I'm glad you enjoyed I've been listening to that song for decades. Black girl here, who was adopted by hippies in the 70s! There's so much music out there from that time in the 60s and the 70s that is ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING! In all genres of music. I'm so glad I grew up one with a musical family and a huge one at that. My parents had three kids biological adopted three and had 37 foster kids. Of all different nationalities so I heard EVERYTHING!!! You name it I've probably listened to it or have it in my collection.
Felix Pappalardi is the bassist. He produced records for Cream. After that he put mountain together and provided the structure leslie West required to be commercially viable. The album "climbing" is one my favorites. I like every song, particularly: theme from an imaginary western. The song was also a highlight at woodstock, in my opinion. Flowers of evil & one last cold kiss are also great hidden mountain gems. I am old, I have over 500 records, I hope they dont wind up in a dumpster.
I am fast approaching 60....and I am starting to think this is one of the best blues rock songs ever. It hits you like a ton of bricks. It is truly amazing. There are a lot of fantastic covers for this tune.
This hard rock band has been around since the late 60's-70's. They performed at "Woodstock". "Mississippi Queen" is their most famous song using extensive cowbell sounds. Some other songs were "Long Red", "Never In My Life", "To My Friend", "Crossroader", "Nantucket Sleighride" etc.
Les West...my heart..can you even believe, no auto tune, just these guys...oh my GAWD.....you know that I told her, I'd do what I can, to keep her looking pretty....buy her dresses that shine...Love and miss ya, Les.
One of the greatest bands of all TIME All their albums are great they played at Woodstock and I just subscribed my brother lets here more mountain together
I first saw Leslie West in October 1972 with West, Bruce and Laing… I saw him two more times over the next three years with Mountain in the Chicagoland area… Great concerts every time Check out Theme for an Imaginary Western… Their best song
I don't know whether anyone mentioned this far below, but Leslie West showed up to do this song and he was looking for an amp that would break-up (distort) a lot. He was expecting a Hi-Watt, but the amp his sound guy sent him was an old original Acoustic (co. name, not like unplugged) PA (public address, as in an amp for the house [venue]). The Acoustic PA amp had all K88 power tubes. When Leslie plugged in, he couldn't believe how much sweet overdrive (distortion) that amp put out. That is the amp that made Leslie West's signature sound. Today, you just buy effects for everything. Some amp companies actually combine tube (valve) pre-amplifiers with solid state (transistors) power amps, and they over dribe the pre-amp for distortion. This results in a thin, cringy, nasty distortion-- not at all like what happens when power amp tubes distort. You can tell it's a set of K88's breaking up by the monstrously heavy, yet warm and appealing distortion.
The "legend" is that the drummer Corky Laing was playing a gig in Nantucket (hence the sleighride, right?) and there was a blackout. He stared pounding out that awesome drum sequence and was screaming "MISSISSIPPI QUEEN...IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN" while some girl was just dancing it out on the stage. He brought it to Leslie and he did the licks and the lyrics. History, baby.
"Theme from an Imaginary Western"--sung by now gone bassist Felix Papplardi. One of the most moving rock songs I know sung by the superb bassist/vocalist.
The distinctive tone and vocals of this song are famous 50 years later, no end in sight! If you think you know what MOUTIAN sounds like by listening to MISSASIPPI QUEEN , you have only heard half of the range they offer..... Nantucket Sleighride shows off the other lead singer (Felix Pappalardi) Mountain had to offer! To hear Lesli West and Felix Pappalardi sing together you MUST listen to FOR YASGER"S FARM, sweet and hard by turn through the song, very NICE!
Yes and to pay tribute to the song Nantucket Sleighride Live, I found this guitarist doing the theme for the song as leslies tastiest leads tone in that incredible live version and with P90s Enjoy. Goosebumps for guitarist. ruclips.net/video/MNFyjMC4poo/видео.html Live Leslie West Version ruclips.net/video/Oa7pDgF8rrY/видео.html
check the song they do called Traveling in the dark, killer lead guitar, so many great songs by Mountain, enjoy, i saw them many times back in the early 70s, my high school days
They paid homage to Mr. West in a book called 'Jews Who Rock', check it out. Mountain's fourth gig was Woodstock 1969. Leslie was in the studio cutting tracks when Hendrix was, and Jimi was kind enough to come over and sample what had been put down and thought it was great. Leslie was on cloud nine for weeks after that encounter.
Good to see this man really feeling this incredible power & really enjoying it! Those Gibson's never sounded better and with Corky slammin them drums you got all you EVER needed!!! Incredible shit!!!!!
I started playing guitar at 16. Mississippi Queen was one of the first songs I learned how to play. It holds a special place in my heart. The song is just irresistible. I mean what kid didn't want to pound that riff and stroke those leads while getting into his primal man chest voice to proclaim his love for the Mississippi Queen? You don't need supplements to boost testosterone. Just play Mississippi Queen. It's that great.
Mr. Boyd, thank you for playing and reacting to this song. Even though it only peaked at #21 on the charts, everyone listening to music in 1970 remembers this song. It's a beloved song. It's so gratifying to watch you really appreciate this song, and this band. Totally non-sequitur, but when I think of the truly beloved songs of 1970, (not the super famous songs, or the #1 songs, but the beloved songs), I think of Band of Gold by Freda Payne. Peaked at #3, but, again, everyone who lived during that era loves this song.
Mountian [band] was primarily southern rock, like Allman brothers, Leonard skynard, etc..Most of the southern rock/blues was derived [most of it] from black southern blues players !! they were/are the roots o0f all of this genre/style of music !! Another band to check out, if you have not already is "Grand Funk Railroad" they were from this era & leaned more toward rock music, but no one was more soulful/blues singing than Mark Farner, singer for Grand Funk !!
Definitely 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥! Leslie West had a very good voice but his guitar skills were magnificent!!!! I believe to me this is the best Rock n Roll song ever. 1970 was a terrific yr for music.
I’m 55 and this song is older the me, I think it is underrated. I do know it made Woodstock music festival. I heard this song many times by different singers. Thanks for sharing. The Mississippi queen was a steam powered river paddle boat. There is a paddle boat that is called the Mississippi queen in New Orleans, I think it’s the fifth boat to carry the name. The original song had a lot more lyrics.
Most of the great blues rock bands were actually British but Mountain and a few others from the USA were on par with these. Try Nantucket Sleighride which was actually the theme tune for the most popular pollical programme in the UK during the 80s - Weekend World!
I saw Mountain at the Fillmore East in NYC around 1970. I had third row center & I was completely blown away from their talent/sound. Very loud, but great...
Supposedly the loudest group in the world at the time. I saw them in London and when Felix played certain notes on the bass guitar you could feel your stomach move in and out with the sound waves.
I love that the lead singer is not a pretty rock star. His voice and guitar are amazing. He is charismatic. His personality oozes from his playing and singing.
I saw them in 69, age 13, when Mountain Climbing came out, and Mississippi Queen was a huge hit. Saw them in 70 at Strawberry Fields, MoSport Raceway, in Ontario. Every member became famous, but especially Felix Pappalardi.
Yeah, this is one of those songs you were waiting for to come along all your life... Real Rock n Roll....when Rock wasn't always pretty. ;) Check out the studio version. Also, "Rumble" by Link Wray - another classic you might know, but don't know you know. Awesome reaction.
I was fortunate enough to grow up in a time when this was standard issue in the burbs. Yes, we were the kids that had the garage band with the loud guitar. I still play and have been thinking about squeezing this in a set list.
Dreams of Milk and Honey from their LP Flowers of Evil is my favorite track by Mountain together with Stormy Monday (the long live recording). The playing of Leslie West (guitar) and Felix Pappalardi (bass) and how they support each other is absolutely amazing. Surprised nobody else mention these two songs? Many different versions of Milk and Honey but the one on Flowers of Evil is outstanding. It starts at 8:55.......before it's a guitar solo. ruclips.net/video/wQBQFX7rAF8/видео.html ruclips.net/video/0RsXs49K3lU/видео.html
I also believe that Dreams of Milk and Honey is a masterpiece! I wore out the album and replaced it with a CD. It is the first time I had ever heard the bass take part of the lead in a song. Also Leslie's Roll over Beethoven was a great song on that album.
Haha, dude this is so great. Awesome to share this moment and live the “first time hearing Mississippi Queen” moment vicariously through you. Pretty sure everyone makes the faces you made. Make up for lost time brother! Better late than never. Leslie was the shit. Check out Theme from Imaginary Western (Woodstock version). Not a Mountain original but they did it so well…
I saw them in London. The bass was so loud you could feel your stomach move when certain notes were played. No wonder Felix had hearing problems later in life
Great observation about BB King. The guitar player, West, lays back into those vocals just like BB and hits those simple blues solos in a similar way. I saw BB King several times in concerts. Very similar vibe. Good pull.
I have said the same thing ,it's a good thing they didn't have to go in front of Simon and be a super model front singer back then . Otherwise we may have all missed out on Mississippi Queen.
Imagine a 16-year-old boy going to see these guys and expecting to see a thin man on guitar what I saw was a mountain of a man not just a great guitar player but had a voice that came from the bottom of his soul
You have missed all the fun! But now you're into it and getting your face melted. Mountain is a legendary band. Lots of rock and roll history around them as a band and members!
Leslie West is Mountain. What a power band they were, a fantastic lineup, and sadly not in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame. Leslie has some of the best rock riffs of all time. Big Sunn Coliseum Pa heads and cabs, a guitar cord, and a 1954 Gibson Les Paul Jr with a single p-90 pickup. Not a lot of gear to get that great sound.
Yes! S Mountain, very first concert, I was 16, Black Sabbath opened for them. All 3 were in a class of their own. DO NOT FORGET WEST, BRUCE AND LAING, ADD THE GENIUS JACK BRUCE, SO GOOD. MAKE SURE YOU GET FLOWERS OF EVIL TOO.
Mississippi Queen is a river boat. Ran from New Orleans to Vicksburg and Naches and on up the Mississippi northwards.
Vicksburg is in Mississippi. And my uncle Kevin did Leslie's guitars for a while on the road. Leslie's guitars were unreal.
The tone of that Les Paul Jr is insane!!!
Hearing him speak a few times he sounds like the nicest guy too. I may be reading him wrong but he sounds like such a cool guy. May he RIP.
I was 18 when this came out like a storm. Thanks for your respectful post of this rock classic. Salute to you as well.
Leslie West was a genius! May he rest in peace!
I'm glad you enjoyed I've been listening to that song for decades. Black girl here, who was adopted by hippies in the 70s! I did not know that!! Thanks!!
Fortunately, a whole bunch of young kids are turning on to vinyl. Your record collection will be a gold mine for someone. Treat it as such 👍
West was with a NYC group called the Vagrants before Mountain.
My favorite song back in the day. I loved the blues, rock fusion. To this day at 67 I will rock this at full volume
Right kind of like Nazareth hair of the dog album. Always loud
I've been hearing this song all my life and I love it still. I'm 52.
I'm almost 70 & still sing it out love Mountain back then & now
I am fast approaching 60....and I am starting to think this is one of the best blues rock songs ever. It hits you like a ton of bricks. It is truly amazing. There are a lot of fantastic covers for this tune.
total badass it don't get better than that pure fire
From one Boyd to another, this song never gets old…even after 50 years.
You're right - this song is so wild and so heavy and has so much soul - it is perfection! RIP Leslie West

One of the most EPIC ROCKERS of all time! Leslie West on guitar and vocals (RIP), Corky Laing on drums.
"This is one of the greatest things I've ever heard in my life" Couldn't agree more
Onw of my favorite song!! Who doesn't love Mr West!!! Dude was a guitar master with a strong voice. ❤
Love your expression while listening to this song first time. I have to say I had the same reaction in 1970.
Hail Leslie West, a truly staggering vocal performance.
Stunning performance
Love it. Love your response to some awesome music Mr. Boyd.
Yeah, Leslie West et al were *AWESOME.*
One of the greatest bands of all TIME All their albums are great they played at Woodstock and I just subscribed my brother lets here more mountain together
Mississippi Queen is a dancer, she’s his old lady man.
Music was blessed by these brilliant superstars.
Say Hey MLB--Loved your reaction. Leslie West's singing on the studio track is even better. I saw Mountain numerous times and they ROCKED.
from the first time you here this song you say Damm! what a great song, Leslie West masterfully skillful powerful guitarist.
You chose an amazing version to react to! Leslie West was a beast!
I first saw Leslie West in October 1972 with West, Bruce and Laing… I saw him two more times over the next three years with Mountain in the Chicagoland area… Great concerts every time
Check out Theme for an Imaginary Western… Their best song
An absolute Masterpiece. Excellent reaction!!! Just pure talent, all around.
As usual a great video, Mr. Boyd! Fantastic song, always on my playlist since ages. Great voice, nice guitar work. My kind of music.

Lead Singer of Foo Fighter's did a Tribute to Mountain - Mississippi Queen.
Check out Mountain live at Woodstock.

This is one of my all time favs! I'd probably call it a blues rocker... kind of dirty and swampy.
Mountian [band] was primarily southern rock, like Allman brothers, Leonard skynard, etc..Most of the southern rock/blues was derived [most of it] from black southern blues players !! they were/are the roots o0f all of this genre/style of music !! Great reaction to a great band!
Saw them 5x, You needed cotton in your ears they were so loud. RIP Lesley West one of the most underrated guitarist ever.
Yep, what a song!
Maybe one of the best Rock N Roll anthems best guitar riffs power house killer songs ever! Leslie West was an animal ❤
Hell yeah! You got the stank face during the fills and solo. Love it!
You cannot NOT love this!!!!
Great to see others react as strongly to this song. Its just fantastic.
Definitely 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥! Leslie West had a very good voice but his guitar skills were magnificent!!!! I believe to me this is the best Rock n Roll song ever. 1970 was a terrific yr for music.
MRLBOYD is the coolest. Really enjoy your videos.
Absolutely killing it!

This is one of the best classic Rock songs of all-time ❤❤❤
I’m a 55 year old Black
man and ain’t no way in hell these “first time hearing this song” people actually exist.
"We have the lyrics pulled up - just in case we need them, guys!" Oh yeah, you're gonna need 'em!😂
I had the great experience of seeing Mtn in concert when I was 16!

right at the 20 second mark i wanted to scream at my screen as if you could hear me and say "right?!!!! :)" hahaha. rock on dude!
If you liked this version, you will LOVE the studio version!
"NEVER IN MY LIFE" is every bit as good as MS Queen. Mountain had four albums
Great reaction!! 😊 Thank you
I grew up in the sixties, high school in the 70’s. The BEST time for music. ❤
Vicksburg is on the Mississippi river west of Jackson MS
This song is set on my alarm clock
Thanks 👍 excellent forgotten band!
Yeah, this is one of those songs you were waiting for to come along all your life...
Real Rock n Roll....when Rock wasn't always pretty. ;)

Great observation about BB King. The guitar player, West, lays back into those vocals just like BB and hits those simple blues solos in a similar way. I saw BB King several times in concerts. Very similar vibe. Good pull.
Leslie West was indeed a "mountain" of a man
R&R rarely gets this stanky or badass! Good to watch your reaction to a first listen of this elite band's most known song...
I don't think I have EVER seen you groove to a song so much
I have said the same thing ,it's a good thing they didn't have to go in front of Simon and be a super model front singer back then . Otherwise we may have all missed out on Mississippi Queen.
Blow out many Jensen car speakers in the day!
Imagine a 16-year-old boy going to see these guys and expecting to see a thin man on guitar what I saw was a mountain of a man not just a great guitar player but had a voice that came from the bottom of his soul
leslie west was from Long Island NY- HAHAHA
You have missed all the fun! But now you're into it and getting your face melted. Mountain is a legendary band. Lots of rock and roll history around them as a band and members!
Leslie Weinstein a nice Jewish boy from Brooklyn/Long Island 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I felt the same way when I heard this for the first time back in 1970, damn it’s a long time ago, 53 yrs. 😢
Leslie West is Mountain. What a power band they were, a fantastic lineup, and sadly

All 3 were in a class of their own. DO NOT FORGET WEST, BRUCE AND LAING, ADD THE GENIUS JACK BRUCE, SO GOOD.
MAKE SURE YOU GET FLOWERS OF EVIL TOO.
Lived to be 75
2:40 That's Vicksburg, Mississippi. Sounds like it could also be Pittsburgh, as in Pittsburgh Landing, Mississippi.
Every time I listen to this, my neighbors do too !!!
