- This is the part 2 of the Commercial Hydroponics on Bonaire project at Krusada.
The owners of Green Bonaire are Jaap and Pieter. Jaap has a background in Agriculture and he is the one in charge of the whole operation.
Jaap contacted me many months ago for consulting and I have assisted them with this one tunnel greenhouse.
They have several tunnels and this one is setup as 100% hydroponics using the methods that I have been using at my own greenhouse at URD Solution.
The greenhouse is now fully operational and has a full cycle that produces over 150 heads of lettuce a day, excluding Saturday and Sunday.
It is a non-circulating hydroponics system and it is working very well.
looking good brother .. good to see you out in the garden again ..
+GreenEvolutions ;)
@@RoaldBoom I have a few questions, I would like to email you the same. Kindly share your contacts.
What a beautiful setup! Conserving water is very important everywhere, but nowhere as much as in Bonaire!
That's beautiful...
What is your climate zone these systems are in? Can you share the average daily temps during your growing season and if you are growing year round or just seasonal? Curious how you keep the water temperature from warming too much in the recirculating system.
very nice, i grew romaine as a hobby and its great. however its doesn't like the hot weather in the caribbean so i had to find other ways to keep them cool
Missing your soul videos Roald. Hopefully all is well over there.
+Heli Pilot new ones coming soon :)
You explain pretty good!!!....
6:05 pulls the lettuce out to show and puts in back in. .. try doing that in soil farming! :)
What is the retention time of the water in your DWC
In hydro most of the water goes out through the plants.
Hello Roald, what about using gans in tube for example and help people testing this amazing technology. You have ability for this and maybe,,, this is it.
Hello, thaks for the info, your Work is Great ... can you tell me which is the distante between the holes of the planta?
+Pepe Deplata +/- 15cm
Thank you sharing the video Roald. I'm from the southern part of India and have been trying various systems of hydroponics at home scale. I have a tough time transplanting the seedlings from cocopeat nursery into netcups. It takes too much time to wash the roots and transplant them. I suspect im doing it wrong. Could you please share a video of how you transplant?
If I am not mistaken the growing media goes in the cup rather than washed!
I've been starting lettuce seeds in 2" net cups filled with coco coir. When the plants are about 2" in diameter I put them in a nursery system.
However, I find that the coco coir does wash out of the cups in the circulating system and eventually clogs the circulating pumps.
I'm now shifting to using 1" rock wool. I'll start the seeds in the rock wool. After a couple of weeks, I'll put them in the hydro system.
I'm using 1-3/4" holes for the 2" net cups. This allows the top of the cup to stick out of the top of the foam and get air into the roots. It is somewhat similar to the Kratky method.
I'll be doing a video about this soon, so subscribe to my channel.
I have many videos about my work with hydroponics on my channel.
Hi Roald, i hope you can help me a bit with some tips....we have a humidity of 90% And its about 32C in daytime And 23C in the nighttime....do You have a tip What kind of lettuche could grow here under This conditions?
Thanks in advance...
Hi! I'm a student running a small operation growing hydroponic lettuce. I've been an avid follower and admirer of your work growing space lettuce! I was wondering if you could recommend(in PPM) an optimal nutrient solution containing the essential NO3-,NH4+,P,K,Ca,Mg,S,Fe,B,Cu,Mn,Zn and Mo. I have all the necessary macro and micro nutrients to prepare my own blend. Would love to hear from you guys. Many thanks in advance.
Sam if ever you get an answer to your question from another source please share!
Following
I'm using MaxiGro from General Hydroponics for macro and micro, then Sea 90 for trace minerals. Mycorrhizae and some aminos.
6:46 A huge reptile on the left side! :)
right side
can u give details of contol for insects and fly.
Great system for small greens etc v economic water usage. Have you looked into aquaponics. Do you use microbes? And what nutrients do you add thanks.
gracias...
Roald very nice roots, plenty of oxygen there and good water flow. Lava rock works really good for the beneficial bacteria, adding another line of defense for the roots. Hey, where's Part 1 so I can see the engineering set-up design side of things? Peace Brother
+setag54321 Hi Setag, no water flow, it is a non-circulating system. Just added part 1
Roald Boom Really!....You've got me interested especially with those white roots. Are you introducing any beneficial bacteria into the system? I'll watch part 1, thanks.
setag54321 Nope, just clean water and the nutrients!
setag54321 -
Which net pots do you transplant into? and it looks like they're going into a beaver plastics raft?
how come you don't do kale?
How deep is the water and what did you use to cover the top part? Ty
Is it dwc or kratky method?
i reckon Kratky method
Hi Roald, nice set up. I’d like to implement a similar project in my country in Africa. Almost same weather conditions. I have a few questions and would be very happy if I can be able to contact you for consulting. Thanks
Hi Dave, the system is known as "Kratky Hydroponics" and is really easy to implement.
who makes the plug trays
It doesn't look styrofoam that white board looking, mate? What are you using there?
pvc foam board (lead free
@@RoaldBoom Ahh thanks mate. Cheers.
😮💯👍
Hi My name is Fung. I have a question on the pre-treatment of the harvested plants. I am wondering is this a common situation that the leaf vegetable are getting soft and withered after a few days once i harvested various types of crops on my hydroponics system? I used to cut all the root and place them in indoor area with room temperature. The second question is what pre-treatment of the plants you recommend after harvesting. Thank you so much!
Hydrocooling is the best way to prolong the shelf life of produce ...i did it on small scale using ice in water cool it down to 40-45° f and then just soak the produce for a few minutes
What's the area of Green house
Good Showing Thank You
my concern is the amount of sunlight required for effective growth since you are shading the direct sun rays with nets.how well do you think the lettuce will grow if growing light were used.
In a hot climate or season having netting over the system is preferable to keep the plants from getting too hot.
Reduced light may help the plants grow because they are striving to collect as much light as possible.
Hey Roald, this setup seems like its is doing really well. I live in an area where the temperatures can reach upto 45 degrees celsius in the summer and 9 in the winters, but we get 8 months of excellent sunshine. Would you recommend an outdoor setup. Also please let us know how to get in touch with you for a consultation. Thanks!
How hot is bonair? I want to set up one In hong kong.
Look for heat-tolerant varieties of lettuce.
You could use a tunnel type of "greenhouse."
Open at the end during the hot season.
Put shade cloth over the outside during the hottest part of the year.
HI Roald, Thanks for the very interesting videos. Why use Hydroponics instead of Aquaponics? I'm just curious and understand if your not available to get to this question. I guess living by the sea people prefer fresh salt water fish. Just guessing.
+TheWindGinProject That too, but aquaponics is more tricky and thus needs more skills and equipment. This system is dummyproof. Just add water, nutrients, plants and go on a holiday........that type of system, like KISS (keep it simple stupid) :)
+TheWindGinProject I also have Tilapia, but in an aquaculture system
Roald Boom Thanks for the details. That makes sense. Now that you explain it, I can see how someone could add or change part of a Hydroponics to Aquaponics later on.
***** Yes indeed, but only if they are able to be there on a daily basis to monitor the conditions.
Roald Boom I get it. I like the KISS system. Including the fish may be perfect for some and I do like the idea but if I was going big I definitely would want to give myself the best chance for success right out of the box.
excellent presentation thank you...how long do you grow a romain for?
35-40 days from seed
Are the tops 4 X 8 sheets of painted plywood or form board? If it is plywood what did you coat the boards with to keep them from rotting? I have a small setup like this using Kratky method using foam board but I want to do a commercial setup. Questions...why not use grodan plugs instead of the cost of the peat plugs and hydroton? I would think it would save money per plant.
+Ryan Martin Hi Ryan, 4x8 (lead free) foam boards. We tried grodan plugs but the seeds did not take off as well. pH was irregular as well.
where do you buy the foam boards?
+Ryan Martin Look for them by searching 'pvc foam boards'
Good day sir. How do you deal with root rot in this system?
I find that roots in hydro tend to be healthy until they get old.
What size nets pots are you using?
what was cost and how many lettuce u growing
Thanks for the video! What’s the nutrients solution these guys used?
Hydrogarden's tomatoe formula
@@RoaldBoom thanks for the reply! Very much appreciate it. Is there a specific reason why the tables are not level? Just curious. Thanks again!
hoi Roald Boom, wat voor voeding geven jullie aan de sla?
i see in you video, is your deep water culture system not using electicity? no airator?
I am pretty sure they are using the Kratky method here, not pure DWC. Google it.
The Kratky method uses an air gap so that part of the root gets air while most of the root is in solution. Floating DWC needs an air stone, Kratky doesn't.
Well done system Roland , i wanted to know how much shading you use ? cuz i use 70% shading net but iceberg lettuce did not make nice heads .
Thanks and wish you everlasting success..
I use 60% and the greenhouse in the video has 50%
You may want to search for heat-tolerant varieties of lettuce.
Hi Roald. I´m at Panama, right now doing some tests with a box and the Kratky method with the MHP gardener nutrients. But I have chosen to grow them inside a room due to temperature here (between 25 nighttime - 33 daytime). I would love to do this setup outside in panama but the high temperature is the issue, I think. Any ideas?
Sun conditions seem to be very similar here as in your video. I´m concerned about the temperature required for the lettuce to grow?? how do you keep the hoophouse temperature within limits for lettuce? and do both plastic layers used have 50% sun protection or just one of them?? looking to lower production costs since inside I have to use artificial lighting.
thank you for this awesome video and all the info you share!! best regards
Hello Eduardo, for the climate in Panama you would need the same greenhouse as I have here in Bonaire. We have the same temperatures, but you have more rain- a lot more!
So, the roof has to be dynaglas corrugated polycarbonate panels -solar gray. You can buy them from Greenhouse Megastore in the USA.
Make the sides with 50% shade cloth, also from Greenhouse Megastore.
No need for artificial lighting in Panama!
YESS!!! good point. And how about the sides??? would you recommend them to be able to Roll Up?...or another type of cooling system? (I´ve been checking fan and pad sys but again....costs costs costs haha)
Send me an email, I travel often to Aruba, maybe you let me visit your project.
Thanks very much for the help.
Use a shade house instead of a greenhouse.
i was interested in seeing the working of the system. I guess to an inquisitive person you could give some insight rather than showing only the greens growing.
The system is simply known as "Kratky Hydroponics"
Is the shade mesh enough to prevent flooding the beds when it rains?
No, it sure ain't
I have hydro outdoors. If it rains they will overflow but it doesn't hurt anything. You do have to check the nutrient concentration and pH after rain.
Hi there ,
What are the advantages DWC vs NFT?
What is most suitable for tropical whether and economical to implement?
Hello, the system above is neither DWC nor NFT.
Roald Boom hi ,what is this system called ? Can you Please share your contact information?
Kratky Hydroponics, it's non-circulating hydroponics, so no (air nor water) pumps at all.
Our Facebook page is URD SOLUTION
DWC is less fragile than NFT. If the pumps in NFT go down, everything dies very quickly.
One way to reduce this risk is to set up your channels in such a way that they keep 2 cm of solution in them.
Keep spare pumps on hand and possibly have a generator for power if your grid connection goes down.
Solar panels can also be used to get power for circulation.
Hi nice video!! are you dutch??
I certainly have a Dutch passport.
no bolting problems in the dwc but the pipes bolt?
yes
it that b/c the roots are in cool water and not with the channels
not sure
I think they are bolting because the air temperature is too high. Also in dwc systems the higher water volume take longer to heat up.
This looks like the kratky hydroponic method
A plants memory conditions it survival, god help these plants when human intervention fails them as it will.
I am indonesian 😀
hi everyone ,if anyone else wants to uncover aquaponic gardening system try Debuncar Amazing Aquaponics Aid (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my co-worker got great success with it.
