@@PhantomEnderium I hear it was such a serious bug when upgrading the game for PS5 they just decided to keep it in and make characters reference it. Don't worry, it is just a bug.
He is so talented. Before doing P5R, I played Final Fantasy XV where he was Prompto Argentum’s voice. Nothing to do with Akechi. His range of skills at voice acting is amazing
I love the idea that Akechi during his rank 8 says he'll face Joker with everything he's got. But it was another bluff. Like when he used his non-dominant hand in pool. Joker could keep up with Robin Hood Akechi. But the moment Akechi used his actual full power, it took ALL of the Thieves combined to beat him. Which makes sense. Like Futaba and the others said, Akechi is a wild card. Like Joker. He is only bound because he didn't forge bonds with other people. And even then, he's been doing this for years. Way longer than any of the Thieves. His true power could only be overcome by the one thing he didn't have. People to call friends. A part of me does wonder how powerful Akechi could've become if he'd been able to reach his full potential.
joker is still a bigger prospect than akechi no matter how you look at it , akechi mentions it himself joker´s groth bothers him becouse he recognizes it as better than his
Canonically Joker 1v1's Akechi in the anime. Arsene vs Loki. The growth provided from having comrades is what allowed Joker to catch up to his rival who was (at the start) better in every way.
There’s a really good quote (forgot where its from) that goes: “you didn’t make good choices, you HAD good choices.” And that summarises the difference between Akechi and the phantom thieves the best. While the phantom thieves had their struggles, they also were way luckier than Akechi. They all had guardian figures providing for them, they got saved by friends before they could reach their lowest, and they had a Morgana to guide them through the unfamiliar metaverse. Akechi didn’t have those privileges, especially since being an orphan in Japan is extremely bottom-of-the-barrel. You’re not evil for making bad choices when that’s literally all you have to work with. Mind you, he is literally younger than Makoto. He gained these powers when he was younger than Futaba. He’s supposed to represent what all the thieves could’ve become if they’d been a little less privileged. The important thing about this arc is that the choices you make are only half the story. Circumstances are important to consider too. And circumstances are what dictate your choices. It’s not as simple as “bad people make bad choices, good people make good choices, so bad people deserve to die while good people deserve to be saved.” The answer to the question "why do I care?" is that every one of them could’ve been Akechi. That's why you care
That's a good way to look at it. Akechi is such a hard character to decipher, he's constantly lying and changing up his demeanor that it's tough to read him. Such a good character, and Royal makes him so much better than the og version.
Broke: believing Akechi is a villain Woke: knowing Akechi is a victim Bespoke: understanding that you don’t need to be perfect and innocent to be considered a victim and in fact many victims can lash out in destructive behavior as a response but this doesn’t disqualify them from needing or deserving help, and realizing this is what Akechi is actually supposed to represent
I think tragedy might be a better word for it. Cautionary tale implies that the fault was mainly his. But there’s not much children can do if they’re being groomed by adults, especially when they have no other support system. Which is what happened to Akechi. When Ann called him “a victim they couldn’t save” I think we’re supposed to interpret him as the phantom thieves’ biggest failure. They failed to recognize that he needed help, all because he didn’t behave like an obvious victim. If anything it’s a cautionary tale to not write off someone as a villain so quickly
@@noonecaresbut8972 eeeeeh I think they recognized it, actually- they are *remarkably* unbothered by his whole "Imma assassinate your leader" thing and instead plot around him to find his boss. They're mostly annoyed by the fake personality he hides behind, and are *not* in a position to confront him because he's much stronger than them AND he holds almost every card over them. If they'd fought him before Shido's palace he would've curb-stomped them and killed at LEAST Joker, and any survivors would be completely out of leads to follow, on top of being blackmailed and scapegoated for the mental shutdowns. He only opens up to the thieves because he *breaks* himself open fighting them. And even then, he still doesn't JOIN them. The thieves were able to convince him another way was *possible* by reaching out to him at his most "undesirable", but he didn't *CHOOSE* a different path until the cognition showed up told him the path he was on didn't lead where he wanted it to go, and worse, Shido expected him to stay on it regardless. The thieves had seen the worst of him and been hurt by him, but they empathized with and reached out to him, and then defended him against Shido's perception of him, so Akechi makes a choice to deny Shido's expectation of him, and the puppet cuts his own strings. Ann's right that they couldn't save him, but the obstacle was Akechi himself. They couldn't reach him unless he *wanted* to be saved.
God the METAPHORS that happen once cognitive Akechi comes on screen! First of all the obvious suc1de metaphor with Akechi shooting "himself" but it goes much deeper than that as well. Akechi is given a choice to shoot the thieves to "prove himself" to Shido and instead Akechi has a change of heart, *wink wink nudge nudge*, and decides to destroy Shido's warped perception of him. He destroys the part of him that has been working against the phantom thieves to save them. AND IT DOESN'T STOP THERE! He then shoots his gun at that button (a ridiculously accurate shot btw) and puts a LITERAL WALL between him and the rest of the phantom thieves to separate himself from them while constantly pushing them away and saying they need to leave him. It's a PERFECT metaphor (intentionally or not) for the emotional barriers Akechi puts between himself and others. Insisting that he's fine on his own that he doesn't need friends or team mates ect. Because he uses lying as a defense mechanism both to himself and others. I feel like it's hard to make sense of his character BECAUSE he's a liar, even when he says he's being honest he's lying most of the time.
That's probably why he reacts the way he does when Joker says he'll hold onto Akechi's glove. That glove, that detached piece of himself, could be a crack in the barrier Akechi put between himself and others. After all, it was in that duel in Mementos that Akechi stopped lying and dropped the facade, even if only partially and for a moment. We got a brief glance of what lies present beneath the literal and metaphorical mask.
Despite the fact that Akechi tried to play you and the phantom thieves, and you tried to play him back... you cannot form or strengthen a Social Link/Confidant through superficial means. Despite everything goong on around the two of you, whenever you hang out with him, you were genuinely forming a connection and are getting closer to him. It's a testament to how strong the two of you's bond is that even when the both of you reveal who you truly are to each other, the Confidant link didn't break off.
Slight spoilers for P4, won't be explicit . . . . . And also how it didn't morph into a different arcana entirely, like in P4. Akechi still stayed as Justice all the way through his confidant, even after the revelation of his true nature. Even at his most manic and broken, he was still Joker's Justice (and trusted him to be his as well, what with entrusting Shido to him in his stead).
@@walterwallman3566 SPOILERS - Arc 9 In Maruki's reality, both get what they wanted, Ren and Akechi: A new chance to make things right - so, in a way, unlike the other Phantom Thiefs, Joker was allowed by Maruki to be conscious of the change of the world. and his desire was actualized as Akechi coming back into life and in turn, this real Akechi could enjoy his teammates and being his real self: Not as the second coming of the detective prince, nor as a ruthless killer, but as a cynical guy who has now his Unreversed Justice that could be enacted, so he could "exist" in his own terms. Be being Manipulated by both Yaldabaoth and Shido, he was just a puppet. And now, a benevolent, but still a puppeteer, manifested himself, like the others. @@Falconslash3and the voice of kimimaro from Naruto. Coincidentally, kimimaro also had to take a medicine that would nearly kill him to make him more powerful, just like shido did (though in shido’s case the power came from a political area rather than a strength area)
1:20:47 that’s a Daruma doll! Usually you get one with no eyes and fill the left eye in while thinking of a goal you’re trying to achieve. @@Loner098 Japan in general is a nation of pride in the "traditional ways". If it isn't the conservative lifestyle then it's not the right lifestyle. The culture is governed on other's perceptions of you and your personal honor. In general the system as a whole is screwed up. People also seem to have a poor understanding of this lifestyle because it's so opposing to western norms. Like we tend to say their education system is amazing seeing how high their average intelligence is, but in reality their education system is pretty cruel and grueling, it's more the expectations you need to succeed are so much higher, it's their culture that has resulted in people accepting how screwed up things tend to be.
Man this game emotionally broke me I first lost my fav character Akechi and thought:"Well at least I have my second favorite character Ryuji!" AND THEN THEY DID THE FAKE DEATH THING AND I WAS CRUSHED
That reminds me of what happened with my favorite characters from Harry Potter. (Spoilers for Order of the Phoenix through the end of Deathly Hallows) My favorite character (Sirius) dies, I choose a new one. New favorite character (Dumbledore) dies next movie. Third choice for favorite character (Dobby) died at the end of the next movie. 2/3 of my next favorite characters (Lupin and the Weasley twins) died about 3/4 of the way through the last movie. By that point I was refusing to admit that Hagrid was my favorite of the remaining characters
Your large laughs of disbelief, amazement, and happiness when Akechi transformed were the same as mine. I was screeching when this happened!! This is probably one of my favorite reveals in gaming that I’ve ever played. Ugh. So, so cool.
What hurts even more is that Akechi just wanted to be loved and appreciated and he was jealous as joker had what he didn’t even tho he was an “ace detective” and at first you think there is no changing his mind he is insane but throughout the fight you see him slowly just breaking down and finally you his RIVAL got through to him in the end and managed to do the right thing. Even if it did cost him his life he went out protecting probably the only friend he has truly made and the only one whom he cared for even if he didn’t admit it. Fuck it just hurts
JC I know you're probably getting asked by everyone to play persona 3 or 4 next but if you really love 5 I suggest trying out persona 5 strikers. The spinoffs are always just such a love letter to the fans of that specific game, i think you'd love it
@@IvinationOTM true i loved tactica as well, but it feels more hit or miss imo just the nature of being a tactics game. Toshiro is the most goated character of all time tho
I mentioned this on one of the streams, but since RUclips doesn’t have Twitch’s comment limit, I can share a little more on here. 🙂 Part of the reason why I think the engine room scene works as well as it does is that the game spent all this time building up Akechi as this rival for the Phantom Thieves and especially Joker. But in that moment, everything turned on its head. The once fearsome Detective Prince is reduced to little more than, as Morgana said, a kid throwing a temper tantrum. In this scene, the Thieves are revealed to be the ultimate foil for him. He may have soloed all those palaces before and conducted all the mental shutdowns, but he was missing the one thing the Thieves had: real friendship. A lot of people criticize the Okumura arc (Arc 5) for how it handled the squabbling between Morgana and Ryuji, and I agree it could’ve been handled better. But I think that arc makes this one pay off more because we know the Thieves have moved past caring what other people think. They do what they do because they don’t want to see anyone else go through what they’ve been through. The tragic irony of Akechi is that in Arc 6, he set himself up as someone who could empathize with the Thieves as part of his lies. But in doing so, he completely missed the common ground he did have (being wronged by Shido). The only times we saw him being truly vulnerable were arguably the Rank 8 confidant event (“I’m going to be entirely honest with you: I hate you.”) and this scene. I think the Thieves were compassionate toward him because in finally embracing who they were, they recognized how similar he really was to them, even with his inexcusable actions. But in the end, he was the one they couldn’t save.
I cant wait to see his reactions to the third semester seeing how he talked about the difference between Akechi and Shido and the characters emmotional investments in the antagonist. Thats all. Not gonna elaborate any further.
They already knew he was evil. They say so in the flashbacks that they knew he was the guy as soon as he knew they were the phantom thieves. Plus he never even mentioned the metaverse navigator showing up, he just joined them without it even being a surprise. Plus he "deducted" how the palaces work, but had no idea about how they steal hearts. He seemed actually surprised about it.
@azk9218 I think they more did it because they already knew he couldn't be trusted. Think of it like calling him a backstabber or unloyal. Crows are synonyms with being pests, but cunning ones. Crows aren't as foolish as most animals which is why things like scarecrows work because they recognize what a person looks like. Plus he did already tell them to disband the thieves after this palace. He was too preoccupied with the idea he had already won to see they knew long ago he couldn't be trusted.
It's definitely going to end on Sunday. All he has to do is break the cup and he beats the game. Hopefully that Kasumi bug gets patched soon, I don't want JC to be convinced that there're aliens in this game

57:51 Funny thing about Protect (the Confidant ability that caused Makoto to save Joker)...the person doing the protecting takes the exact amount of damage Joker would've taken, except that they automatically endure the hit and can't die from it. Joker had 482 HP, so if Protect hadn't kicked in, he would have taken 483 damage and died to exactly 1 damage over lethal. That sure would've been infuriating, wouldn't it?
Been watching the streams (which I almost never have the patience to do) but I still loooove these reaction videos. Cuz the highlights and the editing make it totally worth it
Thank you for skipping the part where they beat the crap out of Ryuji after he almost died, and leave him on the ground. That was definitely the worst single scene of the whole game.
It could've been worse, the game could've actually showed Ryuji getting hurt. Also, yes it was horrible. If I hadn't romanced Ann, I'd be more offended.
@@destinydivided8689 it’s completely out of character for all of them in my opinion, especially Haru. And that’s not even getting into how fucked up it is to have the physical abuse victim character get physically abused by his own friends just for almost dying and not immediately assuming his friends thought he was dead without even trying to wait to see if he got out okay!
Agreed. I legit couldn’t believe they did that to him. Whichever writer wrote that needs to take a look in the mirror. If Ryuji was a girl, that NEVER would have happened. I’m tired of male victims of violence being trivialized
Shido is business, Akechi is personal. Shido is the joy of wrapping up every loose end, Akechi is the emotional catharsis. Yes, Akechi stands out a bit more in the long run, but Shido is a good fight for what it needs to do. Narratively, Shido is the reason the phantom thieves even exist, and his own hubris causes his downfall by looking down on the person who will rise to beat him. Shido connects every prior villain not because it is needed, but to get everything wrapped up in a neat bow to stop loose ends. Arc doesnt feel resolved? That is kinda the point, but i cant say more until you finish off what was in the base game. It is why Shido feels like business; he is a stepping stone for the thieves, and the fight means more to Shido than to those who have to foil him. The thieves knew he was scum from day 1, and all the connections to joker are only an excuse to act. Shido meanwhile ignores everyone who cant give him power, and is constantly looking for ways to stab them in the back and discard them once they serve no more purpose, and it is someone he completely disregards as having value to offer him that takes him down. Not a stranger, not a tool, not even one of his allies, but someone he wronged seeing no way they could touch him. Shido overlooked Joker, now Joker, as the player's window into that world, overlooks Shido.
@@destinydivided8689He probably help finically-he was given the principle job because he help Shido. They only contacted him when they think someone from Shujin is using metaverse.
@@destinydivided8689 The principal was a suck up. It is likely less that shido needed him and more he wanted shido's aid. Shido, being the bastard he is, kept him around as long as he could offer something (which, for most of the game, is phantom thief intel, and before was likely more control over kamoshida thank's to his medalist history alongside economic contributions and "brainwashing" students into supporters, even if that last one is the most unrealistic.) and took him out when there was nothing left to give so as not to leave the loose end. Yes, the principal is mostly speculative, but investigating the phantom thieves is spelled out explicitly, and dealing with the police investigation that followed isnt that much of a stretch from there, even if it wasnt shido's direct orders. Most realistically, it was a web of connections with the principal answering to the SIU director who recruited him for the networking reasons, and the SIU director reporting directly to Shido. When the SIU director was taken out of the equation, shido reached out to his network to see who was no longer contributing and cut them off before they could splinter, at which point the principal could only buy a little time (enough to send the school on a trip).

Goro Akechi would be the type of guy to say he's """fine""" and have three bullet wounds to the stomach
This guy gets it
Layers upon layers upon layers
That's probably why he reacts the way he does when Joker says he'll hold onto Akechi's glove. That glove, that detached piece of himself, could be a crack in the barrier Akechi put between himself and others. After all, it was in that duel in Mementos that Akechi stopped lying and dropped the facade, even if only partially and for a moment. We got a brief glance of what lies present beneath the literal and metaphorical mask.
PT: Can we talk about your feelings
Akechi: I would literally rather die
Joker: Yeah that one is especially concerning
Despite the fact that Akechi tried to play you and the phantom thieves, and you tried to play him back... you cannot form or strengthen a Social Link/Confidant through superficial means. Despite everything goong on around the two of you, whenever you hang out with him, you were genuinely forming a connection and are getting closer to him. It's a testament to how strong the two of you's bond is that even when the both of you reveal who you truly are to each other, the Confidant link didn't break off.
Slight spoilers for P4, won't be explicit

And also how it didn't morph into a different arcana entirely, like in P4. Akechi still stayed as Justice all the way through his confidant, even after the revelation of his true nature.
Even at his most manic and broken, he was still Joker's Justice (and trusted him to be his as well, what with entrusting Shido to him in his stead).
The one friend who you can't save no matter how hard you try is my favourite interpretation of him
@@walterwallman3566 SPOILERS - Arc 9
In Maruki's reality, both get what they wanted, Ren and Akechi: A new chance to make things right - so, in a way, unlike the other Phantom Thiefs, Joker was allowed by Maruki to be conscious of the change of the world. and his desire was actualized as Akechi coming back into life and in turn, this real Akechi could enjoy his teammates and being his real self: Not as the second coming of the detective prince, nor as a ruthless killer, but as a cynical guy who has now his Unreversed Justice that could be enacted, so he could "exist" in his own terms. Be being Manipulated by both Yaldabaoth and Shido, he was just a puppet. And now, a benevolent, but still a puppeteer, manifested himself, like the others. I first lost my fav character Akechi and thought:"Well at least I have my second favorite character Ryuji!"
AND THEN THEY DID THE FAKE DEATH THING AND I WAS CRUSHED
That reminds me of what happened with my favorite characters from Harry Potter. (Spoilers for Order of the Phoenix through the end of Deathly Hallows)
My favorite character (Sirius) dies, I choose a new one.
I think I clicked faster than The Reaper Video this time
Honestly W voice acting from Robbie
Robbie Daymind is absolute fire in this scene. Absolutely unhinged in one of the best dramatic scenes in visual arts history, movies included.

I’ve been watching the streams live when I can, VODs when I can’t, but yes my thoughts exactly
1:29:01
Haru: Can we attack?
JC: No. *Begins to vibe*

Tactica as well! That was my introduction to Persona 5
Part of the reason why I think the engine room scene works as well as it does is that the game spent all this time building up Akechi as this rival for the Phantom Thieves and especially Joker.
I’m so glad Akechi’s arc captured you the way it did. It was so much fun to watch the reveal and bait and switch with him actually work out so well.
I cant wait to see his reactions to the third semester seeing how he talked about the difference between Akechi and Shido and the characters emmotional investments in the antagonist.
Thats all. Not gonna elaborate any further.

It is funny how they gave him codename Crow and then it turns out his 'true' outfit is indeed a crow look a like.
@@Skylancer727 I know about it. The point is they didn't knew exactly how Black Mask looks like and were really accurate
In Japanese, it's also homophonic with "kuro" that means "black."

You right
57:51 Funny thing about Protect (the Confidant ability that caused Makoto to save Joker)...the person doing the protecting takes the exact amount of damage Joker would've taken, except that they automatically endure the hit and can't die from it.

@@burninggames9587It’s anime trope, it’s funny not to be taken seriously
I still think the whole morgana leaving the party scene is terrible. Like who actually wants him around genuinely.
Wish they gave why the principle was needed by Shido, that's one loose end I can't stop fussing about
@@destinydivided8689He probably help finically-he was given the principle job because he help Shido.
