When I was young I used to buy blank journals from the store and pretend to write ages in them. Even draw in the linking panel. I wanted to be able to write Descriptive Books so bad. Although I wasn't aware of the rules and would often write in structures and things. I also both numbered and named them, and I think I wrote like seven or eight.
I’ve done the same! I had an obsession with buying blank journals and notebooks. This series inspired me to write stories and make up fictional worlds and stories.
I just now noticed this and it's kind of irrelevant, but the color of the domes is also shown by their linking books. The flames (or whatever they are) when the image is revealed will be the color of their corresponding fire marble. That's a nice touch.
Catherine knows how to write ages thanks to Ti'ana and Atrus' teachings. Because of this she can see the indications in the prison book. If you knew how to find the code then you could see the difference as well, but it's best to just go with Catherine's analysis. If you were to check the other fire dome books in Gehn's 233'rd age you would see that Catherine has ripped out the links intentionally so that Gehn's followers could not find us or her if things did not work out.
Robyn's score is timed so well with Catherine's reaction that "I" captured Gehn. It added an element of excitement and a feeling that I was really under pressure to do everything else quickly!
Well, it felt like a long series to me anyway. :-) But it's true it's shorter than many other Let's Plays, probably because there's so little dialog. And despite all the talk about the next video being the last one, there will be two more "bonus" videos with the bad endings (I know most of those are already on RUclips in one form or another, but I figured I'd add them anyway).
@SJothra In this case, the fact that the Moiety cracked the dome code was in Catherine's journal. She also conjectured there that the blatant purpose of the book domes was meant to trap them, and I suppose that the cage we found in the 233rd Age confirms this.
You actually cannot open Cathrine’s cell without trapping Gehn. The RNG doesn’t program until you hit the ornament so the game won’t open Catherine’s cell at all until it’s programmed by the ornament.
@SJothra Catherine and the Moiety used the domes to power their book to Tay the first time they used it. The Moiety had cracked the code by brute force, and I suppose Gehn hadn't changed it since then hoping to lure Catherine or the Moiety into the trap (the cage in his office on the 233rd Age).
When I read The Book of Ti’ana I didn’t find her at fault for the fall of D’ni. I seem to remember Veovis’ xenophobia combined with A’Gaeris’ greed or hate causing it, using Anna as an excuse.
Yeah, Ti'ana's "mistake" was advocating that Veovis be given leniency on account of the fact that he had originally been convicted for a crime he didn’t commit.
What does Catherine pull before leaving the elevator? I just noticed she does that. I'm assuming she breaks the elevator mechanism to prevent the player from attempting to explore the prison cell, but I can't spot what's different before and after.
Dilandau3000 you are very good in trying to reason everything, so I was wondering how you reason the following: Prison Island is drifted far away, and they can't connect with any trains ( maglevs), despite the fact these trains have cables which can be extended over time. But how did Ghen manage to have a pipeline between the big dome and the small down on Prison Island, which is clearly less flexible / extendable than the maglev cables? Or should we simply consider it a rare game-mistake? :-D
Maybe the small dome on prison island isn't connected to the main fire gems system? Yes, it looks like it is from the primary power generator, but we've seen that Gehn has figured out a smaller power generation.
You know, those book domes sure seem dangerous to me. Think about it: to get inside you have to let the cover close over you, which means bending over lest it smash your head in. Getting out is risky as well: if you're standing too far forward, the inner barrier might crush your feet.
I would guess she could see he was trapped because she new the code..Thats how i would suspect she knew it was a prison book in the first place..Maybe something else in the book is altered after someone is captured within the age.
Hey! When returning to Prison Island the cage bars are up (6:47). Did you not lower them after Ghen linked and you were released? Or am I seeing things?
Question: (I can't any more figure it out myself because my computers are all too new to support Riven). Suppose that upon the first arrival to the 233rd age, I immediately did the trap book swap thing with Gehn, and I was then outside of the cage. Only then did I go to the prison age and see the lock. Now, having to return to the 233rd age to ascertain what the combination was, would I be stuck in the cage and unable to get back to his bedroom, or would I still come in outside of the cage?
I know I’m seven years behind this comment, but if you’re still active you’ll get this reply notification. You have actually always been able to play Riven on Windows- even on newer operating systems. Windows has something called compatibility mode- where you’re able to set the operating system back to whatever system you wish to run it under. For instance, I can boot up my system in Vista or even XP if I wanted to. You can look up tutorials on how to do that. Conversely, you can buy the whole series on Steam now for around 80 bucks and they will all run without much, if any, system tweaking. And to answer your question, he does not use the book inside the cage so the book will always remain outside of the cage and therefore when you are brought out, you will always be outside of the cage.
@Dilandau: It is long, and besides, it's good. We all have our favorites. Kiko does good stuff, but the games he plays are not my interest. I like these subtle things like the Myst series more than Doom, Lands of Lore, Spelunky and whatever else.
When you open the linking book, the dome resets. It’s a protective measure- that’s why you have to reopen the dome. That’s what I assume you’re talking about
I now realize there is a whole generation of USA people that cannot enjoy these games since they cannot read cursive. Well the pendulum swings as it wills.
Cursive is still taught in school so I have no idea what you’re talking about. Some may not know it in general because they didn’t think it was necessary to maintain such knowledge. But it’s still taught and you can easily find tutorials on how to read cursive if you’re not a native speaker.

That is adorable.

I am “writing an age” with hammer editor, a map maker for the source engine.
"The portal combination is in my journal. Good luck."
We've already OPENED the portal.
Love that response for some reason. I lolled.
I love your knowledge and passion for the lore here. I adore this series with all my heart, nice to see you divulge all of it to the viewer.
I just now noticed this and it's kind of irrelevant, but the color of the domes is also shown by their linking books. The flames (or whatever they are) when the image is revealed will be the color of their corresponding fire marble. That's a nice touch.
Wow. Cath looks like she's younger than her sons...

"How does she know that Ghen's in there?"
Probably because he's waving his fist in anger and defeat

You have to open the cage to be able to go back to Riven. You will link in to the same spot but the cage will be open.
What happens if you actually manage to guess the combination for the cage on the prison Island and freeing catherine without trapping Gehn?

"Catherine stole my cursor and ran off! D:"
I didn't exactly finish this game in 5 hours (which is what 30 RUclips videos amounts to, give or take) the first time I played it either. :-)

she breaks the wires that operate the little sound making locking mechanism.
@@cactusc9519 that's what I thought, but I still think it looks like the wires* are intact
*wires, not writers (edited)

Probably didn’t want Catherine’s followers saving her or having ready access to break her out en masse very easily
The building on Prison Island was originally Gehn's private quarters; he probably didn't build a Mag-Lev system in order to restrict access.
Thank you so much for reading the journals...

@danielcdawson Stupid evil maniacs never think about OSHA compliance. :P
Hey! When returning to Prison Island the cage bars are up (6:47). Did you not lower them after Ghen linked and you were released? Or am I seeing things?
Dilandau, are you considering doing another let's play of any of the other myst games?
Ha! You actually dipped into a British accent after talking to Cathrine. She really does have a lovely voice, doesn't she?
See, she calls it Temple Island, not Dome Island...
You should make a video series of reading The book of Atrus and The book of Ti'ana :D
the actress who played catherine (not the voice) has sadly passed away :(
Nathaniel Elmer really, that sad :(
Oh so sad :(
:(
she is my auntie 🥰
Wanted to go up and explore Catherines prison but she pulled the wires out...
Ok, I see. The return books will not work until the cage is open; I thiought one could also access them from outside the cage.
Thanks :)

note that afther you rescued Chatrine you cant go too the other island

damn..Cath is hot!
How about a lets play RealMyst Masterpiece sir?
catherine closes it somehow when you free her, though.
Closes what?

You can press space and the animation will skip.
He doesn't want to, it would break immersion.
I wish they would reboot these Or rerealse them for the Xbox one
They have the whole series on Steam and they will all run on pretty much any computer
@danielcdawson Luckily, in this world it is impossible to stand so you face these perils. Way to go, movement-restrictions!
