Omg yes, as someone suffering from debilitating borderline bipolar disorder. I definitely feel emotionally different from beginning to middle to end of whatever im doing

LA Fresh Life One of Chicago's most famous landmarks is Glessner House, an H.H.Richardson mansion that was built on the near South Side for Frances Glessner Lee's father, who started the company that became International Harvester. Interestingly, there is in the Art Institute of Chicago, a famous collection of dioramas, the Thorne Rooms, which are meticulously detailed rooms depicting interiors from different historical periods and countries. These were all crafted between 1934 and 1940. This is right before Chicago-native Lee began crafting her 'nutshells'. One has to wonder if she knew of the Thorne Rooms, and if they were in any way an inspiration.
I took a forensic science class in high school and previous students created their own dioramas just like this. The next classes created stories and did all the measurements to try and solve the crime. Very interesting assignment and one of the more memorable classes I took for sure.
*HERE’S EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED IN THIS CASE* Three Room Dwelling: -The husband first shot his wife, leaving the stain in front of her head. - He then walked to the baby’s room and shot the baby, leaving the stain behind it. - He shoots himself, but doesn’t die. - After shooting himself, he leaves the mysterious stain on the baby’s floor. - He steadies himself using the chair in the room, which is why it’s tipped over. (The chair is blurred) - He grips his wound to try and prevent leaving a bloodstain and leaves the room. Gripping the wound leaves blood on his hand. - In the dining room, he stops to take a break and releases his grip, leaving the stain on the ground there. Alternatively, he shoots himself again. - He lets the blood drip as he enters his own room, leaving the footprints. - He loses his footing again and grips the rocking chair, tipping it over and leaving the cluster of prints suggesting he stumbled. - He shoots himself through the head and falls on the bed, which leaves the massive stain across it and brings the blanket down with him. - The two larger stains on his legs suggest he’d shot himself there. Once when he was in the baby’s room, the second time may have been in the dining room. - The crime had to have taken place after the milkman arrived, since the bottles are on the porch and he would have been disturbed by the gunshots. - Or maybe the shots were fired during his arrival, and after placing the bottles he heard the gunshot and stumbled backward, which toppled the blocks that were on the porch. - However we don’t know where the weapon went or the explanation for the smaller stains across the man’s back. Kitchen: - Before leaving for work, the husband knocks his wife out using an object in the room (likely rolling pin or iron) - Since the wife had been holding an ice cube tray, we can make a rough guess as to when the crime happened. The tray doesn’t appear to have any ice in it, so it is either empty or melted. If it’s melted, it happened father back. Depending on when the husband leaves for work, we can assume whether or not he was in the house at the time. (Or maybe it was the heat from the stoves?) - The husband jams the door shut with the paper. The knife near the door could have been used for this. - He turns the stove on and leaves through a window, leaving the tablecloth crooked. - The wife’s cheeks look a little red. It may be makeup, but it could also suggest she suffocated. Edit: Alright, lets try explaining three room dwelling as a murder by an intruder - The intruder shoots the wife and runs to the baby’s room before the husband can react. He then shoots the baby. (He may have left the husband alive since he only had a vendetta against one of the two in the couple - he hates the husband so he shoots the the people he loves most, or he hates the wife so he kills her and her child. Not sure why he wouldn’t kill the husband in that last one, though. Maybe he just didn’t see him under the covers in his rush..?) - The husband follows the sound of the gunshot and fights the intruder. This is where the first shot into his leg is fired, where the chair is tipped over, and where the extra bullet ends up on the floor. It may also be where the bloody prints are left on his back. - The husband realizes he doesn’t have a chance here and grips his leg while running (or doing his best to run) back to his room. - Another shot into his leg is fired in the kitchen. - Once they approach the bedroom, there’s another scuffle that tips the second chair and leaves all the prints. - The husband either goes right to reach the phone or left to get a weapon in a drawer (assuming he has one). - If he goes right, the killer shoots him and wraps him in the blanket to put him back in the bed (an attempt at a red herring, maybe?). The husband rolls out of the bed due to the dead weight, which leaves the bloodstain across the sheets (however it’s a bit too big to have resulted by rolling over). Alternatively, the intruder knocks the husband out by forcing him against the chair. Then he wraps him in the blanket and shoots him while he‘s in the bed. He still rolls over, but the stain is now caused more by the shot itself than by a trail. - If he goes left for a weapon (a more likely explanation), he is shot by the intruder there. He falls on the bed, leaving the stain. The blanket may have been left by him earlier as he got out of bed in a panic. - Our milkman explanation still works, but the disappearing weapon and back prints are explained.
Very questionable deduction. Especially the first one you pointed out, the three room dwelling. I would like to question the others too but im lazy to type and the three room dweling has so much evidence so imma point this one only. Remember, if the husband did shot her, why is the gunshell located between the dresser and the toppled rocking chair? The blood splash was facing the telephone, indicating that she was facing the telephone or using the telephone when she was shot. You can see her position because of the bloodsplash, and the telephone shows that it was being used. Probabbly she was phoning 911. Also, the blood marks on the pajamas indicates that someone with bloodied hands dragged him. The weapon might be the bloodied egg beater and the bloodied spoon in the kitchen, on the bowl that was used to kill the husband That makes your deduction very questionable. It doesnt add up anything at all. Peace sissy!

All of them are. You'll see these in movies constantly and not even know. Back to the Future had minis. So did Titanic, when the water burst through the hallway and some dining room scenes. The hall was about waist high to an adult, because water is its own scale. And any smaller, would make that obvious...
I agree with the commenter above. L.A. Noire is a great video game to play if you like solving mysteries, only you play as a cop who gets promoted to different positions as the cases get harder. Not only will it test your observation skills, but there are also times where you interrogate both the suspect, the victim or the bystander to come up with the conclusion to the case. As you progress into the game, you’ll also get to experience the backstory of the cop you play as :D There’s a playable VR version to the game if that’s what you’re looking for.
The solutions are not to be found solely within the dioramas. They are intended as teaching sides so that novice detectives learn how to spot details and gather clues that will then be used in the full investigation. The solutions to the actual incidents relied on using the clues in conjunction with witness statements, detective work, etc. The solutions cannot be made public as that would invalidate the dioramas usefulness as training tools.
@@bromptondevice7685 lol you literally just restated; there is no solution, these are merely tools for observing the right things. But with bigger words. SHE KNOWS WHAT IT MEANS.
Me: hear the words “where the milkman stopped by.” Also me: IT WAS HIM, IT WAS THE MILKMAN. despite not even knowing if someone had died or been killed. The milkman is just sus
@@hehewat6964 They wouldn't just include a milk man and point it out for no reason, the milk man has something to do with this but these were designed to have no solution
hehewat I figured out something in the kitchen, if you look at the woman closely, you see an ice tray. If you searched for more pictures of the scene, you see a puddle of water next to her. Could she have slipped on the ice? You can also tell that she has been dead for quite an while considering all the ice have melted
There are right answers. The problem is that these are still used for training so the answers of "what happened?" are kept secret by the Medical Examiner. You can only learn the answers by becoming the Medical Examiner, that, or by enrolling in a class done in collaboration with Medical Examiner to use the Nutshells as learning aids.
One Halloween, my family dressed up as Clue Characters. At our party, my little cousin, whose name is Scarlett, walked into our kitchen and picked up a knife. Scarlett, in the kitchen, with the knife.
As a miniature builder and lover this is an amazing and exciting opportunity to have a window into a moment of time that otherwise might be forgotten. The woman who designed this exercise is brilliant, to use 1:12 scale to make the point that every small detail has a very large impact on the bigger picture. And can in fact be the detail that can solve a problematic case.
I remember watching the episode of CSI Las Vegas where the murderer made these and left them at the crime scene along with the real life murder. That’s my favourite episode.
TheRisky9 interesting! Anddd also kinda said to me, i hate stories that don't have a concrete ending lol. I'm the kind who needs closure lol. I was leaning towards someone trying to stage her murder as a suicide and somehow escaped through a window and jarred it, perhaps even her own husband...i watch too much tv lol.
(THIS ISN’T HATE) As it may scare some people, I find it fascinating how intercut these miniatures are. The tiny potatoes to the little rooms covered in tiny little details. If I received one of these I’d be great full to train my eye to see things and notice things better.
As an artist I am completely in awe of the details and intricate creation of these little pieces of art masterpieces. This woman was far beyond her time she was an artistic genius.
This reminded me of John Mulaney’s joke about cops and DNA 50-100 years ago “hey chief, there’s blood all over the crime scene”.... “Disgusting, mop it up” AHAHAHAH
Ooo imagine if you could get a VR experience in these doll houses. That would be hella creepy but also a fun way of learning how to find these smaller details.
Just Ash what I think happened was that the father got enraged when he found out the wife cheated on him with the milk man resulting in him killing his baby, his wife and then himself.. that's what I think
The milkman breaks in, goes into the babies room, kills the baby but makes more noise than anticipated, The dad then goes into the baby room and gets stabbed there explaining the pool of blood and the stains going into the parents room, wife is a heavy sleeper and sleeps through it all including her own murder
I think that there was poison in the milk which is why there were empty bottles outside the door, as well as why there's a pool of blood with no footprints because everyone was coughing up blood
Years ago I read an article in "The Boston Globe" on the nutshell case studies. The first line was "Barbie is dead and Ken did it". I had lived in Maryland in the '90s and had known about the dioramas when they were housed in Maryland ME's office.
Lore was originally a very popular podcast, now turned into an anthology tv series on Amazon. It's pretty spooky and weird with the original podcaster narrating some parts of the story
4:55 I’m just guessing but what if the door was stuffed with newspaper so no air could get in or our. When she turned on the gas burner she slowly killed her self, and I’m guessing the husband stuffed it with newspaper
But there's clear no sign of she trying to struggle to get out. If she really want to get out. She might have used anything to get out. Then I guess the husband is more suspicious. You can actually make the newspaper like it is stuffed when closing the door
HA! I got to go on a private tour of Frances Glessner's family home in Chicago last week and they talked about this! I'm so excited that this is getting out there!

The hall was about waist high to an adult, because water is its own scale. And any smaller, would make that obvious...
There's a whole magazine about this: Miniature Collector.
They are really detailed

It's called L.A Noire
I agree with the commenter above. L.A. Noire is a great video game to play if you like solving mysteries, only you play as a cop who gets promoted to different positions as the cases get harder. Not only will it test your observation skills, but there are also times where you interrogate both the suspect, the victim or the bystander to come up with the conclusion to the case. As you progress into the game, you’ll also get to experience the backstory of the cop you play as :D There’s a playable VR version to the game if that’s what you’re looking for.

Vox: There’s no solution, these are merely tools for observing the right things :)
Me: but what is the aNsWeRrRr
The solutions are not to be found solely within the dioramas. They are intended as teaching sides so that novice detectives learn how to spot details and gather clues that will then be used in the full investigation. The solutions to the actual incidents relied on using the clues in conjunction with witness statements, detective work, etc.
The solutions cannot be made public as that would invalidate the dioramas usefulness as training tools.
Instructor: This test was just to see how you would come up with an answer.
Student: Yeah but what's the ANSWER?
@@bromptondevice7685 lol you literally just restated; there is no solution, these are merely tools for observing the right things. But with bigger words. SHE KNOWS WHAT IT MEANS.
@@Tactiducky so why did she ask what the answer was? Unless she replies, we will never know, just like the dioramas.

hehewat I figured out something in the kitchen, if you look at the woman closely, you see an ice tray. If you searched for more pictures of the scene, you see a puddle of water next to her. Could she have slipped on the ice? You can also tell that she has been dead for quite an while considering all the ice have melted
Poor milkman.
The ending is incredibly frustrating. It like when your teacher used to tell you before a test that "there are no right or wrong answers".
That must be one of the best endings to a Vox video ever.

As a miniature builder and lover this is an amazing and exciting opportunity to have a window into a moment of time that otherwise might be forgotten. The woman who designed this exercise is brilliant, to use 1:12 scale to make the point that every small detail has a very large impact on the bigger picture. And can in fact be the detail that can solve a problematic case.

i still need answers! who killed the little family?!
Just Ash what I think happened was that the father got enraged when he found out the wife cheated on him with the milk man resulting in him killing his baby, his wife and then himself.. that's what I think
MamaWantsWaffles To me it looks like the man was stabbed and pushed off his bed.
I think it has to do with the milkman or something

The Ducky Ninja
But how? The door and window was locked so how did the husband do that from the outside?
Hmm Carbon Dioxide Poisoning. thats possible too.
@@dusterdude238 but with a room that big, it would take ages. Inside a coffin, you could last 24 hours.
But there's clear no sign of she trying to struggle to get out. If she really want to get out. She might have used anything to get out.
