OMG the first time this happened to me was probably 17 or 18 years ago. I was fairly new as a pro gardener. I was planting a 2 gallon grafted rose. So I dug a hole the same depth as the pot and about 3x as wide. I probably removed about 10ish gallons of soil. I added the 2 gallon rose, about 3-4 gallons of compost (this was before I knew not to amend the planting hole) and all of the original soil. Then I had to get another bag of compost to bring the hole level! Why???? Someone once told me it has to do with the phases of the moon, like high and low tides. They claimed that the moon's gravity pulls on the water in the soil. Which sounds insane. Yet I have yet to hear of anything else that explains it in a less crazy way. One winter, when I have down time, I might take the time to research it. 😆
Thanks! She totally is 🥰 she makes a few cameo appearances in videos. "Spring clean up for pollinators" that I posted a little over a year ago, she's sitting beside me for the entire conclusion. And she'll make an adorable appearance in a weed video on Black Medic that will hopefully post in a few weeks.
It's not necessary to root wash all transplants. I wouldn't waste the time on annuals. But consider root washing perennials, definitely root wash if they are root bound (I have a whole video about that, I think it's called "Root Bound Revival"), and always root wash woody trees and shrubs. Check for potential problems and prune them out before they become problems.
lol the soil amount and the hole, I felt that so much. Every single time I’m like “why is there not enough?!” Then “why is there so much leftover?!” 😂

Is it safe to say that you can root wash all transplants? Or are there some that don't want their roots exposed...?
