BMW F10 F11 LED ambient light installation - all the missing information

- DIY for ebay LED ambient lighting upgrade kits on cars with OEM ambient lighting. All the important stuff which the shitty instructions and RUclips videos won't tell you.
Install done on pre-LCI 535, but it's exactly the same on all other F10 528 550 and diesels. 2014+ may have a 3rd wire for OEM lighting, which doesn't really change anything.

great video bro Have a quick question though. You said splice into the exsisting for power. Did you also run 1 led strip off that connection? My door switch only has 2 connections coming of it. one has no wires the other is the typical pass through with the long power for the door jam, however like the other doors it does not have plug ins for the leds at all

Nice video I’ve had my ambient lights on my f10 . Lights up but how do I change colours and brightness as I don’t have a switch . Did you program to your i drive and the Brightness on the dimmer ?

Can I ask where you got the kit, do you have a link? The interior in my F10 is Dakota Oyster and the door handle surroundings are all black on the suu I yes I’ve seen. Would you know if other colours are available bar black? Many thanks and great video👍
Just search ebay for "F10 LED ambient kit" they all look the same and probably work the same as well. I've only seen orange/blue when i bought mine, but there may be others as well. Alternatively, you can just buy indovidual LED strips in a color you want and install, will just need to wire every door similar to what I've done for the driver door.
Well done very good job. Just a question How did you hook driver's door was it the same way trough windows switch or something different?

Go to 6:15 mark for driver door. I used the OEM power supply for the stock ambient lighting. If you don't have that, you can pin out which wire on the main driver door switch gets power when lights are switched on and use that instead
Unfortunately, there is no good spot in the driver's door to connect the LED strip. There is no 12V to the window switch. Power supply must be provided from the lighting of the trunk opening button.

Once you have all the info, should take only 1-2 hrs depending on skill level. If you're struggling with just removing door cards, double that probably. Overall I'd say it's very simple

at 6:30 when you cut the long cable did you just put it in the two holes of the existing connector you showing?
No, i spliced it into the wiring. Just putting wires into the holes is not a secure connection without an actual plug, you don't want loose wiring to move around and potentially create shorts and spikes. BMW computera are very finicky with regards to power

Dims automatically through the car's factory setup, no extra steps needed

What was the polarity of the main wire (blue/brown) that was going to the driver door handle which you spliced into the original ambient light power supply?
Don't recall the color but the wire i put the tester on when it lit up in the video was positive
@@balkanvt thanks for the reply. I meant the aftermarket ambient light kit wire which you cut. It was blue and brown. Any idea which one was the positive cable?
@@ronnietan6974 pretty sure blue was positive. They're LEDs, won't burn up if you flip the wires, just won't turn on.

You can connect directly to the wiring that powers the light source for your fiber optic cables. The cables themselves have nothing to connect to, it's just light traveling through them.
Hi there maby you can help me out with driver door power supply? I mean where do i get it if i don't have original ambinet lights?
Your best option is to follow the manufacturer supplied instructions and run a wire through your door behind the kick panel and splice into the dimmer switch wiring. If you have a multimeter, you could also check if the door/window switches have any power wire where the voltage drops using the dimmer switch (i.e. not constant 12v, but power comes on when lights are turned on, and voltage goes up/down when you use the dimmer switch). I haven't checked so i don't know if such a wire exists in the driver door plug
I have buy this too but the Dashboard Strip is brighter, Why There More leds on it ?
Maybe looks brighter in video because of outside lighting, it's same as doors at night

The LEDs are WAY brighter than factory fiber optic. It's just personal preference, looks better in my opinion.
@@balkanvt how about connection is it the same , and controller can u recommend one I need to buy to make it work ? All I bought is just door cards with already ambient light strip
@@rts1880 you can get the whole kit on ebay, just search for "f10 ambient LED". They all look the same, mine came from China so shipping took a few weeks. Comes with all controllers and correct lengths, and they wire into the doors as shown in the video
İf you connect wires to you existing ambient light cable you can control it by your screen the collors i did the same but you cant use dimmer switch than
That's on LCI models only. Pre-LCI doesn't have idrive control for ambient

can`t i just purchase one of the cheap Ambient lights with Bluetooth/WiFi controller for smartphone controlling and plug it into the + & - wires from the stock ambient lightning? this must work too, right?
I want to try this in the next few days. I got 5pcs. of the 10€ footwell ambientlight from Amazon. Each one has a WiFi Controller and 4 LED stripes. I will remove the plastic cover from the LED stripes to make it fit into the door panel and combine two stripes into one long strip. So i will have a long stripe for the top of the door panel and a long stripe for the bottom storage. For the cockpit I will cut off the unused LEDs. But before that, I'll test all 4 LED stripes for the complete front panel.
With the APP Lotus Lantern i can add all of the 5 LED Controllers and use my phone or my Android Screen to switch the colors of the lights. Hope it will work :D

I have installed and after I try to control from switch dimming more then 70% they start to blink ang go off. 😢
Sounds like unclean or unstable/fluctuating voltage coming off your dimmer switch when turned down. You can test it to confirm, may be a faulty switch

I'm thinking of doing this upgrade but I have the 5 series GT which differs a little. Do you know the length of the led strip, especially the top ones and over the glove box, maybe the will fit anyways. And also, is it possible to measure the diameter if the oem optic tube that goes into the led. Was think that its possible to buy aftermarket EL-Wire led to replace the original ones.
Thanks! Yes, you can just pull off the door trim and measure your OEM tube diameter. I got one EL wire and honestly it's not very bright either - you can see it glow when exposed, but it doesn't throw much ambient light when hidden. If you're going through the install effort and paying money for EL wire, honestly I'd rather spend a bit more for LED. As for fitment, these LED strips do not physically cover the full length of the doors, both top and bottom they're a bit shorter, so I'm sure they would fit the GT as well
I bought 5m amber Ledstrip on Aliexpress and soldered some wires on it. Cost me just a little over 12 eur (120Led's/m) and have the same result. except i cant change to blue.

Which module? These kits connect independently in each door. Each door handle trim then controls the power distribution and color. There is no central module
@@balkanvt some kits have a control module that allows you to change the led colors using the iDrive controller and menus.
@@andrewmiskell1768 sweet, didn't find that one back when I was ordering mine. Assuming you need to have LCI model since pre-LCI doesn't have ambient adjustment in the idrive

Search ebay for F10 ambient LED kit...they all appear to be the same and ship from China. Might even find US kits by now for faster shipping. Mine was about $80 i think and took almost a month to arrive during covid lockdowns
