    If the grandmother wanted to prevent the kids from “repeating the cycle”, locking up two teenagers who are just staring puberty in an attic, where they are the only people of the opposite sex they ever see, is probably the worst idea someone could ever think of.

      Tbh that’s still not a good excuse😭 tbh I think that incest stuff might’ve just ran in the family bc no one in their right mind thinks of their family that way even if they do go through puberty together. The grandmother and mother are still in the wrong ofc

      @@hers6694 We are animals and all our morals are social constructs. All we need to come back to our beast and animalistic behavior is a circumstance. No one on their right minds would think of killing their babies own babies to eat them, but people did that during Holodomor. And sex is one of our biological drives, just like hunger, thirst, pooping or sleeping, so in certain circumstances people end up behaving in ways they would never, like in a prison for example, many times even the super straight gangster has a male sexual partner, something he would’ve never even considered if he wasn’t in a circumstance that there are no other options. Under normal circumstances, no (or almost no) pre-teen to teenage siblings would see each other as potential partners, but being locked in an attic for several years with only each others company is no normal circumstance at all. If you decide to be crazy as the grandma and do this experiment to your future children, when you open the attic again after several years, there won’t be just 2 kids, there will be 3 lol.

    This version seems so bad when the book is a real physiological horror and the kids find out the truth super slowly (like they only find out the condition for the mom being accepted if she never had kids or never had them at the very end) and theyre trapped 3 years so they are innocent kids with normal brother/sister bond first but they trap them alone in an attic for 3 years even starving them while they have to raise the little ones and deal with everything else and puberty. The point in the books is the grandparents intense obsession with Christianity and perversion is what leads the family into first the mom developing the desire as a rebellious thing and then the grandkid from basically forced conditions and happens very differently SA involved. Also the grandma is never on their side like this version.it’s a self proclaimed prophecy made possible by the grandparents financial control over everyone and religious paranoia taking everything to the extreme

    Fun Fact: In the prequel novel, the grandmother WAS a First Wave Feminist when she was young - but that was when she DIDN'T hate men (quite the opposite). She only started hating men after getting married, being raped and abused for years on end, and becoming a religious Fundamentalist.
    VC Andrews based this story on one her doctor told her about being locked in the attic as a kid to preserve a family inheritance and a few famous cases of child abuse that were in the news. Carrie and Corey were directly based on a young girl who was locked in a cage without sunlight her whole life. Child abuse was a huge hot button issue in the late 70's and early 80's when the Flowers in the Attic series was written, so there were a bunch of horrific news stories that she drew inspiration from.

    • @KindredKaye
      @KindredKaye 28 дней назад

      The prequel was written by a ghost writer.
      Andrews said that her dr told her a story about helping kids who told him they lived in an attic. It as for pr, and likely was not true.

    The grandmother (Olivia) is not their grandmother, their grandfather (Malcolm) graped his stepmother (Alicia) and got her pregnant. Malcolm and Olivia locked Alicia up til Corrine was born, then she and her son (Christopher) left and Olivia made out she was her baby. When they were older Corrine and Christopher fell in love and ran off together. So the incest and abuse is in the blood. Olivia and Malcolm are equally horrible.

The themes of feeling trapped and inappropriate feelings for family i think stem from her being left depending on family and stuck in a body that doesn't work. It stars from when Olivia meets Malcom (the grandma and grandpa in FITA) also it tells pretty much how all of this started with Corinne and Christopher Sr. And how messed up Malcolm (the Grandpa) really is, how wonderful Olivia (the grandma) can be, and how deranged Corinne actually is. I think i get why the grandma rejected the painting: they're supposed to be hidden and not existant so if she just suddenly came around with this painting done by a bunch of children then it would look sus. And I'm guessing the grandma needs to hide them too cause if the grandpa finds out she was harboring them then her ass woukd be out on the streets as well as all of theirs so they had to distance themselves both from the kids.

    Got excited to see this, as a fellow stoner and Flowers in the Attic enthusiast lmao.
    I was a LITTLE sad y'all watched the Lifetime version of the film, rather than the original as I feel the original film adaptation is a bit truer to the novel than this version. Loved y'all feeling conflicted with the grandmother here, as this film's interpretation of her DOES try to give her some redeeming qualities (tries, but fails, though her and her actress ARE the best part of the Lifetime version of the film). The 1987 version of the film also had V.C Andrews, the author of the novel series, assist in writing for it. Highly recommend getting stoned and giving that one a watch, now that you've seen the lesser Lifetime version! I would super head over to your Patreon for the watch along, can't wait to see more from y'all!

    In actuality, the father of the kids (Christopher) and Corrine were half brother and sister but they were brought up to think they were half uncle and neice. Corrine's mother (Alicia) married Malcolm's father, they had Christopher and then and Malcolm raped her. They then locked a pregnant Alicia in that same room and after the baby was born, she was passed off as belonging to Olivia and Malcolm. Malcolm always had a soft spot for beautiful women; they entranced him somehow, and he had a huge Oedipus complex related to it. Olivia (the grandmother) knew that if he saw the children, he would forget everything and welcome them in. Olivia herself felt love for them at first and forced herself to push it down.
    I haven't read all 5 books in the series, but the ones I have are all really incestuous.
