GOOD NEWS - Battletoads is in Rare Replay with a rewind feature! It lets you go back a few seconds at any time in your playthrough. ALSO, there's an infinite turbo tunnel... If that's your thing.
Balrog you probably see me commenting a lot on your videos. I can't sing your praises enough. I enjoy the cheesy humour, I love the game choices and I also think that you are by far one of the most in depth reviewers on RUclips. You are the best Hidden Blocker and deserve tonnes more subscribers. Much love dude.
vDom My list of Hidden Block Reviewers: 1) Balrog/ Caddy [can't decide; both equal fav's of mine. Both are very funny, but one is more informative, one is funnier. GAH!!!] 3) Brutalmoose [good, but not great] 4) SpaceHamster [too much like PBG] 5) Jimmy (NintendoFanFTW) [sorry, but I find him _really_ boring, except for his "mute reviews" oddly enough] 6) Yungtown [I don't understand/know what he makes. I liked the training video and his appearance in that SmashMasterShow video]
vDom For whatever reason, I find it somewhat embarrasing that I like Spacehamster, since it feels a bit mindless to me. I have no idea why I am embarresed, but I do enjoy Spacehamster, I just feel he isn't the most original Hidden Block reviewer. I am subbed to all of them except Yungtown and _possibly_ Jimmy (i forget).
There's a warp on level 3 which skips that surfing level... Then there's a warp on snakes and the snow level... Basically, you can skip a lot of the game. Still impossible to beat
smawzyv He didn’t really play the game normally so it makes sense that his opinion on it would be so warped. Anyone who’s played it legitimately knows how hard those levels are
My voice layered over itself that many times is just... symphonic. Great video man! As an employee of GameStop I kinda' hate this game already, but now I can really hate it on a... tangentially personal level. Hurray~
@8:00 In level 7 you can also fly at the bottom of the screen and only avoid the falling rockets (because the upward ones won't hit you there for some reason)
Beat this game as a kid (8 years old i think) with no cheats, even found all warp zones which made it easier (didn't mention that Balog) but once i beat it like that i made it trough all the levels as well. Still it is a really hard game, you NEED to memorize levels and in the racing like levels it comes to muscle memory. Anyway anyone looking for a good challenge play it, it's one of my favorite NES games for sure and i think most people just give up too fast on it.
I actually find this game amazing, sure its brutal. But the music just says. HEY, WHERE DO YOU THINK YOUR GOING? YOU ARE FINISHING THIS GAME! Hell, Battletoads was in Shovel Knight and my god it was awesome.
that was probably the definitive review of Battletoads, good job :) (also, I beat the game with no cheats and I still love the game even though it's kinda broken)
Thanks for showing us all the awesomeness that is Battletoads. I never will attempt to play it though, too bad in this day and age they can't just "patch" a digital version so everyone could enjoy it the way it "should" be.
I have a few questions about the turbo tunnel. 1) If you hold down/up, do you fall off the platform and die, or just stay in one place? 2) Can I beat it if I have a reaction time of under 0.150?
Balrog you were one of the first channels I started watching you and BrutalMoose are my favorite and your reviews are some of the best on Nintendo and retro games keep making great content like this P.S. I'd love for u to respond to this
Yep. Wookey Hole. Somewhere up in Somerset. Still need to go visit that place. (Considering I actually live here in the UK). It's a set of Caves with other attractions added.
+The Side Quest Gamer The Famicom version has five continues, not unlimited. It, and the euro-version were relased some time later so they're much more polished than the US-version. Also the difficulty is toned down a bit, not just by adding continues, but with the level design as well.
Horzuhammer Yeah, sorry for the misinformation. I was playing the Famicom version at the time and thought it was giving me infinite continues. But my fifth continue was used up at the snake pit. Had no idea the European version was different.
It's definetely much closer to the original U.S.-version than the japanese relase. A lot of the bugs are fixed but I think the level design is the same in both the western versions. I don't know whether there's a difference or is it just me, but I seem to remember clearing the Turbo Tunnel easiel in the PAL-version. (It could also be due that being the only version of BT I own as the real thing. (X360 pad vs. The original NES-controller.)) In the Famicom version all the levels are waay easier, at least after the first two..
On an emulator sure. Don't own a Megadrive anymore.. Very nice upgrade to 16 bit. Especially the music kicks ass on MD sound chip, but overall I still prefer the original. I don't think I've played other than the few first stages. Think I'll give it a try sometime soon.
Very nice review! I won't say co-op is impossible though, just stage 11. Zitz can join back in at the dialogue segment before stage 12 and finish the game with Rash. I actually did a co-op speedrun at AGDQ 2015 with the guy at 2:26, you should check it out sometime. Yes we died a few times. =P
+Balrog OK another week, another episode to watch and OH SHOOT!...your battle toads episode...OH BOY HERE WE GO! After video: Nice video, and I think you discribed the levels really well, and I was going to ask on who voiced the game employey caller from the beginning, and the fact that you gave scores for both with and WITHOUT cheats is interesting....and I forgot that part when you asked a bunch of people to play battletoads with you....love it!...with the exception of the "BEEP you" line. Plus your post credit scene was interesting, I NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE TILL NOW!....So it was interesting to see. Well that's all for this week, and I'll see you here next week for your pac man review which is the review that actually mentions Wario at long last. See ya!
I think a remake of this would be awesome. Something that fixes all the problems with this game and offers fair and fun difficulty ala DKC Tropical Freeze.
Its rather strange that people give battle toads so much credit when it clearly suffers from bad level design and bad programming no matter how well made and polished it was otherwise, I suppose it was the retro last of us in that respect albeit for different reasons.
I loved this game, never could beat it though. I had the turbo tunnel down pat, but after that it was all down hill for me. The warp points were extremely handy.
not gonna lie, i laughed for at least 10 minutes at the "Froakie, do you want to play with me" keep it up man, love your videos, too bad i discovered you AFTER SGC :
You are doing gods work my man. I would rather swerve into oncoming traffic than try to beat this game.

Nice review, can't wait to see the pacman one. On a different subject. Wait you beated F-Zero GX? Review please! My urge for F-Zero needs something until the first screenshots of Fast Racing Neo in september....
I almost beat the Genesis version when I was a kid. The trick was to keep hitting the crows in level 2 so that they pump out extra lives. That's how I was able to last so long. You should try that technique Balrog.
I love Battletoads. The fun I have with the game as a whole outweighs how much I dislike the surfboard level, or Volkmire's Inferno. It's gotten to the point that I'm good enough at the game where I saw you say it was the hardest game you'd ever played and I had to remind myself that it's a hard game. Maybe you should play IWBTG again, though, refresh your memory on that. Or don't, because sanity. Great review, pretty much mirrors my thoughts on the individual levels (except Turbo Tunnel, even the first time I played it I didn't think it was hard at all).
5:39 Um, 3 continues isn't 9 lives. First of ya get 4 lives pre continue, not 3. Having zero hearts counts as a life. Secondly, it's 4 lives times 3 continues, PLUS the 4 lives you start out with. So that's 16 lives in total.
Im pretty amazed I was able to reach level 11 Clinger Winger as a 10 year old with only 3 continues, I might have even beaten it if I knew what to do, unfortunately by the time I got that far I was always down to my last couple of lives so never got the chance to figure it out.
The sad thing is, I have the original VHS tape still of that Battletoads pilot. I used to enjoy watching it as a kid, but now if I look back to it online, oh god is it horrible. As for the game, I agree that it's an amazing game, but just too hard. Only way to sanely beat it without being a Battletoads god is cheating, and the game has no cheat codes included with in it, so hacking or emulation are the only ways to go there. Even the other games in the series were pretty tough, though not quite like this.
I loved Battletoads as a kid. I even had the cartoon on VHS which contained not only the pilot, but also the un-aired subsequent episodes. I'm gonna have to find a functional VCR so I can relive that magic.
iirc there were 3 episodes total, however I'm not finding any verification on the internet. Maybe I'm just misremembering; it's been so long. I definitely have that tape somewhere though.
***** Ah, lol. I thought also you might've used the warp zones like Arino from Game Center CX but must've been them save states. Understandable, given it's friggin Battletoads. *shiver*
To me Level 9 Terra Tubes was always the hardest. I only ever beat it once. Also I never had that much trouble with Level 3 Turbo Tunnel and I always skipped the ice level and volkmire's inferno.
I agree. Level 3 isn't that hard, one of the easier stages in the game. I also didn't have much trouble with the Clinger Winger. The game is all about memorization. Especially a level like Volkmire's Inferno.
Level 8 - 12 is where Battletoads finally gets brutal. Level 9 was my most hated level because of the spikes and the rubber duckies. Level 8 isn't too bad until the 2nd checkpoint and the boss is the hardest boss in the game. Level 10 wasn't too bad although the last section was hard, it wasn't too difficult compared to Terra Tubes. Level 11 wasn't too bad either but it was one of the more tougher levels in the game. Level 12 is the longest level in the game and it barely had any checkpoints. Just hope and pray that you were not on your last continue because if that happens, you'll have to do the whole game all over again which is fucking bullshit.
I would have played the gam with you. :'(
NEXT TIME
No, I would have played it with him!
If I was cool enough.
Like you...
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Apparently no one noticed the "Very Easy" difficulty rating.
GOOD NEWS - Battletoads is in Rare Replay with a rewind feature! It lets you go back a few seconds at any time in your playthrough.
ALSO, there's an infinite turbo tunnel... If that's your thing.
WUT...High scores would be like 27
I think infinite turbo tunnel is no one’s thing.
Nononononononononono caddy is the best IMO
Nathan Benson
Caddy's great but the information Balrog includes can't be touched in my opinion. I love them all though.
vDom My list of Hidden Block Reviewers:

What's the canon with Wario? Is Froakie the new Wario now?
I'm not even sure anymore, LOL
Ok im i the only one who saw that joke? 15:54 bottom left...
I believe that until Balrog reviews Megaman V, yeah, I guess you can say froakie is the new wario...
I think they are brothers
8:52 NO! Level 8 and 9 are tougher than the Turbo Tunnel. They are rightfully as late in the game as they are.
smawzyv He didn’t really play the game normally so it makes sense that his opinion on it would be so warped. Anyone who’s played it legitimately knows how hard those levels are
My voice layered over itself that many times is just... symphonic.
Great video man! As an employee of GameStop I kinda' hate this game already, but now I can really hate it on a... tangentially personal level. Hurray~
I couldn't help but laugh when Wallid said snakes wasn't too hard, I hope SuperJeenius never watches this XD

that was probably the definitive review of Battletoads, good job :) (also, I beat the game with no cheats and I still love the game even though it's kinda broken)
I love your dedication for these reviews!
16:02 Difficulity: Very easy.
o_o
5:58 hahaha Awesome! Much love bro keep up great work
16:07 it's a trap! If a reviewer teases their next game with "how bad could it be?" all hope is lost! *Grab the children and get to the bunker!*
Thanks for showing us all the awesomeness that is Battletoads. I never will attempt to play it though, too bad in this day and age they can't just "patch" a digital version so everyone could enjoy it the way it "should" be.
Pretty sure SuperJeenius would go ballistic if he heard you say level 6 was easy...
Well, I said easier compared to other levels LOL. It took me a good 3 hours to get past it.
hey Balrog, where did you get that chansey to your right???
A fan made it for me! :D
I have a few questions about the turbo tunnel. 1) If you hold down/up, do you fall off the platform and die, or just stay in one place? 2) Can I beat it if I have a reaction time of under 0.150?
(Emperor Palpatine Voice) Glad to see you've improved since we last saw each other...
Balrog you were one of the first channels I started watching you and BrutalMoose are my favorite and your reviews are some of the best on Nintendo and retro games keep making great content like this

6:12 WAS THAT CADDICARUS!
Was that a cs188 reference at 2:47?!
Believe it or not, they only limited the game to three continues for the NA version due to the rental market.
+The Side Quest Gamer The Famicom version has five continues, not unlimited. It, and the euro-version were relased some time later so they're much more polished than the US-version. Also the difficulty is toned down a bit, not just by adding continues, but with the level design as well.

The ending theme for this video was awesome. What is it?
I think a remake of this would be awesome. Something that fixes all the problems with this game and offers fair and fun difficulty ala DKC Tropical Freeze.
when he pulled up that pacman game i literally said "oh noooooooooooooooooooo" out loud at my computer
9:34 insert fanfic story about Balrog and froakie.
I love how Wallid still has his Hoenn Tears. What a brave man.
Jokes on you! I beat the game with no cheats on original hardware!
Hi! Who composed the intro theme? It's awesome!
15:52 Difficulty: Very easy.
I just KNEW you were gonna put that rating!! XD
I'm glad super hard games were made just so entertaining reviews like this could exist.
The thrill of a challenging game is great!! You fill like a BOSS once you conquer it!!
RFC + Zurachi OTP
6:04 Zurachi what were you doing?!?!? XD
You look like younger version of Jared from Subway 🤔
Its rather strange that people give battle toads so much credit when it clearly suffers from bad level design and bad programming no matter how well made and polished it was otherwise, I suppose it was the retro last of us in that respect albeit for different reasons.
the most realest thing ever said on a youtube comment
I loved this game, never could beat it though. I had the turbo tunnel down pat, but after that it was all down hill for me. The warp points were extremely handy.
6:07 What's josh doing in the bottom right hand corner? 0.o
not gonna lie, i laughed for at least 10 minutes at the "Froakie, do you want to play with me" keep it up man, love your videos, too bad i discovered you AFTER SGC :
How did you record the screen to you FC Twin?
You are doing gods work my man. I would rather swerve into oncoming traffic than try to beat this game.

WALLIDTOADS

ive been waiting since you showed it on twitter, its about time
3:10 "And a princess angelica"
So there are more princess angelicas?
Balrog is my most favorite reviewer!
Blarg is may mostest favritest vidioh game rebeiwre
why does it say 16:03 difficulty Very easy???????????????????
Where did u get battle toads
Even with infinite continues, I applaud you for beating this. I've never even seen past the third level before seeing this video.
Was that the Retsutalk end sound?
In level 8, there's a glitch where you can get stuck in limbo because once you kill the boss he flies off the screen and you're just stuck there.
3:50 I know a game in which an echidna's fist grows 3 times it's size.
R.I.P Wario, now we only have Froakie.
Oh wait you can review Megaman V and bring him back to life.
SOON.
Yay.
What game is this?
9:34 Looks like Walid is having a good time with frokie
And Caddy made everything awkward again, this time he beat a record with just two words.
I love Battletoads. The fun I have with the game as a whole outweighs how much I dislike the surfboard level, or Volkmire's Inferno. What is that meme at 15:34?
Balrog, have you ever watched the 4-Player Battletoad Race and do you think those guys were nwebs?
I wish this uploaded like 10 minutes earlier.
Oh well, at least I have something to look forward to after work, other than not being miserable.
5:39 Um, 3 continues isn't 9 lives. First of ya get 4 lives pre continue, not 3. Having zero hearts counts as a life. Secondly, it's 4 lives times 3 continues, PLUS the 4 lives you start out with. So that's 16 lives in total.
Oh,dear Battletoads...[gets flashbacks of the tv pilot]
Hey wallid, do you think you'll ever review pokemans x and y?
Was that caddy in your vid !?

WAIT THERE ARE MORE???
iirc there were 3 episodes total, however I'm not finding any verification on the internet. Maybe I'm just misremembering; it's been so long. I definitely have that tape somewhere though.
What was the cheat code used? Down + A + B + Start?
I emulated it, lol. The cartridge I had froze after Level 3 so I really had no choice.
***** Ah, lol. I thought also you might've used the warp zones like Arino from Game Center CX but must've been them save states. Understandable, given it's friggin Battletoads. *shiver*
TheMexicanLynx I wish I could, but I wanted to review all 12 levels LOL. I only used the infinite continues cheat so save states weren't used!
*****
You hardcore cheater. Nah, honestly, that's how the game should've been shipped. Like Ghosts n' Goblins, infinite continues.
***** Also Battletoads is a ripoff of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Ahh, look at all of those people giving eyes of distain to you in the Hotel Room. I remember when that didn't happen :P
I miss your old intro. Like, your most recent one is good, but this one feels really nostalgic.
Josh and Zurachi, my OTP.
They had some good ideas but nobody ever got to even see them!!! This is the only review I've seen that goes over the entire game.
what was that gag with battletoads prank calling?
***** We don't have gamestop here
To me Level 9 Terra Tubes was always the hardest.
A new video?! Is this madness?
i wonder if there any caverns in the south east of england
I think there is
k might look it up
02:30 No wonder, when Tails Doll is present... xD
16:04 Why does it say very easy???
I'm a masochist gamer(i got some people calling me insane as well) and i can't pass trough the third stage
Correction, Rareware...today it's called Rare.
have you heard of Tales of Symphonia?
I've made it to the surfing level, using save states.
I like that he puts "Very Easy" as the difficulty.
Tell me you love me, Lord Wallid.
Holy shit Balrog did you just censor a swear with an 8 bit sound
+BalrogTheMaster Difficulty - VERY EASY? Really? WHY DO YOU TEASE US WITH YOUR HELLISH JOKES!
