything bad happen to it. At the top of a lot of people's lists would be market manipulation, especially considering how high the prices of a lot of these older games have become. Whether we're talking about sealed or unsealed games, this video goes over some of the easy ways that we can all do our part to help prevent market manipulation.

    1) when everyone goes right. Go left. Collect cheap undesirable PS2, Xbox, or PS3 games instead of overheated retro markets. There is still excitement hunting for cheap games in these markets
    2) collectors need to be more patient instead of trying to force complete collections or buying into the eBay hype.
    3) don't trust pricecharting so much. Loose sales often include manuals or mistaken listings that drive up prices.
    4) emulate. Physical is preferred but if you just want to play the games...
    5) understand that resellers are swamping the video game market and this will contribute to artificial price inflation
    6) take a break from childhood games and focus on modern consoles until prices cool and speculators decide the profit isn't as desirable.
    7) sell your collections while the prices are high. Take profit for games you will never play, keep what you truly want, and this will add supply back in the market.

I especially agree with #1 I would recommend so many cheap fun games for people and they were not interested now that they are within the $70 to $130 mark I'm like "oh now you want it" 😒

Great tips, I especially love #1. Now, I am guilty of still buying something that's on the top of my list like a special Gamecube game I've been looking for, but my main focus has been PS2/Xbox this past year. It does help that I have found a steady supply for 3-5 dollars each at a local thrift store.

I figured out when PS3 games went way up in price that there's two markets: 1. Gamers market. 2. The average person market. That's the difference between Price Charting and Ebay. I was chewing people out for just accepting people jacking up prices and not calling them out when the information is right at your fingertips. People making video after video saying "Wow! Folklore is going for $100! When last week it was $15! Crazy, right?" And I'm like "What's crazy is you see NOTHING wrong with it and think that's normal instead of calling out the people making it that expensive."
I even saw today on Ebay someone trying to charge like $400 for Zelda Breath of the Wild unsealed not in a protective case or anything saying "Heritage, WATA, VGA, Rare Gamestop edition!"
    🤬🤬🤬
Yet if people fall for it and people start accepting it that's their fault for not doing their do diligence and stamping it out immediately.

It wasn’t a big deal. If you were going to buy a game for $1mm you would look at the comparable sale and if you dug a bit deeper (and we’re talking about an investment so yeah, you’re going to dig deeper) you would see the connections between the buyer and seller in this case.

The best way to avoid paying too much is to be patient. Deals pop up all the time and it's possible to get something for way less than what it was going for on eBay. I think a lot of people just are so caught up in people saying that game prices are so high (they are) and feel that they'll continue to rise faster and faster (not really ) i've been following price trends on my channel for a long time now and spikes never seem to last more than a month before a lot of people notice and look to sell their game and undercut the rest of the copies on the market.
I know I'm talking on a collector channel, but video games are not a necessity and you will not die if you do not get that copy of Earthbound - there are plenty out there.

On Ebay I've seen many times bids on items ending on a price more than what is selling for straight up. Bidding wars create a contest for many to out bid others and be crowned victorious instead of keeping a cool head and pulling out before it's too late, well that's what she said but you get my point.

I've noticed this for a while now and it's the stupidest thing I've ever seen. I've seen people "win" a game by paying up to 4 times what it goes for on a buy it now search. That's not winning that's losing and proving to the world, with a receipt to prove it, that you are a moron.

The market value of a product is defined by what price are people willing to pay for the product.

Thank you for weighing in on this topic. Great sound advice provided for those who may not quite understand what is going on or how it affects them.
Anyone who is believes this current manipulation that was exposed doesn't affect other aspects of the hobby are being incredibly naive. Try going to any garage sale, flea market, or even local gaming store. See how the prices have climbed unnaturally? How many are running into the "I know what I have" crowd? That's where your advice of educate yourself was so perfect. The more we collectively know as gaming enthusiasts, the more we can protect ourselves as well as others from this unnatural manipulation.
Lastly, to those who are worried about their values falling. No one is saying your games shouldn't be worth varying degrees. As you stated rarity, demand, etc play a role as well. That said, we really shouldn't be seeing Silent Service, or any other NES game that was previously below $5, cart only, being sold with an asking price of $25. We just want the prices to reflect the given game, system or accessory's actual value.....not the artificially inflated one.
Thanks again for the great video and commentary Retro Bird!

The problem is that you have very limited control on market prices. Many retro game prices are going up have done so over the last two years as collecting goes up and supply goes down.
I see no issue with flipping something if you bought it low and can easily sell it higher. Game market value is more complicated when condition varies and so does value based on that. Pricecharting is used heavily but also is quite inaccurate. It doesn't do a good job at critiquing sales to make sure they are proper "CIB" or the fact used conditions vary significantly.

Without factoring in shipping the copy of the game that was bid on looked cheaper, but once you added in shipping it was a solid $30 more. Alway make sure to do the math before bidding!

One aspect of this market manipulation nonsense hitting the mainstream that also irks me is that it’s becoming nearly impossible to find anything older than ps2, og Xbox and Wii games out in the wild, like garage sales or thrift stores. Everyone thinks they’re sitting on gold with that stuff now. Same thing happened with comics a few years back.
Also, I always make a point of asking friends, family, coworkers, acquaintances, neighbors if they have any old games they don’t want and now they probably think I’ve been secretly getting rich off of their old beat up copies of gyromite and smb/duck hunt 😂

I recently saw a screw Legend of Zelda on Ebay for 5000 bucks! no map, no box or anything. It is kind of rare, but not that rare. It's also not made of actual gold, so I don't get it. I really feel like messaging the seller and ask him if he's on drugs lol. Some people think they have gold, and put headers up like "extra rare!" with fire emojis on it. Also, the unopened Mario 64 selling for over a million dollars is single handedly the worst thing that could have possibly happened to the gaming market. That game will sit on a shelf forever, until they decide to sell it themselves. It's really more about bragging rights. "Look at me, I have F U money!" This is ruining the collecting market. I really try to shop around. The Japanese sellers don't seem to try to get one over on people as much as the western sellers. Please don't buy games for outrageous prices.

Flippers actually end up bringing costs down. Because they list below each other for faster sales. More product listed is more supply and more demand being met. The only thing spiking prices is rarity and now the potential for sealed and mint games to be graded. The latter of course being a newer development.

    • @RetroBirdGaming

That's a good point to bring up. If flippers compete with each other then yes, they'll bring costs down. But, that doesn't always happen. From my experience, it's usually people selling their personal collections who are the ones undercutting the lowest current price.

This is slightly off the mark, but I prefer buying lots over individual games. It gives me the opportunity to purchase the ones I mainly wanted while giving me potential trade bait towards other games I want. I have been caught up in the price flux before and that's the reason I migrated to that method. Last year I paid up for Mega Man 2, Super Mario RPG and Fester's Quest. Now I wouldn't dare try buying as the price on RPG jumped almost twice what I paid.

  • @tvandlust

I think it's probably impossible for us everyday players and collectors to stop true manipulation on the level of Heritage and Wata games. They were careless, but any other party with just as much money and only slightly more brains can pretty easily get away with it, they have been in other hobbies for a little while now, and there's nothing we can do. It absolutely sucks, but it's money and influence on a scale that most of us simply don't operate on.
But I think things like, I don't know, someone listing a game on eBay for more money than it typically goes for doesn't seem like "manipulation" to me. I mean, that's just, like... commerce lol. Just some seller shooting their shot. "Market value" is just what the market is willing pay, and if people are willing to pay that increased price, that's market value now. It's not a static number. Don't get me wrong, I hate it too of course, but I'm not sure if I agree with the premise itself that this is manipulation or even that it is "nefarious." Just a consequence of the systems we exist in.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  3 года назад +1

I think that's a great counter to the points I laid out. I suppose I just have a broader definition of manipulation, where you see it as a market running it's natural course. I think the optimist in me believes that if only those who truly enjoy the hobby were buying and selling, they wouldn't try to push the prices as high. The best deals I've ever gotten on eBay (or anywhere online) come from fellow collectors selling a piece from their personal collection, which is probably where my optimism comes from. It's unrealistic to think only these type of people will ever have their hands on these games, sure, but I think it could only help for true enthusiasts to try to do their part to help prices.

    • @tvandlust

I'm glad the original OutRun is on the XBox version of OutRun 2 so I don't have to pay silly prices for the Saturn version (not that I have a Saturn to play it on) if I want to play a version of the original OutRun where the car still looks like a Ferrari Testarossa and not a generic sports car due to Sega having lost the Ferrari license after, when was it, 2010?

Some games are slightly less but its like the really cheap ones... Anything well known he marks *the heck* up. Im no good at haggling so I usually spend an extra $10 or so, but its worth it to get something in the wild.
