Low and slow and 4-6 coats is absolutely the way to go. People always scoff when I say it takes me 3 hours to grill chicken thighs. One taste and they stop questioning my motives.
Owwie, gooey chicken thighs & legs...now that's a great summer barbecue meal. Your awesome white barbecue shirt wouldn't last a minute with me lol..Thanks for sharing Rus!
Absolutely love your channel. I grew up in Tomball Texas and we have made chicken like this for years. Don't get me wrong smoke chicken is ok but in my opinion this is the only way to make BBQ chicken. Excellent job
Looking Great Rus. This one my go to for Summer BBQ down to the Beans and YOU MUST HAVE Tater Salad. Thank you for sharing your take on a fantastic BBQ Chicken Dinner. 😋😋😛🍻🍻
That chicken looks fantastic. I think the competition guys pull dark meat at 175 but like you I prefer 185, or even higher with thighs and wing flats. Thanks for the great video and tutorial..
That is one nice pit ...... I didn't know mustard was a non sticker for the grill ..... I do mine almost the same as you do.... Great video Rus .... Now it's time to click on your amazon link and order some things...
Hey Rus! ....that's just how I cook my chicken when I feel like going old school. Highlight of the video was you using the Bob Ross brush lol 😂😂 ....everyone using silicone brush now....LOL 😂. Definitely a fun cook yes indeed. Cheers 🍻
The LSG’s I own are smokers except the Santa Maria, but I do put this over the Santa Maria, mainly because it’s adjustable like a Santa Maria but it has a lid to give it more functionality
@@SmokyRibsBBQ Did you sell the LSG pellet grill? I was looking at it and also the El Patron which cooks like this Pitts & Spits grill here. Thanks for your great video content.
That looked good Rus. It did have that old school look to it. All that was missing was Open Pit or Kraft BBQ sauce and then it would have screamed the 70's LOL (thank God we now have real choices when it comes to sauce).
Nice colorful shirt there Rus! - Perfect summer attire. Dark chicken meat is my fave, and a lot more forgiving as far as donness is concerned. Great example of dual zone cooking for those just learning. - Patience is always a virtue. - The rewards are endless. - Cheers!
I cook my chicken just the opposite. I start out on indirect then finish it off over coals. I'll have to give this a try. Can't beat potato salad n beans for the best BBQ!
Yeah most people do the opposite. I've been doing it this way for a long long time. It really bakes the sauce in and gives a really pronounced flavorful BBQ flavor and plenty of stickiness with just the right amount of char. Thanks for watching!
Love all your content and especially your hotdog (rusty dog) recipe. But I was wondering if your going to do anything else with your grid down, or off the grid, series? I loved the freeze dried prepared eggs and those videos. Hope to see more of that kind of preparedness videos.
Glad you enjoy the content. I had to rethink the off grid stuff because people subbed my channel for cooking videos and not prepping related content but with that said, I'm sure I will use the freeze drier in a few future videos.
This is great! I made this tonight and was a big hit with the family! Going to have to be in the regular rotation. Thank you for this video! Fantastic!
As I said in the video, when the internal temp of the chicken gets around 160 degrees, I move to indirect and start basting with sauce until it slowly climbs up to around 185 degrees internal.
In these days, you can buy a tasty-enough "BBQ-flavored" rotisserie chicken from the grocery store for $5 to $6, so a BBQ chicken from the grill HAS TO BE SPECIAL, right? So, yours is a saucy technique but I'd like to see some more focus on smokiness with some wood chunks. Thanks for this video. I've got some budget packs of leg quarters that are ready for your technique.
I've got plenty of smoked chicken videos on my channel using wood splits and wood chunks on a variety of pits and smokers, but this is the classic grilled BBQ chicken I grew up eating and still my favorite. Thanks for watching
You make one hell of a fine looking finger licking bird buddy 😋! That pits and spits is a chicken making machine! This and the vinegar base chicken reminds me so much of summer with my dad at Mt. Lake. If he wasn't BBQing chicken he was grilling sausage and peppers on a Coleman stove or steak on his little charcoal hibachi grill ❤. Good times.
This looks awesome - great work. BBQ Chicken is such a simple recipe but always hits the spot!
Yes it does! Thanks for watching!
I love the classic ways of grilling. There is a reason it’s a classic and not just forgotten! Thanks for the video.
I totally agree! Thanks for watching!

Need the wife’s potato salad recipe! Great cook! Cheers!
Maybe I can talk her into sharing it. Thanks for watching!

Thanks Damoose! Yes sir, potato salad is a must!
Russ always comes through with good recipes. Thanks Russ!

Thanks Boo! Yeah, it does a pretty good job preventing the sticking. Not perfect but good.
Good video Rus , that makes me want chicken ! BBQ chicken is awesome with beer. THANK YOU FRANK FROM MONTANA.......
Thank you Frank! Chicken goes with beer very well!

Real good cook! Love bbq chicken! One day I will do a video on my tater salad! 😀

LOL at Bob Ross haha! Thanks for watching Stephen!
Really like the grill. Good looking chicken 💯👍
Thanks 👍
Cannot wait to try this!
Looking good 😋
Thanks, I appreciate ya watching!
Dear Gawd, Rus. Yes sir. Dark meat chicken, ample layers of sauce, smoke and fire, tater salad and beans.... YES PLEASE. Great video
Yes sir, good eats for sure!
Russ, you put this grill over the Lone Star Grill?

I gave it to my youngest son, you’re welcome, glad you enjoy the content
dark meat chicken is the best by far!
I totally agree! Thanks Gail!
Do you sell your hats? I love the one your wearing. Nice looking cap.
Lance over at Sleeper BBQ makes the hats for me. You can email him at buellsfurn@comcast.net to order one. There are a few choices
Nice Shirt
That looked good Rus. It did have that old school look to it. All that was missing was Open Pit or Kraft BBQ sauce and then it would have screamed the 70's LOL (thank God we now have real choices when it comes to sauce).
I almost used Kraft just for that very reason, but I decided to go with something I like better haha
Looks good. Drumsticks and thighs. Top notch all the way
Thanks Bo! My favorites for sure!
Dark meat is the best chicken meat
Yes, I totally agree. Has the best flavor and the juiciest

Like the dark red to black color on the skin
Yeah, it had great color as well as the flavor. Thanks for watching!
Nice red weber kettle
It's about shot. Needs a rebuild kit.
Glad to see I'm not the only one out there who prefers dark meat over breast meat Rus!!!
Love BBQ chicken. Awesome
These are the best cooks. Slow, Simple and Savory at the very end! Cheers bud!
Cheers Al and thanks for stopping by!
Save some of that tater salad, im on the way! 🤣
Ok I have dibs on your grill when you want to get rid of it. great video
No plans to sell Mojo, but if I ever do I'll let you know. Thanks!
Wanted to let you know I used this method this weekend and cooked up some of the best BBQ chicken I have ever done. Thanks for sharing this Sir!
Great job!

That's a lot like how we used to do it on a Weber kettle way back when, Rus! And it's still a winner!👍😋
Winner winner chicken dinner haha, thanks Kevin!
Old school cooking. I love it, where did you get the BBQ shirt from
Got it from Pitts and Spitts, thanks for watching!
Potato salad recipe please!
Coming soon!
Your food always looks great ,Rus👍
Thanks so much
Looking good, I will be doing a Tri Tip tonight.
Thanks for watching
Can you do a video on the potato salad recipe?
I may get my wife to show how she makes it if she is willing to share.
that looked good
Thank you!
Tasty.
Very!
Tasty.
Very!
Gonna try it, but how about dropping that tater salad recipe so we can get the full effect....Thanks!
If I can talk my wife into it
@@SmokyRibsBBQ Will keep it between me, you, and the fence post...
Chicken happens to be my favorite summer time protein to grill. It’s not rich like brisket. This chicken looks delicious Rus! Great cook!
Mine too Luis, thanks for checking it out!
I might have missed it but when do you move from direct to indirect heat?
As I said in the video, when the internal temp of the chicken gets around 160 degrees, I move to indirect and start basting with sauce until it slowly climbs up to around 185 degrees internal.
Thanks, looking forward to giving it a try tomorrow.
Care to share momma's tader salad recipe?
Maybe she will give me her recipe or better yet I'll have her do it on video. Maybe

When it comes to BBQ chicken, simplicity reigns supreme. All it needs is salt, pepper, and the BBQ sauce of choice.
