"What they did in the past with colonialism"? Good grief. smh I'm British and I've never colonised anything. Some people, those who are particularly low-resolution thinkers, seem to be unable to differentiate between the past and the present, and unable to grasp that cultural and/or ethic essentialism makes a seriously faulty connection between the individual, the group to which they belong, and how that relates (if at all) to history. That kind of groupthink is really dangerous.

Without wishing to sound overly defensive I always get frustrated when people talk about 'they' and colonialism in Britain. I consider myself English, but my paternal Grandparents were Irish and my maternal Grandparents were from the Highlands of Scotland, both places which suffered greatly at the hands of the English upper class. Up until recently many working class English people were in workhouses, and parts of the country still suffer from extreme amounts of poverty. It was in the main the English gentry, aristocracy and upper classes that benefited from 'the empire' and despite still being very wealthy and owning huge swathes of the land in Britain/England - these people are a tiny % of the population and certainly don't represent your average Brit.
Mate, all of us in the UK have benefitted from colonialism. Where do you think the money came from to fund the industrial revolution? Colonialism is what catapulted the UK into a top world power. All of our infrastructure, social infrastructure and institutions have benefitted from colonialism. Instead of shying away from it, we should just accept and acknowledge it. It doesn't mean you need to feel guilty about it but we should acknowledge the harm it has done and the advantages it has given us. Doesn't matter if you are an aristocrat, from anglo-saxon stock, working class, descended from slaves or even a recent immigrant to the UK; if you live in the UK then you are benefitting from the UK's colonial past (to differing degrees). You only have to see the decline of the UK in world standing over the past 70 years to see how we are just a minnow country (with our standing being propped up by our spread of the English language, establishing London as a financial hub during the peak of colonialism and membership in the EU).

The whole of Europe has a terrible colonial past not just Britain. For example the atrocities the Germans committed against the Herero people in Namibia is beyond anything the British ever did.
@zuppymac The British Empire banned slavery for the world, not only that, but the Royal Navy forced all other nations to stop the African slave trade, just check out on RUclips the British crusade against the African slave trade, also when Britain defeated the Indian army and began the 200 year rule of India they discovered the quaint Indian tradition of Widow burning, the British told them to stop it immediately, and they replied that it was their tradition, the British said it was their tradition to hang men who did it and confiscate their property, how many lives do you think that saved, bearing in mind the huge population of India.

Just for anyone reading this, not all Brits think like this, or believe the hype that we 'civilised' the world like Great White Saviours. Some of us realise that ancient civilisations like the Eqyptians, the Mesopotamians, the Persians, the Indians, the Chinese, were building pyramids, advancing medicine and scientific theories, developing complex political systems, and founding powerful dynasties, whilst the indigenous Britons were painting themselves blue and building huts out of mud. I'm not going to enter into a discussion about the brutality, the genocide and the oppression that the British Empire brought with them while they 'civilised' the nations they conquered, or the disgusting views those Britons had about the people they ruled over, but suffice to say, 'doing more good than harm' is a bold statement that history will not treat kindly.

I'm British and I've never colonised anything.
Maybe we should have left those countries then to continue without any civilised order ,witch doctors, and no grasp of what they could be.

@zuppymac Hmmm where do we start. Spain, wreaked havoc in the South & Central America’s as well as Mexico. Portugal, again responsible for uninvited trips to the South America’s. France, well just read your history for the countries they visited. Belgium, the nightmare they inflicted in central Africa. Germany, we all know that lot. The Scandinavian countries, well you have to go back a while for those bad boys, but we suffered from them. Anymore.
And many of the people ,crossing the English Channel in dinghies for sanctuary in the UK are from former FRENCH COLONIES, which Brits had nothing to do with.

@zuppymac This is a GLOBAL situation and if the UK MSM ( which is Remain focused for profit) were to seek the truth as they are always saying " in the public interest", then they would find that many of the people, who crossed the English Channel in dinghies are from countries in Africa and Malaysia, which were and some still are, French colonies with Macron ( or the French Govt) issuing their currencies!!

The guy who says Brits don't give a damn about the poor is partly right - the ruling class and the media certainly don't, and neither do the hardcore of traditional Conservative voters. However, most ordinary people do care, and spend a lot of time volunteering, raising money for charities and trying to help people who are worse off than themselves. Inequality has exploded here over the last 10-15 years, and it has been extremely painful to witness - I live in one of the most deprived cities in England and it has been awful to see more homeless people sleeping on the streets, and food banks unable to meet the high demand.
Our backward political system and terrible media make it look like we're an uncaring cold country, but if you actually survey people about their opinions, the majority of people are just as centre-left as the rest of Northern Europe. @@mcarlsson74 Martin thank you for those words about the UK. I would like to add that millions of us here are sad about the Brexit disaster, we didn't want this and it upsets us to know that our government has caused hurt across Europe. Personally I would love to come back into the EU but it's probably not possible in my lifetime.
All countries have ugly aspects of history and culture. You need to open your mind and free it from your Marxist education. Live outside your own country and learn more about than living there.
Swedes dont seem to know much about the uk.
Except of course they all speak fluent UK.
I resent this idea that we want to be American I love Europe we are European. I have no feelings for America on the other hand really it's total indifference towards them, I don't know why they would think that. I would guess brexit had a part to play in that I suppose.
I'm suprised that girl said the UK is a ****hole...where did she visit? Lots of not so great places but also lots of lovely parts...
The guy who said **** you for leaving the EU, he also said UK was eternal enemy of Germany. Well that's only true when Germany launched 2 world wars. Prior to that we were on good terms with Germany.
Anyway, the Brits love the Swedes, but don't underestimate the difficulty in managing a larger more diverse population. Sweden is smaller and more conforming, things are easier that way.
It's an absurdity that any foreigner thinks we even give a damn what our colonial ancestors did in the past. That's on them; if they want to drag up the past we can all do that.
