Snorkeling for Agates | Underwater River Rockhounding

- For the first time, I am snorkeling in a river for Lake Superior agates! Finding these underwater gemstones was an insane amount of fun but it did come with its challenges. The sediment in the river made it difficult to spot these agates and caused me to take lots of time to look thoroughly through all the rocks.
I will be doing this again and hopefully again before it gets too cold up here in Minnesota. I believe this method of agate hunting is going to produce some serious finds!

Thanks for watching! Snorkeling for agates has its challenges but I believe it’s going to pull some serious finds! I also learned filming underwater with a super old GoPro is fun 🤣 I am trying to figure that out to bring you a clearer and more enjoyable experience!
Oh yeah, snorkeling and I said diving. Oops.
Can't wait to see what you find! Bet you didn't even get bit by a mosquito 🦟 while snorkeling 🙂
I didn't! It was amazing haha
So cool I have to try this. I want to see you scuba dive a little deeper in the lake.
That sounds sooooo cold hahha
Loved the snorkeling! I wanted to reach out and wipe away the algae so you could find a big giant agate.
It will happen someday!
Algae doesn't really stick to agates. I suppose it's not impossible, but a lot of the algae covered areas are good for hounding microcrystaline minerals because they stand out against the algae like a green hat with an orange bill. Lol
I would've been rabid after the porphyryl! Especially with the orange in it. I enjoyed this snorkeling adventure immensely. Thank you!
I’ve been dreaming about it 🤣
A pry bar, my kingdom for a pry bar!
Really kool 😎 that squeal when that thing was on your finger tho 🤣🤣🤣😂😭😅 hilarious 😅... thanks for sharing ❣️....
I’m not into the creepy crawlies 😂
@@AgateDad hey me neither 😅...
Very beautiful rocks. Love them. Awesome video. Liked. Thanks for sharing. One of your best videos. From Jordan
Thanks Jordan!
I've been pitching this idea for a couple years now to several different channels. I'm glad you finally did it!
🙌
Bro outsmarted the mosquitoes
Bingo
Refreshingly cool...crawdads 😊...agates, chert, jasper...beautiful. mosquitos like warm blood. So, stay cool!
Exactly!
The water will be warmish for about three weeks starting mid August.
Thank you for taking us on a rockhounding dive. I’d like to see more of you diving.
More to come!
This is gonna be fun! Can't wait to see😂❤
Great video! Some nice finds! Don't knock the crawfish. They are very tasty boiled with corn, potatoes and sausage! VERY YUMMY!🩵🩵
Mhmmm
It's good that those agates stood out against the muck, like they were waiting to be found. Love the crawdads!
One of the perks of a waxy mineral! If you watch closely, some of the agates actually had that green/brown algea flowing in the river
Get a wet suit, and a hood. Work a wall by fanning.working left to right, and back again advancing forward. As you Fan, the water will carry the sediment away. Good luck!!
That’s pretty much what I was doing but didn’t film it because people get so sensitive about me disrupting the microorganisms 🤣
How about going out 1 day after a good rain 🌧 storm. Maybe the storm would wash away all that sediment. And maybe you might get lucky and find more stones than usual.
Beautiful idea!
That thumbnail 🤣
🙌
It appears that you had a great time. Beautiful Rocks. Man, We're unable to trek into/unto areas as such.
Absolutely I did
Cool video, great finds. Yes I would love to see more of these videos. ❤️❤️😃
Yeah I think I'd have kept being scared of crayfish to myself there guy.
That’s why I wear gloves, not gonna get pinched 😅
Catch some crawfish and have some dinner! ❤ great finds today!!
I wonder if they’d eat well!
Good morning everyone! I just wanted to say thank you, Taylor, for your videos. They always put a smile on my face.
That makes me happy ❤ thanks so much for your kindness!
What fun, to be able to travel to locations and search for these beautiful rocks and create beautiful gems and memories .
Bring on the booty! Yargh!
This is unique and fun to watch. "When you can't use the view tube, BE the view tube," is what I always say! 😉
Bingo!!
Liked the video pretty rocks to bad you couldn't get the big one😊
That was fun. 👍👍
Haha your laugh is contagious (even under water)❤
That looks so fun❤ I would love to see more!
I loved that view point myself and the older cam I was ok with. I believe snorkeling is going to take your love for agates to the next level and I can't wait to see what's coming next!
I hope so!
Gostei do vídeo! Pena que foi curto.💚
Honestly, I cracked up when you said snorkeling for agates. As I watched, I realized it was not funny at all. It looks like a serious way to find treasures in the water. Maybe a wet suit will be warmer. Thank you so much for taking us with you on this diving expedition. It was fun and productive! A real good time!
It’s harder than it looks lol
That crawfish part is so relatable lol
It’s so funny 😅
Man i used to love snorkeling/diving. Very pretty finds. TFS ❤️🏏🎸
☺️
I couldn't tell if you were doing it already, but starting at the bottom of the pool and working your way up against the current will provide the best clarity. The current will wash sediment away from where you are looking rather than over the search area.
I was doing that :)
Dziękuję💚To było ciekawe. Bardzo ładne kamyki. Pozdrawiam z Polski😊
Brrrrr! You look so cold! You found some really gorgeous agates and jaspers though! 😊
I’ll be wearing a wetsuit next time lol
❤😮
You need a brush or broom and work you way upstream. A wet suit might help.
Wetsuit will help!
Crawdads are good eating.
Thanks for the video. It is cool watching you going to the river where most people are not willing to go. An old friend of mine would allways go a little futher or a little deaper relic hunting to be rewarded. The rivers near me are just like where you are, here on the east coast of Va. We dig for fossils , whale bones and shark teeth . Love those agates! Visually satisfying!
Do you cut everything open?
( my first time watching you.)
Taylor, I want to thank you for the great videos.....I will leave the snorkeling to you. I can't swim & I am not afraid of crayfish BUT I don't get into water that isn't the temperature of a nice bath & I don't get into water that is deeper than my ankles.....LOLI was once asked if there was anything I am afraid of (because I can handle garter snaked & spiders & toads, etc.) and I told them "only two things .... outliving my kids & being seen in a swim suit" ..... stay warm & stay safe....
That was cool. Hope you warmed up a bit. You should grab a few of those crawfish and have a boil. Yum! I knew it and now I have proof... there is an Sgate Shark in those waters. Keep having fun! From Lebanon KY today.
Thanks for the video. I've been watching a ton of your videos lately & love the education I'm getting while seeing the beauties you find! This past weekend I was able to get to some of my favorite North Shore beaches & it was cool to have a better idea of what to look for! My agates are still pretty small, but I found some of the biggest I've ever found! Plus, I was doing it all wrong - going to popular places, middle of summer, arriving long past sunrise. That's OK though - I still love the hunt! 😊
Whaaat?!? I’ve always thought about this technique!! So kewl 😁😁
A wet suit might help keep you warm and especially if you go in the months before the algae makes a lot of silt.
great video!! thank you for sharing!! have a good day and week! enjoy watching the video!!
i give you a shout out a few days ago on my community tab.!! like your videos and channel.!!
Taylor this looks super fun 🤩! The video was great, and some cool finds. I wish our lakes and streams here
were clear like that. We have that reddish brown algae, snails , and water slugs , so vision is not good. It’s hotter than he// here right now , perfect for slime. Can’t wait for the next trip !!
I love your handsome mustache!!! Your wife probably would too after getting used to it!
I noticed that the algae doesn't look to be sticking/clinging on. Is that because they have wax feeling?
Bingo!!
@AgateDad I'm still learning here and there. I haven't gone agate hunting in yrs. Funny everything just about I did as a kid is pretty popular again. Trying to get out while I can in my few yrs I have left. Miigwech for the great videos and always carry bug spray 😆. I'm lucky I guess, those microraptors don't like me.
very pretty
Awesome finds I really like the bluish grey & white striped one you found earlier in the video❣️☺️
Could you walk a section with a broom to clear the sediment (and hopefully send it downstream) and then go back and snorkel the section?
Looks like fun 😊
Old lady here raised in the boonies, couldn't help but laugh that your not friends with the crawdad and the little critter on that one rock😂
I think it's a great idea to snorkel for agates. I did it as a kid on the beach's of the U.P. never thought about going down any rivers.
🦂
Can we go rock hounding together? I would love this experience
Watch out. Those crawfish look hacked off. They don't like to share their territory. hehe
what the hell... i dreamt of a large sparkling agate in the middle of a river last night. what a coincidence haha and that was after i watched inception 🤔
Wear a wetsuit and only your hands, feet, and face will be cold.
Omg youre the best. These videos are so interesting. Love your store too.
8:34 heck yeah! I would love to see more. 👑🌍♥️
So much fun Taylor! That water is so cold though and if it hurts, don't do it! It's not one of those hot days where it feels good;the view tube works just as well and it doesn't hurt you! Thanks Taylor!
Gr8 vid xx would love to see them all cleaned up xx
That was such a fun video! Thank you for taking us on your adventure!
I’m glad you enjoyed! The underwater footage will be better next time!
@@AgateDad I thought it was fantastic. I have an insane fear of being under water with my eyes open but I'm ok with video so it's fun to see.
What you won’t do for some agaty goodness
If you are going to alot of snorking get a wet suit.
Looks like fun. I really enjoyed the video. I’m hooked on your channel!❤
I’m glad! Thanks for watching!!
Yes more snorkeling 🤿 very cool
That little "ahh" at 2:48 got me. Hahaha!
Nice ❤❤❤❤❤
Dude! That was one of the most amazing pieces of porphyry I've ever seen! Why did you give up?
Too big lol
@@AgateDad Please provide GPS coordinates. Ima go pick it up...
Good idea!
Sounds like you may need a wet suit so you won't freeze.
Absolutely!
Are you by chance going to moose lake agate days?
I’m not going this year
Brrrrrr…..
Its crayfish, not a venomous viper. Get the rocks!
Wet suit and fun noodle?
Didn’t say I was frightened for my life 😂
Do you really say 'long A-get'? I have never heard that before...interesting.
AD can correct me, but I think it might be a regional pronunciation of the "a" but stands out more because it's at the beginning of the word. I could be wrong, but that's what I've picked up on. I think it's endearing.
Of course I really say it 😂
Yeah it’s my accent 😂
We Minnesotans tend to have an accent with words like that. The word "bag" comes out like "bayg" or "bage."
Gostei muito! O vídeo poderia ser mais longo. 💚
It was made as long as it possibly could be
Sim com certeza .Obrigada
So can you tell me why everything is covered with sediment and algae except for the agates you find?
Agates aren’t as porous as the other rocks and are waxy, making it harder for algea to stick to them in a running river. Watch closely and you can actually see algae attached to some of them.
Here in Northern California, we call those little buggers "crawDADS". Maybe if you think of them as fellow "dads", they won't seem to creepy? You are all just dads enjoying the creek. 🦞
My favorite part of the video was you and the Crawfish! Hahaha !
